4 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 03/10/2009

2006 vw Beetle loses power when driving. This has happened at least fifteen to twenty times. Car taken to vw dealership service six times for repair. Twice while under the new car manufactures warranty. They have tried to fix the problem, but have not as it still happens. We no longer drive the car. Vw of America has been notified. Fortunately no one has been injured as we have been able to pull off on to the shoulder. Just hired a lawyer as vw's position is it's my problem.

5 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 04/04/2008

On April 4, 2008, our 2000vw GLS Beetle caught fire as it was being driven on the interstate. Car had been hesitating and the check engine light would come on, so we had it serviced at our local vw dealership on March 28. Diagnostics did not find anything wrong. We went ahead as asked for fuel filter and the coolant sensor to be replaced. For the next week, the car continued to hesitate, especially after being driven for more that 20 minutes. We made another appointment with the service department to have it repaired and as my daughter was driving to this appointment she noticed the hesitation again, and about 10 miles later, noticed smoke in the rear view mirror. She pulled off the highway and smoke started pouring inside the car. All of the dashboard lights clicked on, then off. Within 2 minutes, the car was completely engulfed in flames. My daughter was able to get out of the car and was not physically harmed. The car was a total loss.

Airbag short to ground coolant system short to ground.

7 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 09/15/2005

I own a new vw Beetle and the instrument cluster has been giving displays that come on and off concerning the abs system, air bag and engine. I had the car looked at and was told that there is corrosion of the terminal strip from the coolant tank that is causing the problem. I was further told that and given a field service technical bulletin that outlined the problem due to a design flaw. This can be a problem as the instrument panel is unreliable and the safety systems cannot be sure to be working. I contacted Volkswagen to no avail. I would like to know what recourse I have to have a design flaw corrected?.

13 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 05/01/2001

Car overheats routinely. Initially in for repair on 1/25/01 when dealer claimed to have replaced the water pump and thermostat. Since then, car has overheated on three occasions, and water leakage has been observed. Dealer says they can not replicate the issue. Driver's side door does not lock and unlock reliably, forcing me to enter and exit car through passenger door. Reported to dealer three times (initially 5/31/00). One time dealer lubricated lock; currently they say they can not replicate the issue and will not fix. After water pump repair in 1/01, car exhibited a whining noise and power steering stiffness at low rpms -- likely due to improper workmanship during that repair. Dealer claims power steering fluid was low, and has been "topped off" to alleviate problem. However, I recently had rountine maintenance at another establishment just 4 days prior to taking into shop; during that service, power steering fluids were indicated as "ok. " oil consumption is excessive. Despite repeated reports to vw (initially 5/00), have received no resoluion or investigation into this issue. Through research, I have learned that this is a common Beetle problem, and some Beetle owners are receiving new engines or valve stem repairs to remedy. Transmission jerks severly when shifting from reverse to drive. Initially reported 9/29/98 at 9596 miles and not addressed by dealer. Recurring problems with headlight sealant leakage and water getting into headlight assembly, causing headlights to be unreliable and potential electrical/fire hazard. Have researched vw and learned during initial Beetle production in puebla, mexico, they experience an abominal 40% defect rate. From research into other consumer issues with 1998 Beetles, I am certain that vw passed these defective vehicles on to consumers. Please contact me for further details. I have also experienced window reglator failures, dead battery, interior pieces falling apart and other issues. Thank you!.

15 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 12/01/1999

While in motion, the red engine coolant light illuminated. Consumer checked the coolant reservoir and found it to be empty. The cause, a leaking coolant reservoir cap. The red engine oil pressure light illuminates occasionally. The oil level was extrememly low. Mazdas service manager informed consumer that the new Beetles tends to use oil. The engine control unit failed also. The oil pan has a hole in it which allowed the oil level to continuously be low, therefore allowing the engine oil pressure light to continuously illuminate, also the timing belt and tensioner belt were replaced.

16 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 06/01/1999

Plastic clip in cooling system broke, causing all coolant to be discharged all over the engine and engine to overheat. Dealer replaced plastic clip with metal clip. Vw sent dealer 8 metal clips the week previous. They said other Beetles probably had this problem, that's why vw sent them 8 metal clips ahead of time.
