From the Volkswagen recall site steering wheel air bag & clock spring. Summary: Volkswagen group of America, inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen Cc vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag. Consequence: a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury. The local vw dealer says our car is not included however, nothing works on the steering wheel and the air bag warning light in the dash is on. When contacting vw direct I am told NHTSA is responsible for expanding the recall to include our VIN. Questions? is our car safe to drive? if we have a front end collision will the steering wheel air bag work? if NHTSA is aware of 420,000 recalls for this same issue will the recall be expanded to cover other VIN? this is an expensive fix and all logic tells me it should have been included in the original recall.

I have never had any problems. Never in an accident or had anything replaced. All maintenance up to date. Started the car with no issues. Continued to drive going 35mph normal driving conditions and multiple warning lights appeared. Abs. Power steering, emergency brake, and air bag. Took it to closest auto repair to make sure nothing dangerous was about to occur. Quick diagnostic and they said all problems are electrical. Nothing physically wrong with the car and will likely need new sensors and clockspring.
I purchased my 2010 vw Cc used in may 11, 2013 at 35,000 miles--it had two previous owners. Ever since that time, the steering wheel clock spring has been making a chafing noise whenever the steering wheel is turned. More recently, the noise has become louder, and I hope that the ribbon cable within it will not tear and cause an airbag deployment when not in an accident, or a non-deployment when in an accident. I have not bothered to take it to a vw dealer due to the car being out of the 3-year/36,000 warranty and due to excessive prices charged by dealerships. Luckily, the airbag warning light has not yet illuminated. I received a recall notice indicating that a remedy is not yet available. This is unacceptable. The notice also mentioned that hair and/or fibers are to blame--I don't see this as being possible, as hair would rarely fall that far forward of the driver's head, and the previous two owners and I are males with short-cut hair.
Issue happened after incident in August 2011 and progressively became worse. Steering wheel will lose electrical power to controls (I. E. Stereo controls) and causes airbag warning light to come on and horn will not function at all. Dealer looked into issue and found that the clockspring needed replacement. Clockspring replaced in steering wheel and airbag issue has been resolved but steering wheel control issue still remains along with not having a working horn. Vw USA had no known fix for this issue as al wiring is in working order. Dealership requested vehicle be brought back in for a further look.
