I was pulling up to a red light, clutched in, shifted to neutral and noticed my steering had locked. I restarted the car, it stumbled, and then died. Restarted again, it stumbled and then died. Restarted again, it stumbled, and then died. Restarted again, and then the light had turned so I gave it throttle to keep it from stalling and then got going. Once moving I did not have any driveability issues. It had about a 1/4 tank of 93 octane fuel and I had just driven a few miles on some city backroads. During the stall the gauge gear indicator showed 5>4 when in neutral meaning the car thought it was in 5th gear.

As I am braking to a stop with the clutch fully depressed (at a red stop light or to make a left turn), the car quietly and completely stalls out and shuts down. The dash lights remain on. I can restart the car. This seems to occur randomly but occurred 3 times yesterday afternoon. No engine check light.
Brand new purchased 2 days ago on 5/30/19 with 24 miles on it. It's a 6 speed manual transmission and when approaching a stop either in gear with clutch depressed or in neutral, car will stall and need to be restarted. Dangerous, safety is a concern. It's a very subtle stall and you really have to be paying attention or bad things will happen. Happening more often now, vehicle now has 122 miles and going back to dealer for more testing. Initial testing at dealer was able to duplicate problem 1 day after purchase. It's now 2 days old! build date was 3/2019. It appears to me to be slow speed coasting, clutch not engaged in neutral to a stop or clutch engaged in gear coasting to a stop.

My Golf tdi suffered a catastrophic failure of the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) causing my vehicle to stall in the middle of traffic. Luckily every warning light on my dash lit up about 30 seconds prior to complete failure allowing me to begin to merge from the left hand lane and coast with my hazards on to the right lane. From initial symptom to complete vehicle failure was less than 1 minute. Searching online this is a common failure, one that results in upwards of an $8000 repair.

First incident was 1/06/14. My wife was a week over her delivery date tried to start the car and it tried to turn over but wouldn't start. Eventually called dealer who had her tow it in to them. The dealer informed her of moisture in intercooler pipe which they blew out with an air hose and charged her $48 (they said it is normally about $150). They informed her it was due to driving short distances & the cold weather; that diesels needed to be driven long distance only. The 2nd incident was 1/30/14. My wife & newborn were running errands in town when the car engine malfunction light came on & she pulled over to check on it. The car then would not start & again had to be towed to dealer. This time they pulled a big chunk of ice from inter-cooler pipe and said the inter-cooler had to be replaced & cold weather kit installed (est. $1100). A quick search on-line shows this is not a new problem & vw has been aware of it on north american diesels for several years yet they have failed to inform new buyers or fix the problem. Also many owners who have gotten vw's "fix" (cold weather kit) say it has not solved the problem. If we had know their diesels could not be driven in the winter or for short distances we definitely would not have bought one. Leaving any one stranded in the winter is bad but leaving my very pregnant wife & my newborn baby is something I can't put up with. Because vw doesn't admit to having a design flaw I am going to have to foot the bill for something I have now control over but vw does. On top of that I may have the same problem within a week due to an unforeseen event called "winter" if their fix doesn't work. If knowing you have a design flaw in your vehicles that leaves owners stranded at the worst possible time (winter) does not constitute a safety issue & deserve immediate attention&accountability if not a recall then I'm not sure what does.
I drive 50 miles one way to work. Drove car to work and parked for the day (6 am), went out after work to start car and car would not turn over. Car acted as if the motor was locked, car is a manual drive so I left car in gear and rolled back ward to bump motor. Car attempted to start and when finally started it ran very rough. Read on internet regarding possible intercooler issue and took car to dealer. Dealer found a large amount of water in intercooler. Dealer unaware of TSB for this issue but was able to find in vw data base. TSB equipment was installed, car has worked fine until this even after work same symptoms only car did not require bumping of motor.
I was entering an intersection at 10mph and halfway into the intersection, my car stalled and stopped. It slowly bumped the car in my rear. No injury or damage noted. I put the car in park, turned off the car and restarted it and drop it to the nearest parking lot. This is a vw Golf tdi 2011!.
2011 vw Golf tdi 6-speed manual. My car was at the vw dealership to have an intercooler kit installed (TSB 2025464). On dealer's test drive, car abruptly stalled and would not restart. All power lost, car had to be towed off of roadway. Finally diagnosed as a malfunctioning high pressure fuel pump. 03l-130-851-ax was the replacement part number. Repair description stated that the common rail fuel pressure was too low, so the car's ecm would not allow injection - even in a limp-home mode. This left the one-year-old car with under 14,000 miles dead on the roadway.
Upon attempting to accelerate the engine would not rev above approximately 1500 rpm. I was barely able to get the car moving. After reaching about 10 mph the car stalled in the middle of the street. Fortunately, due to the time of day there was not much traffic and I was able to safely coast to the side of the street. I reported the issue to my local vw dealer and inquired if the issue was related to vw service bulletin "€œfrozen charge air cooler"€ dated 9/6/2011. During a subsequent visit for an unrelated repair the dealer technician experienced the same issues. The technician determined that the service bulletin was applicable and attempted to order the repair kit. The service advisor informed me that vw agreed that I was experiencing the symptoms related to the service bulletin, but the recommended repair has proven ineffective and they would not install the kit. I was informed that vw has, as yet, no permeant solution and that the temporary solution is to allow the "€œcharge air cooler"€ to thaw and dry out any remaining water. I have been advised that the situation is likely reoccur. If this issue happens in heavy traffic I would be likely be unable to move out of danger safely.

The vehicle was towed to a dealer who diagnosed that the inter-cooler had ice inside the hoses. The dealer repaired the inter-cooler with a new kit. However, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate mileage was 12,000. Ne.

While driving my 2010 vw Golf tdi will stall/hesitate for a second or two. I expierence this issue about once every couple weeks. I reported the issue to the dealer, but they reported that could not find any issues with the car.
Oil pan on my 2000 vw Golf is made of cast aluminum or magnesium, very brittle. By design, the car has minimal ground clearance. A hole was punched in the oil pan by contact with the roadway on passing over a small bump. Led to discharge of all engine oil onto the roadway, posing a hazard for other motorists. While visiting the vw shop for maintenance on my car, I have heard the service manager dealing with other owners who have had similar experiences. Believe NHTSA should query vw about rate of oil pan damage on cars with cast aluminum oil pans, and if statistics warrant, require vw make available sturdier oil pans, perhaps of steel. I have installed a steel skidplate on my vw (commercially available, which tells you something about what the marketplace feels about the issue of vw oil pan toughness) to prevent further damage. I am convinced it has saved my engine many times over the past 2 years in normal driving on paved roads.

This vehicle stalls out intermittently. Has been back to the dealer for repairs 6 times with no resolution. Dealer service manager admits they are grasping at straws and just replacing parts to get rid of it. Vw regional manager chris o'hara refuses to buy back the car and also refuses to allow us to bring the car back for service again, even though it is still under warranty.
