Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Gti-4. The contact stated that when he start the engine, it rattle inside. The vehicle was taken to demontrond Volkswagen dealer, (14101 north fwy, houston, TX 77090, (281) 872-3855) where it was diagnosed that the timing chain and the timing tensioner needed to be replacement. The vehicle was later taken to an independent mechanic where the repair was completed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided a case number: 190-669-582. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000. Aw.

At 68,000 miles on my 2012 vw Gti, I had to have the timing chain and tensioner replaced. However, when I tried to report my repairs for cost reimbursement per the class action lawsuit, I was informed that my VIN wasn't included in the extended warranty for these parts. I would like to have my VIN revisited as clearly, those faulty parts were included within my vehicle as they had to be replaced at 68,000 miles. The need for the repair was determined when my check engine light illuminated and I took my car to the dealership here in greenville, SC. All repairs and maintenance have been done at this dealership since the owner of the vehicle prior to me.
Ea888 has a known timing chain and chain tensioner issue that causes engine failure.

Vehicle has 140,455 miles on it and was well maintained. At approximately 15 mph heard loud sound and had total engine failure. Car was towed to a Volkswagen specialist and said that the timing chain threw due to the timing chain tensioner, a common problem for the 2. 0 tsi engines from 2008-2012. Minimum for repair would be $4,000 due to bent valves; maximum will be engine replacement (~$9,000). Given car's age and value, neither options are worth fixing and I will have to sell car for parts. After researching online, the timing chain tensioner failure is a common issue with 2. 0 tsi engines yet Volkswagen did not issue a recall related to the issue.

On the morning of November 29, 2017 I found that my 2012 Volkswagen Gti would not start. The vehicle has 73,530 miles and has been maintained by a Volkswagen dealer since I purchased it in September of 2013. I drove the vehicle and parked it in my garage the night of November 28 with no issues or indications that anything was wrong. There were no check engine lights. I had the vehicle towed to betten imports in grand rapids, mi for inspection. The technician, kevin, found that the timing chain had jumped time due to a failed tensioner which resulted in damage not only to the timing chain but also the head. The estimated cost of this repair is $3700. I called Volkswagen care and spoke with paul on the afternoon of December 4, 2017. He informed me that since I did not purchase the vehicle from an authorized Volkswagen dealer, Volkswagen would not offer to cover any of the repair expenses even though they are aware of an issue with the timing chain tensioner and have actually issued a technical service bulletin regarding the problem. At no point during my maintenance visits to the dealership did they ever inform me of the issue or possibility of part failure. The vehicle is still at the dealership waiting for a new timing chain which is expected to arrive on December 18, 2018.
Vehicle was purchased from a Volkswagen dealer with 61557 miles and maintained through service at dealership including regular oil changes. Less than two years later, at roughly 106,000 miles the timing chain tensioner failed randomly while driving resulting in valve damage and ultimately full engine failure. Vehicle was coming out of a turn at approximately 24 mph, safely in 3rd gear, and failed about 2 seconds after throttle was applied. No possible warning from vw or their service techs and no scheduled maintenance interval for this part. Had this happened in a more traffic filled area, there may have been a very high chance of a collision or other safety concern.
I tried to start my car, which was parked in the driveway; the battery was working fine, but the engine would not start. I had it towed to a vw mechanic the next morning, 11/9/17. The vw mechanic informed me that my timing tensioner chain had broke causing my pistons to crash into one another, causing my engine to not work and need a total rebuild. My car had given no warning, no engine lights, nothing to allude to an impending catastrophic issue involving my engine. My car only has 59,000 miles on it, premature for this issue - especially with no warning. This issue is not protected by warranty.
Defective timing chain tensioner went and destroyed the entire engine that has less than 50,000 miles on it. Apparently this is a known issue with vw that I found out about after the fact. Luckily it happened in my driveway.
60k miles timing chain tensioner failed at idle in my garage causing catastrophic engine damage. Vwoa declined assistance despite TSB existing for updated part. Vwoa cited reason of failure as improper maintenance. All my maintenance was done on time or early at vw dealers with the exception of 3 oil changes I performed myself with recommended oil. The rate of failure is extremely high and customers are not being informed that an updated part exists. I brought this car into the dealer twice for camshaft correlation codes which were verified and I was told it's normal operation. This cost me $3000 to repair. Also warranty extensions on other parts are not disclosed when you run your VIN on vw's website. Fraudulent concealment is being committed. If this happened while the vehicle was in motion a crash could have occurred as all power was lost.
Timing chain tensioner failure. Started the car one morning and ran extremely rough and wouldn't stay running. Dealer wants %6000 to rebuild engine or $7000 for a remanufactured engine. Car has 80k miles on it.
The timing chain tensioner slipped and blew the cams. The clutch was also bad. Every person I talked to when I had to buy a new engine knew that vw Gti or golfs had this notorious issue. We had only owned the car for 9 months and had to buy an entire new engine because of this problem that everyone in the car industry knew about already.
My car's engine makes a ticking sound when I start it and when it's in idle. I was told that it could be the timing chain tensioner, since there have been issues with that with the 2013 models. I don't want to wait until my engine is ruined. Timing chain tensioner should not be going bad or showing symptoms with only 71,500 miles yet. I can't show you pictures, since it is hard to remove the cap covering the timing chain.

My vw Gti has a failing timing chain tensioner that caused my valves to collide with pistons and required a rebuild of the engine (excluding timing chain). The engine is not timed correctly and has lost a ton of power and is rattling, if I continue to drive it will most likely cause the engine to seize again. The vehicle was stationary and initially broke upon turning it on.
I was driving in traffic when the engine started to run rough and loud. I had to pull over and turn it off. When trying to turn it back on it started up and continued to run rough. I had the vehicle towed to the shop. When they looked at it they told me the engine needed to be replaced due to the timing chain tensioner failing. When I asked about when I was supposed to have this service done they told me its not listed in the owners manuel or at any service interval up to this point. The part is not on any list of service for the car yet failed at 93k miles. Vw should issue a recall for this problem because they didn't report it to me as something that could break. I was told when I bought the car that the timing chain and tensioner should last the life of the vehicle which should be much higher then 93k. This is a common issue in all vw tsi engines and can happen as early as 40k, vw needs to fix this and warn existing customers.
The timing belt tensioner is faulty.
For several weeks, I noticed occasional misfires upon startup and acceleration. Then, the vehicle began running loudly and consuming a lot of oil. The vehicle also shuddered while driving. One morning, the car shuddered and bucked while I attempted to start it, and ultimately failed to start after several attempts. The engine light illuminated. This is not a battery issue; the battery is only a few months old and was tested in the past few weeks (holds charge at 100%). I have had the car towed to two mechanics and the problem was diagnosed as a timing chain tensioner failure leading to catastrophic engine failure. According to the first mechanic, the entire engine needs to be replaced for approximately $4500. According to the second mechanic, the timing chain tensioner needs replacing and the top half of the engine needs to be repaired, leading to a quote of $2800 for repair. The mechanic stated to me that he has already performed approximately 8 of these repairs on Volkswagens in the last year and directed me to investigate a pending new jersey lawsuit against Volkswagen for the same issue. This appears to be a common complaint. If my engine had failed while at speed on a roadway it would have been extremely dangerous.
Premature engine failure while driving due to a known defective timing chain tensioner which vw has sent a TSB about but refuses to do a recall to replace. Instead they expect customers to pay $1500 to have the newly updated tensioner installed. Engines are failing both under and just out of warranty. Sudden loss of power and control of the engine while driving causing the ability to steer and maneuver the vehicle to a safe stop in traffic.
Vehicle was stationary and parked. It would not start. The engine tried to turn over but would not stay running. It was taken to a Volkswagen dealer service department for diagnosis. The result is a timing chain tensioner failure and very large $2200 repair fee with the potential for a significant rebuild of the engine if more damage is found. After some research it appears that this is a known design issue with the tensioner part and there is a technical service bulletin (TSB 1512-01) issued for it but no recall. It is very like to occur for all Volkswagen models with the 2. 0 tsi engine produced between 2008-2013. This could have been life threatening if the failure had occurred while the vehicle was in motion, especially at higher speeds.
Timing chain tensioner failure - the car was parked for the night. In the morning I went to start it. I would not start. There were no lights or error codes. Towed to the dealership. The dealership stated zero compression and bent valves. They stated I need a new engine. 7400. 00 called vw of american. They offered no help what so ever. Volkswagen of America just keeps stating the car was out of warranty. There is a TSB, multiple complaints on the internet regarding tiguans, Gti's and passats. This engine has had this problem happening for years from 2008 to 2013 vw will not accept any responsibility.
The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Gti. While parked, it took multiple attempts to start the vehicle and the check engine warning light illuminated. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the timing chain tensioner failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 111,900.
Walking out to my vehicle in sub-freezing weather to return home, I attempted to start the vehicle and when the engine caught it made a loud rattle and died quickly. This same situation occurred on subsequent ignition cycles all with the same result. Vw has released a service bulletin pertaining to this common issue which is to check the timing chain tensioner. When this tensioner fails it can render the engine useless. I have removed the timing chain cover and the tensioner has failed and does not hold tension to the chain. Vw should take responsibility to fix this issue in customer vehicles as it is a known defective part that they are unwilling to repair or aid in repairing.
Vehicle was running very rough. Hard to start. Had it towed to north penn vw. They diagnosed it as a defective timing chain tensioner. Two managers and a tech said the part failed and it should not have. They said it was of no fault of my own. They suggested I contact vw since it was a defective part. I did and they said they would not be able to help me since it out of warranty. It is a known problem on all 2010 vw's. The dealership admitted it and there is a service bulletin(TSB) addressing the exact part.
The contact owns a 2007 Volkswagen Gti. When a passenger is seated in the front passenger seat, the air bag sensor light constantly illuminates and displays "passenger side air bag is off". The dealer stated that the wiring harness needed to be replaced. The replacement was made, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the seat tensioner was replaced. The failure persisted as well. While driving less than 60 mph, the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. The weather stripping on the passenger side was replaced three times, in addition to the sunroof once. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer for repairs. The failure mileage was 10,000 and current mileage was 41,000.
