During the snow storm the clutch and the four wheel drive did not engage. I was driving slowly along with the traffic and the as the car started to acsend an incline in the road, it started to skid; and when I engaged the brakes, attempted to change gears, the clutch would not engage. When the car came to a stop, there was a odor of burning rubber. I contacted vw America about the failure, they covered the cost of the part and not the service as a customer appreciation good will gesture.
Transmission spontaneously disengages while vehicle is moving. Problem sometimes fixes itself immediately, sometimes the vehicle needs to be restarted in order for the problem to be cleared. The dealership is aware of the problem, but is unwilling to fix it sitting that they cannot reproduce the circumstances surrounding the problems. The dealership will only examine the problem 24 hours before I incur charges for the loaner vehicle. So far no parts have been replaced, and no work has been done beyond attempts to reproduce the problem. This problem caused a near accident at highway speeds when it occurred while the engine cruise control was engaged. After disengaging power, the engine revved to red line, the transmission then re-engaged. This problem occurs frequently, up to 3 times per week.
While driving at approximately 65 mph on I-95, car disengaged from transmission. Engine revved, but slowed down. At approximately 45 mph, transmission re-engaged. At same time, center display flickered and began indicating all drive modes. On July 10, 2009, while stopped at an intersection, the same thing happened. When I pressed the accelerator, the engine revved, but transmission didn't engage, and wouldn't engage, until I restarted the car. As the intersection was on a slight downgrade, this left me in the middle of the intersection, until I was able to restart the vehicle.
