My key got stuck in my ignition on thanksgiving, I could not go to my 2nd job on black Friday because of this issue and had to quit my job. I went to vw puente hills in CA and they made me pay for a new cylinder that cost almost $900. They told me it was a cylinder issue. A week later my key got stuck again, I went back to the dealership and they told me it was a key issue and I had to pay for the key, they said they were going order a new cylinder and have it replaced. It's been almost 2 months and they could not find the real issue. They called me again today saying that it is not the cylinder issue, it is the module, now they want me to pay for a new key and a new module! the said the module would cost around $400. And mind you, I have to pay for the key! I also just paid for a new cylinder! I am being ripped off and taking advantage of. I would like a refund for this and for puente hills Volkswagen reported for taking advantage of their customers.

Ignition key will not turn engine off, cannot remove without 10 minutes of jiggling. Second occurrence, second repair. My vehicle has 49,800 miles. Ignition module and associated parts were replaced in 2015 due to failure and now in September 2018 due to failure. Key also broke due to repeated attempts to remove.

2010 vw Jetta wolfsburg shut down while in operation on a highway while unable to get safely out of the way of traffic. Engine shut of and I was unable to restart the engine with the key. With the car in neutral and in park the engine would not turn over. I eventually removed the key and reinstalled it. At this point the engine turned over and started. Took the car to the vw dealer and it was determined that the ignition control module in the steering column was defective. However it was not a constant failure and the car could stop running at any time. Other defect was the wiper motor stopped operating at approximately 1800 miles. This was also replaced by the dealership.

2007 vw Jetta wolfsburg: pulled out of vw dealership into an intersection and the engine shut off with no warning. Turned ignition off and back on and the car restarted. Got onto the interstate and the car lost power going about 65 mph. Gas pedal to floor and no acceleration. Removed foot from pedal and pushed again and car started to accelerate again. Exited off interstate and slowed down at intersection to stop at traffic light. Engine died and would not restart. Car was towed by vw to their service dept. The police were contacted to direct traffic due to the unsafe conditions created by the car stopping in an intersection. These problems occurred during rush hour traffic and we were fortunate not to have been killed or to have caused an accident. The problems occurred on an extremely hot day. The car was at the vw service dept for 12 days and over 600 miles were put on my car by vw. The dealership contacted vw of America to help diagnose the problem. The service dept mgr acknowledged low voltage on the meters he connected to my car and also the ignition would not start for him while he had the car at a gas station. Since they could not exactly re-create the problems that occurred, I did not feel they could assure me the car had been repaired and would be safe to drive. They were "guessing" at the repair. The ignition control module was replaced and I was assured by vw service dept and vw of America that the car was repaired and safe to drive. After driving appx 300 miles, the car stalled again. I have seen similar problems reported on the NHTSA website under various categories for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Jettas. This is a serious problem with the vw Jetta and vw of America needs to respond to these complaints. This car should not be allowed on the road. I was told by vw of America that this was an isolated incident. The gm and service dept mgr at the vw dealership told me they had never heard of this problem.

I am requesting that the agency please investigate the performance of the ignition coil plugs on the model year 2000, Volkswagen, Jetta. I have experienced multiple stalling events and car not starting up after up or being parked after shutting off engine as a result of one or more ignition plus malfunctioning on my 2000 Volkswagen Jetta gl. As a result of the engine stalling and not starting when ignition is accelerated, I have also I experienced a loss of power steering and increased breaking efforts when I pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road. The car would not start when sitting for a while. After about 45 minutes or longer - I was able to start the vehicle although the engine operated at a reduced power. The vehicle will stall and will not start up for no reason at all. I feel very unsafe and nervous when driving - and have had the problem over and over and have paid for costly repairs. Still to no avail, it keeps happening. Tired of the vehicle - will never ever purchase a Volkswagen again! please investigate the electrical system ignition module on Volkswagen Jettas - year 2000 please ASAP !!! I have been stranded in the worst places with the vehicle - with no help to restart the vehicle.

I have recently had the ignition coil on my 2001 volkswagon Jetta GLS vr6 go bad again for the third time. This causes sudden power loss while on the road and could be extremely dangerous on highways or other high traffic areas.

Addendum to NHTSA action number: dp05004
over the course of the past 11 months, four of the ignition coils in my 2003 Jetta gli/ 6cyl have failed. The service dates for each occurrence are: 5-12-06, 8-9-06, 12-26-06 and 4-5-07. Upon the third failure in December 2006 I asked if my vw dealer could replace all of the original ignition coils, as clearly a pattern of failure was evident. The dealer indicated that they were only able to replace coils as they failed and that I could contact vw to voice my concern. I contacted vw customer service to request that they replace the remaining 3 coils, to again receive the response that they will replace the coils as they fail, but not proactively. (as long as my car is under warranty. )
today the fourth ignition coil failed and I am now outside of my warranty coverage. (warranty ended 2-28-07. ) I contacted vw customer service to file another complaint and was instructed that I will be responsible for the repairs as the car is no longer under warranty. Upon receiving this information, I researched the issue and found NHTSA action number dp05004, which indicates that vw issued customer service campaigns on 1-31-03, 6-6-03, 12-03 and 1-04 instructing dealers to replace all ignition coil packs in model year 2000-2003 Volkswagen Jettas. Upon finding this information, I called vw customer service again to see if my car would be covered and was informed that my VIN was not covered by the csc, as csc's are VIN specific, not model/year specific. I would like the NHTSA to re-open action number dp05004. The ignition coil issue is still occurring, and vw is not authorizing dealers to replace all of the suspect ignition coils as indicated when this action number was closed.

Yesterday my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta vr6 started shaking slightly when I started it and at first I thought nothing of it, but as soon as I got out of the parking spot I was in the mil light (malfunction indicator light) came on and emission workshop started blinking on the little screen on my dash. There was a major loss of power when driving the car, I had to nurse it home! I have been reading up on these issues and apparently for vws and Audi's (certain models) of the years 2001-2003 have been having the same problem with the ignition coil. The sad thing is, when you actually call the vw service number they ask for your VIN and if your vehicle isn't in the span for that recall they do nothing to help you. Yet they are supposed to be working on fixing the ignition coil problem with all 2001-2003 models.
In regards to investigation dp05004, I also experienced this same problem about 2 1/2 years ago. My 2002 Volkswagen Jetta engine lost power, and stalled. When the dealer checked my car they said it was my ignition coil and didn't inform me that there was an investigation. I was told I had to pay for the coils, which I did. I have a copy of my paperwork for the repairs. Is there anything I can do?.
When I started my car to go to work, it started to misfire and run very badly. My husband took it to the dealer to have it checked out. It turned out to be a bad coil pack, #2 cylinder not firing. The technician told my husband that this is a very commen problem for vw. I did an internet search to find out how commen this was. To my suprise, this is extreamly common to vw. There was a recall on the 1. 8 turbo motors but none on the 2. 8 v6 motor. My concern is why no recall on 2. 8 motor if this is so common on this model. Please reply. Thanks katja herrmann.
: the contact stated while driving at 35 mph on normal road condition problems were notice with the traction button for the esp system. The vehicle was taken to the dealership who determined the black brake switch failed. The brake light switch has been replaced for the purple brake light switch twice. The black brake light switch had a recall for 2002 model but does not cover the 2003 models. Additional problems are associated with the brake switch, which includes the traction button for the esp system and the park position lever which locks often. Also the contact once became stranded on a highway when the vehicle stalled and could not be restarted. The vehicle was towed to the dealership who replaced the ignition coil. All repairs made by the dealership has been covered by the vehicle warranty. The contact expressed concern about brake lights because represents serious safety problem.
While starting up the vehicle engine check light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. This caused the vehicle to stall. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the ignition coil needed to be replaced.
1) transmission slips, and causes a thud. Have taken vehicle to dealership 3 times and nothing has been done to correct this problem. 2) led display disappears. Have informed dealership of this problem twice and nothing has been done to correct this problem. 3) brakes are mushy. Have informed dealership once and nothing has been done to correct this problem. 4) vehicle is sluggish when accelerating. Have informed dealership once. 5) engine light has come on, and there is peculiar smell. Have informed dealership once.
Since buying my Jetta new in 2002. I have had nothing but problems. Twice the ignition coils failed, and I had to have the car towed. They wouldn't replace all the defective coils the first time. So, now that I know my car is unreliable, I won't be using it for long trips, which was my main reason for buying the car. Then last night on my way down the road, the heated seat caught on fire and burned a whole in my seat, not to mention what it did to me as I was driving. This car just seems totally unsafe. First there is no power when the ignition coils fail, then the driver seat catches on fire as I am driving down the road. Of course the dealer can't get me in until later this week.
Vehicle quits running after being driven on the highway for a period of time when coming to a complete stop then attempts to turn left.
Ignition coil has failed, causing vehicvle to lose all power. Dealer notified.
Consumer states that while driving and with no warning vehicle will stall, and it will be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. The ignition coil has failed. Dealer notified.
I own a vw Jetta 1. 8t. It has just over 14,000 miles on it. When I was driving on the freeway to work, the car started shuddering violently and then the malfunction indicator lamp came on. I was amost run down by a truck behind me, as the car began to lose power quickly. Vw refused to reveal any information and the dealer took three days to attend to the car and refused to provide a loaner car. This would have been ok in other circumstances, except that the problem was due to a faulty ignition coil and I felt extremely cheated to find out that vw and their dealers were aware of these problems in 1. 8t models all along, but have refused to recall these cars or provide any assistance to their consumers. Vw will not replace all the ignition coils, just the ones that failed. Now I am very worried that I will be run over the next time another ignition coil happens to fail while I am driving down the highway. Shouldnt vw be made responsible for their faults and more importantly for trying to decieve their customers?.
Ignition coil failure in 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t.
2002 vw Jetta with 1. 8 turbo. Faulty ignition coil requires dealer replacement. 1) part on back-order, so car remains undriveable and in shop for up to 2 weeks. 2) vw policy is to not replace other 3 ignition coils despite known failure rate. Car is under warranty and dealer & vw America admit that part is defective, but car is no longer dependable in light of risk of future coil failure.
Coil pack for 2002 Volkswagen Jetta gli (engine: 24v vr6) went bad. Car no longer able to be driven and is at service dealership for indefinate amount of time because replacement parts on national backorder.
1998 Volkswagen Jetta vr6 has had second ignition coilpack fail, creating a dangerous driving condition and rendering the car inoperable. Car currently has 58,000 on Jan. 13th. , 2003 and required ignition coilpack replacement. Ignition coilpack was also replaced on 06/26/2000 when vehicle had 34,119 miles. Volkswagen service manager agrees that this failed prematurely, but customer complaint center refuses to acknowledge a problem exists. This problem caused vehicle to stall and sputter in highway traffic, thus causing a dangerous situation for my family and surrounding vehicles.

Coil pack failure while accelerating to get onto highway. Seems to be a widespread occurence.
I was 1300 miles from home and 3 hours from the nearest dealership when my coil went out and I had to spend extra time away from home. Car only has 12000 miles and now the dealer tells me the others will go soon.
1 ignition coil on my 2002 1. 8t vw Jetta wagon failed on Saturday 12-19. Car has been towed to the dealership, still awaiting part to arrive!!.
While driving my 2002 vw Jetta (1. 8t) into traffic a coil pack failed and the car lost all power. It was quite possible that I could have been hit by traffic turning into my lane because the car loses all power when this happens. This is the 3rd coil pack to have failed on me in the last 5 months, and I am a bit afraid to take the car on long trips due to the vehicle undrivable conditions. I am even somewhat afraid to proceed into traffic in certain conditions because if a coil pack fails I will be put at the mercy of other drivers reactions and ability to stop. Ts.

I have a 2002 Jetta 1. 8t and have been to the dealership 3 times now in the past month and 1/2 for coil pack failure. Had car in shop 1 day for first coil, one week for 2nd coil, and 1 1/2 week for third coil. Just have 10,000 miles on car.
Number (4) coilpack on my 2001 vw Jetta wolfsburg went bad and the car was rendered undrivable until I used another form of transportation to get to a nearby dealer to buy a replacement.
I purchased the 2002 1. 8t Volkswagen Jetta on 1/09/02. My service record begins on 1/23/02. From day one, I have pointed out that this car leaks/has wind noise from doors/windows. Seals were replaced on drivers side doors on 6/27/02. Leakage/moisture to date, is an issue. Now there is visible water damage and mold growing along drivers side. Issue- poor quality product. Dangerous mold growing-health factor! ignition coil failure twice! radio has blown twice- faulty wiring! car lunges when started or hard to stop once running. My situation is not "special". There are many others that have purchased this product and have their safety compromised. Ignition coil is a suppose to be a recall, but only when they fail. Volkswagen of America will not replace until you are stranded! this is a severe safety issue. Mold growing in my car is a severe safety issue.
Car lost power and started shaking. It would only go 10 mph. Took it to the dealer and found two of the ignition coils were broken. Dealer would only fix the broken ones because vw won't fix all four, even though he admitted the others would probably break.
Consumer lost power when starting the vehicle. Also, when driving vehicle hesitated. The ignition coil was replaced at least twice on recalls. Manufacturer told the consumer to change the gasoline. However, vehicle still operated in the same manner.
Vehicle's transmission failed. The transmission had gone out when it was under warranty. It had taken three weeks to get the vehicle back at that time. The following year, the vehicle started to jerk. The vehicle was out of warranty. It wasn't until the vehicle stopped again, the consumer was told the transmission had leaked. There were numerous repairs. The vehicle was placed in the shop for the timing belt and the cylinder head. The vehicle also had to be taken in for a protective shield in the right rear wheel housing. The distributor cap, ignition rotor, and the spark plugs were replaced. Repair was also made to the wire for the ignition coil/cam shaft. The ignition switch was replaced and the engine control modules.
