I was sitting in traffic in minneapolis mn. The light turned green, traffic moved and when I pressed on the accelerator, the engine sped up as if it was in neutral. The shift selector was in d for drive. The prndl indicator on the dash flashed red with all five letters illuminated. I tried turning off the ignition and turning it back on with the same results. No movement with engine accelerating. After being pushed into a parking lot by passersby, I tried again and the transmission worked as it was supposed to. After researching the problem on the internet, I find that it is a common vw problem and the NHTSA action number is pe09035 opened July 17, 2009 covering 2008 and 2009 models. My tdi is a 2006 model purchased in may 2007 because vw kept selling 2006 tdis in 2007. There were no 2007 vw Jetta tdis.

While driving home at night, my son and I smelled smoke. We exited the vehicle, checked under the hood, but found nothing. We continued home and parked in the garage. Still smelling smoke, we re-inspected the vehicle, but were unable to determine an origin or any visible evidence. Both seat heaters were on during the drive home, but the seats showed no visual signs of damage after parking. Next morning we opened the vehicle to discover the cabin was filled with smoke with an approximate 1?hole burned up thru the passenger seat on the lower right bolster. Apparently the seat heater initiated a thermal event which erupted in a seat fire after we turned off the ignition and parked the car in the garage. Fortunately, the fire did not engulf the vehicle or it could have caught our home on fire, resulting in possible injury or death to my family. I believe we ?dodged a bullet? because the seat fire did not sustain itself and engulf the vehicle. Vw has agreed to repair the burned seat at their expense and make a mitigation repair. However, vw has declined my request to cover any similar mitigation repair to the other seat. In October 2004, the NHTSA odi concluded that ?driver-side seat heater may fail or malfunction due to normal vehicle use? but ?such failures do not pose a significant risk of injury or fire. ? the odi stated the investigation did not conclude ?that a safety-related defect does not exist? and ?the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances. ? evidence and reports indicate that seat heater caused thermal events in both driver and passenger seats in the vw Jetta have been an issue for nearly 10 years now. Near misses continue to occur. I believe that a seat fire is a significant safety concern. I would encourage the NHTSA to re-examine the circumstances to determine if further action is warranted.

Power door lock system failure. Can not lock entire doors. Key got stuck and could not remove key from ignition. Had to call a tow-truck, pay ($350) and have taken to dealer. Dealer recommended replacing entire power door systems. Cost me about $450. . . Went ahead and approved replacement. $350 + $450 = $800. Power lock failed again. . . Sep-oct 2012. Dealer again recommends replacing entire power lock system. What???? no recall has be implemented or set. . . .

On a cold March morning, was not able to put the key in the ignition. After a few minutes of unsuccessfully trying to force the key in, vw roadside assistance was called. The car was towed to the nearest dealer. When dealer looked at the problem, it was determined that the tumbler in the cylinder was in the locked position. The dealer sprayed with silicone lubricant to coax the tumbler to release.

At about 50,000 miles as I was driving uphill the engine felt as if it was failing and losing power. It regained power, but the check engine light came on. I took it to an independent mechanic who ran a diagnostic, and found many codes on it, but nothing wrong. He cleared out the computer and sent me on my way. I now have 87,000 miles and have been having the same problem continuously. Now, I have to take my car regularly by my mechanic to have the computer cleared out. The check engine light came on 2 days after he cleared it last time. I called Volkswagen and they said there is no recall on the electrical system, but that they have had this complaint before.

While driving in the afternoon, my vehicle suddenly lost power and acceleration capability with the "check engine" light coming on and blinking. I took it to the dealer immediately. I am informed my 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t has "3 faulty coils. " the failure was sudden and without warning. I maintain my car according to vw specs. In 02/2003 vw acknowledged a problem with this in over 530,000 2001 to early 2003 vehicles. I feel the failure was premature (as to what could be typically expected of an engine/vehicle for reliability), and a danger. Obviously the fact that it has remanifested in such a short period of time shows that it was not properly addressed with the original fix only 2 years ago. My vehicle was unable to adequately maintain itself within the flow of traffic. I was lucky to get to the 'slow lane' without incident. Vw disclaims any responsibility for defect or otherwise and says that because the vehicle is out of its warranty period I am responsible ($454. 00). I will pay this, but how can I drive knowing that these coils could stop all or any one cylinder from correctly firing? this could kill me and the manufacturer does not care. . As they quite bluntly stated.
On 2/1/06 I leased a new 2006 Jetta only to have the engine not start on 2/27/06. I was stuck in a gas station parking lot with a dead cell phone awaiting a tow truck for 1. 5 hrs. The car was brought to the dealership and they had no idea what was wrong with it. Later that day they told me possibly a fuel pump but weren't sure and that I should arrange for a rent-a-car. They had the car for 3 days and when I picked it up they stated it was a program that needed to be updated and everything is fine. It is now a week and a half later and the ignition key wouldn't turn in the ignition. I continued to switch between my alarm key and mechanic key until it finally turned and started. Once on the road the car died in mid drive. The engine completely turned off while doing about 25mpg. Thank god there was no one around me, the car came to a stop and restarted immediately and driven back to work. Leaving work the car didn't turn over at all. You could hear the cranking of the engine but was not turning over, the same problem as before. The car is now at the dealership again, no loaner car was given to me and there was several complaints already underway. Another problem is the cars engines sound. When the car is initially started in the morning it is a hard loud rough sound that gives after a minute or so.
Glow plug control unit fails on 1998 vw Jetta tdi, but there is no part for the last 5+ months available from Volkswagen. Also, there is no estimate of when Volkswagen will have a part available. This is nationwide. The control unit is essential for the starting of the car.

My 2000 Jetta vr6 has been experiencing coil issues for the past 3 years whenever the weather is wet/rainy and high humidity. If the car sits idle for 6-8 hours with a cold engine it is very difficult to start the engine without constant sputtering. There is no power in acceleration until the engine warms up completely. During this time the check engine light flashes and remains on until the next time I start up the engine or until the weather becomes less humid. This also occurs when driving thru a puddle of water causing it to splash the coil area. I replaced the ignition wires to the tune of $145 but that did not alleviate the problem.
My 2001 vw Jetta has been in the vw shop 7 times for failed coils they fix it and about 4 months later the check engine light comes on and the engine runs rough. They always say if the part fails they will replace for free, seems everytime we take it in they claim something else caused it.
Please refer to my previous complaint submitted 9/17/2005 regarding my '02 vw Jetta. The crash was a result of sudden acceleration and extended braking distance. The reason I am writing again is to address the fact that my local news (denver channel 7 news) did an undercover feature in regards to the Volvo's sudden acceleration and deceleration. The mechanic used in the piece determined the problem was the electronic throttle. Thus, Volvo is announcing a major recall on all 1999-2002 Volvo's. This issue is rampant among the auto industry including vwoa. Please extend your investigation to include vw and hopefully vwoa will do a major recall on all cars equipped with electronic throttles. Please note that I was required to attend dmv court since I was issued a ticket. The judge ruling over my case ended up dismissing my case because of the evidence I had brought to court. More over, the judge was a former mechanic for 8 years and he has worked extensively on vw's. He was very familiar with my situation. I don't have my VIN # handy, but it was listed in my complaint odi id #: 10136890. Please refer to my case number for further details.
Consumer vehicle stalled on two different occasions causing consumer to replace coil. The vehicle had erratic acceleration light pressure on the gas pedal. The engine did not respond in an even pattern, instead it would suddenly speed up dangerously.
2001 vw Jetta GLS 2. 0 w/automatic transmission. The car gets stuck in park and will not change into drive or reverse. I was told by the dealer that the brake sensor or the epc (electronic power control) needed to be replaced.
2001 Volkswagen Jetta glx vr6. Vw released a recall online stating recall on all 2001 coil packs. My coil pack arc'ed as dealer calls it. Arc burned up ignition wires, spark plugs and engine stopped running. Dealer wanted $900 to replace faulty coil pack and ignition wires and plugs. Coil pack not only went out but took out multiple parts. Dealership didn't care about the problem nor did vwoa. There is a serious problem here I have read 1,000 of similar claims from Jetta owners online. Recall should be made and drivers should be repaid for repairs made.
I bought a used 2002 Jetta and as soon as I drove it off the lot it began with the bucking. It took 3 visits to the service department, 2 different service sites, and 3 weeks without a vehicle to find the problem. The service department is replacing the coil, however stated they were going to charge me. I am currently disputing the charge. I feel unsafe and unhappy with my purchase.
(1) at start up (generally cooler, oregon nights) is when problem occurs, and randomly; (2) car stalls without warning. Have been in dangerous situations when turning left or trying to clear intersection when car stalls for no reason. (3) have taken car to dealer many times - they can't figure out the problem. Car remains dangerous.

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS vr6 has recall for faulty cruise control brake light switch. The engine light illuminated and after a diagnostic was performed it was determined a new catalytic converter was needed. It was finally determined that the converter failed due to a faulty coil pack.
Vehicle misfiring like a chocking sound and jerking while emitting black smoke from exhaust. Vehicle stalls and service engine light comes on. Vehicle starts after several sttempts. Vehicle stalls in middle of intersection while turning left.
My 1999 Jetta iv (GLS vr6) needed a new coil pack at 75,000 miles (rough operation in wet weather; engine light finally turned-on). I have read that the replacement of the coil pack on the 1999 Jetta's is extremely common. A recall on this part has been issued for the 2000 and 2001 vehicles, but not for the 1999. I also read that some individuals may be in pursuit of obtaining legal actions to resolve matters. The part and labor is expensive. Please advise on whether a recall for the 1999 coil pack of Jetta vehicles will be acknowledged?*a.
