2 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/16/2017

The car randomly stalls while driving whether at highway speeds or in town. This causes a loss of power steering and power brakes which is inherently dangerous in certain situations. It has been doing this regularly with the previous owner for the last 3 or 4 years and has done it 4 times while under my ownership since September 2017 it usually happens while there is less than 1/4 tank of fuel. When it happens there is no check engine light nor does the ecu store any codes from the problem. Previous owner made several repairs including a fuel pump and filter, engine speed sensor and alternator wiring harness in an attempt to fix the issues with no success. This issues also comes up regularly on several vw forums and no one seems to have an answer. This is a known and regular issue with no consistent repair and needs to be remedied.

3 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/20/2015

Yesteday, the engine shut down after I got off freeway at offramp. As I came to a stop at the traffic light and engine stopped. Had a flashing "glow plug" icon on dash for less than a minute and little no acceleration before exiting freeway. Would not restart. Had to have car towed 50 miles to home. Today I find a dtc of p0087, fuel pressure too low. I unscrewed the screws holding the fuel filter assy top cover. Lifting the cover, I saw metal particles on top of the fuel filter. This always means the hi-pressure fuel pump has failed - forcing metal particles to the fuel tank, hi pressure fuel rail, fuel injectors, fuel filter and fuel lines.

4 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/04/2015

Year: 2010 build date: Aug 2009 make/model: Jetta sportwagen tdi tranny: 6m mileage: (actual miles at time of problem or when problem began) 57,500 diesel fuel source: shell and chevron additives: nope problem: took my tdi to an independent. First time ever (always dealer serviced). Had a check engine light come on. Code was a fuel pressure sensor. Replaced. Car would not start. Found rust in fuel filter canister. Found rust on the in-tank pump. Replaced all three pumps, canister, fuel lines ¿ independent took it one piece at a time as to not overcharge. Ultimately, replacing the hpfp solved the issue. In fact, the fuel pressure sensor they originally replaced they put back in and it worked, so they returned the one from the dealer. Dealer: charles maund, austin, TX status: since I had my work done at an independent, vw of America is scoffing at payment as noted under the extended warranty repair because the fuel was not tested by someone at vw. I still have the same tank of fuel as it had when it went in, but they refuse to test it citing that I could have put anything in there. I have receipts for my last tank of diesel, and mileage/current tank levels to prove that it is the same. Car has had all the required factory warranty inclusions, like the stickers and the filler tank guard. What's more, at 56,000 miles (three months ago) I had the 60k maintenance done at the dealer. Dealer says they replaced the fuel filter and that the rust in the canister is likely because of all the rain we had those three months. My car is garage kept and hardly used, as you can see from the miles, but that is their story. Currently asking to talk with senior level customer care. Not feeling good about this, especially with everything happening with dieselgate. Out of pocket costs are $2600 to date. I have kept all the parts.

5 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/23/2015

I have a 2012 Jetta tdi that is now just out of bumper to bumper warranty, except the 10yr/120k coverage extended on the known poorly designed hpfp (investigated in NHTSA action pe10034). I do a fuel filter change early 15k from the last dealer change at 44500 miles. . . And I find metal particles in the fuel filter. This is not normal, and indication of wear, and source is almost certainly the hpfp cam and roller/piston which is lubricated and cooled by diesel fuel recirculated to the filter via bypass, and some of this ends up in the fuel tank, and worse can end up in the injectors causing injector failure, even possible burned piston heads and catastrophic engine damage. I assume the path forward is document my findings, I did this with high resolution digital pictures, printed for the dealer, and a pristine white rag turned grey with metal filings, along with the old filter delivered for their inspection (I even provided the vcds diagnostic print out for the vehicles self-diagnosis). Since I did the filter change, and about 100 miles and one day later, there is no more evidence of these metal particles in the system. . The dealer service department tried, vw would not authorize a pump replacement. . So I called and vw explained the situation to them, they did not bother to record name or VIN, clearly not interested in “customer care”. Official vw policy seems to be to ignore the metal filings and the customer, they offer a bogus explanation that metal filings could come from fill nozzles, or some other source (unlikely, I also own a diesel truck, and with longer service time, with more fuel used, there were no metal particles at nearly 30k miles. I now have a car I can’t trust, knowing the hpfp can suddenly fail without warning and leave my family stranded, even cause an accident if it happens in a busy interstate, or when pulling into traffic.

6 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/09/2015

During February, the 2012 vw tdi Jetta sportwagen with 59,7000 miles stalled twice when trying to start the vehicle. On the third start the vehicle started but the glow plug light was flashing and the car would not accelerate to more than 45 mph. The vehicle limped to the dealership, who found metal flakes in the fuel filter and stated that the in-tank fuel pump had failed. The in-tank fuel pump was replaced and the fuel system was apparently cleared of metal. At 63,000 miles, the glow plug light began to flash while at highway speed and the vehicle began to lose power. I got the vehicle to an exit, stopped it, turned the vehicle off and restarted. The glow plug light was no longer flashing and the car was drivable although it was lacking some acceleration and there was a moan/whine noise coming from the engine. Got the car back to the dealership and learned that the high pressure fuel pump has failed and that the entire fuel system needs to be replaced. There is no mis-fueling issue, and diesel receipts are kept at fill up.

7 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

Brought to dealer for a dpf light. Dealer diagnosed with a clogged particulate filter replaced under warranty. Picked up car drove about 5 miles and the glow plug light came on turned around and headed back to dealer car went into limp mode (on i93 rush hour traffic) shut car off in vw parking lot and tech could not get it to start again. Received a call next day with the hpfp failure news and the fragment went through the entire system. Dealer tested fuel and confirmed no gas in the 3/4 of a tank that is in the car currently.

8 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/17/2014

Ref: NHTSA action number pe10034. Regarding my 2014 Jetta tdi (diesel): fuel tank was approximately 3/4 full. Filled remainder (approx. 1/4 tank, 3. 5 gallons) with ulsd auto diesel fuel at a service station in portage county, OH. I noticed an almost immediate loss of approx. 4 mpg in fuel economy. After researching the issue on various Volkswagen tdi/diesel internet discussion forums (in addition to various chevy and/or Ford diesel pickup truck internet discussion forums), the symptoms seemed to coincide with damage to the bosch cp4 hpfp (high-pressure fuel pump). Symptoms include: -- loss of fuel economy. -- minor hesitation even on smooth, level roads that gets worse over time. -- presence of metal "flakes" or "shavings" in the fuel filter canister and other parts of the fuel delivery/return system. -- I drove the vehicle to the point of purchase (an official Volkswagen dealer), and requested they provide me with a visual inspection of the fuel filter and fuel filter canister. This inspection confirmed the presence of naked-eye-visible contaminating particles (suspected to be aluminum metal "flakes" or "shavings") in the fuel filter canister, and possibly other parts of the fuel delivery/return system. Due to the fuel delivery/return system design, these metal "flakes" or "shavings" can be re-introduced into the high pressure fuel pump without being trapped by the fuel filter, causing further damage to the hpfp and cascading contamination (generation of additional metal "flakes" or "shavings"). Once fuel flow through the hpfp, fuel accumulator rail, and injectors becomes sufficiently restricted by contaminants, the hpfp can fail catastrophically, resulting in a sudden loss of engine power. This, in turn, can lead to a loss of vehicle control due to the absence of power steering. Case opened with vw customer care.

9 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/26/2014

While driving, a warning message briefly appeared stating engine management malfunction followed by a blinking heat coil light. The manual said to take to repair station as soon as possible, but within 1 mile the Jetta tdi lost power, my car almost stopping and eventually losing all power. Lukily I was not on the freeway where this would have been very dangerous, and I was able to pull to the side of a country road, calling for a tow truck. Analysis following instructions on a vw service bulletin shows the primary fuel pump that supplies the system failed and the vane pump released metal into the entire fuel system, getting past the filter (another defect?) and going all the way to the injectors. The entire system except the gas tank will need to be replaced. Vw says this $7000 repair is not under warranty. Vw should have recalled the faulty fuel pump and faulty filter that allowed the metal to continue into the entire system. I am being told that one dealership is handling 2-3 of these cases a week! I find on the internet that this has caused accidents.

10 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/09/2013

On 5/31 we filled our tdi after getting 515 miles on our previous tank of fuel. 5/31 was my last diesel fillup in my tdi before my issue came about. At that visit on 5/31 we added 14. 207 gallons of fuel to our 14. 5 gallon tank. About 12 days passed from our last fillup and after 405 miles or 3/4 of a tank of fuel usage since our last fuel up on 5/31 we went on Sunday 6/9 to start our vehicle. It started and then quickly died. We then tried to turn the vehicle over again and it would turn over but the engine would not ignite seemed to be a fuel issue to my husband) but in all efforts he tried to jump our vehicle . . . . No fix. On Monday we called for a tow we arrived to the dealership and the dealership got our car into the shop. . . Diagnostics stated that we had gasoline in our diesel vehicle. . . At no time did we ever or have ever put gasoline in our car we have had this car for almost 29k miles and are other diesel product owners. We were blamed over and over again that we put gasoline in our car but thankfully we saved the reciept of our last fill up that stated we did put diesel in our vehicle the dealership stated they had to drian our fuel tank and replace our fuel filter. . . . This would be at a cost of almost $300. We stated to them we wanted a sample of the fuel drained and they did give us this. Our arguement to the dealership was why would our vehicle now decided not to start or run after â¾ of a tank of fuel and almost 420 miles on the tank of fuel. It seems very odd. The dealership was very quick to pass the buck to the gas station reading the reports and complaints I am not the only one this has happened to. Volkswagen owners state that there are known issues of the fuel system in the dsg tdi and still has not been recalled. I feel like I may also be another victuim of this blinded known corportate problem. Someone needs to be held accountable¦.

11 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

I started my car and for the first time ever, it hesitated and failed to start. I restarted my car and it started. I proceeded to drive home and about a half mile into the drive it hesitated and lost much of its power. A flashing glow plug warning light came on and then a quick message on the display about an engine failure and bring to service. I was about a mile from my vw dealership and drove towards it. About a quarter of a mile later, the car (still hesitating - now I know it is called "limp mode") made a grinding noise from the passenger side of the engine bay, and the car lost all power and stopped in traffic. I had to have it towed to the dealership, where they diagnosed a high pressure fuel pump failure. The entire fuel system (fuel tank, 3 pumps, all fuel lines, common rail fuel delivery system, fuel filter holder, fuel filter, fuel injectors) were replaced under power train warranty. I am the only person to fill this car with diesel fuel and always do so at reputable stations. The fuel was tested and did not contain gasoline or any additives. This car was first purchased in north carolina and is a us vehicle. I bought it from the original owner (at 6200 miles) and drove it to canada. It is registered in ontario. I have had all service done in buffalo NY at northtown vw while under warranty and this repair was also performed (as per vw of America restrictions) in buffalo NY. I had to pay the expense of having it towed from toronto to buffalo.

12 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/02/2012

Four failures in four months. This is a repeat failure with my diesel fuel system. I previously reported the first two occurrences on this site. Volkswagen of America has now replaced my entire fuel system including the tank. This was only after repeated requests after four times to dealer for service for this issue--total time my car was in for service was 45 days over July through oct. 19, 2012. I was aware of the fuel pump failure after researching glow plug light flashing tdi and limp mode immediately upon the first time the lights started to flash on July 6, 2012. I went to dealer and they could not diagnose the problem. July 17 it happened again they found metal shards in the fuel filter and replaced the fuel pump. . . I requested they replace entire fuel system, explaining to the voa customer care person that metal shards go throughout the system, denied. Picked up my car on July 31 (after 15 days in shop). On sept. 17 warning lights/limpmode again. I again request they replace entire fuel system, no, only the pump in the tank. Pick up car sept. 28 (12 days in shop). Four days later on oct. 2, again warning lights/limp mode. Back to dealer, again request vofa to replace fuel system. No only the fuel rail. Dealer replaces fuel rail, takes for a test drive and it failed on them. Finally voa agrees to replace the fuel system. . . But not the tank. Only clean the tank. I request new tank, Volkswagen of american tells me I can go inspect the cleaned out tank. . . How will I see inside the tank. . . Voa cust service tells me then I better bring a flash light. Mind you I was dealing with the same cust serv rep [xxx] the entire time. They decide to replace tank. Pick car up oct. 19 (18 days in shop). Waiting for it to happen again. Only a matter of time and hope I don't get in accident due to it. Very stressful. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

13 Other Fuel System Hoses Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/15/2003

The fuel line on my 2000 Volkswagen Jetta recenty burst, making a sound like a balloon popping and leaking several gallons gasoline in the ten minutes it took me to get to a service station for an emergency repair. The mechanic who removed the fuel line (which I kept) showed me two small splits, but he was uncertain about what caused the damage. The Jetta's fuel line runs in a shallow channel under the car, but I was on a smooth, paved street at the time of the failure and don't recall hitting a pothole or anything else that might explain the damage. Two thoughts: despite being in a channel, clearance on the Jetta is low and the fuel line is rather exposed, so it might have been scraped or damaged at some other time. . . Perhaps by road debris or driving over a speed bump or pothole. The only other logical explanation would be a defective fuel line. If the former, then vw should consider a recall to relocate the fuel line in this model or install some type of shielding. If the latter, then vw should replace and upgrade the fuel line in this model. (my car has only 25,674 miles on the clock and I keep it well maintained, so it would hard to put the failure down to normal wear and tear. ) given the potentially catastrophic results of fuel-line failures, I felt it was important to bring this incident to the NHTSA's attention. Many thanks.
