9 Electrical System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 11/19/2009

I purchased a 2001 vw beetle new and I have had to take it to the shop 4 times due to seat belt warning light. This seems to be an on-going problem even after vw made a recall and supposedly "fix" the seat belt problem. This very first time this happened the car had less 1500 miles on it.

10 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 05/31/2009

I currently own a 2008 vw beetle and it's an automatic. When first getting the car I could tell the transmission seemed not smooth at all. When driving through an intersection from a red light my car had trouble when pressing the gas. It had a pause. Then when going down the high way when I was changing lanes to go infront of someone I pressed the gas and my car jumps. This happens all the time. Not something that happens once and a while. It happens every time I drive my car. The dealership replaced the transmission at on 5,000 but the problem still happens! then going down the road in the pouring rain my windshield wipers stopped working. They had to replace the motor. When I went through a drive through I rolled down my window and it made a horrible grinding noise that I thought the window was going to shatter. They had to replace the window motor. Then the same exact thing happened to the passenger side front and back window. Both my head lights keep going through $20. 00 bulbs. They had to replace the fuses. On my convertible top the side covers stopped going in and out. They had to replace those. Then on my way to work all the lights for the what gear you were in blinking. Which caused me to have the car towed because it was running in emergency transmission mode. They had to replace something with that. Right after that was replaced going down the road my car made a grinding noise so I turned around to take it back and it was something with the fuel intake that they had to replace. The dash board lights go on and off. The dealership said they could not find anything wrong with that.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 12/04/2008

I have had my windshield wipers replaced twice, and the last time was at a Volkswagen dealership. While driving during a two-day 18 hour road trip in varying heaviness of rain, the windshield wipers stopped working during a downpour on a highway. They froze mid wipe causing a temporary lack of visibility and potentially a fatal crash. After turning them off for a minute they started working again. Had this probably several hours later and again the next morning after they had been off for over 12 hours. This exact problem (stopped windshield wipers) did not occur again. However on January 17th, 2009, after using wipers continuously during a calm rain storm for a total of about 30 minutes, the wipers would not turn off. When the wipers were placed in the off position they continue to wipe back and forth rather quickly. The other speed settings work fine. Then, after turning off the engine and removing the key and starting the car up again, the wipers would not continue while in the off position, but after turning them on once they will not go off. Problem has not been solved and a Volkswagen specialist in austin, TX (where I ended up after my trip) had never heard of the issue.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 05/09/2008

Power windows and power door locks will not operate while I'm driving. Took to dealer and they could not diagnose the problem. Left it there for 2 days and they still could not find problem. When I stop the car and open the door, then the windows and door locks will operate. When I start driving again, they are "dead" once more and will not open or close. I cannot get them to operate unless I stop the car and open the door first. When I close the door, they are okay until I start driving again. Very dangerous and I can't go through a drive through bank, etc. Or if I just want to open the windows while I'm driving, I can't. If it starts to rain, I can't close the windows unless I stop the car.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 10/12/2006

Emergency light switch (hazard switch) there was a vw recall issued to replace this switch that not only controls the hazard flashers but also the turn signals, in the jetta, golf, & gti. My beetle uses the same switch I am wondering why it was not included in this recall (vw recall vx). My switch has the same intermittent problem as described in the March 2005 recall letter, I will be replacing the switch on my own accord, but this bulletin should include the vw New Beetle model in my opinion.

The car has been to the service department for the driver side tail light bulb to be replaced twice. Bulb replacement only fixes the problem for 2 to 3 days. There is some type of short and I keep getting hit with a service charge every time the vehicle goes in for this. Also the driver side seat is showing some beyond normal wear and tear for a vehicle with only 25k. The leather seating surface is tearing at the seams and appears to be of very thin materials in the bolster area.

28 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 02/17/2003

The 2000 New Beetle that my husband and I purchased apparently has a defect in the electrical system. We purchased the car in February 2003. At that time there were no problems. The first time I put gas in the car the check engine light came on. My husband contacted a local Volkswagen dealer to see about getting it fixed. He was told that this was a normal problem. If the gas cap wasn't put back on and clicked at least seven times, the light would come on. He was instructed to remove the gas cap, put it back on and turn it until there had been seven clicks. After that, we were supposed to do a cold start to make the light go off. This worked, but we have had to do it several times. The light will come on and go off, even though there are no engine problems. I have had another mechanic look at the car, and was told there were no problems with the engine, so it had to be a problem in the electrical system. After seeing some of the complaints that have been posted, I am worried about the possibility of the car stalling, malfunctioning, or, as in some of the other complaints have shown, the car catching on fire. I feel that the Volkswagen company needs to really examine this issue. We had to have a sensor replaced for the braking system earlier this year that was under recall, and we only got it done because we were at the dealership for routine maintenance. We had not received a recall notice at all. I don't feel that the Volkswagen company is concerned about any of the problems that are going on with this model. It is very distressing to think that I am stuck with a car that isn't worth what I paid for it because of defective equipment. This problem with the check engine is ongoing and I am not pleased with the response I have gotten from the dealer. It hasn't made the problem go away.

29 Electrical System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 01/31/2003

I started my car on 1/31 and the epc, check engine and traction control lights came on. The car would drive however had much less power and was very rough. I borught it into the dealership on 2/3 and they stated it was a coil. They refused to replace all 4 coils, only the faulty one, and I was told that only if this power failure occurs again and it is due to another coil. . . Then they would replace all four. I am questioning the reliability of my car, since it appears this problem has been wide spread throghout the us. I feel very unsafe in my year and half old beetle that was bought because of the high reliability rating at the time.
