38 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/10/2006

The antilock braking system on my 2000 vw Passat failed without warning at only about 61,000 miles. I have checked various websites and found that abs failures on Volkswagens from this era are extremely common--so common in fact that an entire industry has sprung up to rebuild the defective bosch abs systems in vw's and audis. Although there was no accident or injury as a result of this failure I still received an alarming message on the dashboard to stop while in the left lane of the NJ turnpike in heavy traffic and that could have caused a serious accident. There's absolutely no excuse for a failure like this at such low mileage to be so common.

40 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/15/2005

In November of 2005 my vw Passat began to intermittently have the abs warning light come on. My local dealer said it would be $2000 to replace the abs control module and that the part was not even available. After a simple search under "vw abs control module failure" it is clear that many hundreds of people have had exactly the same problem. This is clearly a defective part. It goes to the safety of the vehicle as warning lights indicate "brake failure" and stop immediately. From the many threads, and my experience, it is clear that vw is aware of this defect but does nothing. Why are they not forced to replace this defective part that effects the safety of my car?.

41 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/08/2005

My 2000 Volkswagen Passat has 92,000 miles on it and has never been in an accident. I have an error indicating that the computer can no longer communicate with the abs controller. According to one of the vw chat groups, the replacement pumps cost approximately $2000. I think the car is too new to have an abs failure and the cost is excessive.

48 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/01/2005

My 1999 vw Passat, has a abs control unit failure. The part # is 8e0 614 111b. After doing some research I notice that this is a big problem with vw. If this is such a common problem why have they not been recalled. I also notice that the newer models are now installed with a newer part, is this because vw was aware of the problem?.

53 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/20/2004

Earlier this month (10/2004), the abs brake failure warning (light and sound) on our 1998 vw Passat GLS started coming on sporadically. On oct. 20, I took the car to wheaton service center, a vw-only independent shop. They hooked the unit up to the diaganostic computer and got no signal. They also got not signal when they tried to access to engine computer, indicating that the abs computer has a short (the engine computer worked fine after they disconnected the abs computer. ) I confirmed this diagnosis over the phone with ftizgerald vw in frederick, MD. I later tested the braking on a wet road -- there was no abs, although the conventional brakes worked fine. The 1998 car, which we have owned since new, has been scrupulously maintained, as the regional vw factory rep can attest (from a drivetrain warranty repair done 5,000 miles ago). The car now has 69,000 miles on it. The wsc mechanics tell me that they see numerous abs failures in late '90s Passats, the web seems to confirm this. The widespread, premature failure of abs systems is a significant safety issue. Since the repair costs $2,500, many owners will simply disconnect the abs computer to avoid the annoying lights and sounds, and avoid the expensive fix. Having become accostomed to abs, how many will adjust their braking accordingly, especially the need to pump the brakes to avoid skidding?.

54 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/18/2004

Abs module failure. Was sudden/no warning. Electronic portion needs replacement. San antonio TX dealer. Failure occured w/less than 55k miles on vehicle. Was told this is a common problem w/this vehicle.

55 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/06/2004

This is concerning my 2000 vw Passat 1. 8t automatic(tiptronic) vehicle. I am having issues with my anti lock brake system. My car warns me of an abs failure randomly (warning lights come on and go away for no apparent reason) I have found a multitude of other people on the internet that experience the same exact issues with this car. I have contacted vw of America and was told that there is no known issue with the car (no recall) and that if in fact there are as many people having this problem, that they should call vw and also report it to the NHTSA. She said that if the NHTSA got enough complaints that they could force vw to do a recall. . Read more...

Abs brake failure.

60 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/21/2003

The abs module on my 1999 vw Passat has gone bad. I have read other posts about such failures. It went out when my car had about 105 k miles. Though that is a lot of miles, I don't see why a lot of high way driving would cause the abs module to fail. It's also a very costly fix. 1200 for the part and then another 200 for labor. That's 1500. My car is less than 5 years old.

61 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/16/2003

Abs unit failed from defect. I feel that this is a known defect in a manufactured part and vw America refuses to replace defective unit.

62 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/01/2000

When car is driven at highway speeds for about 1 hour, the abs light comes on. Mechanic at Volkswagen says that the abs pumps need to be replaced at a cost of $1700. Since this problem is intermitten, I decided not to spend the money for repair since I can still brake though without abs. But I explained to front desk customer service (at david michael vw in freehold, NJ) that abs failure is not part of normal wear and tear. That the manufacture should cover the cost, but they did not accept that argument.
