I purchased this car 2 years ago and have have the parking brake fail and break three times. The first time was shortly after the purchase and the car came out of gear in my driveway and began rolling. My 65 yo mom had to stop it and push it up as she was home alone. It turned on another time while I was crossing an intersection and I was almost t-boned. I had it replaced after this incident. In may 2020 the parking brake would not disengage and I needed to have it towed to my mechanic. The brake was stuck on and the computer control unit broke. I paid $2500 to have the unit replaced. In Dec 2020 (only 7 months later) the exact thing happened again. I was unable to disengage the parking brake and needed to tow it to my mechanic. The caliper and computer broke again. The cost is similar. This is a safety issue. If you look at any vw forums you will see this is a known issue with many people having their brake stuck and unable to engage/disengage the unit. I reached out to vw and had no resolution. I request the parking brake be recalled and everyone who had work done on it, including myself, received a full refund.

Ever since we purchased our Passat we noticed issues with alignment and uneven braking. After several attempts to address the issue with the service department of university Volkswagen in albuquerque, we learned that our vehicle would need the rotors and brake pads replaced after 40,000 miles. The rotors were warped and the front left pad was down to 1mm, while the front right still had 4mm left. We were told by the service customer representative that Volkswagen uses a softer metal on the front rotors so if they were very hot and then exposed to cold water (like going through a carwash) then the rotors could get warped. We believe our vehicle issue involved caliper bracket bolt tightness and it should have been included in recall #46h6.

Passat brakes started squealing at around 9000 miles. When serviced at dealer they stated brakes were fine. Squealing continued to 20k miles. Again serviced at dealer and said brakes were fine. Squeeling eventually stoped but after noticing severe vibration in steering wheel during freeway driving and when applying brakes, I stopped and took to nearby mechanic to inspect. He reported rotors are warped at 26k miles. This should not happen with a new car with light use. Since 3 years just passed car just exited warranty status. This problem might be due to the adaptive cruise control feature as it tends to apply the brakes hard during normal driving if set to setting number 1. To avoid hard braking, I have to keep the adaptive cruise at setting 3 which is what I've been doing when I do use it. Still, this seems to be a recurring issue in Passats as apparent on search boards online. Vw should upgrade their adaptive cruise control firmware and replace impacted owners brakes, rotors and calipers. Brakes should not start going out a 9k miles and have warped rotors at 26k miles. The dealer should have caught this problem while I was still under warranty instead of reporting no issues and passing inspection reports falsely. Make people safe, recall this safety issue immediately.

The emergency brake is locked on (in place) while the handle is down in the car causing the car to drive unbeknown to the driver that the brake is still on thus causing excess damage to the brake, caliper and rotor. I was told by my mechanic that it has been a problem with vw Passatts and jettas and that the parts are scarce because of that. The amount to repair was greater than $600. If I had taken it to the vw dealership they were going to charge me double that.

While braking on a hill the Passat made a clunking sound and a wrench service light illuminated. The brakes become soft and do not respond as quickly as before. In addition, when reversing, the brake pedal will become non responsive while the calipers hold the car in place. I am unable to move the car until I place it back in park and try again.
The rear break caliper exploded with only 52,000 miles while driving on the road with two small kids in the back seat. The brakes became unusable, as the fluid was spilling out and we coasted to a stop.

I own a 1999 vw Passat glx with 72,000 miles. Approximately one month ago, the abs light, the brake light, the oil pressure indicator, and the tachometer began to behave erratically. Two weeks ago, the right front caliper stuck in the extended position, starting a wheel fire at the rotor. I replaced the caliper, rotor, and pads. A non-vw service center replaced the remaining rotors and pads, replaced the master cylinder, and flushed/bled the entire system. The problem with the lights and alarms persists. The lights and alarms are usually absent when the vehicle is completely cold, then usually appear after several minutes of driving. The lights and alarms can disappear while driving, then reappear during later driving. I have not contacted vw directly, because I'm concerned what the estimate might be to attempt repair.

1. Normal driving
2. Rear brake rotor warp and excessive pad wear
3. 3 seperate incedenses of rear brake repairs. (there have not been any on the front brakes to date) 4 rear rotors and 3 sets of pads in 52,000 miles. The service manager at the dealer insists this is the normal wear pattern for the vehicle, especially the inner pad on the drivers side rear. . Vw of America is backing the stance that the dealer is correct. This has created an unsafe braking condition because th the brake pedal oscillates during all braking.

The consumer experienced total brake loss due to master cylinder failure. Also the right front caliper was damaged causing a fire and the right front wheel to seize.
