2 Dash Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/07/2008

I have had my 2001 vw Passat for 7 years now and have had it in the shop multiple issues including warped rotors (front and back), cracked chasse, electrical issues and various other problems. Before having this car, I had a Toyota for 8 years and in the 8 years I had the Toyota, I only had it in the shop for routine maintenance. This car is disappointing and everyone I talk to who has a similar model/year says the same thing. I think the 2001 vw Passat is a lemon.

4 Dash Wiring problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/16/2006

Numerous spontaneous electrical failures within 24 hours. A week ago today) the gas gauge on my 2002 Passat w8 went dead, both the analogue gauge and the computer readout; then the ac went dead, windows, horn, door locks and lock remote and lights suddenly stopped working. The radio stop working, then came back on, but the reception was very bad, a lot of static, and the radio did not shut off when the car was turned off and the key removed. I had to manually turn it off. While driving the speedometer & odometer went dead, all of the warning lights came on but the engine displayed no problems. I got a call from the dealer the next day, the car will not even start now. The comfort control module needed to be replaced, he stated that"it stopped communicating". $500. 00 for that. It's a week later today. My w8 is still at the dealer. It took them 6 days to get the comfort control module. They installed it and the car still will not start. My bill is at $630, and they want me to authorize more time so they can start tearing apart the wiring and the wiring harnesses. There are hundreds of postings on many websites from owners with the identical issues. The wiring is corroded going to/from the ccm.

6 Dash Wiring problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/24/2005

While en-route between dexter, michigan and grand rapids, michigan, cabin began to smell of smoke. Shortly thereafter, the cigarette lighter caught fire. Fire was extinguished with a halon extinguisher promptly. Examination of the components post-fire revealed a defective center conductor. Circuit was fused at 10 amps which was found to be blown, post fire. No injuries, no damage to personal goods, damage was confined to cigarette lighter assembly, which is poorly designed.

7 Dash Wiring problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/10/2005

Abs and brake light intermittently light up and sound an emergency. I've taken the car to two garages, and neither place can determine the problem. Sometimes I cani feel my abs system lock up if I am turning (not in any wet conditions); and in those occasions, I was fortunate that no cars had been coming toward me b/c I was unable to gain control. Neither mechanic saw any fault in my brakes, brake pads, shoes, etc. , so there is something electrical to blame; and this is a complaint heard often with 1998-1999 vw Passats. Either way, nothing has been done to correct the failure, only 300. 00 in diagnostics.

8 Dash Wiring problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/15/2004

I purchased a 1997 Volkswagen Passat vr6 at checkered flag BMW in June 2004, and since have discovered that the electrical system is horrible. First, the air conditioner( a/c) quit working, then the airbag light came on, and the ac started working for a day, then blew a chemical cloud into the vehicle, while I was on the highway. My eyes were burning (as well as my face) for the rest of the day. Finally, I have already had to replace the battery, and there's a slow coolant leak. May I suggest that we remove all vw's from America's streets? they are a total menace to anyone who owns them! I went to checkered flag vw, to have it serviced, and they wanted to charge 89 dollars a problem, just to look, then they said I could trade it for a new one. Why would I want a new one? I don't need to trade an old problem for a new, more expensive one, I just want a reliable work vehicle, and I wish I had stuck to my guns and bought another prelude. This thing will see the crusher when I'm done paying it off! four problems in not so many months. Only another vw owner would know that kind of frustration!.

10 Dash Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/17/2004

I bought the car from a dealer and know from carfax report the car was recently off lease. I put 15 miles on it and internally inside the dash black smoke radiated from the vents and sparks fell under the car. Within seconds flames shot out from under the dash. The fire company arrived in less than 5 minutes but by then the car was an inferno.

11 Dash Wiring problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

12 Dash Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/21/2003

Vehicle died while driving on 45 mph road. Starter and engine turn, but would not run. Advised dealer that this happened 1 year ago and engine fuse and horn fuse had to be replaced. No codes were in the computer. Dealer replaced fuse s232 and car started. During road test, car died again. Fuse s232 blew again and dealer found ecm and harness melted and was smoking. Dealer replaced ecm, harness and fuse and car ran. When customer received the car, the cruise control and dash lights were inoperative. Dealer reprogrammed cruise and fixed wiring of dash lights under warranty after much argument. Dealer did not know cause of mishap. This is the 2nd time the car has died while travelling on busy roads. I was nearly rear-ended twice as I pulled the car off the highway.

13 Dash Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/22/2003

I have vw Passat, 2001. It has around 30 000 miles on it. The clutch has gone down on this car and it needs to be replaced. Parts and labor for this repair are more than $2200. This car has electrical problems also. The warranty is gone after 24000k or 2 years. I have extended warranty on this car, but they don't cover anything from the long list of repair. I called to vw customer care and ask to reimburse me for clutch repair, since it must be after 10 years/100 000 miles power train warranty. They refused to participate. I complain about vw quality ( I have friends having trouble with vw as well). I believe that manufacture has to take care of bad product and cover the repair cost. I purchased this car brand new and I expect to have a quality item, not the junk for more than $25k. I also completely dissatisfied with vw service!!!!.

17 Dash Wiring problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/27/2001

I had shut off my car and when I went to turn it back on I had no lights, turn signals, dome light, horn, climat control or radio. I took it to the dealer they told me it happens on beetles and golfs all the time and that it was the ignision switch. They showed me the switch when they pulled it out. It had gotten so hot it melted right through the wires. There is no safety recall on this but if it gets hot enough to melt metal it could start the car on fire.

18 Dash Wiring problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/01/2000

The daytime and normal headlights don't work when engine is started. This problem is intermittent. Sometimes I would shut off the engine and restart it and the lights come back on. Another time, I just turned off the engine and let the car sit in my garage for a few days. The lights come back on when I start it. At other times, in addition to the headlight not coming on, the abs light comes on when the ignition is started. There are a lot of other electrical problems with my Passat, which I have fixed and reported here. Namely, the instrument cluster failed.

19 Dash Wiring problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/05/2000

Speedometer/tachometer and fuel gauges went crazy. With engine off speedometer reads 80 mph and tachometer reads 4000 rpm. This occurred after a cold start-up and is known to be an instrument cluster failure. It appears to be specific to 1996 model Volkswagen Passat glx models and is reported to be a $600. Or more dealer repair with a need to special order the replacement gauge/cluster assembly from germany requiring 4-6 weeks for parts delivery. This is unacceptable ! printed circuit boards and instrument clusters are not wear items and should not fail under normal operation. I am not about to pay vw $600. Or more to fix a known defect. It is certainly possible to use the VIN numbers to determine if this defect is limited to a certain production time period. Perhaps the vendor supplier to vw had some production problems that were discovered and corrected. Owner's of these vehicles should not pay for a known defect that results from normal vehicle operation.

23 Dash Wiring problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Passat

While driving in a parking lot the instrument panel failed to function properly: digital displays flashed on and off speedometer and tachometer gauges moving clockwise and counter-clockwise out of control, this pattern continued when vehicle ignition turned off.
