2015 Passat tdi sudden complete power loss while driving, including highway incidents. Vehicle stalls with no warning, creating immediate safety hazard. Symptoms match documented crankshaft position sensor failures in identical vehicles that vw has repaired under warranty for other owners. Vw customer care closed case requiring 'duplication' of safety defect before repair. Request immediate safety investigation. I am reporting today's incident however this issue has been occuring since may 1st and occurred on numerous occasions with today being the most unsafe.

3 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/18/2025

Today, as my wife was driving home, she heard a "crunch" noise while making a turn. Afterwards, the airbag light came on, and her steering wheel botton functions are not working, including her car horn. This all relates to the clockspring. This will be the third time we have had the clockspring replaced. This is extremely inconvenient, as the dealership is an hour away. The original clockspring didn't break until October 2023. The second broke and replaced in August of 2024. Now, we are scheduling to have the clockspring replaced again, 6 months later. I am unsure why the part is so unreliable. Whomever manufactures the part needs to do a far better job. This was our first new car, and now we regret the purchase due to this headache.

4 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/17/2025

In April 2025, my 2013 Volkswagen Passat developed serious issues: the steering wheel cover is lifted, horn and steering wheel controls stopped working, lights malfunctioned, and now the vehicle will not start. It also has an open takata airbag recall with no parts available until “after June” I contacted the dealership by phone and spoke to lykoto at molle dealership in kansas city. They have refused to provide a tow or a loaner vehicle. Due to this I have not had an in-person inspection. I no longer feel safe driving the car. The manufacturer has been notified of this via email due to their services being closed on the weekends but will contact over the phone Monday morning. Symptoms worsened over months and the no-start issue appeared recently. Will be taking to a private mechanic ASAP to have the no-start issue confirmed.

8 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/04/2025

Def system failed- cel came on w def light stating xxx miles to no start, codes p204f & 18097, now unable to start or drive car safely, 18097 code may cause abs & steering to shut off while driving & p204f renders the car unusable. Epa mod was never performed on my car per dieselgate settlement rules- & now the manufacturer(vw) is refusing to fix their mistake car has been in shop repeatedly for 30+ days at a time since 2022 for the def system and not once was the epa mod mentioned to me vw refuses to fix the def system or do the epa required mod- meaning I was sold a stop sale car. Also claiming I’m not entitled to warranty even though per their own warranty I am the first owner that I can see other then a dealership am now told by other tdi owners that are still under warranty that vw is refusing to fix anything to do with the p204f code.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/01/2024

My vehicle was part of the emissions scandal that I knew nothing about when I purchased it. I was not told. I have had it in over 15 times at the dealership with ongoing problems that they say they fixed but isn't and because of its other problems have occurred. The vehicle gets hot, and I am afraid to drive it out of fear of it exploding. It is a diesel and has stalled on me while driving after jerking on its own. Other issues are lights going out such as break lights, fog lights and doors locking up and not locking. Glow plugs, fan going out and now problems with the coolant system getting hot. I have taken it to Volkswagen tracy where I bought it several times, but they only charge me more in diagnostic fees and repairs. I noticed when driving on the highway people stay far at a distance in back of me than normal. Now with a recall on the airbags after it gets hot, I am afraid to drive it out of fear of serious injury or death to me and my family. Date is approximate and I have over 50 pages of repair invoices.

13 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

14 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/25/2024

Gas and oil comsumption is way too high … almost every 600-1000 the low oil lights turns on! check engine on almost all the time due to an error with the oxígen sensor. Epc light gets on very frequently and the car loses speed. Also vehicle has a constant rattlesnake sound when speed is low. Issue was reported some years ago to a local vw dealership in georgia but they never took care of the issue. Ongoing for a couple of years!. No additional details.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/16/2024

I own a 2016 vw Passat that I'm thinking of painting yellow and I don't like yellow. I was driving going about 75 mph on freeway in idaho and a truck from the slow lane started merging over into my lane I went to hit horn and it didn't work. I hit my brakes and I mean hard because he obviously didn't see me and he merged over into my lane but had I not braked as hard and when I did it would of been a collision. That's how I discovered my horn didn't work. I'm not a person who pulls up to someones house and taps the horn nor do I use it if someone is sitting at an intersection after the light turns green as if to say, "come on, pay attention, the light's green, now go" I don't like to do that because it makes everyone look and can cause confusion. I use it to prevent an accident! my clock spring went out on me a year ago. I'm told that's why horn doesn't work. Its also why my airbag light is on and my cruise doesn't work (which may not be a safety issue but I have found myself driving much over speed limit without trying to) and none of my driver assist features work. All controls connected to steering wheel don't work. I'm assuming since the light is on neither does the airbag and I know the horn doesn't. I see there have been recalls on this but looks like they drew the line at 2014. Checking into it further a lot of their cars, newer than 2014, like mine a 2016 have had same issue. I also see that the ones that were taken in for recall and replaced, broke again. I read that that led to an investigation. I don't see any more info. I learned that clock springs are supposed to last the lifetime of the car, so shouldn't there be a recall on the newer cars too, like mine 2016? I'm not impressed with vw, this is my 2nd one and will be my last. I now have to get a new water pump at 70k. I really would like to see a recall on clock springs and would like to know what the conclusion to the investigation was. Thanks, [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foi.

16 Electrical System problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/17/2024

My car is currently hacked! I've brought it to 2 different dealerships and they just blow me off. If my phone is on while in my car, it at some point will just not go, no matter how hard u press the gas. I've had my seats and mirrors move while driving. It downshifts superhard. But if someone else is in the vehicle, nothing happens. I've showed videos that the service ppl can't explain whatsoever. Also people seem to shine bright lights at my car for long periods of time and after that, my rpms go so high and stay that way even while braking. Also people seem to love to get on a riding lawn mower and just let it sit by my car running and then again my rpms go crazy. Someone please help me my next step is a lawyer and a lawsuit. There are too many incidents to record. And this all started a year ago when at a light on a highway waiting to make a left turn, when the light turned green for me to go, it died in the middle of the highway making a left turn. So I was dead in front of oncoming traffic and after 2 weeks of having my car they replaced a "throttle body" and I've been living in hell ever since. I don't even believe they replaced it, all they did was fuck my car up and I can't be exact but I believe at the time it had under 40,000 miles.

17 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/17/2024

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, several unknown warning lights illuminated and remained illuminated. Additionally, while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was then taken the dealer and the contact was informed that a diagnostic test was needed to determine the cause of the failure, and the contact was informed that the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000.

18 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/27/2024

The contact owns a 2015 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that upon turning off the vehicle, the infotainment system failed to turn off as intended, and the message "download" was displayed on the screen, causing the battery to become drained. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

19 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/21/2024

Our 2017 vw Passat had the clockspring replaced last year under warranty number vmp-18-11 at barnes crossing Volkswagen in tupelo, ms. The airbag stopped working and safety features such as adaptive cruise control were also not available. Not realizing the airbag would not deploy in the event of an accident, Volkswagen asked us to drive an hour to have it repaired which was considerably dangerous. As of today the clockspring they replaced once again failed with the same associated problems. I am submitting a report due to how dangerous this problem is considering they supposedly fixed the issue however it seems multiple people have reported the issue coming back. The fact the airbag could stop working at anytime due to a defective clockspring is very troublesome and make me worry in the event of an accident if the clockspring will fail thus not allowing the airbag to deploy.

20 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/08/2024

I believe my clockspring has malfuncioned and though it has had multiple recalls my car is not listed for recall. My horn is no longer working, as well as all the buttons in my steering wheel including cruise control and my airbag light is on. This is all directly correlated to a clockspring malfunction and I believe my vehicle should be recalled for saftey reasons.

21 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/21/2024

Clock spring has failed 5 times within a year. The first clock spring replacement failed two weeks after the repair. I the. Took it to a different dealership to be repaired. The second clock spring broke about 6 months later. The third clock spring broke two weeks after the repair. The fourth clock spring broke two months later and I am about to have it repaired within the next week. Due to the faulty clock spring, the driver side air bag will not deploy in the event of an accident and I have no use of the horn - both of which are necessary when living in south florida. There are only two dealerships within reasonable driving distance to have the repair done (while the part is under warranty). It takes at least a week, if not more, to get an appointment at the dealership to ensure they have the part at the time of the repair. During which time, I have no choice but to drive the vehicle without the use of the air bag. Even though I can tell when the clock spring is likely about to break, I cannot take it to the dealership for repair until it has actually broken. This is not only extremely inconvenient, but hazardous as I’d be without safety mechanisms in the event of an accident. This should not be a reoccurring issue with the vehicle. The dealership has gone as far as contacting vw support to ensure the correct part is replaced and repaired properly, yet it continues to happen. It is unrelated to my driving or the way the part has been repaired. It is simply faulty parts being supplied.

22 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/19/2024

The component that failed is in the official dealer report. I am not an expert however definitely an issue with electrical, engine, steering and acceleration meter. The car shakes/jolts aggressively. Once the shaking of the vehicle begins it accelerates with the breaks being pressed in under a red light and also under parked mode. In the red light case the vehicle then turns off the steering wheel freezes and all power comes off. The shaking/jolting takes place as I am driving as well. Which I then have to pull to the right to ensure my safety and others. This is major safety concern as it accelerates /jolts forward which can cause harm to pedestrians crossing the street, having me enter crossing traffic causing a major accident to myself and others. I have the brakes pressed in having no control of the vehicle. The vehicle turning off as I am driving is a major safety concern as I can cause an issue specially going on higher speed like freeways. The steering wheel comes into a complete freeze once the vehicle turns off as I’m operating the vehicle which then does not allow me to control the movement of the vehicle if I want to pull to the right away from traffic to avoid collisions. Once the car looses electricity and the steering wheel freezes I have to force my car to the right or a safe space. I then have to take my car key off the ignition and then turn it back on in hopes that it does turn on. No warning lamps have turned on. My dashboard is cleared with no lights. The dealer in downtown los angeles was informed of this issue, inspected and the report did come back reporting manufacturing issues. My vehicle did have a steering wheel recall before which I assumed was resolved as I did previously visit their center to ensure I was safe driving and leaving the dealer I trusted that the issue was resolved by their expert and experienced personnel. I am not sure or it’s unknown if this might have anything to do with the current issue I have.

23 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/21/2024

Like many other vw owners, one of the doors of my car would not close and the car was unsafe to operate. Some people reporting having been locked in the car (driver's side door will not open), requiring them to exit the passenger's side door. The problem relates to a design flaw in the door lock actuator. In the winter, if it rains for several days and then freezes, the physical workings of the actuator freeze. The fix in a plastic protective cover, however, it may cost up to $500 to repair this safety issue if the door failed in a locked state adn the door card has to be removed with the door closed. This issue started in the b4 platform and is still a problem in the b7 models. See this TSB https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2017/mc-10128042-9999. Pdf.

24 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/10/2024

My family and I have been vw owners for over 60 years. Unfortunately, the 2006 vw Passat has been layered with defects, negligent manufacturing issues, faulty wiring, electrical problems, computer glitches, to mention a few. There have been many recalls including an official recall by the NHTSA, for steering linkage problems and tie rod assembly which caused a loss of steering, crashes and deaths. Over 292 complaints are filed with consumer affairs, over 561 defects reported, and thousands of horror stories like mine about this car. It's considered a lemon by many car professionals. Many dealerships in the USA offered to inspect, and replace the electronic steering column lock free of charge and address any other concerns, which should be standard, reasonable behavior for all vw dealerships, mandated by this federal agency. Shortly after this car almost killed me in 2013, vw put me through countless stressful hours of calls, emails and the like and still refused to be fully accountable. Shortly after my almost end of life, the notorious vw emissions scandal spoke volumes. Vw was well aware of their defects including the electrical system in the steering column/immobilizer, (the system won’t recognize the key; a module in the car that connects the key and starts the engine is defective). In many cases, the entire steering column is defective and has to be completely replaced because the car’s pistons, internal combustion and engine are all subpar. Even the sunroof and drains are defective and every time it rains, there is a flood in my car which has caused life threatening mold and mildew. I am respectfully asking for your help in having vw provide me, a near 60 year old single woman, a safe, reliable, car without another defective sunroof and without defective water drains. It can be used as long as it's reliable and without deadly mold and mildew. I have photos. Thank you.

25 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/20/2023

I keep adding oil and the dealership says there’s nothing wrong. For electric problems the speakers have static noise and the screen goes black and turns on hours later. I took in my recently they said there wasn’t any problems with the car but I literally deal with it everyday. I told them my car shakes when I brake on high speed they said they checked car but found no issues I personally do not feel safe driving my car at all.

Defroster not working causing very low visibility and very unsafe to drive the car.

27 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/18/2023

Epc light came on within a week of buying car from dealer, took it to have it looked at and plugs and coil packs were shot, got that fixed and drove home and epc came back on and was running bad, shaking and everything, made me lose speed drastically in heavy traffic and almost caused accident, now car has been sitting in driveway for the last few months because I’m afraid to drive it and I can’t really get rid of it because I owe way to much on it!.

28 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/01/2023

Steering column makes noises when turning. Airbag light is on and the none of the steering wheel controls for the radio, phone etc are functioning properly. This is my college age daughter’s car and I fear the airbag won’t deploy in the event she was in a collision.

29 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/15/2023

The contact owns a 2016 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while parked, the horn, cruise control and the radio all became inoperable. The air bag not available, check clock spring and check oil warning message was illuminated. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 91,986.

30 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/14/2023

Volkswagen Passat 2012 Passat key won't go into ignition - trying to fit my key into ignition will not go in and or turn https://www. Cargurus. Com/cars/discussion-t55350_ds761427 www. Cargurus. Com removing the plastic steering wheel shroud, (t25 x3) then remove vw ignition switch, black plastic piece under spring pressure needs to come out, this piece is the piece that pushes the white plastic piece infront of the key. When this is removed, re-assemble. This same problem plagued my wife’s car, and me as I was dispatched to rescue her. There is a chance replacing all of this with new might fix the issue but removing the un-needed part accomplishes the same end goal, reliability for no cost, and no spray into ignition. Https://m. 31 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/07/2023

I take my car to the dealership for maintenance when it is scheduled. The ignition would not allow me to put the key inside. I did a little internet research and it seems to be a common problem with this car. I could not put the key in the ignition. I then used some wd40 and got it to go in eventually but thought I should report it as this could pose a safety hazard.

32 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/06/2023

The clock spring is out on the vehicle again.

33 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/01/2023

Any time it rains and the car goes through a deeper than surface level puddle/wet area where the nose of the car has to dip down (think by railroad tracks, high water retention areas with lack of drainage, etc) as soon as the car dips down into the water, the steering wheel will lock up and I am unable to turn. It's severely dangerous as there is no give at all to the wheel as it is solidly locked and if you happen to be taking a curve or changing lanes etc, you will not be able to turn the car. My husband and myself have narrowly escaped severe car accidents as this is random and there is nothing you can do except try to force the wheel to turn. When I say the wheel is locked, it's a good 15-20 seconds of desperation trying to turn the wheel before it finally unlocks and I am able to correct the direction of the car. Living in FL with high rainfall chances, including sporadic downpours that unfortunately leave situations like this to occur often, it is a severe safety risk for myself and for other drivers. I have been lucky so far that when this has occurred I have been able to eventually correct the steering, however there have been several severe near misses that are completely out of my control. Please help find a solution, as there doesn't seem to be a fix for this anywhere that I've looked. I do not want to spend money I don't have taking it from dealership to dealership for them to be just as stumped as we are. I have two young kids and not only do I not feel safe letting them in the car, I seriously dread any time it rains because of this issue. I'm not talking about driving through deep bodies of water, but normal rainy weather situations on everyday roads that are otherwise uneventful. Unfortunately I am in an area where water seems to gather quite a bit on the everyday roads I need for work and this situation is truly unavoidable. I put one date below as when it occurred, but it has happened several times in the last week alone due to heavy rains.

34 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/01/2023

As the trunk hatch opens and closes, the wiring to the hatch wears down, frays, and then shorts or breaks. This killed our rear view camera, which is a safety issue. This also can cut off light to the license plate. The rear hatch also cannot then be opened from the rear of the car, as the handle is electrical and gets disconnected, possible causing another safety issue.

35 Electrical System problem of the 2020 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/31/2023

My clock spring isn’t working after having my vehicle for barely a year. My air bag light is currently on. I can’t use my horn nor use any of the controls on my steering wheel. I’ve paid already 800 plus on previous car issues such as my harness hose. I’m still awaiting reimbursement. Further review and assistance needed.
