I am filing a complaint regarding the stalling issues I've experienced on my 2006 Volkswagen Passat 3. 6l model. The description below is a historical account of the problem and how it progressed to the current state. I first noticed the issue around 8000 miles or so where the key fob would get stuck in the ignition. After reading some posts on vwforum, I worked around the intermittent issue by clicking the gear shift 3 times to disengage the key fob from the ignition. Around 24k mile or so, I noticed the stalling issue immediately after the car was started. This problem was intermittent as well and seemed to occur during extreme weather conditions - cold or hot. At this time, the error 'steering column failure' would register intermittently. Around 60k the problem progressed and the frequency of occurrence increased. I reported the issue to the dealership and they were not able to reproduce the issue. Looking back at the multiple blogs and forums on this topic, I believe the dealership should have been familiar enough with the issue that further research into the problem would have been warranted. I was not aware of the widespread issue at the time and did not insist on having the dealer research the issue while the car was still in warranty. The inspection fee was enough to deter me from pushing further specially if the problem could not be reproduced. Currently, at 88k miles, the problem of stalling when starting can be reproduced at will. There is a workaround posted on the same vw forums of specific steps to start the car that I'm currently using. Otherwise, the car does not start and the errors 'steering column failure 'immobilzer defective' is displayed consistently. We also experienced two instances of the car stalling while driving on the freeway. I believe this is caused by the same immobilizer error caused by the steering column failure as the two errors displayed when trying to restart. This is a serious and life threatening issue.

A nice summer day transporting my family, including two small children to a baseball game. Temp was 80 f, no wind, mostly sunny. Came to a stop at a red light. When the light changed to green, pushed on accelerator. Vehicle hesitated, than accelerated slower than expected in a halting, herky-jerky way. Check engine light came on and the vehicle started to slow. I was able to move the vehicle off to the side of the road, where I contact road side assistance and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealer reported replacing the coil on plug ignition.

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Passat. While driving approximately 30 to 35 mph on normal road conditions; proceeding from a traffic signal with pressure applied to the accelerator pedal there was no power. There were several attempts before the vehicle was able to resume normal operation. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 8,742. Updated 3/8/10 the consumer stated the vehicle would hesitate and then stall. The ignition was replaced as well.
2004 Passat 1. 8t caught fire after a coil pack failed and the catalytic converter overheated. I only drove 5 miles after the coil pack failed trying to limp back to the dealer when the fire started. I put the fire out myself.

Bought a 2003 vw Passat 1. 8t in may 2005. Since then, I have taken the car to the dealership for repair 4 times now. The car will all of the sudden start running very rough and the check engine light came on. The first time, they replaced a "defective" spark plug. Within a few days of getting it back, it happened again. They decided to replace all the spark plugs that time. It happened a third time and they did not tell me what they had done to the car, but kept the car for a week. It is currently in the shop again (now for a week again) because it began to run rough, developed a slow oil leak, and does not always start on the first attempt. I have not yet heard from the dealership what is causing the problems. I asked them to check everything on the car. I have also lodged a complaint with vw of America.
1) on early model Volkswagen Passats with the 4cyl. 1. 8 litre turbo motors, the ignition control unit will fail with no warnings at all. 2)the car does not run properly. The owner is left with constant misfiring, and if driven can lead to serious emission troubles down the road. Since the failure is completely random and shows no signs of a problem, this can and usually will leave the driver and passengers stranded. 3)the unit must be replaced or the car will not run properly. I purchased a unit of the brand huco, because the oem unit (bosch) lists for nearly $400.

My 2002 vw Passat suffered another coilpack failure including a loss of power on a busy city street. The failed coils had already been replaced under vw's coilpack recall. Looks like the new coils do not fix the problem.

Engine starts to stall and misfires in traffic. Dealer refused to change recalled coils on 8-15-03 . Contacted vw help line and they indicated that their records show that dealer replaced the recalled coils even though he didn't. It appears the dealer filed a false warranty service claim with vw according to the information they received. Dealer still refused to change coils on 9-25-03.
Failure to provide replacement coils after manufacturer' s recall.
While traveling on the highway and without prior warning, the vehicle shut down and failed to restart. The #4 coil failed. There was a replacement (coil "l") which was not available until April. Vw never warned the consumer that the faulty "j" coils were replaced with faulty "j" coils.
Very expesive unreliable car with nothing but excuses from the dealer-manufacturer filled with lies, constant trouble with car and Volkswagen cannot fix properly plus refuses to replace a defective car twice over! they told me when I purchased this car that all the 2003 had fixed coil problems. They failed around 7000 miles. Also have replace the dash, reprogrammed computer, ruined a pillar upholstery, put in wrong oil, replace d a sprk plug thinking that would fix the missfire, still runs bad. Every time I have to go to the dealer its a 260 mile round trip! I got out of a 99 Passat that theysold me (unkowingly)wrecked and then coldnt fix so I traded up to this 2003 with lots of trouble. Nightmare vw for sure.
The engine shook violently and continued during the entire time the engine was on. It seemed to start at every ignition activation, the problems does not occur while driving or idle. It happened every time I am ready to go to work!!
I took the car three times to the dealership while warranty was still good - they could not find anything wrong in all three times. The main indicator has always been the "engine symbol w/the volt" symbol that goes on in the dashboard. The fourth time it happened (past the warranty period, now), it went away while the dealer was checking it out. Again the mechanics could not detect the source of the problem. On July 11, as I was coming home the problem again showed up. This time the dealer changed an engine part "coil" and said that the coil was the problem and these Passat cars had the same problem all the time. I am really mad because I did not expect the added expense $620 total, the time lost, the inconvenience, and the lack of respect by the dealers (these guys behave as if they are doing me a favor, I am paying dearly by choosing wv brand).

the coil pack fouled and caught the coil on fire. Had I not opened it up and removed the valve cover along with the coil pack itself, the car would have went up in flames. I feel sorry for those who dont know much about cars. This is an ongoing issue with vw coil packs. Vw claims that if they go bad you can still drive it to the dealership. I dont believe this to be a safe idea.

I received a ltr from volkswagon stating that they are experiencing problems with the ignition recoils, that could possibly cause the vehicle to lose power. So, I immediately scheduled an appointment for my vehicle. Only to find out that they are only going to replace the iginition recoils if the vehicle experiences this malfunction. My concern is that why would I want to drive a vehiclethat could possibly lose power at anytime?? evidenutally, this is a concern to volkswagon because they sent a ltr to their customers. As a customer, I am very concerned knowing my vehicle has a possible problem and the dealer(volkswagon) will not take action! why then was I even notified about the problem?.
Defect is a faulty engine coil pack. Dealer has been notified. Ph.
Failing coil pack in 2001. 5 Volkswagen Passat.
Whild driving at any speed vehicle will shut off. Ts.
Igintion coil pack failed causing a sudden decease in power as one the cylinders was not firing. This problem is extremely common and requires all four coils to be replaced. Vw is only replacing the failed coil because of a shortage of parts. There should be a recall where all four coils are replaced as the sudden loss of power may cause accidents and fatalities.
Multiple problems with the 2001 vw Passat. Problems began at 16000 miles and have continued up to the current date and mileage of 33000 miles. Car has been seen in vw service department 11 times since November 2001. Lawsuit has been filed against vw America.
While driving the check engine warning light came on, then the vehicle lost power. This almost caused an accident. The dealership indicated that one of the ignition coils had cracked and shorted out. The parts are on back order, cause this is a common problem. Ts.
Engine ignition--coil pack failure. Cold start, coil pack failed within 20 seconds of commencement of driving, nearly onto a major arterial route with morning commuter traffic. Instant loss of power, flashing mil ensued seconds later. Returned to house and called for wrecker to tow to dealer. Presently at dealer for repair. Told part would take between 2-10 days to acquire.
Possible failure of h type coil packs on 1. 8 t vw engines.
Engine light blinking accompanied by odor in vehicle and minor shaking of vehicle; owner's manual instructed not to drive vehicle due to potential problem with catalytic converter; had to be towed to dealership; told that vw was having a widespread problem with bad ignition/engine coils in all vw models 2001-2002; coils going bad one at a time and vw has refused to replace all at once despite safety issues related to breakdown (potentially on highway, in frigid temperatures, etc. ) and fact that some owners have had problem 3-4 times within several months; backorder on parts resulting in up to 4 week delays in repairs/without vehicle.
Within the first 1000 miles car was shaking heavily on startup. Had to have vehicle towed to dealership where it was not even looked at for 24hrs. Diagnosised as coil issue and was without the car for almost 1 week. 8 months later wife and daughter were driving on freeway when car shows same symptoms. Had to pull over and wait 90 min for tow truck. Diagnosised as coil #3 issue. Without the car for 10 days. Less than a month later, leaving work and going over a bridge, vehicle acted the same way again. Got the care home (barely) and then had tow truck come again. This time contacted vm customer care to try and get support for replacement of 4th coil to try and avoid a 4th bad experience. No luck, 3 representitives and 1 supervisor later, no progress. Even though 3 of the 4 have gone bad, they insist on only replacing the parts that have shown the defect. The problem with this is that it cannot be predicted and the 4th coil is of the same lot that has already gone bad. On top of all this, the first time we had this trouble, they had the nerve to put me and my family in a Geo metro as a loaner (no offense to Geo owners). With this last time, I am finally in a nicer, comparable vehicle. Vw has acknowledged the problem to me but refuses to step up and do the right thing. This a $70 part. . . $70. I would think that is worth the expense to ensure the satisfaction and safety of their customers.
2002 vw Passat, 1. 8t has been returned to dealer for defective coil. This is the second coil failure in as many months. There are a total of four coils which are in the words of vw service deaprtment to be of poor qualitity and should be replaced in total. Vw corporate refuses to allow the dealers to replace all at once but only upon failure. So numerous trips, rental cars, and out of work time is expended getting these coils replaced and waiting parts which are backorder because vw has numerous cars awaiting new coils. Read info obtained from your web site and others.
Engine coil failure in 2002 vw Passat wagon.
Consumer states while driving the vehicle the check engine light came on then without warning the vehicle cut off. Ts.
I have a new 2002 vw Passat (1. 8) in the last 18 months that I have had the car, I have had the coil sets fail on 3 occassions. The car would shake violently and the malfuntion indicator light would come on and continue blinking. I have then had to get the car towed to the dealer each time.
Engine ran very rough and check engine light flashed in the middle of the road. Also experienced significant lack of power. Car deeded to be tow to the dealership. Determined to be failed coil pack #3.
Faulty ingintion coils, two out of four have been replace on 2003 vw Passat 1. 8l t the reamining two are bound to fail, but vw will not cover the cost of replacing them. This is very concerning, given the fact that this car was bought in Dec 2002 and only has 2000 miles, and when the problem occurs the car loses power and must be towed to a dealership. Note losing power on the highway, in the middle of the coldest winter in new england is not a pleasent thought!!.
While traveling on the highway without warning, the vehicle will shut down and will not restart. Please provide additional information dealer is aware of the problem. Ts.
