Tl the contact owns a 2015 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that he was unable to insert the key into the ignition switch. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who referred the contact to the dealer. The vehicle was taken to Volkswagen of new port richey (4719 us-19, new port richey, FL 34652) where it was diagnosed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.

2 Ignition Switch problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/06/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Passat. After the vehicle was started, the steering wheel failed to maneuver without warning. In addition, the ignition key was unable to be removed from the vehicle and caused the key to fracture inside the ignition switch. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.

3 Ignition Switch problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/24/2014

Put keyfob in the ignition and it would not start. The lights in the dash illuminated but engine would not turn. Also steering lock warning lock keeps blinking. Car is stuck in park, made several attempts to have it towed, before finally having an experienced tow truck driver drag it on to a flat bed because of car being stuck in park, key fob locked in the ignition switch, has been towed to 3 different shops who have yet to pinpoint the exact problem with the car. One shop claimed it was an electrical problem and that it had something to do with the ignition switch however were unable to fix it. Has spent xxx amount of money having it towed to several shops and still not fixed. Frustrated!!!!!!.

4 Ignition Switch problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/23/2009

Failure of key (fob or what ever vw calls it) to start vehicle when inserted in ignition switch. This failure has occurred twice and resulted in ignition switch needing to be replaced by dealer. On the second occurrence the key itself shorted out and would not allow me to open power doors; however, the key would allow me to open the power rear hatch so that I could crawl through car to unlock doors. Today the other key started acting up for my wife and would not allow her to unlock doors and she had to crawl through car to unlock doors. The service manager at the dealer has the first faulty key for which he was to get us a replacement and we are waiting on vw to replace faulty key. I do not know if dealership still has faulty ignition switches but the service manager still has my key. The dates of the ignition switch replacements are 01/20/2009 & 09/09/2009. The car was in service less than 15 days before the first ignition switch needed to be replaced. I left my key with the service manager when we picked up the car on 09/13/2009.

5 Ignition Switch problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Passat

The contact owns a 1996 Volkswagen Passat. The contact started the ignition and the antilock brake system warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. While the light was illuminated, the air conditioner unit, windshield wipers, and headlights were inoperative. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and they stated that the failure was related to the electrical component in the ignition switch. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact was displeased to know that his VIN was not included in the recall, especially since the failures were identical. The recall number was unknown. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 120,000.

6 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/11/2008

Abs brakes have been pumping without inclement weather. It pumps randomly at any speed and any weather. Nothing has been resolved from the dealer. The brakes also make excessive noise, grinding or metal to metal type of sounds or contact. In addition, multiple electrical or malfunctions within the year I have owned the car- only 9491 miles. A. Air bag light went on and stayed on until I brought it to the dealer. B. The driver sun visor shorted and was inoperative. C. Ignition was weak and would not start after several times. Car would die. Brought the car to the dealer, no resolve. The computer could not duplicate problem. Finally as I am driving the other day, a malfunciton light appears and the car dies. I had the car towed to the dealer. D. After 5,000 miles check up, the service light appeared and stayed on until I brought it into the dealer to turn off. E. At this time, the car is in the dealer. They found that the ignition switch faulty and will be replacing it.

7 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

When the car is traveling approximated 2-10 mph, the automatic transmission accelerates and brakes as the automobile bucks a few times. Their is a loud thunking noise and then goes back to normal. From time to time the car gets stuck in 2nd gear, which forces me to pull over and restart the engine. Windows are supposedly automatic up and down, but don't work properly 50% of the time. Rear back speaker plays intermittently. When parking and shutting down engine, the emergency brakes turn on and off. The engine key is getting stuck in the ignition. Overall issues seem to be electrical or computer related. I have taken back to dealer twice in the last 6 moths and the problems keep building.

8 Ignition Switch problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Passat. While driving 60 mph the vehicle hesitated and there was a loss of power. He noticed smoke coming from the hood. Approximately five minutes later he noticed fire in the engine compartment. The dealer has not been inspected the vehicle to determine the cause of the fire. There is a defect investigation open for the ignition switch (NHTSA action # pe07024). The fire destroyed the vehicle. There is a police report available. The failure and current mileages were 80,000.

9 Ignition Switch problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/26/2007

The ignition switch on my 1996 vw Passat went out while driving at night, which shut down the headlights. This is exactly the same as described in NHTSA campaign id number : 02v256000 I was informed by vw customer service this recall didn't apply to my VIN#, despite it being a 1996 Passat. I think it should.

10 Ignition Switch problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Passat

Various electronic components failed while driving--windshield wipers, lights, defrost motor--on a very dark, rainy morning, causing a dangerous situation and a near-accident. Manufacturer previously warned of 'ignition switch failure', but would only repair after failure and before 10 yrs or 100,000 miles. My car has 100,600 miles. Manufacturer refuses to bear the repair cost for this known defect that could have caused a serious accident.

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the push key becomes stuck and the gears must be shifted in order to correct the failure. Also, the emergency brake failed to operate properly, and the vehicle's interior smelled like rotten eggs. On April 9, 2007 the vehicle was brought to a dealer for a diagnosis. The current mileage was, 10,000 and failure mileage was 9,000.

Consumer complained about ignition switch and headlights problems. While driving on a winding road the headlights just turned off, and consumer would have to wiggle the ignition to get the lights to turn back on. Currently, manufacturer was recalling vehicles with this defect. However, because this vehicle had an excess of 125,000 miles it was 25,000 miles past the cut off point. Also, headlights will sometimes go out while driving. Dealer replaced ignition switch. Consumer felt that this problem should be a definitive recall without mileage limitations.

On certain passenger vehicles, the electrical portion of the ignition switch assembly can fail, causing the headlights and windshield wipers to become inoperative. Dearship indicated to consumer sorry this vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.

My 1996 vw Passat has an ignition switch is faulty. My first time was at night and my lights went out. I pulled of the road and restarted the car and the lights came on. The next time the lights went out and the wipers stop. I hit every switch and when I hit the ignition switch everything care on. I called dealer and he said my VIN was not covered under the recall. If my car is having the same problems as the recall why can't this be covered by the safety recall?.

The first time the switch was replaced it was free of charge and now that it has failed again the dealer doesn't want to replace the ignition switch under the recall again because they stated the vehicle was more than 8 years old.

Further reairs by an independant mechanic worked for a short time, then one of the lights went out again. This has been ongoing for over a year. Dealership completely uninterested.

While driving the malfunction light came on and stayed on. In the owner manual it states when this light comes on don't drive vehicle. Consumer took vehicle to the dealership to have service. The dealership indicated theirs a problem with the ignition switch coil, and it needs to be replace. This is a common problem per dealership. Ts.

Lights, wipers and heater fan lose power while driving. The ignition switch was replaced by the dealer at the owner's expense, fixing the problem. The ignition switch part number as listed on the invoice (6no-905-865) is similar, if not identical, to part number 357-905-865 that fails in the 1996 vw Passat & jetta, a vehicle subject to a recall campaign for the same symptoms.
