10 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/04/2011

I was driving on the highway in my 1996 vw Passat at 65 mph and the entire inside of my car was engulfed with water and anti freeze steam and vapor. It was quickly and with out warning impossible to see through the windshield. The probable cause of the problem is a defective heater core. This is a very serious safety issue and could have lead to a major accident resulting in injury or death.

12 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/20/2010

My 2004 Volkswagen Passat is part of the "vw oil sludge settlement". I have done all scheduled oil changes, maintenance, etc. I have all receipts. I had to replace the engine coils, the underbody heat, etc. Nov. 20th 2010 I took the car in because a performance light related to the engine came on. I did not know at the time the warranty of the vehicle had been extended. I had to pay $ 654. 11 for repairs and spent 4. 5 hours at the dealer, vw south service, waiting for my car. Now, I have to take it back in for the same light coming on as in November. I have 2 years to pay for the car approximately $ 8000. 00. A car that is known has major issues with oil sludge and the engine. I cannot afford to continue to pay Volkswagen for a car that is going to give me headaches in the next 2 years, a lemon. And will continuously cause me to miss work. I have the settlement letter and a file with all receipts. VIN# wvwpd63b84p152043 - 2004 Passat GLS 1. 8t.

13 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/12/2010

Heater core failed while driving, blowing hot steam out of the vents, dumping hot coolant onto my feet and fogging up the windshield instantly.

14 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/12/2010

The owner's manual states that the engine coolant is not to be replaced. However, I now have a heater core that is clogged and that causes no heat in the passenger compartment of the car. The instructions given to consumers in the Volkswagen owner's manual is in error and leads to expensive repair costs.

15 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

At 60,025 miles and traveling at 65mph my 2005 vw Passat lost power and began to sputter. I was barely able to make it to a repair shop where I was told the ignition coils needed to be replaced at a cost of $500+.

16 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

Purchased a used 2004 vw Passat in April 09. Did not purchase an extended warranty for the vehicle, however, such would not have covered this issue regardless. The Passat heating/air conditioning system is a climatronic. The vents and airconditioning operated as they should. After purchase, noticed on cool mornings that vehicles heat ws not operating correctly necessary for defrosting/defogging windshield and windows. Took vehicle back to dealership and requested diagnostic. Diagnostic was no flow through heater core and recommendation was replacement of heater core in order to receive heat. No indication of any posed danger or threat was indicated by dealership as to this issue. Three months after the diagnosis, having operated the vehicle with no heat for 6 months, the vehicle has now begun to leak massive amounts of antifreeze/coolant, however, the coolant is not leaking out of the car, I cannot see any coolant or very little coolant anywhere underneath, therefore I can only assume that the antifreeze is leaking into the vehicle, possibly posing a fire hazard and risk of being burned should the pressure of the coolant system become to great and the volume of antifreeze in my vehicle is unknown. I am not operating the vehicle at this time. I contacted vw customer care and informed them of this problem, the indicated my vehicle is too old and has too many miles on it for any goodwill replacement. However, there was a recall on vw jettas for a similar issue with the heater core.

17 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/28/2009

I was driving on the highway with my 2 years old son, and out of no where the car stop and as soon as stop one of the message from my car was stop cooling engine, that was the four time that light appears on my car, I been talking the car to the mechanic for that problem but they told me it is a defect I already spent more than $3,000. 00 on my car and is not working, my car is a wv Passat 2005.

18 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

21 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/23/2009

20 after I purchased my car at carmax in laurel, MD in June 2009 I had to take it back because my ac was blowing hot air, after a diagnosis carmax sent my car to a fitzgerald Volkswagen dealership in annapolis, MD where they diagnosed it for the same problem and in turn had to replace my ac compressor, condensor and clutch. I ran the ac for approximately 2 months (July & Aug 2009) that year, since we were already half way through the summer. In may 2010 when I turned my on again it blew hot air, I sent it back to carmax who diagnosed it again and said the ac compressor and pressure switch should be replace, less than a year since the initial ac was replaced the first time. At this point, I called fitzgerald and was told I was past my 12,000 miles per the replacement warranty and that I would have to pay for the work which was qouted at $2300 and $1700. After I complained to the attorney general office, the dealer offered a good will one time offer decreasing the estimated cost to $900. I declined the offer since I don't believe I should have to pay for something that clearly was not done correctly the first time. After purchasing an extended warranty for another issue, I took the car back to the dealer, they diagnosed with the same problem I agreed to have them fix it based on my warranty coverage however, I was denied coverage by the warranty company because Volkswagen previously issued a TSB regarding ac issues in 2006 vw Passat. This TSB was issued in 2007, my car was purchased in 2009. So as of today 7/20/2011 I am still without a working ac system and I am currently driving around in heat adviosry weather with no ac. I am forced to make alternate arrangements for transportation as a result, since the excessive heat exposure causes me headaches & dizziness.

23 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/18/2009

2005 vw Passat tdi heater core failure, a common vw recall problem.

24 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

I own a 2002 vw Passat and I am the original owner. I have no heat and the dealer has told me that I need a new heater core which appears to be a known problem w/ vw's that they have yet to acknowledge. The dealer said they would not cover under warranty but suggested I call vwoa and see if I could get it covered under goodwill. I called vwoa and stated my case and requested that they cover it under goodwill and they refused. My car has been regularly maintained by the dealer and I am very upset that vw has a known problem and refuses to correct it and they expect me to pay $1000 to have this known problem fixed.

25 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/28/2008

We have a 2002 and a 2004 Volkswagen Passat sedan and wagon. Both have suffered motor mount leakage and both have broken water pump dispellers. We have replaced the water pump parts and are saving up to replace mounts on both vehicles. This seems to be a weak part for Volkswagen. We are constantly going to get something fixed which is not a typical repair for automobiles from other companies.

26 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

Incident description = 2004 vw Passat had been previously report several fuel consumptions problems at hoy fox vw and gas ended up leaking out of fuel tank and cause a spill in my garage and drive. Hazard was inhalation gas in a closed in area caused head aches/ nausea/dizziness/ for my family and I I have had mutiple problems with vehicle since then has broke down on me twice in less than 1 day's time. On 01 Sep 08 my wife noticed and oil spot in driveway after I left to go out of town granted we have brand new home and the vw was only vehicle parked in that spot she could reach me because no service with my cell phone but I ended up broke down outside big spring ,TX the care was sluggish and leaking oil this time and on 03 sep08 in /texarkana after being in shop allday 2sep08 it broke down for a previous condition with ignition coils. Hoy foxvw not admitting that may have put the new oil filter to tight to cause to breakdown after having the oil change on 28aug08/29aug08 for other neglected maintenance. Please look into this matter I'm sure it's not just my vehicle they trying to assume because it just had went out warranty. The engine oil cooler was damaged and bursted when put on at hoy-fox vw by a vw technician after putting the oil filter on entirely to tight. Leaked in yard and I was not aware of it and the spilled out all over the ground at a high temperature vehicle (overheated) which make it hard for me stop while drive because of the slickness of mixture between the coolant and oil. Almost ran off the road but ended up shifting to neutral and letting coast over to median.

27 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/27/2008

We had few failures on vw 2007 Passat wagon; first was a recall on one of the software parts (approx 28 000 miles); then ac pipe system recall; then we had an oil leak (37 000 miles-no damage or warnings prior to that)-dealership fixed it without much explanation; laud noise from the engine- gasket on one of the vales in the engine failed (45 000 miles)-no prior warnings-fixed without much explanation from the dealership except that if we keep driving? car will use more gas then usual. . .

28 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/08/2008

The heater core tubing in the car disintegrated at about 18,000 miles. This resulted in the check engine light appearing, coolant leaking into other parts of the engine department, and the fumes from the coolant in the passenger compartment. At this time the vehicle was under warranty, so I took it to the Volkswagen dealership. They replaced the purge valve (about an hours work) and returned the car to me. I took the car back two more times for the same problem before the warranty ran out and the dealership performed the same service. The coolant leak became significantly worse (I began adding coolant every 3-4 days) at around 82,000 miles and the fumes from the coolant in the passenger compartment became very strong. I took the car to another repair shop and the mechanic discovered that the tubing from the heater core had completely disintegrated and the heater core needed to be replaced altogether. I have seasonal asthma associated with allergies and inhaling the fumes from the coolant has made the condition worse. I am currently having the vehicle repaired at a cost of approximately $1200.

29 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/21/2008

A/c was not cooling as normal then the a/c was not cooling at all. The day the a/c system failed I was driving on the highway at the speed of 70 miles per hour and it was raining heavily. All windows to the vehicle fogged to the point where I had no visibility. I pulled over to the emergency lane. I had to wait for the storm to pass to open my windows and be able to see through all windows. I drove the car home and made an appointment with a vw service shop the next day. The shop checked the a/c system for refrigerant and found that it was contaminated. They vacuum/drained the system, refilled it with new refrigerant, and replaced the temperature sensor for the a/c system. The a/c was working as normal for two months then without warning my a/c system was not cooling at all. I took it back the next day to vw service. They found that the a/c compressor shaft was seized to the compressor housing. To repair it they had to replace the compressor, expansion valve, and condenser. They also cleaned to a/c lines, vacuumed the system and refilled it with refrigerant after putting all the parts together. I was without a vehicle for a week. Till this day my a/c system is not working properly. For example, I drive the car one day, the a/c works and normal, and the next day it does not cool at all. It works at random times. To add, the same time my a/c was broken my air bag warning light came on. Vw checked it and found that the front passenger side igniter had too much resistance. To fix it they removed the front passenger seat and bypassed the front passenger side airbag plug. Then they checked the seat harness and reinstalled the seat. My air bag warning light is on again. Moreover, the sunvisors lights didn't work, shift knob was corroded, the rubber seal to the satellite antenna rotted away, and both tail lights on the interior started to burn and look melted. All was replaced under warranty. Good for that because I couldn't have been able to pay for all the repair costs.

30 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/28/2007

On 12/28/2007 the oil cooler on my 2004 Passat failed and allowed large quantities of oil to leak into the coolant. The oil cooler repair was covered under vw's powertrain warranty. Per the Passat owner's manual and per verbal confirmation from vw, when a part covered under warranty fails and causes damage to other parts, those other parts are covered under warranty as well. In this case the dealer, flow Volkswagen of greensboro, nc, replaced not only the oil cooler but also the coolant reservoir, and flushed the cooling system 3 times. During the service they telephoned me at work and gave me a quote of nearly $300 to replace the thermostat because they felt it could have been damaged by the fouled coolant. At that time I was not aware that the thermostat was covered under warranty, nor did I know that the dealer already had the thermostat completely out of the vehicle. The dealers service technician noted that the coolant was the consistency of mud. The $300 quote that the flow Volkswagen dealer gave me involved a double charge on the labor as well as violated vw's warranty policy that the thermostat should have been covered. The dealer was already going to charge vw for the removal of the thermostat and other cooling system components, yet they were calling to ask me to pay for the labor as well as for the warranty covered part itself (the thermostat) that was damaged by the oil cooler's leak. During the phone call when I was given the quote the flow Volkswagen service personnel told me that the thermostat might be okay since they were cleaning it. In August of 2008, the Passat's check engine light came on. According to flow Volkswagen this time, the thermostat needed to be replaced and the total charge would be $478.

31 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/11/2007

I have a 2001 Volkswagen Passat and the check oil pressure stop engine light came on yesterday. The oil level is fine. We had an oil change the day before. The car had to be towed to the Volkswagen dealership. This comes three months after we had to send it to Volkswagen to have a cooling problem worked on which cost over 3,000. They were told to fix anything that was wrong with the car.

32 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/20/2006

As I drove home from work, the vehicle's temperature gauge suddenly shot into the red and warnings flashed on the dash to stop the car immediately. I pulled over at the first highway exit and parked at a Volkswagen repair shop. The mechanics diagnosed the problem as a broken water pump impellar, essentially a small fan-like device that keeps coolant moving through the engine. The mechanics explained that this model vw used a plastic impellar instead of the metal ones commonly used in most cars. Apparently, vw has recognized that this plastic part is failure prone, and now makes aluminum replacement impellars. But the mechanics said I wasn't entitled to any recall or warranty. The repair cost me $879, plus the costs of renting a replacement car. Updated 12-12-07. Updated.

33 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/11/2006

Radio not functioning, air conditioning unit works intermittently, airbag malfunction recognized, operation unit in steering wheel malfunctions, no communications with brake control unit, brake light switch causes drivers side brake light to malfunction. Horn not functioning nearly caused 2 accidents within a month. I drove over an island to avoid one collision from the other non-attentive driver and ended up scraping the transmission pan. Cost of replacement: $550. After thousands of dollars in repairs and diagnostics, vw dealerships still unable to fix any of the above!.

34 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/17/2006

Purchased 2001 Passat in may, 2005. Had same 'non-covered' oil pump problem as many on the list have. Last month, noticed a pool of oil on the garage floor after backing it out. Looked under the hood, noticed that the antifreeze overflow looked like a chocolate milkshake. Oil cooler and oil cooler seals had to be replaced. 76000 miles.

35 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/15/2006

Water pump failed on freeway, unable to drive vehicle.
