1 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/22/2020

My 16 bought a car from bommarito vw hazelwood, they told us it had prior engine work and the customer couldn't pay for the charges so they sold us the car. When test driving we heard a clunk every time you would excel. The salesman said it was stuff in the trunk. Come to find out there are no motor mounts holding the motor and the motor goes up in the air when you give the car gas, the motor hit the exhaust and broke it. There is no way this car passed inspection with a motor hanging there, you can't see through the back window because the tint is so bad. A dealership should not of sold a vehicle with a motor like this, it's a bit dangerous to put a young girl in. It has taken me two weeks for someone to call me back.

2 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/21/2019

Twice while driving, the fuel delivery system failed leaving the automobile disabled on the highway. On both occasions it was reported that metal was found in the fuel pump and all components of the fuel system were replaced. The two incidents happened within the first year of ownership after the car was taken out of storage for the exhaust/ emissions recall. The first occurrence was within 2 months and within 2000 miles. The second was shortly after the first 10,000 mile service and within 9 months from the first.

3 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/06/2018

The weld beads on the down pipe flange adjacent to the turbo charger failed and resulted in a huge exhaust leak. The heat (coming out from the opening) got trapped in the engine bay and melted the vacuum hose connected with the brake booster. As a result, power decreased but most importantly, breaking power was lost as well. This happened when the vehicle was in motion. Luckily, I was not driving fast and just exited the highway. Very dangerous and the defect on this model is actually not uncommon. Low quality factory welds on the components should be re-welded and the cheap hard plastic hoses should be replaced with better quality and more reliable hoses.

4 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/16/2016

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. While driving various speeds, the contact experienced extreme headaches and nausea continuously. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was driven to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle leaked carbon monoxide. The dealer replaced a hose, but the issue recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

2004 Volkswagen Passat with 117000 miles on this car with 1. 8 turbo, stop oil pressure low, took to a local mechanic and oil sludge was detected, was cleaned and started running normally again but emitted a white smoke that smelled from exhaust. Two weeks later stop oil pressure low on car again took to another mechanic and oil sludge build up again. Another 500. 00 and this was yet again cleaned and white smoke still coming from exhaust. Was told that if the turbo is going out that the oil sludge will continue to build up and that it needs to be replaced.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/14/2011

There are 3 complaints. I have purchased 2 Volkswagen Passats in 2009. One is working fine except windshield tank leak, and the other one has the leakage and at the same time an engine problem. I would like to recall the other one of which I have registered with vehicle id here followed by the below reasons and requests. 1. Windshield tank leakage since there was no accident and it naturally leaked. 2. On the 17th of November 2011, the car suddenly stopped and exhaled black smoke and I could not drive any more. I definitely stopped and called a wreck car and went directly to the dealer. The dealer reported as steering column module problem. (also mentioned about injector ) 3. On the 14th of September 2012, I was on my way to work and quite far away from the company, the car suddenly stopped with the same problem as 2011. I was late for work for sure and it was almost life threatening circumstance because of the environment. I called the wreck car and here is another report from the dealer. "customer states vehicle was driving rough, shaking and emitting smoke excessively: smelled of fuel: made it to the dealership and will not start. Check and advise. Inspected vehicle retrieved p0300 random misfire p0303 cylinder #3 misfire and p0087 for fuel rail. Noticed large amounts of white smoke coming from exhaust and strong odor of fuel. . . )" 4. I have power train warranty for 5 years or 60k mile (which will be the first) and the dealer fixed 2 times for free because of the warranty. Now even the warranty is being terminated and I have no other ways to secure my safety. Followed by the above reasons, I will not be able to drive this car which I have purchased in 2009. When I drive this car, I do not feel safe and even feel life threatening danger while I am driving because those moments in the past were very dangerous.

9 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/05/2011

Owner drove the 2003 Volkswagen Passat (2. 8 v6 engine) home and parked it. He came back out to the driveway approximately 2 hours later and found the vehicle smoking. Small fire at right front floor pan/minor melting of dash plastics caused by heat from right side exhaust pipe/catalytic converter. Heat shield melted, rubber body plug ignited and consumed, carpet just above body plug was charred. Car just had right side catalytic converter and pipe replaced.

11 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/20/2010

I have a 2006 vw Passat that had a crankcase breather valve foul up for no reason. The vehicle was maintained in accordance with the vw recommended maintenance schedule and this is documented, however, the vw service rep indicated this was a result of not properly maintaining the vehicle. Specifically he stated that this is what happens when the owner fails to change the engine oil. (note: vw recommends changing the oil every 10k miles and calls for the use of synthetic oil. Both recommendations were followed in this case). This incident occurred when the vehicle had approximately 48,000 miles on the vehicle. The vehicle was driven under "normal driving conditions"--primarily highway driving in a non snow, non desert environment. As a result of this defect, there was an increase in emissions. Also, the engine began to seize up while I was traveling on an interstate highway thus putting me and my family in danger.

12 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

Catalytic converter heat caused fabric material behind silver reflective liner on passenger side to catch and hold a smolder and flame causing damage to the structural body panels and melting some plastic components. Fire was extinguished by using a chemical fire extinguisher and remaining smoldering components had to be extinguished as exposed manually. Caused grass to catch fire and left smoky residue.

13 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/30/2010

Started vehicle in normal fasion, noticed large amount of vibration from engine compartment, check engine light came on. Upon acceleration, vehicle hesitates drasticaly. Took to vw service center and they ran diagnostics. 3 fault codes - po300 multiple cylinder misfire detected, po304 cylinder 4 misfire detected, p3073 throttle transfer pump electrical malfunction in circuit. Vw service center swapped ignition coils and plugs - duplicated faults. They wanted to put in new injectors, exhaust lifters, exhaust rockers and fuel pump control module for $1800. 00 - and since they were already in there, they wanted to replace timing belt, tensioner, and water pump for another $340. 00 I was told that if I don't mind the bad performance/hesitation then it won't hurt the engine any more then it already is. This is a 2006 vw Passat 2. 0t lux with 80,000 miles. Crazy that all these problem occur just after the 75,000 wanantee was up.

14 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/06/2009

Vw issued a voluntary safety recall for replacement of the underbody heat shield on my 2003 Passat wagon. (open campaign: 26e5/r5). I took the car to the local dealer to address the recall but was told my car could not be serviced without potential damage to the flexible joints behind the catalytic converter. Both joints were said to have small fractures in the metal and braided steel. I was told that the heat shield replacement required the exhaust line to be dropped via the flexible joints and that they could be broken in the process. If damage to the joints occurred, the charge for the parts (excluding labor) would be $1500 and that the full bill for parts/labor would be my responsibility. Because of the excessive cost, I was not able to have the heat shields replaced. I am concerned about the potential safety hazard for continued use of the vehicle without addressing the recall. I would like Volkswagen to be responsible for the full cost of replacing the heat shield up to and including the replacement of the flexible joints, should that be necessary.

15 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/02/2009

Heat shield was replaced in a recall during the summer of 2008. A couple days after the repair we complained of a fire smell, returned the vehicle to the local dealer. At the time they said they replaced the heat shield again and the smell would eventually go away. A year later, the we experienced an engine compartment fire. The car was towed to the dealer that did the recall work. After inspection they admitted to us that the recall work was performed, however the heat shield was installed incorrectly, which caused it to catch fire. They explained that the instructions they were supplied by vw were unclear. They also admitted that they have no way of knowing how many heat shields were installed incorrectly at their dealership before they received the corrected or more clear installation instructions. I am concerned that there may have been many more dealerships with the same problem. If nothing else, the local dealership should be ordered to send out a letter notifying their recall customers of the potential problem.

16 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/15/2009

Exhaust pipe broke at the flex pipe. Hot exhaust gas burned through the wiring of the electronic steering rack. Lost steering and then engine shut off completely and not able to be restarted. Exhaust pipe, steering rack & steering wiring was replaced (wiring needs a heat-shield to protect the wiring).

17 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/16/2009

Dealer refuses to fix recall unless I accept responsibility for any damage to aftermarket parts occurring while replacing heat shield on exhaust system. There is a potential for fire if original heat shield is not replaced. Recall r5, criteria 1.

18 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/21/2009

19 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/12/2009

Vehicle Passat 2004. 1. 8 wagon. With 62000 miles on it, problem as follow , steam came off ventilations when heaters is activated, fogging windshield and windows, the smell is so strong odor of antifreeze filling the whole cabin and causing nausea and headaches to whoever is in the car when car is been driving, according to the dealers repair person the heater core is leaking and need to be replaced at the dealer only at cost of $1600. 00 thee part is not a moving part that is easy accessible and that needs regular maintenance, this is a part that came defective from factory and vw does not want to repair not acknowledge that this part came defective from the manufacture. And should be fixed by them ,that is a problem that is a hazard to the driver, and passenger health due to the toxic fumes that emanated throughout the vents from the heater core leakage and entering the inside of the cabin, it should be recalled to fix this very problem that may cause people develop any type of lung cancer inhaling this fumes. On top of the described problem this car has been in repair for bad water pump, bad heating sensor, bad thermostat, broken cv boots at 50200 miles, bad battery, warning sensor lights. 21 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/14/2008

There were no events that led up to the failure. Basically the catalytic converter busted at a flange seam where it bolts to the motor. This further caused my brakes to fail after hot exhaust blew on the brake vacuum tube for the brakes. Unfortunately, neither Volkswagen or the dealer where I purchased the vehicle are willing to be of any assistance, since it is 8,000 miles over the warranty even though the car is only 2 years old. Supposedly the dealership ordered the part 10 days ago, and it still has not arrived. The irony of this is that when I asked the dealership if they would return the defective part to me, they said no because they want to return it to the manufacturer for a warranty exchange!.

22 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/08/2008

The heater core tubing in the car disintegrated at about 18,000 miles. This resulted in the check engine light appearing, coolant leaking into other parts of the engine department, and the fumes from the coolant in the passenger compartment. At this time the vehicle was under warranty, so I took it to the Volkswagen dealership. They replaced the purge valve (about an hours work) and returned the car to me. I took the car back two more times for the same problem before the warranty ran out and the dealership performed the same service. The coolant leak became significantly worse (I began adding coolant every 3-4 days) at around 82,000 miles and the fumes from the coolant in the passenger compartment became very strong. I took the car to another repair shop and the mechanic discovered that the tubing from the heater core had completely disintegrated and the heater core needed to be replaced altogether. I have seasonal asthma associated with allergies and inhaling the fumes from the coolant has made the condition worse. I am currently having the vehicle repaired at a cost of approximately $1200.

23 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/06/2008

I was driving about 55 on the highway when I saw smoke coming out of my vents I stop and open the hood and notice my car had caught on fire from the left bottom side.

25 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/17/2008

About a year ago our new 2006 vw Passat 2. 0t started to have very hard shift when downshifting when car slowing down. Then the car engine started to hesitate and accelerated by itself until cal was undrivable. Dealer fixed the card in two weeks. Today a year later the car had the same issue, hard shifting when slowing down and engine hesitation accelerating by itself. Car undrivable.

26 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/08/2008

I was pulling out of my apartments when my car lost all horse power and pretty much sputtered then died; I was left exposed to traffic on a busy road. Then, I was towed to the vw dealership where I was told that my ignition coils failed and that in turn ruined my oxygen sensor and catalytic converter. All these had to be replaced by vw at my cost. The mechanic told me when I was being towed there he already knew what it was because they go out all the time. Doing further research it seems many people have the same problem.

27 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

28 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/26/2007

My 2003 vw Passat gl sedan sputtered, stalled and subsequently caught fire in the engine compartment around 6:30 pm, Jan 26th, 2007, in holmdel NJ, police report # 07-1914 holmdel police dept. The car has been maintained well by a local vw dealer since purchase and there has been no modifications made, nor any signs of trouble prior to the incident. The fire was very extensive and put out by holmdel NJ fire dept and the car is totaled. The symptom just prior to stalling is consistent with ignition coil failure which was recalled by vw until 2002 model year, I. E. , engine warning lights, sputtering, smokes under hood and though exhaust and final stall. The engine stall nearly caused collision due to the loss of steering boost and the fire was rapid and large. Thus, I fear a less fortunate combination of circumstance may lead to injury or worse to other passengers of cars with vw/Audi 1. 8t engines such as Passat, zeta, a4, golf, etc. .

29 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

: the contact stated the vehicle was parked for over an hour, when the heat shield on the top of the exhaust system began to smolder. No indicator lamp illuminated prior to the problem. The fire department was notified and came, although no flames erupted. The fire department could not determine the cause of the smoke. However, an independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and discovered the cause of the smoke was the heat shield.

32 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/17/2005

Owner had the catalytic converters and oxygen sensors replaced. A few weeks later, owner was driving the vehicle and then stopped and was sitting in her driveway using her cell phone when she smelled smoke.
