Owner was driving the vehicle, parked it, turned off the engine, and went inside a restaurant to pick up a pizza. While owner was inside, the Volkswagen caught fire. Fire burned carpet in front center of passenger compartment, plastics in front center of dash. All damage above location of exhaust and catalytic converter underneath the floor.

Owner was driving when someone on the side of the road pointed and indicated there was something coming out of her vehicle that looked like fog. Smoke was then noticed and her husband got out of the vehicle, looked underneath, and saw fire. He began throwing snow on the vehicle. Fd extinguished fire. Subsequent examination revealed the exhaust system overheated and ignited the fire due to an engine management problem - spark plugs showed overly rich fuel/air mixture.

I have a 1999 Passat wagon (@ 84,000 mile) and have had a buring oil smell for the past 18 months (it started @ 60,00 mile). It has been to a few dealers numerous times and all they ever to is replace gaskets. They have also replaced turbo charger, mas air flow, and every possible gasket. We have even had the vw rep into help solve the problem. They worked on it - said they found other gaskets - but it still burns. It is worse when it sits idle and does not happen wheh the ac is on. I just got it back from the delaer two days ago and the smell is still there - of course on their invoice they claim the smell is gone. They are such liars and all the serivce people know how to do is replace parts. I have decided to access the lemon law.

Owner was driving the Volkswagen and smelled a weird odor, so he pulled over to the side of the road. He opened the hood and looked toward the back of the engine and observed smoke and smelled something burning. He stated he observed fire from the bottom part of a wire harness. A subsequent examination revealed the spark plugs showed a slightly rich fuel/air mixture in the cylinders, resulting in possible overheated exhaust components. Cause of fire undetermined.
Air flow meter O2 sensor.

Vehicle check engine light and emissions workshop indicator have been coming on 2-3 minutes after start up. Vehicle taken in for 40,000 mile service and check engine light diagnostic. Visit # 1) replaced oxygen sensor on emissions system. Check engine light back on next day. Visit # 2)reset check engine light. Check engine light back on next day. Scheduled appointment for full diagnostic next week. Visit #3) replaced vacuum lines, thought 40,000 mile service was stressing older parts. Check engine light on next day. Visit # 4) reset check engine light. Check engine light on next day. Scheduled another full diagnostic. Visit # 5) ordered and replaced secondary air pump, left vehicle overnight. Check engine light on at pick up. No alternate transportation available, agreed to return vehicle next day. Visit # 6) replaced relay for secondary air pump. Plan to return vehicle to me after 3 more days. Hoping 6th repair attempt is successful (11/22/02) dt.
The leak detection pump is part of the evaporative emissions control on this car. Within 2 days of buying it, the check engine light came on. Dealer diagnosed and replaced the pump but light came back on next day. Same pump replaced again. Search on internet and discussion w/dealer indicates this part (made by siemens) is a common failure and warranty only 24,000 miles. Cost was $275 for me to have fixed. If new ones commonly fail and this is emissions related, shouldn't there be a recall? is this the right place to report this? nlm.
Secondary air injection pump used for ignition has failed. When starting vehicle it makes a loud wining noise. Hard part replaced 3 times, but problem reoccurred.
Purchased car in late Dec, 2001. Have taken car in for repair on 1/12/02 and 1/16/02 for it emitting excess, raw fuel through exhaust system. Have been waiting 7. 5 weeks for the repair to be made. Was told by service manager that they're having same problem.

Emissions workshop light comes on, then engine check lamp shows on dash. Dealer replaced air pump, said that a hose was loose and never found the problem. Vw of America was contacted along with the customer service rep at the dealer. We had to trade the car becauce the problem could not be repaired. I have not contacted an attorney at this time. Why is vw allowed to sell cars that they cannot repair? I would like to be compensated for our financial loss as well as for our time and trouble.
Check engine light keeps coming on along with emissions workshop lights; gas tank, vacumn pump and sensors all replaced but still this problem continues.
Exhaust system failed intermittantly causing loudness and vibration, making car undrivable and to fail state inspection.

The car blows smoke so bad I cannot keep the windows open. I have the dealer get the car past emissions because it fails every time. This not only effects myself but every person in the area that I happen to be passing through. The dealer says this is normal. This is not normal for even a diesel. This is a health problem. A raw fuel smell is also present, there are no visible leaks.
Consumer states exhaust system has excessive noise when accelerating.
Every Passat owner I have talked to (5) indicated this part had failed. Recall? no safety defect listed.
