1. /2. On a hot day (90 +/-) and the engine is in idle (normal around 650 rpm) unexpectedly the revs go over 1000 rpm. To keep the car stoped the foot brake pressure must be increased by the driver. This is quite hard to time because the problem does not occur at every stop/idle. It looks like that this occures more often with the a/c on. 3. So far I did nothing but I read that other vw Passat 2006 vr6 owners have the same issue. I will make a service and ask my dealer if he is aware of this problem next week.

I had a 2002 vw Passat with 1. 8t engine. Its original engine was dead due to oil sludge 3 years ago; and its replaced engine was dead today again. I think Volkswagen should pay back my money, about $6000, for replacing 2 engines; and recall this engine immediately.

1. Started hearing "ticking" noise from engine 2. "ticking" became louder, slow performance 3. Replaced intake cam / lifters, h. P. Fuel pump, valve cover gasket and sealant, vacuum pipe to leak detection pipe (all 2 times each).
When braking or idol, my 2006 vw Passat will have an engine surge that amounts to a sudden increase in rpm. This will make the car difficult to brake and has almost resulted in a accident numerous times. The car will continue to idol at this higher rpm until you begin driving again and the problem will likely occur at the next traffic light. It is very difficult to hold down the brake pedal under this increased engine speed and makes it difficult to bring the car to a stop. My wife struggles to keep the car stopped for 3 minutes at a traffic light because of the high amounts of force required to keep the brake pedal down and the car stopped. The problem seems to be extremely frequent when under hot temperatures or when the ac is being run. This has been ongoing for years but they have been unable to fix it. There are other reports of this happening from other drivers. I have taken it to a dealer 4 times to try to resolve the issue. They acknowledge the issue and can easily repeat it but have been unable to fix it. This car is now dangerous to drive, especially for my wife. Please help resolve this issue. Thanks.
In the last couple years my 2000 vw Passat has a burning smell like a fire in the engine after driving a bit (I've noticed this particularly when the heater is on), has hesitated and jumped when I've tried to shift gears and accelerate, and a while ago the "check engine" light was going on when this hesitation occurred; although this light hasn't come on in the same situation lately, and the hesitation itself doesn't seem to be occurring as much as before. At any rate, I still get the burning smell and recently read that there is an investigation on this very make and model by NHTSA for said problems. My mechanic has been saying all along there is no problem, but perhaps he doesn't know of this investigation. What should I do?.

I have a 2002 vw Passat. I had numerous problems with it since I bought it, the control arms go, the engine coils fail constantly and just recently my low oil pressure light came on. I had my car towed to the place where I purchased it and they said this means that my engine is shot. I have done some research and tried to look for used parts and it turns out that with the 1. 8l turbo Passat engine this occurs very frequently. Now I am stuck paying almost $11,000 for a car that I cant even drive because it is going to cost me nearly $5,000 to fix. I really would like this problem to be looked into and I am highly surprised that this has not been a recall issue yet.

While driving the engine lamp came on and the test message indicated "emission workshop". The dealership found the mass air flow meter (p0101) to be faulty. It was replace but the problem and code recurred within 6 miles. Next the dealership found a crack in the turbo air cooler, it was replaced but the problem and code recurred within miles. The dealership has had the car for nearly 2 weeks when they found a slight air leak in a turbo hose. The "o" rings were replaced and it may have corrected the problem but I have not had the car since they are still working on the engine surge problem.

I was driving my 2002 Passat 1. 8t for a approximately 30, reaching my house the car started sputtering and acting weird. Once I parked in my driveway and open the hood the engine was on fire for no apparent reason. The car was running perfectly fine for the first 30 minutes and then was on fire.
2006 vw Passat 3. 6 l in shop for two weeks now with seized motor at just over 64k miles - oil light alarm came on suddenly at 70mph . . . . Immediately stopped vehicle and had roadside assistance tow to vw dealer. . . Been there ever since. . . Still waiting for vw to decide what they are going to do for me. . .
Apparent engine oil sludge problem. The oil light came on with a warning to stop the engine. The car is currently in the shop awaiting evaluation of the extent damage. I purchased the car used and have no record of the previous owners maintenance. I maintain my own vehicle therefore do not have receipts to prove each oil change according to the schedule. Vw recommends changes every 5,000 miles; I changed it every 3,000.

When a $2 o ring in oil filter housing fails, oil is quickly pumped from the engine. . Mechanic says this is a common problem with the 1. 8 liter turbo. Daughter was driving when the oil light finally came on. In less that 5 miles engine damage started. Cam shaft is scored.

Oil sludge developed in the engine of my 2004 vw Passat wagon 1. 8t, causing excess engine wear and $2800 service charge to desludge the engine. The sludge was caused by a problem known to vw but not made known to vehicle owners. I would like vw to reimburse me for the cost of this service. At a minimum, I would like vw to notify all customers of this defect (including warranty coverage requirements) and provide periodic sludge checks, every one to two years.
My wife was driving the vehicle and heard a pop from under the car. She pulled over right away and saw fluids and smoke coming from the engine compartment. Within five minutes the engine and passenger compartments were fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle was considered totaled. Volkswagen is blaming it on an after market stereo power cable and an investigator with 23 years of experience said oil lines ruptured and the fire initially ignited low in the engine compartment -- not on top by the stereo power lead. . My oil pressure light came on. I was driving on a mountain, and there was no where to pull over, so I had to keep driving. The engine locked up and the car lost power. I was able to steer it off onto a shoulder. I have also been burned my the heated seat when the wiring overheats, and it has both shocked and burned my skin.
After hitting 100,000 miles on 2004 Passat, the warning light came on for low oil pressure. I took it in to vw and they quoted me $2,800 to replace all oil lines and vacuum lines. I did some research and found out that this is a known problem with vw engines and even after doing the $2,800 worth of work, the engine will still fail within a year. I have gone to another repair shop to perform an oil flush and I was able to drive another 500 miles before the light came on again. I have gone for 2 more oil flushes. Now, they will do 2 oil flushes each time. The first time, there will be a lot of sludge that comes out and the 2nd time is clear. There is an obvious problem with sludge build up and will eventually ruin the engine. I know there was a recall on 1. 8t engines for this same issue. It is an issue with all vw engines, not just the 1. 8t.
On a warm day with the a/c running, my 2006 Passat 3. 6l will have an engine surge increasing rpm to 1,000 while stopped. This has almost amounted in a crash on numerous occasions as it makes the car difficult to keep stopped and causes it to lunge forward. It also results in low fuel economy as the car idols much higher than the normal 600rpm.
Engine rpm increases when vehicle is stopped and air conditioner is running causing the need for additional pressure on brakes to prevent car from moving forward.
Engine started fine, and let it ran for a minute or two on drive way. Then suddenly it died. Computer screen displayed "stop", oils pressure can, and low oil pressure warning lights came on.
I am the owner of a 2000 vw Passat with the 1. 8 liter turbo engine. This engine is known to have serious sludging issues. This was unknown to me. Two months ago my oil pressure indicator lit up. I could not find any oil pressure issues so I took the car to the dealership 45 miles away. They "inspected" the car and informed me the engine was sludged up. Apparently vw has a warranty regarding this issue but only if you can produce every receipt of every oil change the vehicle has ever had from the day it was purchased from vw. Problem: I am the second owner. I can not produce receipts from the previous owner. To compound the problem I purchase my oil and filters by the case to last me several years. I do not have those receipts of those purchases anymore. I changed the oil according vw specifications located in the manual. To make matters worse vw decided to change the owners manual to state that synthetic oil must be used instead of regular motor oil, but did not inform me of this. Vw will/has contacted me as the new owner of the car regarding recalls but would not inform me of this very important maintenance change that could destroy my engine. Now vw wants to charge me over $4,000 to put a new "oil sludging kit" on my car to compensate for a known defect simply because I can not produce records to show that I changed the oil every three months and that I used synthetic oils instead of regular oil as the owner manual states.
I purchased a used 2003 vw Passat 1. 8t wagon in 2006. It worked perfectly until the warranty ran out at 75,000 miles and a number of issues occurred that I found out are know issues with this vehicle and issue. First the engine coils started failing and needed to be replaced. I ended up replacing four of them and then vw issued a recall but only covered a fraction of what it cost to replace. Then the stop turn engine oil pressure light started coming on and I found out that the 1. 8t engine has a known design flaw that leaves this engine susceptible to creating oil sludge even with routine maintenance. Vw issued a warranty extension for this engine and issue because they know it is a design flaw but will not fix the issue unless you show them a complete record of all oil changes. I maintained this car routinely but do not have all records millions of owners of this vehicle are now stuck with a dilemma of spending a lot of money to fix something that vw knew about and should have fixed. Vw needs to be held accountable and made to repair this issue for vehicle owners regardless of a complete maintenance record, because it is clear that this is an issue even with complete maintenance.
Oil sludge -- need new engine.

On September 6th of this year, a message appeared on the dashboard display low oil pressure, stop motor. I immediately called the dealership in pompton plains, NJ (the closest dealership to my house) to arrange servicing, since the car was not to be driven. The Volkswagen representative with whom I spoke on the phone instructed me to bring my car to the dealership. When I finally brought the car in, service manager joe informed me that what I experienced was likely engine trouble requiring of multiple part replacement and called oil sludge. I was told that it would cost $2,800 for repairs because the warranty on my five-year-old/56,000-mile car ran out. I called customer care at 1-800-822-8987 and spoke with representative named frodet and her supervisor, james custer, both of whom told me that this problem is not unheard of and has even been termed oil sludge and is covered under vw's special extended warranty 8 years/unlimited miles. Frodet opened case no. 70295194 in my name and called service manager. I received a call next day. I was told that in order to fix this problem under vw?s special extended warranty, I needed to provide all eleven receipts for oil changes that took place within the entire five-year period of ownership. After scouring my files, I found that I have a total of 20 receipts pertaining to service and maintenance of the vehicle, seventeen of which were not from the crest mont dealership. I faxed these seventeen receipts to the attention of service manager joe. The very next day September 18th, joe called me again to let me know me that a field factory representative reviewed these receipts and refused to admit sixteen of them. These receipts were from my personal mechanic to whom I had entrusted the care and service of every car I had. But, because my mechanic failed to specify my car's VIN, license plate number, and oil filter part numbers in the receipts, I was out of luck.
August 2007 I got an oil change from the 10 minute oil change place in north arlington, NJ. The first week of October my engine seized due to sludge. I always get my oil changed on a regular basis (3,000 miles) not the suggest 5,000 in my car manual. The 10 minute oil change place does not have a computer system to produce records and unfortunately I have only one receipt from the August 2007 oil change. So I went through all my old charge card receipts and debit receipts from my bank to prove that I did get my oil changed. However gensinger Volkswagen in clifton, NJ and Volkswagen of America the corporate office said that my receipts were not "proof enough" that it was my car even though some of my receipts had the oil change place twice in one month which proves that I got an oil change & my husband got an oil change. So since October 2007 my car has been undriveable and has sat in my driveway ever since. I have continued paying for my lease and my insurance on this car even though my car is undriveable. This 2005 Passat has only 25,500 miles on it and this engine should have never seized. Volkswagen Passats are known for heavy sludge in their engines and yet this company does nothing about it! I now have to pay for a new engine before I turn this leased car back. Please do something about this awful company.

My 2006 Passat 3. 6 has problems when pressing gas pedal. . Vehicle seems to have a delay when pushing peddle. . You can push pedal down 1/4 way before vehicle even jumps rpm's. . Vehicle will then just jump forward. . This has caused me to almost get into 3 or 4 accidents because I have pulled out and car just sits there then will just take off. . Vehicle was at dealership and had update done but this didn't help my problem. . Update caused me to now have same problem but also have shifting problem. .
Engine idle speed increases to 900-1000 rpm at stops in warm/hot weather. This causes driver to increase pressure on brake to stop car safely. This idle speed may hold for several stops before returning to normal 650-700 rpm. If in stop and go traffic, the high idle will hold longer. It has been suggested that the high idle is in response to the warm weather causing increased resistance in the battery cable from the battery in the trunk of the car (2006 vw Passat v6 only) causing a drop in voltage received. The ecm increases engine idle speed to compensate.
Cylinder head failed without warning, car had less than 75k. Car was serviced on a regular basis. Vw refused to pay for cost losing a thirty year loyal customer. They offered to apply $2200 to the repair of the car or apply it toward another new vw on the dealer lot, what a insult. I will never recommend their product.
While pulling the dipstick out of the engine in order to check the oil, the pull ring/handle broke off. I contacted my dealer for a replacement as the car is still under a bumper to bumper warranty. The dealer informed me that because I pulled the dipstick out of the engine rather than a dealer service department, the warrant is not applicable. In effect, the dealer told me that they must do all of the oil level checks, otherwise I do not have a warranty on the components affected. I appealed to customer service and they confirmed the dealer's decision. The consequence of the failure is that the oil level, necessary to ensure safe operation of the car, can not be checked.
A problem with the malfunction of the coils on the 03 engines of vw gl turbo. The problem causes the engine to misfire, making accelerations difficult and continuation of the operation of the vehicle dangerous. I was unable to continue driving, had to have it towed and then was charged an excessive amount at the dealership to replace the coils, even though this problem has been prevalent in these engines.
Vw Passat 2004 purchased new from dealer in Jan. Of 2005. We did our own oil changes following the manual recommended schedule and oil specifications (every 5,000 miles 5w-30 or 5w-40 regular or synthetic oil). We never received a letter from vw nor the dealership about the extended warranty for the known oil sludge problem nor any new requirements for oil changes. Most of the oil changes were done at home and recorded in the manual; two were done outside and have receipts. Oil pressure light went on at about 45,000 miles, car was towed to dealership. They recommended a new motor. Dealership contends that warranty will not cover it because they require synthetic oil only and for oil to be changed at the dealership. Vw warranty denied warranty service. Car is still at the dealership.
