2000 vw Passat 1. 8t had fuel leak. The car had a fuel leak in the garage which could have caused afire. This is a serious problem. I did some reading and thought it would be covered by a recall. However, the vw dealer charles maund volkswagan indicated that it was not covered by any recall.

I have had my 2003 vw Passat for 7 months now and have already had it in the shop 3 times. Right after I bought it used from a vw dealership the turbo went out. I had to pay for that. I then drove the car about 150 miles for a tournament and when almost there a light came on saying to stop and turn off the engine. Took it to vw dealership and it was covered by vw. It had something to do with sludge from oil. Got it back and 3 days later a light came on. It was the mil light. I took it in to the vw dealership. Still waiting to hear what the problem is this time. I have now had my oil changed 3 times in 5 thousand miles due to repairs. It has been one thing after another with this car so far.

I had my car diagnosed at the vw dealer, and they said there are emission problems related to the recall I recently found on my car, when I called the number on the recall, vw customer service insisted I was not included because my VIN number hadn't been included in the recall. This car regularly smokes, lets off huge smog clouds when I put gas and is a fire risk according to their recall. I don't drive it because I'm afraid it is going to explode into flames.

Volkswagen has a recall due to fire hazard. Because I live in a small town, the nearest Volkswagen dealership is in the next state. When I explained this to the Volkswagen people they said I had to do this recall at a dealership with no compensation from them for my time or my expense. They also said that since I called them, they are no longer liable for this problem if my car caught on fire. I told them that I am not waiving any of my rights with this phone call and asked to have the call recorded. The nearest dealership is a six hour drive from my residence and be expected to wait three or more hours for the replacement on my vehicle to be done. This is unacceptable for me due to the fact that I am disabled and on a limited income. We have a Volkswagen repair shop here in my town. German motors 1065 k st arcata CA 95521 they will not let me have the recall done there.
1. On the evening of Friday October 24, 2008 my check engine light began flashing and the car started running rough. 2. On the morning of Saturday October 25, 2008 I brought the car to southpoint Volkswagen in baton rouge, la. They diagnosed the problem as a faulty #4 engine coil. They replaced the coil, tested the car and returned it to me. The car seemed to function properly and the check engine light remained off. 3. The next day, Sunday October 26, 2008, after driving only 28 miles, the check engine light started flashing and the car began running rough again. I immediately pulled off the road into a gas station. At this time I noticed smoke coming out from under the hood. I opened the hood to find a fire near the lower part on the passenger side of the engine compartment. We extinguished the fire and had the car towed back to southpoint Volkswagen. 4. Southpoint replaced the other 3 coils and other parts that were damaged by the fire. 5. Friday, October 31, 2008 southpoint vw made arrangements to meet in orange, TX, to return my Passat and pick up the rental car. After this exchange, and approximately 15 minutes of driving time, the check engine light came on and was steady. 6. I then learned that the check engine light was caused by an issue with the emission system. The coil failure allowed unburned gas to go into the exhaust system damaging the the catalytic converter. Vw has acknowledged that this is what happened but has refused to repair the damage to my emission system. Diagnostic test at the time of the coil replacement show that the exhaust system was functioning properly prior to the fire.

The contact stated that it should be clearly stated in the notice that additional charges may accrue. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 70,000.

This car was never inspected for recalls, or safety issues. The moment the car was handed to us the battery died. The dealership quickly change the battery. The car was hesitating on acceleration ever since. It was on July 27 2008 that finally the check engine light came on. Took the car to a garage and it has coast us 270 dollars to fix it so far. We have not had this car for more than a month. There are two recalls on this car that were never look at or fixed by precision Toyota of tucson . One of these recalls can cause fire.
Vehicle leaked a large amount of fuel (~4 gallons in 3 days). No fire, but there is now a large hole in my driveway. Shop says leak is from top of engine.
The contact owns a 2002 Volkswagen Passat. While driving approximately 30 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from the front end of the vehicle. She pulled over to a local service station and noticed that the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished by a representative at the service station. Weeks later, the contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 08v156000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery). She is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. The failure and current mileages were unknown.

Last Saturday (Feb. 9, 2008) around 11:00am, while I was picking up my two daughters from ballet school (boston ballet, 19 clarendon street, boston), the check engine lamp started to blink and I could feel my car (2002 Passat wagon, all wheel drive) was a little bit shaking. As the car manual says, I drove in low power to the closest Volkswagen dealership (boston Volkswagen, 168 western avenue, allston). While I was driving to the dealership, I saw some smoke coming out from the front hood (right front side). We (my daughters, my wife, and myself) got the dealership around 11:30am. A sales consultant (michael petersante) and another person there saw my car, and said that my car possibly would catch on fire. We evacuated from the car, they moved all the cars around my car to the other place. The dealer called for a fire department. Before the fire department came in, while I was looking at my car from the inside of the dealership building, I could see the flame coming out above the right front wheel in the car (somewhere the engine is located) and smoke filling up inside of my car. The fire department (boston fire-engine 41, ladder 14, unit d11) came and put out the fire. A police officer (boston police district 14, 301 washington street, brighton) came after the fire was extinguished (arrived at 11:53am), and checked out the scene and had my car, whose front part (engine compartment) was all broken and crushed while the wire was put out, be towed. It was hard to believe that a 5-6 years old car caught on fire while I was driving and in just 30 minutes reached to such situation. Fortunately, we were close to the dealership and were able to get there before the worst thing happens. And again, very fortunately, my family was able to get away to the safe place before the worst thing happens. But if it happened 10 minutes earlier or if it took 10 minutes longer than actually it did to get there, things that I dont ever want to imagine could happen to my family.
My 2000 vw Passat 1. 8 manual smells strongly of gasoline on a semi-regular basis. Despite the fact that other Passats from 1999-2005 are subject to a recall for this problem, vw has refused to correct the same problem in my car, based on the VIN number.
I own a 2001 vw Passat and I noticed a very strong odor of gasoline when driving at any speed in temperatures of 17 degrees. I brought my car to the alexandria vw dealership (alexandria, va) twice and they kept it for a few days but found nothing. After reading through the other reports online, I feel that vw corporation of America should replace all associated parts that could cause this and avoid potential vehicle explosions and loss of life.
I am complaining about a 2002 Volkswagen Passat 1. 8t. With 76,000 miles on the car based on the latest news from the dealer today I will have invested over $1000 on various failures of the fuel evap system. First it was vacuum hoses and now it is the charcoal canister and purge valve. There has been one recall on one part of the system which of course was not what was wrong at any point with my vehicle. The entire fuel evap system is faulty and vw knows it and refuses to do anything about. It is a great moneymaker for them as only they have the access to the electronic codes and parts to repair the system and tremendously over inflated prices.
Check engine light came on for 6 times since purchased new. Latest incident, in first week of August, 2007 - the diagnosis was "found fault for evap system incorrect purge flow, tested purge valve and found to be stuck". For 6 dealer visits, 2 identical diagnosis with 2 replacements. Is this a design fault? defective part? why the repetitive issue with the same area. Car only has 48,000 miles.
The fuel sensor fails after about one year of use. It has been replaced twice. The failure mode is that it always reports twice the actual amount of fuel available.
Bought a 2003 vw Passat 1. 8t in may 2005. Since then, I have taken the car to the dealership for repair 4 times now. The car will all of the sudden start running very rough and the check engine light came on. The first time, they replaced a "defective" spark plug. Within a few days of getting it back, it happened again. They decided to replace all the spark plugs that time. It happened a third time and they did not tell me what they had done to the car, but kept the car for a week. It is currently in the shop again (now for a week again) because it began to run rough, developed a slow oil leak, and does not always start on the first attempt. I have not yet heard from the dealership what is causing the problems. I asked them to check everything on the car. I have also lodged a complaint with vw of America.
I own a 2003 Passat 4-motion. I purchased it from the dealer in July of 2005 when it had 42,000 miles on it. Almost immediately I noticed two things about the car: first, it sometimes hesitates when trying to accelerate and then when it does finally take off, it "leaps" forward. Second, when shifting down sometimes, it does not do so normally but will actually jerk the car badly and make a "clunky" sound, like the transmission is failing. This seems to happen when you don't come to a complete stop and then try and accelerate again, like stop and go traffic. I have had the car back to the dealer many times and have been told that this is just a "characteristic" of the car and that there is nothing they can do about it. Overall I am very disappointed in the car.
Stalling without reason. Dealer cannot find the problem.

Electrical problems from the start, melting of plastic, lights in the car working sporadically at best. Oil, drain, oil pump, camshaft, all blamed on lack of verifiable oil changes. Timing belt - let go on highway at 85000 miles (warranty for 1999 Passat, 100,000 miles) blamed on oil changes. 82 days in shop steering goes during this time and I'm told I need an altenator [ 3rd one ] the story goes on and on. . . . . .
Bought the car new 4/02, ignition coil failed in 8/02 with only 1000 miles on car. The vehicle started shaking and lost power w/ baby in the car on a highway. Car was towed to the dealer and they replaced the ignition coil. Happened again on 10/31/02, car was at the dealership for almost 1 month waiting for another ignition coil. Dealer provided rental car and complaint was filed with v. W. They paid my car payment for month of 11/02. Many people having same problem. Dealer's lot was full of cars waiting for this part. I took their last rental car, lucky for me, since I got an impala ss instead of a 2 door cavalier. There should be a recall issued on these ignition coils. There are many lemon law cases filed against vw. Also very poor gas mileage and acceleration. Very dangerous left hand turns when the car just sits there and you're hitting the gas!!!.
Previously repaired fuel leak has recurred, ~18 months later. Leak can be seen when vehicle has been sitting for several hours and is then backed out of garage down inclined driveway. Fuel is leaking from passenger rear wheel area.
Diesel fumes in passenger compartment.
