37 Steering problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/20/2022

The clock spring has broken again. The clock spring had been replaced on this vehicle in spring 2020, it is currently summer 2022. The vehicle currently has approximately 162,000 miles. I am concerned because the vw dealers state that there is a nationwide back order on this part, with people waiting since early 2022 for the part at this time.

39 Steering problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/09/2022

It just died and I lost brakes, power steering, and only know what else stopped working. Come to find out the splines wear off of the oil pump shift after the counter balance and chain goes out. This is so common a problem that when you google what happened there are numerous videos and complaints about this issue, with ways to stop it from happening. Korea has already recalled them and europe has recalled them, why are we so far behind on this. Not only is it expensive, but also a major safety issue because this stops the brakes from working and the car does not have stopping power with the motor dead. Not everyone knows to report to NHTSA!.

41 Steering problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/23/2022

Airbag clock spring has broken but part is unavailable and has been on back order for over a year. I now do not have an airbag, horn or any steering wheel buttons. Couldn’t care less on the buttons but my concern is safety with the airbag and horn. Also it will no longer pass my states inspection. Volkswagen needs to fix this and now! part on back order for over a year and no expected time in near future is unacceptable for those in this position!! :(. They should realize some people will die instead of survive certain crashes without airbags working!!.

43 Steering problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/24/2022

Vw bcm unit causes vehicle to idle then shut off while driving making it impossible to steer or increase speed.

44 Steering problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/21/2022

Clock spring has failed. Te vehicle has been inspected by the service dealership department and confirmed the prognosis. The clock spring failure prevents the airbag from deploying in an accident. It also controls the electronic components in the steering wheel blinkers, horn etc they also do not work. Airbag light came on and as I went to honk my horn at another car my horn did not work creating a safety hazard and almost causing an accident. Luckily I slammed on my breaks and no one was behind me. Immediately notified the dealership service department of problem they confirmed the clock spring has failed and told me the car is still driveable but comes with hazardous safety issues that may prevent saving a life in the event of an accident. For example no horn to alert another car, no blinkers to safely change lanes, if in an accident airbags won’t deploy etc.

45 Steering problem of the 2018 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/04/2022

Clockspring. Failed 1st time under recall and was replaced by dealer. Failed 2nd time and replaced outside of recall by indepenent. Failed 3rd time and has not been replaced. This has affected the adaptive cruise control, the electronic stability control, and now it engages the brake system when not called for.

46 Steering problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/26/2022

I had my battery changed at the vw dealership and a week later, my horn stopped working, my airbag light came on and my front assist no longer works. There’s also a clicking noise when I turn my steering wheel. It seems this clock coil issue has been a recall issue for vw for years, but when I search my VIN it list no recalls of this nature.

47 Steering problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/21/2022

I purchased this car brand new oct 2016. Since then I have experienced multiple sensor failures year after year… at first we thought this was a one time failure but as more and more issues came our concerns grew. I have changed out the radio, 3 speed sensors, and now am having more issues with different symptoms. For example my epc light is no and my check engine is on along with the other typical light I have seen with my speed sensor issues. I can not confidently pass any cars because the car stalls at 3000 rpms. I consider this car a safety issue on the road and I do not want this car anymore because I do not know what hidden failures will appear later on after fixing these.

48 Steering problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/01/2022

The recall listed on the previous page explains why visibility is so poor when low or high beams are on while driving, no matter what the weather conditions are. My safety, along with my family's safety, and oncoming traffic were put at risk due to such poor visibility. I don't have this problem with my other Volkswagen (2017 jetta). The other problem I encountered is with my steering wheel. I was turning and I heard what sounded like a crinkle type noise. It was rather brief so I didn't pay attention and then it made the sound again when I turned wheel in the opposite direction and again on my next turn. The following day I heard the same type of noise while turning in either direction and then the noise sounded like a spring breaking. I then noticed a light on my dash come on. The light was orange in color displaying a similar no seat belt wearing flash display. Once I was home I looked into what dash light meant and it had to do with an airbag malfunction. I went on to notice that none of my steering wheel functions worked nor did my horn. I researched possible recall involving steering wheel clock spring in a 2014 Passat and found it was indeed a recall. I purchased this car for my soon to be licensed son and he needs these recalls fixed as soon as possible in order to use car for his driving test in April. The nearest vw dealer is in green bay, WI which is a few hours away from my home. I was informed by a close friend that works for vw that recalls could be fixed by halbinsel Mazda in escanaba mi. My other vw is currently in storage and I am unable to get to it until spring time when the snow melts. This leaves me with the Passat with poor visibility and if I were to get in an accident the airbag wouldn't deploy because of clock spring recall nor can I warn anybody by honking my horn. Both recalls are putting myself, my loved ones and traffic at major safety risks. My vehicle is available for inspection, so matter can be resolved as soon as possible.

49 Steering problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/25/2022

No prior warnings before malfunction ,all fuses were checked to no fault. Obd scan reported car lost communication with steering column control module on steering wheel, multifunction buttons and horn stopped working. Airbag light illuminated. Obd scan reported driver airbag igniter resistance too high emergency braking and blind spot were no longer working although front parking assist still worked.

50 Steering problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/18/2022

The clock spring in my vw Passat has failed twice, leaving my horn and drivers side airbag inoperable. By not having an airbag and horn creates a safety hazard to myself as the driver if I were to be involved in a head on collision and the other drivers as I cannot notify them via a honk of the horn. This vw part has a past of failing and recalls. There is just not a specific recall on my VIN. The part is on “back order” making a resolution almost impossible.

51 Steering problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/14/2022

For the second time in the life of this 2104 vw Passat auto, the airbag clockspring, housed in the steering wheel has failed. The first date of service for this issue was 3/7/2019 and most recently was attempted on 2/22/2022. In both instances, the same symptoms occurred prior to the failure of this component. For a few days prior, there was a plastic crackling sound when turning the steering wheel. Then while backing out and turning the steering wheel, an audible snap/crack was heard, causing an inability to use the hands-free phone device, all steering wheel controls (including cruise control, volume, dashboard items), and an immediate lack of the car horn. Simultaneously, the air bag indicator light illuminated and the vehicle status stated "error: airbag". This error message appears each time the car is started. The inability to have a working car horn, steering wheel controls and driver airbag is a tremendous safety risk, in my opinion, so I ceased driving the car immediately and brought the vehicle to a local vw dealership for confirmation of the issue. The issue was reported, evaluated and confirmed to be needing part# 5k0953569al (air bag clockspring) on 2/22/2022. We were informed by (3) different vw dealerships and (2) private mechanics that there were over 1500 of these parts on backorder in February. Currently, as of 6/27/2022, there are twice as many backordered and the dealership service department that this car was purchased from says this has been the case for over (6) months. My vehicle is undrivable and will not pass upcoming inspection. It is unacceptable for vw corporation to not have a viable solution to this gross safety issue, while still putting new automobiles on the market, possibly with faulty parts and no foreseeable plan for those consumers, like me, that are in need of timely repairs. This vehicle is available for "inspection upon request" as it sits in the driveway, unusable.

52 Steering problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/02/2022

The clock spring has went out on my 2012 vw Passat, but vw does not have them in stock, nor do they know when they'll have them in stock. This means that the drivers air bag will not work in the event of an accident. They are not doing a recall, but are doing an "extended warranty". They are knowingly putting unsafe vehicles out on the road.

53 Steering problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/14/2022

The clock spring has failed in my car unexpectedly and rapidly, exposing me as a teenage driver in college to complete unsafely while driving my car, as the airbags and brake assist that my parents wanted in my car to keep me safe do not function. There have been recalls on Volkswagens for the clock spring before, and there should be one now. The car is 7 years old and has a little less than 73,000 miles on it - the clock spring should not be failing.

54 Steering problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/29/2021

While at the dealership for other emission related warranty items, the vehicle clock spring broke which disabled the driver side air bag, the horn and other steering wheel related controls. This occurred in late December 2021. The replacement part was on back order with no definitive delivery date provided. As of today, 4/5/22, the item is still on backorder with no estimate date for parts.

55 Steering problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/23/2021

Per volkswagon the vehicle is known to have a defective steering clock spring. When the part fails, the vehicle steering wheel looses all electronic function. The airbag is deactivated and the horn does not work. This failure have happened with my vehicle. Volkswagon has initiated a recall; however, it has been 2 months and they can still not provide an eta of when the vehicle will be repaired and have instructed to drive the unsafe vehicle until the parts come in. The failure initially happened in Dec 2021. This week in Feb 2022 I was run off the road by an elderly drive in an SUV that changed lanes. I was unable to notify the other diver that I was next to her because the horn did not work!.

56 Steering problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/14/2021

While driving straight in dry weather (I. E. No rain), the lane light will change from – green – to – yellow – color in the dash and the steering wheel will jerk, usually left, sometimes right, very abruptly, as if the car is trying to find the lane with lane assist on. Note, this is on well marked city streets and on regular interstate roads with clearly marked dashed lane lines. This has been happening for at least two months (today's date Dec. 12, 2021) and only now reporting this complaint. It did almost cause me to run into the car beside me several times or turn into the center median (trees) on city streets.

57 Steering problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/01/2021

My 2012 Passat was supposedly repaired under a recall action for the clock spring. However, same symptoms began to occur later in time and now it is apparent that the issue has not been solved and needs to be re-accomplished.

58 Steering problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/01/2021

My airbag light came on, the steering wheel started to make crunching noise. Now all functions are now working on the steering wheel and upon looking up online there seems to be many issues with Volkswagen cars clock spring breaking. Why is this not recalled? there is hundreds of customers commenting about the same problem?.

59 Steering problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/30/2021

On Saturday October 30, 2021 my car was parked on the driveway. I tried to put the key in the ignition and the key would not go in. There is a white plastic piece in the ignition that will not allow the key to go in. My steering wheel and front tires locked. I called aaa and had a tow truck come so that I could have the car towed to the dealership. The driver was able to wiggle the key and start the car. I dropped off the car at the dealership on Saturday oct 30th. I was told by the dealership that the key cylinder and steering wheel lock housing plus keys need to be replaced. I contacted vw of America and was told that they will not replace the part because the car is out of warranty. This is obviously a defect as there have been many recalls with this part in different model vw's. The dealership is trying to charge me $934. 03 for this repair which I believe is a defect. Service advisor at Volkswagen stated that it is not safe to drive the car as it could leave me stranded. There were no warning lights or other symptoms prior to failure on Saturday October 30, 2021.

60 Steering problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/16/2021

The steering tightens up at times when decelerating between 30 - 42 mph. This has occurred three times now since purchase of the vehicle new. My vehicle database feedback notes no repairs needed; just check of vehicle at 20,000 miles and oil change at 10,000 miles. I am subscribed to the vehicle's car-net data monitoring system since purchase of the vehicle new from the dealership. The monitoring system notes gps location, speed travelling, etc. When this steering condition occurs it is as if power to the steering is lost for about 0. 7 - 1. 2 seconds. It is as if driving in a vehicle that has an electrical system controlling the power functioning of the steering and there is a loss of electrical feedback to the steering. I have driven over 100 vehicles and this vehicle does have a problem with the steering system. There is a noticeable pull back on the vehicle when the automatic shifts down and this steering issue may or may not be related to the automatic transmission downshifting mechanisms.

61 Steering problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/01/2021

I was driving this particular day through a busyfour way stoplight intersection around time school was dismissing so 3:30ish pm. And I lost all power to my vehicle with just the battery light flashing once. I barely made it out of the I intersection and to the shoulder of the road as there was no power steering and I had to pump my breaks to stop. I called the local police and let them know it would be towed tomorrow morning. The tow bill was 100 dollars and I had replaced the battery thinking it was the problem. The brand new battery drained in two minutes tops after install alternator was tested and fuses were in working order all except for one that went to my12 volt charging port which was replaced as well as serpentine belt was replaced with alternator test. The battery still drains instantly and when speaking with volkswagon suntrup in sunset hills st. Louis which is the nearest Volkswagen dealership about 30 minute drive my car still is under a dealership warranty for the national emissions recall that was just fixed after I purchased the vehicle. The dealership refuses to come get/ fix/ diagnose or rectify vehicle although admitting to knowing this year has parasitic draws instally killing a brand new battery even while driving was/is a very dangerous situation for me and my family. This car has been sitting in my drive way now for 6 months while nothing is being by vw and I am without safe or working transportation for my family. Ive also been told by vw. That they cant find some parasitic draws and are confused as me!.

62 Steering problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/23/2021

When parallel parking, the steering wheel began making a clicking noise when turning. The volume and duration of the clicking increased after pulling out from parking spot into the street and the instrument panel airbag light/chime came on within a mile of driving. Clicking in wheel while turning persisted intermittently throughout driving. All electrical controls on steering wheel are no-response. Horn does not work, airbag deactivated, and all steering wheel electronic controls are no-response.

63 Steering problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/01/2021

My airbag clockspring has went out and now my horn and cruise control does not work . Nothing on my steering wheel work.

64 Steering problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/01/2021

The contact owns 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that puddles of oil could be found on the ground after parking the vehicle. The contact also stated that while making a turn in either direction the vehicle would wobble causing him to lose control of the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that the tread in the driver’s and passenger’s side front tires were wearing excessively. The contact stated that the front tires had been replaced multiple times; however, the failure persisted. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer on multiple occasions; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 32,103.

65 Steering problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/03/2021

The assisted lane control is working terribly on my car and cannot be turned off permanently. The take over steering must be turned off before I drive the car every single time. It does not work properly. Last week I went to steer around a pothole and almost went in the ditch because the steering control was "fighting" with me to not let me steer where I needed to go. The previous incident I was trying to go around a cyclist and had to literally fight with my steering to keep it from hitting the biker. It is terrible. The dealer told me it could not be permanently disabled. It is a hazard and someone is going to get hurt. The service rep told me that NHTSA has made it mandatory for the car manufacturers to have these safety features disabled by default with no way to permanently turn them off. I want to stress how unsafe this is. I truly believe there are many things government can help us with but to get in the middle of me steering my car is not one of them. This is government overreach. The vw customer care person I spoke to also told me they have been plagued with complaints from owners who want the steering control disabled. There is a setting to disable it, but I have to remember to turn it off every single time I start my car. I want the NHTSA to (1) put pressure on vw to fix the steering assist problem and allow for steering changes to safely pass bikers and other vehicles on the shoulder without needing the directional signal and (2) make the assist something that can be turned off by default. I do like to use it when I am on a long highway drive, but never around town. It is terrible and beeps and takes control of the steering and I am tired of fighting with my car. Someone will get killed if you leave it like this. People need to decide for themselves if they want the steering assist or not. Default on needs to end when a person turns it off - it stays off until they turn explicitly it back on.

66 Steering problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/23/2021

I started my car and it showed up with “airbag error” I then turned off my car and started it again and something along the lines of “front lane assist error” showed up, there was also a clicking noise from my steering wheel anytime I would turn the wheel, the car also was “breakchecking” me (aggressively breaking when barely any pressure applied) when I was trying to drive home and the digital speedometer is no longer showing up on my dash board. I was only able to get a picture of the “airbag error” message.

67 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/16/2021

The power steering system fails when the engine/engine compartment gets hot. The problem has appeared after the car has been shut down (such as when refueling or a quick run into a store) and then restarted. When the key is pushed in to start the car, there is a loud grinding noise, a visible shimmy of the steering wheel, followed by the red steering wheel icon indicating there is a problem and 3 chimes. The steering wheel is locked in position with very limited turning ability and ability to control the direction of the car.

68 Steering problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/15/2021

1. Air bag clock spring (twice) 2. No horn, no airbag driver side safety issues. 3. Yes, twice confirmed by vw dealer 4. No other inspections, just vw dealer 5. No warnings of the issue until none of the controls were working - now an air bag light January 29, 2020 - 82227 miles, no air bag, no horn, no steering wheel controls. Brought to dealer - says there is a known issue with the clock spring and replaced it no charge. August 11, 2021, 123221 miles, no air bag, no horn, no steering wheel controls. Brought to dealer - says not covered. The first clock spring lasted 80,000, the second one even more faulty - lasted barely 40000.

69 Steering problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/06/2021

Steering wheel controls, such as volume control, song control stopped working. As well as airbag light came on. Then a week later heard clicking while turning steering wheel and noticed horn doesn’t work as well.

70 Steering problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/30/2021

The driver airbag light went on, the whole steering wheel control stopped working as soon as this light went on. The agency advices us that this is a very common issue with this vehicle. That there was a recall for this same issue for the clock coil I believe he called it, and I want to verify why my vehicle is experiencing this same issue and is not one of the recalled models? how do you determine that only certain models where affected, this you use different coils for different vehicles?.
