1998 vw Passat: heard loud clanking noises especially when turning vehicle. Reported to vw service department local dealership. Advised the the upper control arm joint is worn and need replacement. Further, both left and right tie rods are totally shot and need replacing. Checked and found that the tie rod problem was recalled by NHTSA Sep. 1999 (99v-248) but that my vehicle was not included in recall. Do not know why as the problem described is the same. Additionally, numerous complaints about the control arms have been noted on this site, yet vw of America, who advised me are aware and sensitive to the problem, refused assistance in repairing the vehicle. Also the recalled tie rods replacement was refused to be fixed by them. Please follow up and investigate vw of America for these very important safety issues since I was told that they can cause serious driver accidents. I am also wondering why the brake rotors needed replacement when new brakes were installed. Do not trust vw to be a safe vehicle at this time.

As a result of a persistent rattling in the front right end of my 4 cyl. 1999 vw Passat, I took my car in for investigation. I have been advised by two independent repair shops that both upper control arms on both sides of the car as well as the tie rod ends must be replaced to the tune of $1200. If they are not replaced, I have been advised that one could break and I would have no steering. Obviously at a high rate of speed this could be dangerous or deadly. I have spoken with vw and even though they acknowledge issuing a TSB on this defect, they refuse to cover its repair. This is a safety issue that must be addressed sooner rather than later. Thank you for any help you can provide in this area.

Vehicle has same problem with the tie rod as those included in the recall, however, the consumer's vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.
Rear brakes replaced/tie rod boots/ front axle rusted/replaced.
Faulty outer tie rod end seal for vw Passat 1. 8t. Car with only 46000 miles already needs new outers tie rod end due to premature/faulty brakage of seal.
My car began to shake and the check engine light started flashing. I drove directly to the vw dealer service dept. I found that my power output stage has failed and tie rod ends are blown out on 1999 vw Passat at 39,990 miles. Not to mention that my pollen filter housing is leaking.
This vehicle experienced the same failure as described in tie rod recall 00v414000. However, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN.
While driving at any speed the vehicle vibrated . The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the driver that the tie rods needed to be replaced. Please provide further details. The consumer wants the dealer to fix the problems with the vehicle.
Our 1998 Passat has only 50,000 miles on it, and yet all of the expensive front control arms are starting to go bad. They are getting play in the ball joints, which are only replaceable by replacing the whole control arms. Since there are a total of 8 control arms, the cost of repair is potentially very high. And if they are not replaced, the potential for hazard and injury becomes very great if the joints get so sloppy that they affect the handling of the car and eventually come apart. Vw should not be allowed to get away with building such an under-engineered suspension system.
Mechanic is telling me all four tie rod assemlbies and control arms need replaced. I have been hearin a loud crunching noice everytime I go over a small bump or turn a corner.
The front of my car constantly groans when I move the steering wheel (while driving or not) and if I apply pressure to the front end. I took the car to my mechanic (not vw) who said that there is something going on with the struts, tie rods, or something in that area. He recommended I talk to vw to see if the item is recalled or covered by warranty in any way. I called vw gave my VIN and it is not part of the current recall regarding tie rods. I bought one of the first 1998 vw Passats of the b5 series.
While driving at any speed front end wobbled. Consumer took vehicle to a mechanic for a front end alignment. Mechanic determined that the tie rods needed to be replaced.
Had to replace all of the front control arms and tie rod ends on my 2000 Passat glx 4-motion wagon. Five out of 8 control arms were in very poor conditions with torn boots over the ball joints. The ball joints in the controll arms were torn and ball joins were dry and noisy. The tie rod ball joins were worn out and making noises. The car has not be wrecked or damaged other wise.
Tie rod ends wore out prematurely due to faulty lubricant boots resulting in erratic control of the vehicle. Models similar to mine were recalled by vw, but not mine. My mechanic says the parts are identical.
Tie rod ends failed on 2000 Passat effecting the steering control. Prior to 44000. Dealer stated this is considered normal for Passat . Tie rod ends were returned to me and the seals were not protecting the swivel bearing. Independent auto repair shop advised there had been a previous recall in 99 for the same problem but this car was not included. We believe Volkswagen may have the same or similar issue with tie rod ends on additional autos.
During a scheduled maintenance check, an independent mechanic determined that the tie rods were loose and must be replaced. A recall was issued for some 1999 and 2000 models, however the consumer was informed that his vehicle was not included.
Vehicle inspection by independent mechanic indicated that both front tie rods need to be replaced. There is a recall campagin but vw dealership indicated that my vehicle was not covered under.
Worn tie rod ends, resulting in vague steering on my 1998 vw Passat (original owner) and required. Two recalls were issued on 1998 Passats, but dealer and vwoa advised me that my VIN was not eligible for the recall.
2000 vw Passat wagon- less than 50 thousand miles- mechanic informed us that the tie rod ends were shot. Contacted vw with a complaint about the rate of failures of many parts of this car. These failures are what would be considered premature. Vw asked me to bring in vehicle for a thorough inspection and confirmed tie rod failure- replacement to be at my expense.
Upper control arms on both sides are worn out. Tie rods are worn out on both sides. Catalytic converters needed replaced. I paid for the tie rods, warranty covered converters, and I have not had the upper control arms replaced. Oil leaks on engine. Interior lights do not activate when drivers door is opened.

At 62k miles 3 control arms/bushings and tie rod end have failed for no apparent reason. Authorized dealer's mechanic seemed surprised that this part failed so early. On the other hand, it seems like it is a well-known problem with 2000 Passats (and audis which are supposed to use same parts), and the recall has already been supposedly issued for in germany. Why has it not been addressed here in the u. S. If it's a known problem and safety risk?.
While driving at any speed, the consumer would hear a squeaking sound coming from the front end. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who found that the right outer and inner tie rods needed to be replaced.
The tie rod ends were dangerously worn and needed to be replaced at 59,000 miles. The VIN for the vehicle was lower than those included in an earlier recall but the problem appears to be the same. There is no reason for the tie rod ends to wear out that early unless they are defective. This is a safety hazard and appears to result from faulty parts.
Consumer had the same problem as described in the recall below , however this vehicle was not recalled due to the VIN. Nhtsa: recall 00-v-414-000: vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The tie rods of the steering assembly are protected on each side by a seal to prevent moisture and dust particles from entering the swivel bearing mechanism. It is possible that some tie rod seals may not seal properly.
(2000 vw Passat) mechanic indicated excessive tie-rod-end wear due to seal failure -- identical to failure subject to recall in 1999 model. Vw was notified on 7/7/2003 and declined to take responsibility for the repair.
Outer and inner tie rod failure (left and right).
The vehicle was taken to the shop for an alignment. The technician noticed that the tie rod ends were worn but the vehicle only had 60000 miles on it. The consumer found a recall (99v24800) on the internet which described the symptoms the vehicle experienced with the tie rods. The consumers vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN.
I am the second owner of a 1998 Volkswagen Passat VIN #wvwma63bowe259937, which has a safety recall for the tie rod ends. The local Volkswagen dealer(s) have acknowledged that the front tie rods do need to be replaced, however, they will not honor the safety recall. The reason is that there is no record of factory recommended service checks. I have had the vehicle serviced on a regular basis by a couple of independent mechanics, however, I cannot produce the paper work for the recommended service checks between 35,000 miles and 60,000. I called Volkswagen headquarters and they acknowledged that although it is a safety recall, they will not honor the repair unless I can provide proof of compliance. The symptoms have presented themselves for 3/4 years on an intermittent basis. I am in the process of having my current independent mechanic replace the ball joints.
Tie rod and control arms are prone to failure, I. E. Bushings become worn and will tear after time. The bushings on my vehicle for both upper control arms (currently @ 48000 miles) on both sides and tie rods have started to crack and tear.
The consumer received a recall notice (recall # 00v-414000) which advised him to seek repair for a faulty tie rod seals. The vehicle was dropped off at the dealer and they called the consumer when the repairs were complete. When the consumer returned to the dealer he was notified that his vehicle did not require the specific recall repair. About a year later the vehicle began experiencing front end problems. The consumer believed these problem were related tot he recall issued the previous year.
My 2000 vw Passat with 60,000 miles has 2 serious and expensive problems first one was when I noticed a loud popping noise on bumps and steering was very unstable on bumps. Took it to a shop and they told me it was the control arms and tie rod ends and that both were dealer items. So upon going to the dealer they told me they needed $90 dollars before they could even look @ it. So I said no but how much are the parts and turns out there more than $500 dollars. Three weeks later my abs light and asr light comes on and it reads in the middle of the dash to stop! brake fault so reading this with my family in the car I immediately pull over find out where the nearest vw dealer is and ask them to inspect the problem. Well that was easier said than done first they wanted the $90 dollars again before they would look at it and since I didn't have the money there was nothing they could do! nothing they can do!! that's crazy!! after arguing with them on why they don't want to look at it but it could cause a serious accident they said there's no immediate problem its ok to drive but it could be the abs module or the dash cluster its self. So I asked the price abs $1200 dollars new dash over $700 and that's not including labor. . So sorry to say but vw lost a customer with me and my family and friends. The car is just to new for this type of stuff to happen there should be a recall on this because I know im not the only one. And just to add, my old car which I have to drive now since I don't have the money to fix the problems with the vw is a Honda prelude with 185,000 miles and still no problems.
Defective tie rod assembly and lower ink arm-n and lower control arm-n caused potentially dangerous steering condition and made loud grinding noises.
Design flaw in tie rod ends and protective boot. Excessive wear and failure of joint could result in loss of ability to steer. This may result in an accident and vehicle damage.
There is a recall for the same problem which is your campaign id#99v248000. When I went to the dealer they described the same problem with my car but vw is saying that when they put the VIN number in it's not coming up on their system with a recall. I think Volkswagen America should consider that maybe the problem goes further back and not dismiss it because it doesn't show up on the computer. The Volkswagen dealer stated that the car needs front tie rod ends which is exactly what is described in the recall. If I got the information correct my car was mfg 11/97 which is earlier than the recall but the problem is described the same. They are saying that if its not on their computer it's not a problem. I think they should consider this is a problem. What car do you know that the tie rods wear at 56,000 miles. They also have stated the the front cv boots are torn. I want vw America to fix the tie rod problme under the recall.
