2 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/10/2018

For several months in 2018 our 2009 Volkswagen Routan would not start, windows would not work correctly, etc. On November 10th, 2018, our 2009 Volkswagen Routan was stationary and would not start at all. Called a tow truck to have it taken to the nearest dealership. Tow truck driver messed with the vehicle and was able to start it and we drove it to the dealership. The dealership received our vehicle on 11/10/18. The dealership notified us that there is an open recall on the "win module" and they would contact Volkswagen for the replacement parts. The dealership did not receive the part until 11/15/18 and the part was used/programmed for a different vehicle therefore it was unable to be installed in our vehicle. The dealership then provided us with a loaner vehicle and contacted Volkswagen for yet another unused part. It is now 11/28/18 and we still do not have our vehicle. The part was received and installed however the vehicle's battery will no longer hold a charge. The dealership wants to put a new battery in the vehicle and we will have to pay $150. 00 for the battery and installation. We never received notice of this recall. My husband lost 2 days of pay. We had to rely on 3 different people to get my husband to and from work. I am disabled and had surgery on 10/23/18 and unable to get to physical therapy let alone leave the house for a week because the dealership didn't have any available loaner vehicles until 11/15/18. This has been a danger to my family/children and a great inconvenience. Today 11/28/18 I am calling the actual Volkswagen customer service to report their negligence and the grief/expense they have caused my family. We purchased this vehicle because of Volkswagens reliability standards but we will now never purchase from their company again. As of today 11/28/18 we still do not have our vehicle returned!.

4 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/15/2018

This complaint involves a well-maintained minivan with 65,000 miles and an engine that quits unexpectedly while in motion, disabling the power steering and brakes. As described in the defect notice (part 573 filing), published 3/1/2011 and amended 5/10/2011, citing recall code 28g/u8, this minivan falls within the applicable VIN range and build dates however, Volkswagen refuses to cover the repair under the recall. The problems with the vehicle began approximately six months ago when the engine quit numerous times, mostly when stationary, right after starting, but twice when in motion in freeway traffic. In all cases, the key was untouched and remained in the on position and the dash lights remained on. Likewise, in all cases, after jiggling the key, the vehicle restarted and ran normally. About four months ago, a new problem surfaced whereby the engine would not start until we wiggled the key for between two and twenty minutes. Most recently, at the end of a trip, the vehicle will not shut off. The engine continues to run, even with the key removed. This problem prompted us to deliver the car to our local vw dealer on 12/26/2018 and their diagnostic notes include found internal separation of win module. their estimate is for replacement of the recalled item, the win module. It seems clear that the problem with this vehicle, and the part needed, both mirror exactly that which is detailed in the part 573 notice and as such, should be included in the covered repairs. Moreover, it is evident that the manufacturer did not accurately assess the extent of the defective vehicle range. I encourage the NHTSA to intervene and force this manufacturer to properly ensure the safety of those driving in, or around, these vehicles.

5 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 02/28/2018

The totally integrated power module (tipm) is defective causing the vehicle to stale while in-motion resulting in loss of power steering and braking and near misses. This has occurred while vehicle was in transit up to 45 miles per hour. The vehicle's dvd system stopped working. The vehicle has failed to start. Also, while making turns, from a stopped position, the vehicle has staled resulting in near misses with oncoming traffic. While starting the vehicle, the interior lights would flash while failing to crank start. The staling while in motion occurs multiple times daily. The vehicle has been to the mechanic at least 10 times since purchasing it in 2015. The vehicle has always had this problem since purchasing. The most recent visit to the mechanic concluded (2/2018) the tipm to be defective and that the Dodge/Chrysler products with the same tipm part is already recalled yet the vw sister-product is not recalled. The mechanic recommend replacing the tipm because it is a safety issue and will continue to cause staling at high rates of speed, near misses, if the part is not replaced. The cost to replace was approx. $1,500. 00. Nhtsa needs to issue a safety recall for the tipm in 2010 vw Routan.

6 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 01/12/2018

Vehicle fails to start. When the vehicle eventually does start the power steering is effected and appears to struggle to remain on. Issue began a on December 20, 2017 and randomly happens. I have seen several post on other sights with same issue with the ignition switch and tipm system.

7 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 03/13/2017

I recently purchased a used 2010 vw Routan sel. Within the first week I had the following problems. About every other day the car would not start when turning the key. I would have to wait about 15 minutes before the car would start again. The key would get stuck and not pull out. The security system would activate or deactivate and beep without pressing any button on the key. I was also locked out for 15 minutes when I couldn't get the unlock button to work on the key. It would just keep locking itself. I took it to a vw dealership who informed me that it was a well-known tipm problem and that it need to be replaced for 1100 usd. However, replacement would not gaurantee any fixes and it could actually cause other mechanical problems to arise. They also told me that this was the reason why the Routan was discontinued.

8 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 02/25/2017

9 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/05/2016

Car wouldn't start. Replaced battery. When I put key into ignition it started without turning key. Then went off and would not restart. Now the ignition can be moved without a key but will not start. Car was stationary this whole time.

10 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/09/2016

Car wouldn't start, hard cranks over several days. The engine would finally start after multiple attempts. Over the course of 5 days it got worse and worse. Took to mechanic - code said Dodge caravan r09. My mechanic said it is a common fuel pump relay inside the tipm, and that Chrysler has issued a recall, but vw hasn't. Took it to vw dealer, performed and charged me a complete diagnostic test - to tell me the same thing. Called vw corporate - said they were aware of the issue, but it is not a Chrysler and it is a vw rebagged car, and that I am responsible for a $1300 fix. Further issues, is that the part not readily available, and my family of 5 is out of transportation for 5 days. Our 2011 vw has only 61,000 and this is not the first issue. Upon researching it on the internet, I am not the only one with this problem. It is a shame that vw, won't stand behind their product and own up to the fact they have an serious issue.

11 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/20/2016

While driving all of my gauges began to sporadically move up and down and all of the instrument warning lights came on. The engine surged several times as well. The air conditioner also began to blow hot air. Later, when restarting the vehicle it would not start the first few times attempted. The engine would not turn over or anything. All of the above events keep continually and randomly recurring.

12 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 06/16/2016

Engine turns over but will not start while parked. Often the car will initially start but then stall as the rps decrease to idle. After that, the car will not start until after 20-30 attempts if lucky. On February 10, 2016 (milage 44,574) I took the car to my local vw dealership service dept. (roseville , CA). They replaced the transmission range sensor. Problem continued intermittently but got progressively worse. On June 16, 2016 (milage 46,615) took back to same service dept. Who now says there is a bad totally integrated power module (tipm). This seems to be a recurring problem throughout the Dodge, Chrysler, and vw family of minivans (vw Routan built by Chrysler). While Dodge and Chrysler seem to have addressed this problem, vw refuses to do so. This module can potentially kill the motor while driving making it an important safety concern.

15 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/18/2015

My 2011 Volkswagen Routan has failed to start on numerous occasions. The engine cranks with full power, but will usually not turn over. When it does turn over, it does not maintain idle and shuts off within a few seconds. Electrical testing by the mechanic identified a failure in the fuel pump relay part of the totally integrated power module (tipm), which needs to be replaced. Essentially identical parts (tipm/tipm7) have been recalled on town and country models by the manufacturer, Chrysler automotive.

16 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/13/2015

On September 15th 2015, I brought my 2011 volkswagon Routan to pioneer automotive services in oak harbor washington because the vehicle failed to start after several instances. After many hours of trouble shooting, I received word that it was the total integrated power module (tipm). They could order one and install it, but would have to be towed to burlington washington to the closest volkswagon dealership to be programmed. This part will cost me $822 with additional costs for installation and programming. After much research, I found there to be recalls for this part in Chrysler vehicles ranging in my year. I own a volkswagon, but it has a Chrysler motor in it. This indicates that my vehicle should have been recalled for this potentially life threatening defect, but because its a volkswagon with a Chrysler motor, this was their way to avoid an even larger number of recalled vehicles. The cost is disturbing, but the thought of what fatal end to this could bring has no price. All I seek is for Chrysler to own up to the flaw and replace this defect and to expand its possible recall numbers to make sure all vehicles that they placed their product in are evaluated. A timely response is very much appreciated. Thank you.

19 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/29/2014

Car battery is in good shape because I recently replaced it with a new one. The problem is occasionally I try to start the vehicle and it will not start when the electronic throttle control light is blinking but if I use my car keys to lock and unlock the car, then the electronic throttle control light will go off and car will start. Last week it occurred two times and I took the car to Volkswagen dealership but they told me, the diagnostic test is not showing any code and hence there is no problem with my car but I think there is a problem because I have experienced this problem five times in total. They requested I tow my car to them the next time it occurs to see if the code can be determined but I still not comfortable because I don't know what is coming next.

20 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/02/2014

7/2/14 - after being idle for 1hr the car would not start. After several repeat attempts it did. It would crank as normal, no dashboard warning lights ever came on. 8/8/14 - after 3hrs of highway driving we stopped to fill up with gas. Eco fuel never used the same crank issue occurred as 7/2. 8/9/14 - after 8hrs idle time the van would not start until repeated tries. I brought to dealership, they could not get the problem to repeat and suspected the tpim module. 8/10/14 - after 8hrs idle time the van would not start. When it finally did I drove 1/4 mile from the house and the van shut down completely. Lost all power steering and normal braking almost resulting in an accident. Called dealer back up and brought back into dealership 8/12/14 with expectation to have $900 tpim module replaced. Directing the dealership to leave the car outside overnight, push it in and then hook up to computers for evaluation they were able to find low fuel pressure reading from the fuel pump up until the it finally cranked over after several tries. After the initial start the van would read normal fuel pump pressures while running, turning it off and turning it back on again. However this does not explain why it shut down while driving. The car was returned and a new fuel pump was ordered for 8/19/14 install. 8/15 - 8/18/14 - the van shut off while driving twice not to mention everytime it sat idle it would have the same start up issues. 8/19/14 when the dealership received the fuel pump it was the wrong one. But the model# and serial# were exactly the same! so as it stands they can't fix it until they identify the fuel pump.

22 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 01/09/2014

The vehicle has a new battery which is correctly installed and free of corrosion. When the key fob is placed into the ignition and moved forward, the vehicle will not start. The dash lights come on, and it should start, but it does not. If you keep trying, or walk away and come back after a few minutes and try again, it does sometimes start. This intermittent problem seams to have no rhyme or reason and I am concerned the vehicle might stop while my wife or I drive it. This generally happens 4 to 5 times a month. Any help would be appreciated.
