37 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

As I am accelerating from 25-35 mph the vehicle almost feels like it doesn't want to shift into next gear. The vehicle sort of jiggles/jolts while trying to gear up. Once reaching 35/40 mph then vehicle runs normal. If I push down on gas peddle to make car go through that gear, the engine revs up and the vehicle kind of jolts a "get up and go" feeling and the rpms go above 4k, which then vehicle gets up in speed and moves. Once at 35/40 mph, then the vehicle runs smoothly.

38 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 02/05/2018

While taking my grandson to school this morning on a very curvy country road the engine died on my 2009 volkswagon routain. Having no brakes and no power steering made it very difficult to control vehicle. I turned on emergency flashers when car finally stoped turned to off position then restarted engine. This is not the first time this has happened to me and my wife. Problem cannot be diagnosed by dealer why can't Chrysler fix this serious problem before someone gets injured or killed. I know as well as NHTSA that this has happened to many people. Previous recall fix for ignition switch at wv dealer to solve this problem did not work . Its a shame that many people have to injured or killed by a serious known problem like this before companies are forced to fix them.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 12/19/2017

For past 2 years I noticed my the van would not immediately start. Figured it was a fluke. In past year, my van has been towed to dealership for not starting after 10-15 tries. Of course, as soon as it arrives the get it to start. Thankful under warranty. Nov 2017 wiring harness and starter replaced. Dec 2017 failed to start again. Back to dealer and working fine for them. Thankful under warranty. , but come on vm!! this is nuts. Why won't they recall and re place the tipem like chrystal did. I have been stranded too many times and had to 3 car seats each time.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 12/08/2017

The van has a Chrysler engine and the tipem part has been recalled under the Chrysler however vw has not recalled the part this is a 1300 fix.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/01/2017

My children and I were stationary at a light when the van started sputtering. When the light turned green I accelerated. Within 5 minutes the van cut off. I have a full tank of gas. This now happens often and I never know where or when it will cut off. Most days it will not start. I have had a vw mechanic take a look and they advised its the fuel pump relay same that was recalled on the Dodge and Jeep vehicles. Because this is the same one but in vw body.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/14/2017

The car will not start up the engine no matter how long I crank. Battery and starter seem ok. The problem has no warning on the dashboard whatsoever.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/11/2017

Our Routan has, yet again, left me stranded. I was running errands with two of my children and the vehicle would not start. This is not an isolated incident for me or, it would appear from research I've done, for this make and model. Our mechanic has run diagnostics and can not find anything wrong. It is a safety concern because it is unreliable and leaves me stranded, twice late at night, several times, fortunately, in front of my own home and this needs to be addressed.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/07/2017

Car won't start. Low charge, lights not working, horn not working, over heating. First it happaned while parked and then while driving.

The vehicle was towed to another independent mechanic who confirmed that the engine was defective. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but did not offer assistance. The failure mileage was 65,273.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 12/10/2016

I have been struggling with starting my Volkswagen Routan on the initial engagement of the key, the problem started within the last two months. In the same time frame, the vehicle would suddenly turn off in the middle of driving. I have seen that in 2009 and 2010 model there was a recall of the ignition switch that showed similar issues. My car does have 10000 miles, so I am trying to determine if it was an initial faulty item or a part that needs to be replaced. The dealership replaced the tipm module, but it did not correct the issues. I want to see if other 2011 models are experiencing the same issues, and wether the 2011 models should be extended to the recall for the 2009/2010 models.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/18/2016

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Routan. Once the vehicle was warmed up, it lost power. When the engine was not warmed up, the vehicle could only be operated for 10 to 15 minutes. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the lock torque converter between the valve body was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/02/2016

The van hesitates to start. It has turned off by itself while driving. The blinkers (right and left) sometimes work. The hazard lights sometimes work. The ac comes on and then comes off. We are the original owners and have kept up with maintenance on the van. We took the van into Volkswagen dealer service and were told that the 2011 model was plagued with electrical problems. We were told this time our tipm needs to be replaced. Ll of the problems we are experiencing are related to a problem Chrysler (who made the van) admitted to. Volkswagen will not replace the part. The tipm is known for not getting fuel to the engine which can stop the van. This has happened to us twice.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

I have replaced the brakes and routers 3 times since owning the van at over $1000 each time. The biggest issue I have is the fact that the car won't start. Very frequently, the van will not start leaving my kids and I stranded. It is a huge problem as I commute to work and we like to do things out of our area, not to mention just drive in general. This has been happening for a long time and has gotten worse over time.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 06/30/2016

Vehicle continues to shut down while driving without warning. Vehicle must either be stopped and restarted or placed in neutral while coasting to restart.

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 05/19/2016

For years I have experienced intermittent failures in starting my car, each time if I wait a while it will start. Additionally, beginning in Feb 2016, my engine will simply shut down while the car is in motion (pretty scary). I have dealt with vw several time to no avail and always at my expense. This latest development may cost me or someone else their life. Vw acts like this has not happened to anyone else and if they can't recreate the issue they can't address the issue, really! this is criminal! I have had a starter replaced as well as a switch and no change. All I get from vw is "you can take it to another dealer and get a second opinion we will cover 1 hour of the cost to diagnose the problem" really no greater expertise no information sharing, just another dealer, the third of which will likely tell me, we can't create the problem!.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/30/2015

After my van has been sitting for a while and it been warmed up for 15 minutes. With in the first 2 to 5 miles of driving the traction control light will come on and the van will shut off and the steering wheel and break will fail. Then I have to turn the key to off and restart the van and it sometime repeat itself if I'm stuck in traffic.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/03/2015

Had the win module replaced for the electrical system ignition switch recall. Now the car will make sudden stops and shut down. Car then will not start up unless the battery is unhooked and hooked back up. Dealer wants to charge 350. 00 to do a diagnostic test to determine the cause.

56 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/03/2015

The vehicle while driving had all the warning lights come on , the gauges go up and down and the vehicle cut off. This happened multiple times one afternoon. Had to have it towed to the house. Internet search shows that this is a routine problem for others as well.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

Our van has had on and off weird electrical things happening for a few months - wipers come on by themselves, air turns off by itself, lights, etc. Then the van started not always starting. Sometimes it would start, then shut off by itself shortly after starting. It got to the point where it was not easily starting 2-3 times a day. The weird electrical stuff would happen when stationary or in motion. The starting problem was while stationary. Sometimes it died when I put it in gear to move. Sometimes when driving, I felt like the car was giving itself more gas even though my foot had been taken off of the pedal. Took it to vw when it simply would not easily or reliably start anymore. They said the tipm module needed to be replaced. We just got it replaced. Cost us $924. 77!.

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/06/2015

Driving downhill, foot off accelerator. Abrupt loss of engine power followed by loss of power steering and braking. Vehicle under known recall and has been "fixed". This incident has now occurred 3-4x since the recall fix, nearly identical circumstances approx every 1-3 months. Vw kept the vehicle for > 2 weeks, unable to identify the problem, vehicle was returned to me without any new attempts at fixing it. I will be returning it to vw and taking it out of service.

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/25/2015

The engine will crank but will not start on most occasions. When the engine does start it will shut off after several seconds. To get the engine to start at all the ignition has to be turn to the on position for two to three seconds and then turned to the start position. When the engine does remain on, it has shut off in traffic on two separate occasions. I know that this is a Chrysler manufactured/Volkswagen marketed vehicle. I have read that Chrysler has recalled several of its minivans due to the same problems and that the issue is with the tipm part. Does this recall extend to Volkswagen as well?.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 04/21/2015

I went to pass a vehicle at 65mph and the accelerator pedal did not release, the van hit 80-mph before I popped it in neutral and then back into drive to correct the issue. Hitting the brakes had no effect on the unintended acceleration. . Read more...

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 03/16/2015

On several occasions starting in March 2015, my 2010 vw Routan (manufactured in July 2010 by Chrysler) simply shuts off while driving the vehicle. When this occurs, I have no engine power, no power steering and no power brakes and am concerned about personal safety. I bought the van new in September 2010 for my wife, but no longer allow her to drive it as I am afraid it will shut down on her (it requires a bit of arm strength to pull the vehicle over and hopefully I am not rear-ended before being able to do so). I understand there is now a recall on the ignition for 2010 Routans, but my VIN does not appear to be within the window indicated for the recall even though the date of manufacture is within the window. I am not sure if the ignition switch is the cause of the problem, but the symptoms sound similar. Also, there are times when I turn the ignition key to start the motor but it will not actually engage the starter. The radio will come on, but there is no impact on the starter. After several attempts while sitting there, I can get the switch to actually work. I love the van, but have become scared of these issues. If the van ever shuts down when I am on the highway, the speeds will be treacherous. I have searched the internet and found others with similar complaints. I very much see this as a safety concern and want you to be aware of these issues. I sincerely appreciate any assistance you can provide.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 02/12/2015

I just entered the expressway. The engine started revving between 5-6 rpms, and the car was going 40. I noticed smoke coming from the back of the car, so I went to the next exit (2 blocks) and got off the expressway. The car was smoking. A passerby told me to get out of the car because of the smoke and liquid pouring out of the car. I then had to call the fire department because vw's roadside assistance wouldn't come until the fire department cleared the car to be towed. Finally, it was towed to the dealership. They determined that it was broken heater hoses and water pipes. Had I been in the fast lane when this happened, a serious crash could have occurred, as the smoke and revving began so suddenly, as did the slow car speed.

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

While driving my car, on multiple occasions now, the engine has shut off. The car remains on but the gas and steering do not work. The most recent time I had to quickly pull to the side as I was driving 35mph. I see that there was a recall for our make and model but when we're calling vw, they are saying it did not effect my specific vehicle.

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 10/15/2014

The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Routan. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, the vehicle started vibrating and the speed fluctuated independently. Also, the vehicle started to jerk and the contact lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a faulty sensor. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred on several occasions. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/27/2014

My key has been sticking in the ignition intermittently. Usually I have to turn the car back on turn the wheel, put it in gear and back in park, one or both of those things usually frees the key from the acc mode and allows me to remove it from the ignition. Today, I went to start the van and it is dead. Click. That is all it does. It does not appear the battery is dead, as the headlights and interior lights come on, the door dings, the mileage comes up, etc. There is a recall for something involving the ignition, but I have not been informed by vw yet as to a repair. I have sent in four prior complaints concerning this vehicle. I bought it used 7/2010 from carmax. It is unreliable and dangerous to have on the road. The entire brake system needs repaired every 7,000 miles following a sudden caliper seize, the van has numerous electrical issues that cause the car to just stop. One day I heard it running in my garage. I cant rule out one of my children messing with the fob, however, I have difficulty with the remote starter myself? (click2x&hold) I do not feel safe with this vehicle. I will not drive my children long distances or travel roads with them that require speeds over 40 mph. The van died while I was driving it 55-60mph on a busy highway, the vw dealership said it was not a recall issue. I clearly see it is a recall issue for some Routans, my receipt reads exactly as the side door harness recall is stated. I will be working with vw to request reimbursement, however, I don't feel that is good enough. There is a major problem here. I am lucky myself or my children have not been hurt. In hindsight of the gm ignition recall, I would be amiss to think a car company has my best interest in mind. I am hoping my government does.

66 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/11/2014

My wife took our 2009 vw Routan minivan to a vw dealership today to repair inoperable electronic door locks and faulty headlights (seperate complain filed), at which time she was informed of an ignition problem recall. The ignition part was placed on order and my wife was told the part had to be shipped from out of state and should arrive within five days. My wife asked, and was informed the vehicle was safe to operate; however, I looked up the recall when I got home from work and discovered the recall specifically states the engine can shut of during operation due to added weight from other keys or key rings on the vw key fob. According to the recall, dealership and maintenance personnel are supposed to inform customers to remove added keys from the fob. My wife had keys on her fob which the dealer mechanic had in his hand during inspections, but the mechanic never informed her of the risk, and allowed her to jeapordize her life by driving the vehicle without the required safety information.

67 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/29/2014

Vehicle completely turns off while driving, losing all control, use of brakes and steering. It has been 4 weeks since the recall was sent out and there is still no fix available, and the company can not give any other information besides they are working on it.

68 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/29/2014

Car battery is in good shape because I recently replaced it with a new one. The problem is occasionally I try to start the vehicle and it will not start when the electronic throttle control light is blinking but if I use my car keys to lock and unlock the car, then the electronic throttle control light will go off and car will start. Last week it occurred two times and I took the car to Volkswagen dealership but they told me, the diagnostic test is not showing any code and hence there is no problem with my car but I think there is a problem because I have experienced this problem five times in total. They requested I tow my car to them the next time it occurs to see if the code can be determined but I still not comfortable because I don't know what is coming next.

69 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/19/2014

Driving from indiana to phoenix the van began to shake violently while braking downhill on mountainous terrain. Temperature gauge went up over 200 and van smelled warm. Van did not overheat and problem subsided once back on level ground. Purchased van used on July 10 2012 with approx 25,000 miles.

70 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/04/2014

I have been experiencing the engine dying suddenly while I am driving. There is no warning or engine lights. Everything turns off including the power steering. This is terrifying. I took my vehicle to the dealer, I have an extended warranty. After keeping it two days, they claim that nothing is wrong with the car. I tried to explain the danger involved in my car suddenly losing power but the dealer states there is nothing they can do about it.
