Volvo S80 owners have reported 98 problems related to electrical system (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volvo S80 based on all problems reported for the S80.
The headlight system malfunctioned. It is available for inspection upon request. The low beam failure error occurred, which led to an inspection of the headlight system. The wiring inside the headlight assembly failed. The insulation on bulb wires is crumbling everywhere and causing short circuits from exposed wire conductors. This causes a safety issue because the bulbs stop functioning, impairing visibility of the car, visibility of the road, and disabling motion intent lights like the turn signals. Bare wires touching can also lead to overheating and fires or failures of the headlight electrical system. Humidity may damage the exposed wires and cause bulb failure or wire overheating. The wiring harnesses may also overheat. The wire insulation problem was confirmed by an independent service center on multiple cars of this model.

The air bag warning randomly popped up on my screen. They will not deploy if I get into a wreck. Non working air bag. I also have issues that come and go with the electrical component. Sometimes my door won't open, sometimes my seats won't move, and my license plate light is out due to something electrical. My gas tank spits gas back at me and makes weird noises sometimes.

The warning, charging failure service urgent is displayed the service engine light comes on. Several mechanics have not be able to repair. The front passenger seat belt is not stable to fasten properly. The tmps has yet another warning, inoperable.
Warning light on dashboard indicated right front headlamp out. Repair shop removed and replaced original component with new component. Internal inspection of light assembly revealed missing insulation(photos attached) on wiring harness causing a short circuit which also ruined the headlight igniter and control module. Shop stated that this issue is not uncommon with Volvo lighting systems. The current concern is the same condition is present in the left(driver) headlight and could cause a short and fire within the headlight assembly. Correspondence with Volvo resulted in no resolution of the issue and lack of concern for the reliability of installed components or possible safety concern for their product.

Theres a recent recall on the airbags of the 1999 S80 Volvo that we need our airbags replaced because its a hazard that can lead up to death. Also the electricity keeps zapping down from the car creating no starts or very poor driving, I almost was stranded because the car seems like it wanted to shut down one night I was getting off work, I hit full gas and it only gave me 3 mph and also when I made a right turn one night from work I feel the wheel feel like its coming apart from the inside or loosening I dont know what it is but it feels and sounds rough.

Driver door lock and latch mechanism seems to glitch out, leaving door impossible toclose . It tends to reactivate after driving for a few minutes with the door open warning light on. Weather doesnt seem to effect it like frozen locks. This issue has happened on randomly even on 50 degree days. It seems to be a common issue on the Volvo forums.

Takata recall" frist I called Volvo to inquire about recalls referening to the cooling system and the fuel pump the first lady I spoke with informed me this problem was under recalls and to take my car to get it serviced at the nearest dealer after taking my car to the dealer at 7:15am 4hours later after I called them first they now are saying that there isn't anything they can do with my car and they do not know who told me that false information. On top of all of this my car accelerates by itself lucky when it happens I hurry and push the brakes and the car dosent start up once turning the key even the guy say that's always been a problem. Based on how expensive this car is it seem there wouldn't be many problems with it or it seem that they would at least try todo something about the false information over all I will never buy another Volvo again!.

Takata recall the dashboard lights are not working at all. I just bought the car 2 months ago. Without the dashboard lights not working, it is very dangerous. I can not see how many mph I am going, and can't tell how much gas I have. Also at night, it is completely black in the dashboard and is very dangerous. This happens day and night. It happened as soon as I drove it off the lot. I called the dealer, and they did not want to take care of it. I purchased the car at michele motors, located on rt. 88, brick, NJ.
I was driving and my car lights and all the electronic stop working and turn off.
Switchblade/smartkey design continually shuts off vehicle in traffic when other keys are on the ring. Unsafe!.

Broken key can cause vehicle key switch to turn off unexpectedly while driving. The following is my interaction with Volvo, I have heard nothing from them since March. Customer by css web (dick fxxxxx) (03/19/2014 08:08 pm) after this vehicle's engine shut off several times while zipping along the interstate I resolved to figure out why and found the following condition would cause it to do so. I have a number of keys on the keyring and the spring which normally holds the key out straight from its holder is broken. When the key/holder is inserted back side up and then rotated to the run position the body of the holder eventually folds half way in against the column, with the other keys on the ring pulling it downwards. After enough bumps in the road the downward force rotates the key out of the run position. If the key/holder is inserted buttons side up this does not occur. Thought you'd like to know about this scenario before the gm litigators get wind of it.
I've had this problem for months now. The car shuts down and won't restart! I been taking off the battery and letting it sit over night, then putting cables back on to get it to restart! today I drove it for a mile and parked it and while it was running it shut down again! most of the time it shuts down when I'm driving and I lose brake control!.
Driver information module (dim) originally started dropping out and returning multiple times during a trip, now it is going out completely after roughly 15 miles, no cluster gauges or dash lights. Will come back on after cool down time of roughly 2-3 hours. No speedometer, tach, gas or temp gauges. Signal lights work, but no dash indicators.
Instrument cluster panel faulty, unable to detect vehicle speed, blinker operation, gas in fuel tank remaining,.

While driving my 2000 Volvo S80 about 20-25mph all the sudden lost power to all my gauges, dashboard lights, power windows, & power locks. The radio was the only device that was working. The following message was displayed srs-airbag service urgent. I have noticed a diffrence on my brake pedal that it does not respond as well as it use too there is a short delay when stepped on. Before this incident I had noticed a clicking noise on the driver side when a came to a stop like a relay chattering & also the ac would come on when the car is turned off. At times the following message would appear frequently alarm needs servicing. I don't know what is causing this malfuncions but if its a manufacturing problem Volvo should be liable on correcting the problem & provide us with a safe vehicle.
The contact owns a 1999 Volvo S80. While stationary, the vehicle leaked fuel onto the ground. Wallace Volvo in stuart, florida diagnosed the vehicle as having a mass air flow failure. The vehicle was repaired by don imports auto service in vero beach, florida. In addition, while driving 2 mph, the vehicle caught fire underneath the driver's seat. A police report was filed. The contact extinguished the fire with the assistance of a neighbor. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to wallace Volvo in stuart, florida. The vehicle was not destroyed. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage and VIN were unknown.
I was driving along a busy street, when I came to a stop sign the brakes where hard to push, when I finally stopped the car, you could still fill the car trying to move forward I took my foot of the brakes and the car sped up on it's on reaching close to 40 mph again I was barely able to stop the car do to a stiff brake pedal. I put the car in park and shut it off, once I restarted the car it was sputtering and wouldn't idle correctly every time I put the car in gear it would shut off now I'm getting an error message that says service engine system urgent.
First the high beam headlights could not be dimmed and constantly remained on creating problems for oncoming drivers. Next the high beams could not be turned on creating visibility issues when driving the car. The component that failed is the central electronic module ( cem ) . When the cem failed it also burned out the turn signal board. Both the cem and the turn signal board needed to be replaced with new units.
Slowly driving on a road in neighborhood and was signalling to make a left turn and all of a sudden the signal light stopped and the whole car just shut down. No electical or auto operating at all. Automobile totally stalled and would not start. Car was entering an intersection necessitating me getting out and pushing the auto back behind the stop sign. Auto would not start again and had to be towed. My regular repair person tried to get it operating but could not and was again towed to a Volvo dealer who took 4 days to fix. My issue is if this had occurred at night making a turn or just driving I would have had an accident.
Placed my vehicle in reverse to pull back out of my garage & my car accelerated out of control. I was forced into a parking sign that scratched and dented my left rear bumper. In the last 2 1/2 months related problems continue where my car surges & also experiences sudden & unexpected reduced performance. When I accellerate my car feels like it is stuck in gear & won't respond. It is a safety hazzard!! again!!! this duplicates the same electronic throttle module problem I had in August of 2005. After taking my car in 4 times (not knowing what the problem was), it was finally determined it is the etm again. Volvo performed a computerized upgrade on the etm & then it was finally recalled in January of 2006. It is another safety hazard ready to happen. Volvo should have in the beginning & should at this time be made to replace the faulty etm!.
2006 Volvo S80. Consumer states unexplained engine behavior. The consumer stated the engine suddenly stalled. An engine immobilized message appeared on the dashboard. The dealer was unable to find any irregularities. The dealer stated it was probably electronic interference.
The cars automatic transmission will shift to the reverse position without giving any warning under the normal driving condition in its drive position. When it shifts to reverse by itself on the freeway I notice the nose of the car will drop lower and if my foot press on the gas paddle the car will act as braking and engine is making noise. I notice on the dashboard and shifter the gear sign indication is toggle in between d and r, when I press on the gas paddle the sign will change to r and as I release my foot off the gas paddle the sign will change back to d. The car is completely out of control I almost got in a major accident, luckily I was trained on manual transmission for my driving lesson, so I put the car to n and shift back to d for the 1st 3 times I switch back to d the gear indication sign is still show r when I put to d only on the 4th try its return back to normal condition. When all this happen I was claiming a hill on I-580 before I-680 junction just pass hayward, CA. Try to imaging driving at 65mph on a hill and transmission swift to reverse the car will drop from 65mph to 10mph very fast and the cars behind me almost crash into me. According to my mechanic the car suppose to switch to safe mode and transmission should stay in 3rd gear. It is strange the car think its malfunction is normal and did not engage to safe mode. My mechanic diagnoses the car and tells me the problem trace to a neutral switch (pnp switch) inside the transmission. And after contact nearest dealer fremont motor cars the parts department confirm that the pnp switch is build inside the transmission and would need a new transmission. The gm-sourced 4t65ev/gt transmissions usually show symptoms of failure by suddenly slipping while in gear. There has not been a recall for this issue, but the faults are widely known and documented. This car is still drivable its not bad, if dont acted up. It still thinks it has no problem at all which is very dangers.
The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S80. When the contact arrived home, she noticed smoke under the hood of the vehicle. Flames were present soon after. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. Everything under the hood was melted. A firefighter stated that it appeared to be an electrical fire. A report was filed. There were no injuries. The contact stated that she will call Volvo and file a claim. The failure mileage was 125,300.
Took car to get throttle body clean and it did not resolve issues with car.
The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S80. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact noticed smoke and pulled the vehicle off the road. He opened the hood and noticed flames. He was unsuccessful at extinguishing the fire and called the fire department, who stated that the cooling fan caused an electrical fire. The contact's mechanic informed him of a recall regarding the cooling fan. The VIN and NHTSA campaign id number were unknown. The failure and current mileages were 78,000.
My 2000 S80 t6 stalls in traffic and loses power while driving. Whenever I stop at a traffic light, I'll have to step harder on the accelerator in order to avoid the vehicle behind me from hitting my car. Sometimes it jerks so bad I feel that engine may fall off. There's no engine light on or anything. I have called Volvo and was told the problem is etm but has been replaced on my car according to their records. I have taken the car to the dealership and had different components tested out and fixed but that did not solve the problem.
