In oct 04, we purchased a Volvo 2000 S80, VIN yv1ts90d7y1066690. We were satisfied with the performance of the car for the most part. Shortly after we purchased the Volvo, the check engine light came on, and after having the codes check, the oxygen sensor needed to be replaced. Since the car was running smooth and w/agreement of my mechanic, I did not have the os replaced. In March 2006, another msg came on the msg ctr, urgent transmission service req'd. After having the problem check out, I was told the transmission needed to be completely overhauled. My transmission overhaul cost $1300. The problems with the transmission, according to transmission technician, was with the overdrive clutch hub and two shift solenoids were defective. After the repair the car was running great. Another problem came up on the msg ctr, stating urgent engine service req'd. We had driven less than the 100 mi when another msg appeared. After checking w/my mechanic and another owner of a 2000 S80 Volvo, who had experienced the same problem, it was determined we had a problem with the etm (elect throttle mod), which was a known issue with Volvo. L. After more investigating, I found out that the warranty on the etm had been extended to 200,000 miles, my car had a little over 125,000 miles. I scheduled my car for repair at my local Volvo dealership, tim marburger Volvo of bristol, TN, for repair under a warranty problem. My car was repaired/upgraded to fix the issue with the etm. My Volvo is currently running much better than it's run since we purchased the vehicle. Once the msg came on regarding the engine needing service, the performance was marginal at best, fortunately we were not in a situation that could have caused an accident, that his happen in traffic, who knows what might have happened. It seems that Volvo knows they have problems with the etm, why haven't they done something to notify their Volvo owner of this problem??? this is provided for your info/action.

I purchased my Volvo S80 not even 1 year ago and I am experiencing problems with my car losing acceleration in traffic and idling wildly. The problem has become so severe that at one point at a complete stop, my car surged forward and hit the car in front of me! thank goodness there was no damage or injuries to myself or to the car involved. I took the vehicle to the dealership and was informed the problem lies with the throttle. However, Volvo refuses to issue a recall and hides behind the "warranty" song and dance even though they agree there is a problem with the throttles in their vehicles. I did much research (or so I thought) before purchasing my vehicle. I chose Volvo because they advertise the fact that they manufacture one of the safest cars on the market. My wife owns a Volvo s60 and has had similar problems. I fear for the safety of my wife and 6 year old son. I plan to get rid of this dangerous vehicle first chance I get.

My 2001 Volvo S80 died in traffic as I was leaving the post office in texarkana, TX. It would not restart and I let it roll back to try and get partially out of the roadway. It was towed to the Volvo dealership in shreveport, la. The service manager called and told me it was the electronic throttle modulator and would have to be replaced. He called back later and told me the electronic module in the gas pedal had a fault and also needed to be replaced. In total the bill was over $1500. 00 I researched online and found that this was a high failure rate part and that California had filed a lawsuit to force Volvo to do a recall and also reimburse owners who had already paid to have this problem fixed. I called Volvo and talked to donna, a customer service rep, who said she would talk to the regional manager to see is there was anything they could do for me. The car was repaired and after a week of phone calls back and forth, of course Volvo said they could do nothing to help me with the expense.
Re:1999, s-80,t-6 Volvo. Saw an ap article in my local paper today re complaint investigation. I experienced virtually all of the same problems cited in the article. Namely stall w/o warning, from a stop, step on gas and barely would move(like slipping clutch on a manual transmission) , had numerous incidents where I felt vulnerable and unsafe in traffic, loss of power steering etc. Sounds very much like these other complaints. At same time I had lots of incorrect "readouts" on dash panel. I complained to dealer who said this all could be related to the abs control module which was replaced at cost of $825. 00. Old part was not given back to me. Of note is that during the same repair a belt was replaced which they did give back to me, but not the module. Mileage was only 61,376. This module did solve the problem however I am now getting another goofy readout that dealer says could be a defective module. Current mileage is 61779. I did not think that failures of this type should occur at such low mileage. At the time I asked if there was a recall for this and was told no. I am not happy with this situation and ii do suspicion that a defect exists.
The contact owns a 1999 Volvo S80. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle began to slow down and the abs and engine indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the trollis system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred two weeks later. The vehicle was taken to the dealer again and they stated that the central module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle needed to be taken back to the dealer for further inspection. The failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 97,000. Updated 1/8/09 the ball joint needed to be replaced, the heating system, throttle systems, engine cooling fan and the master cylinder all failed. The vehicle would accelerated on its own. The vehicle stalled on several occasions. The steering made a noise when it was turned. The dealer lubricated the steering. The dealer stated the vehicle needed an O2 sensor. The ignition switch was replaced. The inner tie rods were replaced. 01/14/09.
Had taken my S80 to the Volvo dealership a number of times complaining of engine hesitation and stalling. Volvo"s diagnostic computer system "vadis" output codes clearly showed default codes indicating a faulty module. The service manager at this steadfastly refused to replace the module "due to cost". I warned him of the potential consequences of trying to operate this vehicle with unreliable engine firing and the associated "stalling" that occurs without warning. I expressed my concerns to him about the danger that this problem presented for me and other vehicles which I had experienced during previous "stallings". Unfortunately, after tremendous research and a number of phone calls before I could bring this info to bear to force the dealership to honor their warranty I experienced a "stalling" event while driving on the expressway which lead to a single car accident, resulting in a total loss of my car.
Car ran rough rpms up & down felt like car would stall if foot did not stay on gas pedal. Did not feel safe driving because of potential to stall at any time. Took to dealer who replaced the electronic throttle module (at our expense). Now we are reading that Volvo has reversed its position--but only in sweden not north America. Now car is running rough again and rpms are sticking high, then dropping, do not feel comfortable driving. Volvo says too bad.
Computer failed excessively resulting in intermittent working of sunroof/ air conditioning, and power windows. Also vehicle stalled frequently.
While driving 65 mph lost steering ability and engine completely shut down. Took vehicle to the dealer, and problem has not been remeded as of yet. Dealer statesdthat it was a glitch in computer. Please provide any further information.
