3 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/27/2013

I own a 2001 xc 70 Volvo which I just bought with 133900 miles last Friday April 26, 2013. The dealer showed me the maintenance records including a 3 month old California safety inspection report. On April 27, 2013, I was driving on a downhill stretch when all of a sudden, the car engine lost power, kicked like it wanted to jump ahead of me, all indicator lights flashed, and the car stalled and shut down rendering the brake and steering system inoperable. I had no means to control the car as it rolled down hill. I engaged the reverse gear causing the vehicle to stop. I called dealer right away. He told me to bring the vehicle to his mechanic the following Monday on 04/29/2013. The mechanic inspected the vehicle and test-drove it and could not find any problems with the vehicle. He performed a diagnostic computer test and got an error message indicating an air intake problem. He asked me to bring the vehicle the following morning so he can test drive it more and find out more. While driving home, the problem recurred again, this time in the middle of a freeway. It was dangerous. . . Luckily I was in the far right lane, so immediately I coasted to the side, with my hazards lights on and pulled to the side where the vehicle stopped itself. Imagine driving 80mph on a California freeway, and all of a sudden, the vehicle loses power, the engines kick jumps, and without your input, attempts to engage a higher gear but then stalls and immediately shuts down and the brakes and the steering wheel jams. . That is not safety. As I await for the mechanic to address this issue, I am filing this complaint because this is a safety issue. A car that passes a safety inspection test should not be abruptly shutting down in the middle of traffic and render the brake system and steering wheel inoperable.

The contact mentioned that the check engine, ecm and the limp home mode warning messages illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle had surpassed the statute of limitations for repairs under NHTSA campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 156,000 and the current mileage was 158,000.

6 Car Stall problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

I bought this Volvo used w/ 120k miles. I saw records of major work done at the dealer just previous to 100,000 and figured it would be good for another 100k. At 131k, it began constantly stalling and lunging. I did a tiny bit of research and learned of the recall. I took it to the dealer and they tried to charge me 200 to do nothing other than read the codes and tell me the etm software had already been updated, and that the mass airflow sensor was bad. I replaced the mafs to no change.

7 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/07/2006

2001 Volvo V70 surges while underway, surges and stalls at idle, goes into reduced performance mode (20 mph or less). Car runs normally when cold (up to 1 mile after starting in morning), then begins to surge and fail. Need to pull over to shoulder, stop engine for 3 minutes, and restart. If engine is stopped for less than 3 minutes, it restarts in 20 mph mode. This has happened daily for 2 weeks. Independent mechanic replaced ignition coil based on obd code, but problem recurred the next day. Have appointment with Volvo service department 11/22/06.

8 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 08/08/2006

I own a 2001 Volvo V70 <turbo> . . And have had repeated experiences with the vehicle either stalling while in gear and / or "surging" forward while at a stop with the brake pedal depressed . . . The vehicle has been brought to an authorized Volvo repair shop and to the dealer for these problems a minimum of 4 times upon the return of my vehicle to me <after having work done under campaign 155> the vehicle exhibited the same problems . . The most recent event having taken place on 08. 08. 06 at this most recent incident I had my two granddaughters in my vehicle and I believe that this event put all our lives in danger . . This is definitely a safety issue / hazard ! I <yesterday> placed a call to the dealership <bozzani Volvo in covina, CA> only to be given the "run-around" from jon, tony, and gloria . . . Jon burnham suggested that I let them have my vehicle to drive until the "problem" is duplicated . . Gloria masterly <a service advisor> said I should not take my car to my local Volvo approved repair shop . . . That I should have it towed to them, instead <which I have already had done <having it towed> both thru asc at no charge . . . And at my expense numerous times> tony rivas told me that he had to make a call and that he would get back to me . . . No one got back to me . . . Nor has anyone <as of nearly 12 noon, today < returned a call to me . . . I have been made aware of the existing <and well known> issues with the magnate marelli etm and am appalled at the devil may care attitude that Volvo is taking towards this whole affair I bought Volvo <this being our third> because of their reputation for safety ! I am now afraid to drive my car . . . And am receiving no assistance from any Volvo advisors or representatives I am nearly 80 years old . . And would hate to lose what years I do have left to an avoidable problem which may very well take my life <as well as others, possibly>.

9 Car Stall problem of the 2002 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/03/2006

Volvo 2002 V70 wagon stalled while in drive on I-5. Fortunately I was able to get to the shoulder despite losing steering. Similar incident occurred in 2004 and the dealer cleaned the throttle. Obviously this correction was not permanent.

10 Car Stall problem of the 2003 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/09/2006

: the contact stated the vehicle stalled while driving 10-40 mph on seven occasions. There was no warning prior to the stalling and the vehicle restarted immediately after each incident. The vehicle has been inspected by a service dealer twice. The first time the dealership flushed out the air conditioner in an attempt to remedy the problem, but the remedy offered was ineffective. The dealer was unable to determine the cause of the problem or offer any other remedies when the vehicle was returned a second time for inspection.

11 Car Stall problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/14/2006

I purchased this car, a 1999 Volvo v-70 station wagon, in 2002. The car intermittently and repeatedly stalls in traffic in addition to randomly accelerating and decelerating on its own so that driving is hazardous. Car has been serviced numerous times for these problems and most of the work has been on electronic throttle system. Problems may appear to be fixed for a short time but not really fixed because stalling and unexpected acceleration/deceleration begin again. Car has problem unique to it in that it fails to produce computer codes regarding stalling or etm failure, and because car fails intermittently, except for one mechanic, all others who have serviced the car have failed to experience the stalling and random acceleration/deceleration first hand. What to do with a car that reliably fails intermittently, fails to fail when the mechanic needs it to fail to be able to fix it and produces no computer codes as to why it is failing? on 7 April, 2006, I took car to Volvo of richardson, richardson TX to service the problem of the car stalling repeatedly in the previous few days. They upgraded the etm software but the car continued to stall and stutter in traffic. In fact, it seemed the stuttering and shuttering (near stalls) were worse. I had the car towed back to dealer and asked about the repairs under the extended warranty as per NHTSA action: ea05021. Service director for dealer refused to replace etm under extended warranty saying they would not be reimbursed if they couldn't reproduce the stalling etc. Likewise, at Volvo customer care (1-800- 458-1552), "bart" refused to authorize repairs covered under extended warranty of ea05021. The number of failures/incidents of car stalling and unexpectedly accelerating and decelerating are too numerous to count anymore. The car reliably stalls intermittently and repeatedly. Last incident of stalling was 14 April 2006 when the car stalled four times in traffic.

Surging, fouling spark plugs, hesitating, stalling, cuts off while driving and locks up.

13 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/20/2005

My 2001 Volvo V70 xc with 44,000 miles began racing and stalling when I came to a stop; dashboard message appeared indicating need for urgent engine system service. I immediately took it to service center where they had to replace the throttle body. Service center indicated they have seen a rash of this problem.

14 Car Stall problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/01/2005

When I begin to brake and the car slows, it will simply cut off. It is getting progressively worse and cuts off about one-half the time I begin to come to a complete stop. I had this same problem several years ago, and it reached the point where it stalled at as I was driving in a roundabout at approximately 10 mph. I took the car to my mechanic and it was repaired. Now, however, the stalling failure is recurring. Although the field below requires a specific date, this problem is ongoing.

15 Car Stall problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/29/2005

My name is felipe stevenson and I currently own a 1999 Volvo V70. On August 1, I heard on the news that NHTSA was investigating a potential engine problem with Volvos. This was the same day I was taking my car to a local Volvo dealer for its 150,000 miles service and one of the problems I was planning to report was that the car stalls occasionally when I am driving or just looses speed. I have reported this problem in the past two years to at least three Volvo dealers in the new york/new jersey metropolitan area and I have been told in all occasions that the problem could not be replicated when conducting the service. The stalling problem began in 2003 and has happened 12 times to date. In one occasion I was driving at 50 miles an hour in a highway when this happen. My wife and my child were in the car then. We were all unharmed. When I took my car to the Volvo dealer on August 1, I got a call for the service person and I was told that the throttle of the car had an internal fault and needed to be replaced for almost $1,000. I was also told that this was the reason why my car was stalling or loosing speed. However, knowing that the car model is currently under investigation for a similar problem, I decided not to fix it until the outcome of the investigation is known. In my opinion, this problem exists with the Volvo models -- including mine - and encourage the NHTSA to pursue the investigation . Thank you.

16 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/20/2005

On several incidents over the past 9 months the car has stalled on the highway. It looses power and everything shuts down. Once I stop it restarts. Also, there are times when the car will not "shut off" completely but the engine will loose its power and then the rpm will rev back up suddenly. Volvo has attached a "black box" to the engine and as a result replaced the transmission. The problem went away for about a month and it is back. The last incident was July 20th.

17 Car Stall problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/15/2005

Vehicle stalled/died, and lost power due to throttle body failure.

18 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

Consumer stated the vehicle stalled while driving without any warning signs. The electronic throttle module (emt) was replaced, but this did resolve the problem. Contact tried to notify the manufacturer but did not succeed. Contact called the Volvo dealership and they were aware of this problem. The problem was worked on before she purchased the vehicle.

19 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/22/2005

We purchased our 2001 Volvo V70 station wagon 12 March and have since had the car into the dealer 3 times for problems with the transmision. It stalls and tends to not gain speed. We had it serviced 2 times and this last time that stated they replaced it. We are still experiencing the same problem with the engine though.

20 Car Stall problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/16/2005

We have a 1999 V70 Volvo station wagon that about 1 year ago began losing power and/or stalling without warning while I was driving on the highway. It would re-start if I was able to gun it and get the car moving. Volvo replaced the throttle system and the issue seemed to be resolved. In may 2005, the engine again began to lose power as I decelerated while driving on the highway (e. G. When approaching a toll or in traffic) and then would completely stall once I exited the highway onto the local roads and was driving at a slower speed. It appeared to happen more frequently when I had a full tank of gas and/or the air conditioner was on. It would re-start fairly easily. The Volvo dealer where we purchased the car (summit, NJ) looked at the car in may and could find nothing wrong, as the computer did not register any failure; they returned the car to us as is. It continued to happen periodically and eventually would not re-start. On Monday, June 13 I had it towed to a local repair shop in jersey city who could find nothing wrong; they returned the car to us as is. On Friday, June 17, we then brought it to another Volvo dealer (montclair, NJ) where three mechanics looked at it over the course of one week and could find nothing wrong, again citing that the computer did not register any failures. It has happened a few more times, so now it is at another local repair shop (garwood, NJ) where the mechanic can find nothing wrong. I have not driven the car since mid-June as I have two small children and do not feel safe driving a car that can stall without warning in highway traffic and be slammed from behind.

21 Car Stall problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 02/14/2005

Stalling in 2000 Volvo V70. Sudden loss of power and power steering assist. Failure created dangerous traffic obstruction as disabled vehicle blocked roadway. Repairing mechanic diagnosed defect in electronic throttle body and stated this is a well-known product defect in these vehicles.

22 Car Stall problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 09/20/2004

The electronic throttle control module in my 2000 V70 Volvo wagon was defective. The car ran badly, missed and stalled - brakes and transmission shifting was also affected. The situation continued to happen while on an extended trip with no Volvo dealers within range. It took several trays for the dealer where I purchased the car to make the necessary repairs at a cost of about $900. 00. I feel that the company should reimburse me since I understand that this situation is under investigation.

23 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/19/2002

I began having trouble at about 22,500 miles in my new 2001 V70xc Volvo. I noticed the car ran rough and shifted erratically and stalled. Then I next had a significant experience with a sudden loss of power driving on the highway. I was out of town and was forced to have the car towed and obtain a rental car and accommodations. I had the car in and out of the shop with stalling problems as well as "intake" valve problems resulting in erratic shifting and rough running of this vehicle. It took several years and numerous trips to the dealership for repair. I recently had a very expensive repair done on the vehicle to resolve the problem. I submitted all my documentation to Volvo customer service as well as the bills and expenses incurred with this problem. By the time the issue was resolved my new car warranty had expired ( how timely!) the Volvo people were not willing to reimburse me for any of the repairs nor admit there was a problem with this model even though I had heard of other owners with similar problems.

24 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 09/16/2001

25 Car Stall problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/06/2000

1999 Volvo V70 developed a problem with the throttle body sensor resulting in the vehicle stalling. 26 Car Stall problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/23/2000

Incidence 1 of 7 similar. As reported on service invoice: c/s car stalls out while driving, making a u-turn, start right up. Check car for codes, access, no codes on any system. No codes on fuel system, check fuel pump connector under rear panel, all ok. Per above, though service dept couldn't find anything wrong, this incident was the 1st of 7 similar problems occurring later that ultimately lead to having the throttle body cleaned twice & then replaced twice. I will be reporting all the other subsequent incidents in sequence of occurrence on this NHTSA complaint site as well.
