Volvo V70 owners have reported 33 problems related to engine and engine cooling (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volvo V70 based on all problems reported for the V70.
In mid summer of 2021, my car overheated randomly without any warning driving down the interstate. I pulled off immediately and cut the car off but, it was already done. The radiator cracked as a result of the engine overheating. I had the car towed to my mechanic and he replaced the radiator. Since then I’ve been having a lot of check engine codes. It’s now may of 2022, my car is still using and going through a lot of coolant. There are no leaks in the coolant. My mechanic recently said that the radiator fan is malfunctioning which is popping the check engine and also probably making the car overheat. I contacted Volvo dealership after seeing the recall on the radiator fan for my year make and model but, they informed me there is no recall on my car via the VIN#. This week I’ve been watching not only the coolant level but also the fans…. My car has two fans on the front, one of which is not cutting on when it should be , the smaller one seems to be working fine. I think the same recall issue is also effecting my car but, Volvo is not helping me.

Througout this cars history (from the first year 20 + years ago through to today) the engine randomly cuts out without warning, though this happens when usally while declerating and braking to round a street corner. Once it cuts out, of course power steering and brakes are virtually inoperative. However, by simply putting in neutral and turning the key the care always immediately restarts.

I took my car to the dealer because it was not passing smog and had trouble for several years. So the smog dealer told me to take it to the dealer. I told the dealer that I was trying to pass smog, but the car had been driving very good in spite of the smog problem. They replaced everything that you can imagine at a cost of over 10,000 dollars which both of us spent in a two month period. But after they got it to pass smog I noticed another more serious problem, it would stop running in the middle of traffic. I told them about this new problem and they replaced the key and it still stopped on me 3 x on the freeway and streets. I returned the car going down the main streets for 2 hours and lift it with the company. Mckevitt Volvo in san leandro CA. They wanted to charge me but I told them my are did not have this problem until they worked on it! I need a working car and I am in dept as a result of their work. I am a 65 year old retired teacher but I can't afford this dept. 11.

My Volvo V70 was on a test drive by the mechanic before returning the vehicle to me after routine maintenance. The car had 59,800 miles. The engine caught fire allegedly due to an oil gasket defect. The vehicle was on a local road in wainscott, long island, new york.
Throttle body has ongoing issues with needing to be cleaned frequently. Car has rough idle, sputters and jumps without warning. This happens when the car is in motion as well as when stationary. The car suddenly loses power when it does this which could cause a fatal accident. Car has never been damaged.

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 Volvo V70-xc. The contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to move forward as the rpms increased. The check engine and ets warning lights illuminated. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 146,000. Oo.
Driving on freeway at 60 mph, vehicle motor quit- dash lights came on-was able to move to shoulder-where vehicle restarted in neutral then died again- since vehicle has died very often after driving with absoulutly no warning-very very dangerous- was told drive by wire problem- eltronic throttle control, electronic fuel regulator, pedal and or throttle sensors-any number of electric sensor problem--all of this is "drive by wire" unsafe design.

I just purchased about 2 months ago a 1998 Volvo V70 used on 4/3/2014 for 3000. 00 . The vehicle drove just fine up until two weeks ago where the transmission seems to be slipping. While I was riding on i695 and was going about sixty miles per hour when the car jerked and cut off, meaning blinking in and out of the electrical system along with the engine as I was pulling over on the shoulder, which is terribly unsafe. I assumed and thought Volvo's were great on miles and transmission so I didn't expect it to be having these type of issues. I am a first time Volvo purchaser and highly disappointed and it's to expensive for all the hassles. All of the minor issues were expected because of the vehicle being a used car. Also, I cannot even check the transmission fluid levels in order to see if all I need is some transmission fluid, the dipstick that leads to the transmission is stuck, as in I have tried pulling, twisting and turning but to no avail. After purchasing a 300 dollar key pad from the dealer I expect more from the manual and at least to be able to check all fluids on the vehicle. If these minor issues didn't evolve into major issues with my Volvo vehicle I would not have an issue. Yet the problem is that these minor issues are indeed causing major repairs which is simply unacceptable and causing unsafe driving hazardous situations that could indeed affect the life of myself and other drivers. Thank you very much for listen and hopefully directly addressing my concerns. With my foot on the brake, I put the car in reverse and suddenly the engine revs up and the car accelerates at a high rate. Luckily, my foot was on the brake and I could stop the car. I had to press down quite hard on the brake pedal. A couple of seconds after applying the brakes, the engine returns to a normal idle speed. This sudden acceleration has occurred three times over, approximately, the last six months. The most recent occurrence was today, August 21, 2014. I estimated the first occurrence was in February of 2014.

Transmission has had problems for about three years. We were traveling on the hwy and the car started shaking, then stopped. We had to have it towed to our mechanic. Needs new transmission and alternator which would cost more than it is worth. Our mechanic has seen a number of 2001s with problematic transmissions. We are very disappointed in Volvo for not fixing this problem. Now this beautiful car is sitting in our driveway unused.
The car is shifting hard and now wont shift at all mechanics say it needs a new transmission. So I email Volvo for help in regards to this issues with no helping response from them other than sorry here is a list of dealers near you that do service.
August 8, 2012 I am sending this complaint concerning the service I received on a recall for a 2000 v-70 Volvo, campaign# r115 ( vehicle speed ), NHTSA -campaign# o6v441000, action # eaq-5021. I scheduled an appointment with a Volvo dealership. I went to the scheduled appointment and left my vehicle to be serviced. I was called from the dealership and was told my car was ready for me to pick up. After driving my vehicle for about 15 min max. It began unfortunately with the same symptoms I previously was experiencing. I called the service department where I apparently had my car serviced for repair and was told by the manager that I would be responsible for another diagnosis, and that it was probably something else, since the recall service was done I decided to call the: Volvocars. Us telephone #, @ 1-800-458-1552. I thought for sure, I would receive the support I needed . I did not. I was told once again, I was responsible for the repair. Very upset, needless to say, I proceeded once again, and called the manager at the Volvo dealership. I expressed once again, my concern with the service performed. In addition to the service, I had some questions concerning the service invoice . They have yet to be answered. I have adolescent children who are passengers in my vehicle everyday, and we would so appreciate!!! our car serviced as it should be, please, this recall reads more than an upgrade. Apparently this upgrade was completed, I beg to differ. Thank you for your time and consideration in this very concerning matter, as I look forward to hearing from your office. At your most earliest convenience.
Lost power in traffic, had to drive 10 mph in limp mode in heavy traffic.
Transmission slips into lower gear when slowing down to turn a corner and then putting foot on accelerator. Volvo dealer recommends having body replaced at a cost of @2200 and it might not be the cure. Also, in June 2001 at 86,488 I had to have the left front strut mount, sway bar links and engine torque rod mount replaced. Updated 03/10/11.

Back in June of 2008 - on start up my 99 Volvo V70 - would rough idle, rev to 4000 and would not exceed 20 mph. The idle sounded like sneakers in a dryer. I took the car to my garage and was quoted $2000. 00 to replace the etm - I was told by my garage that the etm may still be under warranty. After speaking with Volvo USA - I was advised that this part was under warranty and I should bring to the nearest Volvo dealership. I did. Boston Volvo village - did a software update and after that reported no issues with the etm - they claimed cracked vacuum hoses were the problems. They replaced the hoses and return the car. The car broke down a day later - rev to 4000, rough idle, won't go over 20 mph - sneakers in washing machine sound. I brought the car back to boston Volvo village - this time they told me that I had an bad accelerator pedal - which was replace cost was $225. 00. The car broke down a third time - this time on a busy highway - I was able to pull off - but if not for some excellent driving by others on the road there would had been a 3 car pile up. Boston Volvo village towed the car back to their garage. One of their employees admitted to me that the emt was the problem - but that Volvo makes it impossible to replace the etm.
The contact owns a 2007 Volvo V70. While driving approximately 25-30 mph, the vehicle would suddenly turn off without warning. The vehicle would restart once stopped and placed in park. The vehicle was taken in for service three times. The first time the vehicle was taken to an auto shop to be serviced for the recall, and the last two times it was taken to the dealer; however, the failure could not be identified. The current mileage was 33,000 and failure mileage was 26,162.
I was in a 2001 Volvo xc 70, making a left turn when the engine suddenly cut off leaving me with no acceleration as I tried to cross a busy intersection. I had two kids in the car and thank god no one was coming the other way. The car then started to shudder and I turned it off.
On 14 oct 05 as I turned off a major interstate highway in richmond, va my 2001 Volvo V70 t-5 began running really rough and a red warning triangle illuminated and I received a message warning me that the engine was not operating properly. It cleared after I stopped and restarted the car and I was able to return half way to charlottesville before it started running rough again. It continued to cycle between normal operation and rough running until I reached the Volvo dealer in charlottesville. On 18 oct 05, the dealer, Volvo of charlottesville, informed me that I needed a new electronic throttle module and replaced it at a cost of $916. 32. I looked on the web to find out exactly what an etm is and discovered the case against Volvo concerning etm failures. This is a used car that I purchased in oct04 so I have no way of telling if this has happened before.
I was driving 65 miles per hour and my vehicle began to slow down. I got a "reduced performance" warning, and my speed reduced gradually. I took my car to the dealer and he stated that this was not a recall item eventhough I had heard of it happening to other Volvo owners on the news broadcast. This is unsafe and how can many people have the same problem.
This happened while driving our 2001 Volvo vxc70 station wagon. On a busy road, driving approximately 40 miles per hour, the car lost engine power and nearly caused a major accident. The power steering and brake systems failed and there was a great deal of difficulty to get the car out of traffic and to the side of the road. This was extremely dangerous! the reason this complaint is being filed is the knowledge that other complaints for this same problem have been filed with your agency. This problem should be the basis for a recall to address whatever fixes or changes are necessary to preclude any recurrence.
Caller stated that three times vehicle hadied while dr. It has happened each time about 5 weeks apart. Got it started again while its was rolling. Dealer and manufacturer have not been contacted yet.
1) electronic throttle module (etm) shuts down the gas pedal where you have no control on acceleration 2) etm shutdown could cause a major accident 3) replace the etm at $1100 the owners should have been notified under warranty to clean the etm.
After a change of oil at the dealership I drove 168 miles. When I tried to start the car the oil warning light went on. I tried to check the oil level and a burst of oil came out of the stick pit. I had the car towed back to the dealer. We waited three weeks for a part to replace the turbo, but the mechanic couldn't find oil pressure. Now they are asking for 2,700 dollars to open the engine and see what is the problem or 6 thousand to replace the engine. I had the warning light on two times before, first time I paid to replace some sealers, the second time they couldn't find the problem. (I complained about having to add oil) their answer was that after 100,000 miles is considered normal.
2001 V70 did not shift properly and clunked in and out of gear. Consumer was told that the stabilizer motor mount was faulty. The throttle body, cam shaft sensor and vacuum boost sensor needed to be replaced.
A sudden drop in power on freeways and city streets.
I read about your company in this past Sunday's philadelphia inquierer. The air conditioning in my Volvo no longer works, and I needed to replace the throttle body control. There are technical service bulletins on both of these items. I have not made the air conditioning repair yet because the estimate is $1600. I wrote Volvo a letter on 5/15/03 about the air conditioning problem & asked them to call me. They wrote me a letter dated 5/19/03 & essentially denied any responsibility. I replied on 6/5/03 & again asked that they call me, but they did not. I called Volvo on 7/8/03 and they said they would not change their position. In looking for the tsbs on my air conditioning problem, I also found one on a throttle control problem that I had previously replaced. There were definitely drivability problems with the throttle body before I had the repair made. The problem was once I started getting up to around 55-60 mph, the driving would hesitate. I originally thought it might be a transmission problem, as the problem drove similar to a transmission "slipping". They replaced the throttle body, not cleaned it like the TSB mentions. My feeling is that if these two items are design flaws, for which the design has since been corrected, then Volvo should repair my vehicle regardless of the fact that it was out of warranty. I bought my Volvo new on 3/16/2000 and it currently has 88,000 miles. The warranty was for four years/50,000 miles.
While pulling inside of the driveway, vehicle started smoking. Vehicle was on fire. Dealership was aware of problem. To date, the cause of fire is still undetermined. It appears the coolant over flow bottle exploded and some how set fire to the engine. Volvo wants to take no responsibility for the vehicle although it is still under warranty.
Failure of electronic throttle module assembly causing very poor drivable. Problem is intermittent and severe that the car can not safely be driven in traffic without a risk of accident. Brief chronology: I have a very early production 1999 Volvo V70xc. It had drivable problems since I bought it. Never was fixed. (supposedly) replaced etm the first time in ~ 2004, using part whose design was known to be faulty. Later did software update (campaign 155). Drivable improved slightly, but was never correct. Replacement module is now failing. Car can not be driven safely. Engine runs poorly, rpm limited to < 2000, always in "limp home mode". You are aware (I believe) that there is a recall/replacement campaign underway for this part. However, the replacement part has the same design flaw as the original. (I am already on a "supposedly" replaced module). Volvo is pretending to honor an extended warranty while either: 1) changing the module's software to postpone or hide the actual (mechanical) failure mechanism. 2) replacing a failed module with one having the same flawed design which has the same potential for failure as before. This results in a serious potential safety issue being quite likely to occur to a customer like myself in the future. Worse yet, this is occurring just as a number of the vehicles are nearing the end of the extended warranty. The end result of this is they leave a serious driveability problem unsolved, and duck the actual problem by using a software update to get the customer just past the warranty period. In conclusion, they are continuing to supply unreliable and unsafe parts under the guise of having provided a safe, reliable, and warranted repair. They need to be forced to: issue a full recall for all vehicles using the current etm design, announce a full recall for all cars using this design, and supply only a re-designed etm as part of all future repairs.
Our Volvo had the exact same ignition issues as have been called out in the recent gm ignition recall. Our car would mysteriously turn off while driving for no apparent reason. This happened many times, luckily with any accidents. We brought the car in to Volvo numerous times for service, but they could never find the cause of the problem, other than to suggest that perhaps our key ring was too heavy. We never resolved the issue. As I read about the gm issues it was exactly what we experienced with our car. Just thought somebody might want to know.
