I have a 2001 Volvo V70 xc wagon. The car was revving high for a while when shifting gears, I took it to the dealership, and they told me there wasn't a problem. About a month or so later the etm failed. I was being left stranded at freeway off ramps, and green lights when the car would suddenly die. It's a miracle I wasn't rear-ended! after a terrible experience trying to get the dealership to honor the etm warranty, (they only cleaned the etm they did not replace it-saying it wasn't bad enough!), a month has passed and now my transmission has failed! the dealership gave me a $5300 estimate for replacement as it is unrepairable! I took it to our regular mechanic, and he told me the transmission failure @ 70,000 miles happened because the etm wouldn't allow the torque converter do whatever it is a torque converter does, and that caused the oil to heat up and then the resulting transmission failure. He said there is no one around who will touch my transmission. I have to use a dealer to replace it. I am completely devastated and cannot afford to replace the transmission. The car is a lemon. It has almost caused me to be involved in accidents, and I'd really appreciate it if someone could contact me about what resources I have. You are welcome to test my car! I have read on the internet about others who are experiencing the same problems with their etms and then subsequent transmission failures. Please help!.

Idling in a lot the car cut out, drove it to the Volvo dealer to check, nothing found to be wrong. Several months later, the power diminished while driving, took it to a mechanic who checked everything and could find no problem, but heard for the first time. . . . There could be an air mix problem. . . With no check engine light, can't really know. Drove the car back to va. From mass. Where problem started and had no further problems until April or may of this year (2005) when turning into my driveway, the engine totally cut out. I had it towed to don beyer Volvo in falls church, va, where no problem could be found. I insisted they keep the car until they found the problem, and was given a loaner. The service rep. Said he would drive the car to see if he could replicate the situation. They kept the car for 2-3 weeks with no success. I picked the car up with a friend, who drove it off the lot. Not on the highway five minutes when the car lost power, the check engine light appeared, we drove back to the dealer. They found this time it was the air flow meter, which they replaced. Although I still feel no confidence in the vehicle, the problem has not occurred again. The information below is all encompassing of the events but the incident date reflects the date which they found the air flow meter problem exactly.
I own a 1998 Volvo V70. With less than 50,000 miles on the odometer, I have had to replace both the air pump and the abs control module. These parts should not have failed on a car that is five years old. Since the car is past its warranty period, Volvo will not reimburse me for these parts (a total of $1,273). In response to a letter from me, Volvo said, "in the event that either of these components is recalled, reimbursement could be considered at that time. " please add my name to others who undoubtedly have complained about these faulty parts (air pump - pks70ap and abs/trac - 8602266) so that a recall can be issued. I would be glad to submit to NHTSA both letters between Volvo and myself.
This car has had a sulfur smell in the emissions since the day of purchase. When it didn't go away at 200 miles, complained to the dealer. They said it would take 2000 miles. Didn't go away by them. They have replaced the O2 sensor, downloaded and upgraded computer, replaced the mass air flow sensor and we are on our third cat converter but the car still smells of sulfur. Especially noxious at low speeds, stop and go traffic and idleing! in June of 2000 they said they weren't authorizing any more repairs on the car. But the car still smells. Concerned about the smell being an irritant to my son who has history of asthma.
