1 Engine problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 08/11/2006

The engine performed a shut-down/reduction in power procedure while accelerating in heavy traffic. "performance reduced/engine system service urgent" notice appeared on the information screen. I had to quickly move out of the way to prevent causing a major accident. After resetting the warning light, I proceeded driving to get to an appropriate location to wait for assistance. The engine shut-down again.

2 Engine problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 12/24/2005

I am an owner of a 2001 Volvo xc70. It recently broke down in nyc with a "decreased performance" message shown on the computer as well as jerking and lag in all forward movement. The car was seen at martin's manhattan after being towed. They found nothing wrong when plugged into the computer. Drove the car home from nyc to richmond va. During this time the car displayed a moderate lag during highway speeds when acceleration was needed(I. E. Hills, passing). Took the car into moors Volvo to have them do what I thought would be a more detailed investigation. They also found nothing and said they "upgraded" the software. Then, this morning Dec. 24 2005 the car once again gave a "reduced performance" message, lagged, only moved forward with marked inhibition and would vibrate terribly when in neutral. If I can be of any assistance please feel free to contact me.

3 Engine problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 08/06/2005

While driving my 2001 Volvo V70 xc, the car stopped running and displayed the message - reduced performance mode. I got the car to the side of the road and turn off the engine. When I restarted it ran ok again. I took it to my Volvo certified repair shop and they found in the recorded fault codes a bad electronic throttle body control unit (etc). They test drove the car and it stopped twice on the technician. Once at highway speeds! I had it the unit replaced. This is a serious situation that needs investigated. Two other cars at this shop had the same problem. Volvo should be required to issue a recall and fix this serious defect. This is a safety issue as the car loses all power and the power assisted brakes and power steering become inoperable. This is under NHTSA action number pe05041.

4 Engine problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/29/2005

Without warning my 1998 Volvo V70 awd wagon shuts off. . . While driving. Power steering and all. I've spent over $700 in repairs and the mechanic cannot figure it out. Now I dare not take it on a highway. The recent reports of this happening to years 1999 and on must be amended to include the 1998. I bought this wagon because of Volvo's longevity reputation. Now it's a potential road hazard.

6 Engine problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/20/2005

While driving with my 6 year old daughter at 70 mph on highway 58 in golden, CO my 2001 Volvo xc wagon suddenly lost power and I could only go 10 mph on July 20, 2005. I was able to exit and parked the car for an hour. It restarted and ran normally for about 5 minutes when I had a second sudden loss of power while driving 65 on 6th avenue in golden. The message center on my dash said service was urgent, so I stopped the car on the exit ramp for 1. 5 hrs. Until a tow truck arrived which towed the car to rickenbaugh Volvo in denver for a cost of $142. 50. The next day, I paid rickenbaugh Volvo in denver $982. 53 to replace the throttle unit and gasket, and remove, clean and replace the crank case ventilation nipple and $272. 68 for emissions service.

7 Engine problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/14/2005

While driving my 2000 Volvo V70xc on the highway, the car took itself out of cruise control and began to flucuate +/- 3 mph in speed. The ets light came on too. After pulling off the highway and turning the engine off, I re-started the car and drove home without incident. My local mechanic (hoshi motors of boulder, CO) downloaded the engine codes (904d, 91ac) which he said indicated that the etm needed to be replaced. The etm was replaced on 7/27/05 at a cost of $908. 60. The problem has not occurred again. The etm was returned to me and is available. This complaint is related to NHTSA action number pe05041.

10 Engine problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/09/2003

At highway speeds (60 mph), on an uphill grade, the car was attempting to shift between gears. The car lost power and rpm indication began to fluctuate between 1800 and 2300 rpm. The ets light came on and the car continued to intermittently lose power for the remainder of our trip home (roughly 60 miles). The car has 57,000 miles on it and sounds very similar to other complaints I have been reading. Since then, the car repeats these symptoms at any speed in the two trips to 1) local mechanic and 2) dealer vehicle purchased at.

11 Engine problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/12/2003

At about 8,000 miles, my 2001 (purchased summer 2002) Volvo V70 suddenly stopped when I slowed down on a road near my home. The car restarted, but did not seem to have the same pick-up as before. I subsequently took the car into the Volvo dealership and was told the throttle mechanism needed cleaning. After this was done, the car seemed fine for several months. At about 15,000 miles, the same thing happened on a difference stretch of road. The seemed weaker than before and it took longer to restart. The Volvo dealership again diagnosed a dirty throttle, cleaned it, and returned it to me. The car seemed normal until about 24,000 miles, when I was unable to start the car after it had been parked for about two hours. This time, I tried many times to start the vehicle, but ultimately had to call a tow truck. It was towed to Volvo, where they told it was a throttle problem again. After cleaning, it appeared normal. The car is currently at about 30,000 miles, but I take it in every three months to get the throttle mechanism cleaned as a precaution.

12 Engine problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 08/15/2001

2001 Volvo V70 etm failure. "performance reduced" warning message on dash, causing loss of power and severe surging/bucking. . Very scary and unsafe, reluctant to drive car in this cond.

13 Engine problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/01/2001

Heard loud "knocking" when turning right and left, decelerating, and entering/exiting parking lots. Took car to dealership three times and told nothing was wrong. It was simply a very heavy car and might make that noise in those circumstances. Problem worsened. Took to independent mechanic and he found broken motor mounts which left engine sitting on top of steering column. He stated it was a design flaw that has now damaged the steering and possibly alignment, suspension, etc. Also noted that placement of engine on top of steering column will probably cause the motor mounts to break again within six months.

14 Engine problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/08/1999

Had driven vehicle . After routine service when engine stopped cold, tried starting, but nothing. Smoke started coming from under the hood. Then the engine caught on fire.
