1 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/23/2006

2000 V70xcaw cross country wagon etm system failed. The ac hose compressor condenser was replaced. The vehicle was leaking gas and the o-ring seal on the pump sender was replaced. The front passenger window was inoperable when trying to use the master controls. The dealer replaced the module switch. The engine would whine at highway speeds while accelerating. The battery, oil pan, upper torque mount, angle gear, rotors, fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel seal and struts were all replaced. The cv boot was leaking. The turbo charger was replaced because of an oil leak.

2 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/07/2006

The events leading up to the failure was a rough idle (vehicle would surge to 1100 rpm and drop to 500 rpm) while at a stop. The vehicle also stalled twice while idling in park. I contacted the Volvo dealership to make an appointment for service. On my way home from work the day before I was to drop the vehicle off at the dealership, the vehicle stalled in an intersection. There was a near collision due to the stall. I was able to restart the vehicle and drive it to the shoulder. I called the dealership and described the problem. I asked the service advisor if it would damage the vehicle if I would continue to drive it. He indicated that they could not make a recommendation. I asked them if they would tow the vehicle to their facility. They referred me to a private towing company. There was no answer to the phone number I was given. I decided to wait for the traffic to subside and drive to the dealership using secondary roads. I was able to keep the vehicle running by putting the vehicle in neutral and applying the gas pedal to keep the idle high whenever I approached a stop. When I was approximately 1 mile from the dealership, the gas pedal stopped functioning altogether. The check engine light came on as well as an emission service required message. I turned the vehicle off and restarted it. The gas pedal resumed working but the check engine light and emission service required message continued. I left the vehicle at the dealership (approx. 7:30 p. M. Ãâ¢ã‚ã‚ by this time they were closed). The following day, the Volvo service advisor informed me that the problem was related to the electronic throttle module (etm). I was told that there was an extended warranty for this part (10-years, 200,000-mile). The service included a cleaning of the part and reloading of software. After learning this, I searched the internet and found this problem was typical to this make and model. It is only a matter of time until your reports will soon show an increase in the injuries.

3 Fuel Delivery problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/27/2005

I own a 1999 Volvo V70 xc. On October 27, 2005, while I was driving the vehicle it suddenly and without warning began to stall. I pressed the accelerator to the floor to no avail. I was able to coast out of traffic. I turned the engine off, waited a few minutes, started the vehicle and drove home. Although it appeared to drive a little better, it continued to jerk and sputter.

4 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/11/2005

Vehicle incurred minor loss of power while cruising at highway speeds followed by engine surges and repeated losses of power. Engine did not stall out, but did disengage cruise control and dash board did display reduced performance warning. After vehicle engine is shut off, the reduced performance warning temporarily disappeared and then reappeared after 10-15 minutes of driving. This engine behavior last about one week, and then the dash board displayed a new service maintenance-urgent message. The 2001 Volvo xc70 was then drive immediately to Volvo dealer and he determined the vehicle had a faulty electric throttle body and defective accelerator sensor. The repair cost over $1,075. 00 to repair.

5 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 09/29/2005

Our 2000 Volvo V70xc ets light came while driving in traffic and I lost control of the car. I could not accelerate and had a truck bearing down on me and my family in the car. I had to coast to a stop and pull over and shut car off in a bad spot. It would not restart and when it did the engine ran very rough. After a few minutes I restarted the car and was able to make it home but with not much faith in my car. The car has been very well cared for and has low miles. Dealer says it needs a new etm and will cost upwards of $1000.

7 Fuel Delivery problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 08/13/2005

On Aug. 13, 2005, my wife was driving on a public road in san francisco approx. 35 mph when her 1999 Volvo V70 (approx. 72,500 miles on the odometer) stalled. I called putnam Volvo in burlingame the following Tuesday, and made a service appointment for Thursday, Aug. 18. That Thursday morning, when I started the car, it began to idle roughly, surging from approx. 800 rpm to 1500 rpm repeatedly. I shut the car down, then restarted it; the car then ran fairly normally. Putnam Volvo diagnosed the problem as a faulty throttle control module, and charged me $1225. 00 for the repair. It seems that many of these throttle control modules are failing prematurely.

10 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/06/2005

1) driving in urban traffic over a two line bridge in portland oregon. The service indicator light is on for a tail light bulb out. I have scheduled a service appointment for the next week to have it replaced. 2. The car decreases in speed from 50 mph to 20 mph in about 100 feet. Traffic behind fortunately is far enough back to avoid collision on a very narrow bridge. I drive the car off the bridge and park it. It is towed the following day to the dealer. 3. The dealer states that it needs a new electronic throttle module. I ask if this is anything unusual, and he states that it is not and they just sometimes need to be replaced. He esimates the cost at $1000 dollars. I complain about the cost and several hours later I am told the part will be free and I only need to pay the 360 dollars for labor. This all seems strange- I feel my life was endangered and perhaps there is more to this problem than something particular to my car. I get on the web and research shows this to be a major problem- including recent articles in the la times. In talking with customer service at Volvo north America- it was clear they wanted to find a way to get it fixed so I wouldn't complain to anyone. I suggest, however, that a rapid deaccelleration is a potentially large safety issue and if as web research shows, that many people know about this specfic malfunction- then someone should commence a recall as soon as possible before someone really is hurt. I am having the dealer replace the part now.

11 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/05/2005

1. Our 2000 Volvo V70 cross country se with just 67,000 miles on the odometer had surging when under constant throttle on the road. This was followed shortly by having severe throttle response such as having the car abruptly slowed from 55 mph to 10 mph at a constant throttle. My wife, coming home from work late at night, had to drive at a very unsafe 10 mph on a major road. This could have caused an accident had there been heavier traffic. Luckily there was not much traffic, and she could pull over to let faster cars pass. 2. The V70 had a etm warning light lit up intermittently on the dashboard during the surging period as well constantly when she had to drive home at 10 mph with the accelerator pedal floored. 3. Darling Volvo in bangor maine indicated that the cause was the electronic throttle module and associated parts which were failing and needed replacement. 4. Darlings Volvo estimated the cost to be over $1000 for the repair, parts and labor. We were told that this part can not just be repaired but must be replaced with a new part. Another Volvo dealer, goodwins Volvo in topsham maine said the repair was also about $1000. Darlings Volvo said that Volvo would not assist in the repair, even though I told them that I had read on the internet that this was a problem that was occurring with Volvos of this model year to a great extent. 5. After paying for the entire cost of the repair ($1050. 48) I was told when I picked up the car that this problem will probably reoccur as the throttle body has design problems that will cause the problem once again. Even though so far the car is working fine, knowing that the problem is going to happen again (more $), makes us discouraged about keeping this vehicle as it has cost us too much already for this needless repair that Volvo should have taken care of. It does not lend itself to trust any more, especially for a car with only 67,000 miles on it.

16 Fuel Delivery problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/12/2001

Recurring problem (3 times at least now) with leaking fuel tank, strong smell and noticeable leaks on the r. H. S. Fuel tank (rear side) underneath. A few loose clamps on the hoses on the top of the tank found and fixed. Problem disappeared, but comes back with every re-fueling. 17 Fuel Delivery problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/02/2001

I was heading to the country on a 2-hour drive and the weather was hot above 80 degrees. So I guess you can say the engine was also very hot. I also had the ac going which is a good description of the environment at the time of failure. I was on a narrow country paved road traveling about 25 mph. I know this speed to be true because I was in a development where the speed limit is low and I always travel slow in the development. There was a parked car on the side of the road and I had to move slightly off the paved part of the road onto a slight decline unpaved part of the road then when I passed the vehicle turned back onto the paved surface. In effect at on time the drivers side 2 wheels were on the decline unpaved road. When I turned back onto the road the car stalled and it was hard to steer but this was not a concern because I was going slowly. I tried to restart which any body would do and then began to smell a strong gasoline odor. I pop opened the hood but did not see any wrong but did notice what appeared to be gasoline on the floor under the engine. With the hood opened I tried to start the car again and now saw gasoline all over the hot engine. After quickly wiping the gas from the engine I found the fuel line had separated and I was not surprised since this was a snap together part that sits on top of the engine.

18 Fuel Delivery problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/02/1998

Car lost total engine power at freeway speed when operating at normal temperature. Would restart on berm upon slight cooling, then failure recurred back on freeway. Car was flatabeded to dealer for service. Dealer first identified fuel pump failure, then said wiring to fuel pump was incorrectly installed. So far, dealer's repair satisfactory.
