1 Tank Assembly problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/26/2011

The contact owns a 1999 Volvo V70xc. The contact stated there was fuel leaking from the top of the fuel tank causing it to fail inspection. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer nor to an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was contacted regarding the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 101,000.

2 Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 12/30/2008

I was driving alone in napa, CA at night on Tuesday, December 30th. I signaled to make a right hand turn from 30mph (so I was braking at the beginning of the turn and during the turn). About half way through the turn, I lost all power, power steering, brakes, etc. All of the dashboard lights went on - car was dead. I was trying to brake and steer to miss colliding with a parked car - to no avail. The car came to a stop about 1 foot from the a parked car in the opposite lane from where I was supposed to be. Fortunately, there was neither a waiting motorist nor a pedestrian walking at the intersection, as I most certainly would have hit them. While in the wrong lane, facing the wrong direction (by about 30 degrees) I managed to start the car immediately, but not without an oncoming motorist having to go around me. The same thing happened twice in October of this year - I brought it to my local Volvo dealer/service shop where they found "nothing" wrong with it. I did my own online research, finding similar issues and a recall citing problems with the fuel pressure sensor. My dealer replaced that part- and it has been running without incident until this Tuesday. Worth mentioning: in each incident, I was braking from no more than 30 mph. I had at least 3/4 tank of gas (the first time it occurred I was leaving a gas station!).

4 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/23/2006

The fuel tank on my 1998 Volvo V70 has failed. The check engine light came on in my car about 6 months ago. After replacing almost my entire fuel evap system, Volvo determined my fuel tank had a leak. I requested that Volvo replace my fuel tank at their expense, because I feel that a fuel tank should be expected to last more than 8 years. Volvo has refused to recall the tank and has absolved themselves of any responsibility for the failure.

5 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/14/2006

A few weeks ago, I have noticed a strong gas fuel smell from my 98 Volvo V70 cross country awd from the gas tank area. The smell comes from the area in front of the rr wheel, on top of the plastic panel which covers the fuel tank. The leak is noticeable when the tank is full. The only way for me to keep the smell from popping out is to not fill up the tank more than 8 or 10 gallons. The car is no longer safe to be parked in the garage as the fuel smell it releases is so strong that I can fill the house with it through my vents. I want the NHTSA to look at this problem as this seems to be a common failure on the V70 awd. Many Volvo internet boards have mentioned possible failure with the gas tank/expansion valve/fuel pump area. Can you please take a look, thanks. Let me know if you have questions.

6 Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/31/2004

My 2004 Volvo V70 wagon spewed and spit gas when being filled with gasoline. When the automatic shut off from the gas pump engaged, gas from the tank and the filler line gushed and poured out of the tank. This happened on several occasions including the very first time I filled the vehicle with gas. It also occurred when I attempted to fill the gas tank slowly so that pressure would not eject gasoline from the tank. The car was brought to the dealer where it was purchased (smith CO. Motors - charleston, wv) for the problem to be fixed on March 31, 2004. After inspecting valves in the gas tank and fuel filler tube, the dealer contacted me to tell me no problem had been found. I asked the dealer service manager if the tank had been filled with gas to make sure gasoline did not continue to gush from the tank. The dealer then filled the tank and called to me to confirm that the problem had not been fixed. The car was then at the dealer and out of service until April 8, 2004, when a Volvo representative discovered that the car had a manufacturing defect. I was told the defect was that a valve had not been installed on the car at the factory. On April 12, 2004 I returned home from work and pulled into my driveway. I left the car running in my driveway. After 1 to 2 minutes inside, I notice a strong smell of gasoline. The car had stopped running and was freely spilling gallons of gasoline into my driveway. The dealer discovered a new gas tank had not been properly installed by the service technician. I am interested in NHTSA investigating if the repeated failures of my fuel system are related. I am further interested in NHTSA determining if other 2004 Volvos with similar fuel system components could have also left the factory without a completely assembled fuel system. I encountered a very serious safety problem that could have resulted in a catastrophic accident.

10 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/10/2002

Fuel tank is leaking fuel. Tank is cracked, so there is always puddles of fuel in the consumer's garage. Contacted dealer. Consumer states that it appears to be an emission problem, environmental problem and a major safety problem.

11 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/11/2001

I was driving about 40 mph, when I ran over a piece of metal that was about the size of a ruler. I heard a loud bang, and then I got home, found that gas was pouring out of the gas tank. It had been punctured. Obviously, we all could have been killed if there was a spark. I would not have expected a gas tank to so easily punctured. ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****744064.

12 Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 12/29/2000

Consumer states while traveling at high speed engine suddenly shut down, vehicle was towed to dealership and after inspection of the vehicle it was determined that debris was left in the fuel tank, that at certain fuel levels clog the fuel line that causes engine to shut down, the dealer has solved the problem by using a fuel filter, however dealer still has the vehicle because they have discovered that the tank runs dry while still indicating 75 miles of gas on the instrumentation.

13 Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/01/2000

I had a fuel leak which the dealer failed to repair after repeated reports of the problem being corrected. It was not untill the car was flat bedded to the original dealer that it was finally corrected. The fire department drained the tank. I was 9 months pregnant and driving a car without my knowledge that had a fuel leak.

14 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 12/26/1998

There was a "large fuel leak in fuel system". The tee junctions and clamps were replaced.

15 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/29/1998

After filling up the tank, fuel was found to be dripping under the car. It appears to be coming from the expansion tank or its hoses. The dealer needs to drop the rear suspension to get a better look, and then order parts. I've have read about this problem involving other V70s.

16 Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 08/01/1998

Leaky fuel tank.

17 Tank Assembly problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Structure coupling housing cross member would become unbolted. Fuel tank is indirectly attached cloosely by strap to the frame member. This would have caused tank to fall off.

18 Tank Assembly problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Theirs is a very bad fuel leak coming from the fuel tank area, it leaks up to five gallons within an hour. Dealer has been contacted.
