Our 2004 Volvo V70 engine cut off while driving on highway 68 in high point. At the time, we were traveling at approximately 45 miles per hour. Luckily there was a side road nearby so we were able to coast, stop, and restart the car safely. Since that day, the check engine light has been coming on and then going off and the engine has shut down while driving on several other occassions. We took the car to crown Volvo in greensboro, nc and they claimed there were not any recalls on our 2004 Volvo V70 and performed a $65 diagonstic service and determined that our fuel pressure sensor had failed and need to be replaced at a cost of over $400. We pulled recall information for our car off motortrend's sited (see below) and forwarded this to the dealership. The dealership called Volvo's customer support team and they said our car was outside the warranty period and had no recall for this issue. We countered that recalls are not warranty claims and fall outside that window. Our car has experienced the same issue listed in recall listed below and the repair and diagnostic test should be honored by Volvo!!
recall date Jun 05, 2007
consequences: misfire may occur during driving that, in turn, will reduce the engine torque and in the worst case scenario, the engine may stall without warning. In certain traffic situations this could cause an unsafe situation and possibly a crash. Remedy: dealers will replace the fuel pressure sensor free of charge. The recall began on June 29, 2007. Owners may contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552.

On a recent rainy afternoon I stalled out in the middle of a very busy intersection in my 2004 V70, subjecting myself and my family to a very dangerous situation. I was able to restart my car, and after several more stall outs and restarts I was able to limp to a nearby parking lot where I called my repair shop to have my car towed in for repair. My mechanic diagnosed the problem as a faulty fuel pressure sensor, ordered the part from the local Volvo dealer and repaired my car; the total bill, including towing was $615. Later that week, my husband looked up vehicle recalls on the NHTSA website and found recall #r181 which exactly described my situation. I would like to know why I was not notified of this recall before my car stalled and put me and my family at great risk.
My 2002 Volvo xc 70 seems to smell like gasoline inside the car. I have read on numerous Volvo forums regarding Volvo owners that has the same or similar concerns. This cant be good for the driver(myself) or the vehicle. Any insight on a recall would be wonderful. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Lost power in traffic, had to drive 10 mph in limp mode in heavy traffic.

Check engine light is on service light is on throttle position sensor and oxygen sensor defects, troubleshooting codes: p1171,p1132,p0141.
My 2000 Volvo xc70 developed a dangerous engine condition that needs to be reported and corrected. The dashboard indicated a red ets light which according to the owners manual needs to be diagnosed by a certified Volvo mechanic. I took the car to an independent Volvo garage who identified the problem as a throttle body malfunction in the intake of the engine. The garage made a temporary ($300) repair and recommended that I visit a Volvo dealer and warned that an appropriate repair would cost as much as $1,000 including parts and labor. According to the various Volvo forums, this is a common and costly problem with these Volvos. The symptoms include hesitation when accelerating, fluctuating idle rpm and outright stalling. This is a dangerous condition. I have parked the car until I can be reasonably assured that this can be suitably repaired preferably at Volvo expense.
December 10, 2010 - Jan 5, 2011) frequent engine stalls, check engine light illuminated. Service diagnoses (chesapeake import services, annapolis, MD) revealed ecm & dtc codes pointing to Volvo recall 181, NHTSA campaign # 07v2z6000. Dealer and Volvo cars of north America, llc indicate vehicle (VIN: [xxx]) is not covered by recall; Volvo will not pay for repair. Vehicle repaired on January 9, 2011 at owner expense by implementing the recall action (replace fuel pressure sensor). Check engine has remained out and there are no further problems with surge or stall. While the chassis number (409846) appears to be out of the recall range from the information available to the owner, there may be substantial risk to other owners with these vehicles. One of the engine failures (the last one) for this owners' vehicle occurred at a busy, high speed, and notorious intersection. The vehicle was then parked until a repair could be effected. We highly recommend that the scope of the recall campaign be reexamined with a view toward covering all the vehicles that might be exposed to this extremely dangerous condition. The contact owns a 2004 Volvo V70. The check engine light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosis located the failure as the fuel pressure sensor. The manufacturer stated that the VIN wasn't listed in recall 07v226000 engine and engine cooling; therefore, they would not assist with the repairs. The failure and the current mileages were 84,000. Updated 01/13/lj updated 03/31/11 updated 05/04/11.
Parts defect - relay that regulates fuel consumption. Volvo recalled some cars but did not include our VIN number.
I have a 2001 Volvo v-70 t-5 with 105,000 miles on the vehicle. I have noticed the car is surging while driving on the highway. While trying to pass another vehicle the car began to surge and I had to brake and get back into the right lane. After doing some investigating I have found out that this is probably the result of the Volvo etm problem that is known to exist. This incident is a real concern to me as Volvo marketing is known to mention "safety" at every turn. This is not a good situation and this could cause severe accidents in the future. This problem fix should go beyond the 10 year 200,000 mile that Volvo has initiated. This should be a long term recall.

I was drive about 45 mph on a busy road and suddenly my car lost acceleration and check engine light came on and dash board showing "performance reduced". It recreated a unsafe situation and I had to turn the emergency light on and slowly pulled of to the side of the road. It has occurred twice now. Next business day I took the car to a Volvo dealer and I performed a software upgrade on the etm. But I don't think that will solve the problem, it only lessen the sensitivity of the etm to mask the problem, sooner of later, this "performance reduced" will come back again and an unsafe situation could be more dangerous depending on the where and the driving conditions.
1. Premature wear of the etm. 2. Car has rough idle, stalls, surges in traffic. 3. Replacing the etm. For the third time.

Gasoline overflows from the fill neck spilling down the car and onto the ground. This is a fire risk and an environmental violation. This has happened with various pumps at various gas stations. This never happened to me with any other car in 30 years. I have found others reporting the same problem on the web.

My regularly serviced Volvo wagon's "service engine" light came on. Like a good customer, took it to the dealership. They determined it to be a defect in the leak detection problem. Soaked me for over $500 for the repair, which they started without my permission. The car only has 50,770 miles on it and is a 2004, purchase in Jan. '04. I am beginning to think it is a case of pre-planned failure. Please help!!.
The contact owns a 2001 Volvo V70. The contact stated that fuel leaked from the vehicle onto the garage floor. The mechanic stated that the fuel sending unit cracked and caused the leak. The unit was replaced. The dealer was not notified. The current and failure mileages were 91,000.
I have a 99 Volvo V70 t5, on July 3rd of 2006 we had the vehicle in as the etm light was on, the dealer upgraded the software of the etm at no cost, now a year later the vehicle is undrivable. It surges at low idle causing the vehicle to jump forward, it consistently stalls out and now is beginning to surge while driving down the road at any rpm. I feel that this is a extreme hazard and I am no longer able to drive the vehicle.
Volvo, 2001 V70 - VIN yv1sw58d111019707 this specific vehicle is unreliable and unsafe. Since purchased new, car has had multiple system failures leading to various unsafe driving conditions including brake system failure and engine failure (including loss of braking and steering systems). Manufacturer has acknowledged unusual nature of this particular vehicle quality defects - concerned that car must be taken off road to avoid serious crash. Please advise.
Car suddenly loses power at highway speeds.
8/16/05-car stalled and suddenly lost power 3 times while car was operating at low speed on city roads. No check engine light came on. Each time it stalled, the car restarted and was able to proceed out of traffic and, after the third stall to the dealership for repair. 8/17/05-8/18/05-car repaired at sesi Volvo dealership, ann arbor michigan. The throttle body was cleaned, mass air flow sensor replaced and rear oxygen sensor replaced. Service dept said car cleared the computer diagnostic tests and test drive was ok. Service person incorrectly wrote on the service invoice that "customer says check engine light is on all the time" this is not correct. I did not at any time see the check engine light on nor report that it was on to service people. 9/03/05-car stalled and suddenly lost power while driving at 65 m. P. H. On the highway at 10 pm at night. Car had traveled 150 miles from owner/driver's home at time of stalling and no check engine light came on before, during or after the stall. Driver able to steer car to shoulder, even with lack of power steering and avoid traffic proceeding at high speed behind vehicle. Car restarted for a few seconds 3 times before failing to start at all. Motorist, 52 year old woman, traveling alone, was stranded in a dangerous circumstance. Car coasted into gas station, motorist phoned aaa road service and car was towed 1 hour later to segna Volvo near columbus, ohio. 9/7/05 segna motors service department reports to owner that car today starts fine, test drives fine and no computer codes are showing up in the computer's diagnostic system. They say the car seems fine, yet they are planning to contact Volvo corporation for a the company's technical advice on how to proceed. Owner severely dissatisfied that after repair of problem it recurred and driver was in dangerous position of losing power suddenly at 65 mph on the freeway and being stranded alone at night, will not accept a diagnosis that nothing is wrong with the car.
Ets dashboard light on 2000 Volvo V70 xc came on while driving approx. 35 mph. Car immediately hesitated and slowed to a speed of approx. 15 mph, then came to a traffic light and engine shut down. After several attempts to restart engine, it did start and arrived at destination which was car repair shop. Traffic behind vehicle was stopped while attempts made to restart car, amid much honking of horns and angry comments. On at least four previous occasions within two weeks prior to this incident, ets warning light came on, and except for one occasion when car stalled but could be maneuvered to side of road, engine hesitated but did not shut down. Hence the trip to the car repair shop on this date. As I write this, the ets system is being evaluated and the throttle body is being replaced.
Electronic throttle module etm causing hesitation while driving in heavy traffic. Volvo dealers service manager suggested bringing the car back while the ets warning light was still on. Stated that the etm should be cleaned every 30k miles or replaced. Nothing in the service manual mentions this type of service. The hesitation was intermittent but very uncomfortable driving while it was happening.
I own a 2000 Volvo cross country xc 70 that has experienced stalling and loss of power on several occasions. I contacted the dealer I purchased the car from and they informed me that it was a common problem with Volvo's between the mileage of 35,000 and 45,000 miles. They also informed me that the repair was not covered under any recalls or extended warranty. A search of complaints on this type of vehicle on the internet show that there is an above average of failures of what is referred to as the "electronic throttle system". I feel that this is something that Volvo is aware of but refuses to help the customer with. In my opinion, a $1,300 to $1,600 repair is not normal. Volvo/Ford needs to address this issue and recall these vehicles as soon as possible.
1) vehicle stalls while driving in any weather condition
2) vehicle will not start after stalling
3) power brakes and power steering are reduced and present a dangerous driving situation
4) Volvo dealership avoids faulty design responsibility.

Ets light goes on and car does not get sufficient gas.
On July 12, 2005 my Volvo V70r awd wagon stopped without warning while it was being driven. It would not start again and had to be towed to the dealer. The dealer said the mass air flow sensor had to be replaced. The cost was $385. 19. This was an extremely scary experience and could have been life-threatening if we had been driving on the freeway. When I heard about similar problems with 1999-2001 Volvos, I thought my year car may also fall into this group. Volvo claims to be the best when it comes to safety but this experience has made me feel that my car is not reliable and is unsafe.
I have a 2001 Volvo V70 t5. The car suddenly and without warning simply stopped running while I was driving at highway speeds on the interstate. No power steering, nothing. It was shocking. The repair shop said that it was the throttle body that needed to be replaced. . . For a lot of money. He also said that this is a very common problem with these cars, and that the part installed by the factory was "engineered to fail" due to the design.
Loss of power on highway car slowed to 20 mph on highway, replaced etm module also happened in Jan 2005 had etm cleaned as per service bulletin.
The car could be running just fine and all of the sudden it would start lurching and the rpms would vary by as much as 500 - 600 rpms. When you stopped the car it had to be placed in neutral to keep it from stalling-out. After you got off to the side of the road and switched the car off and restarted it, it would be fine for short distances. I checked at an after market repair shop for Volvo's to get an estimate of necessary repairs. The mechanic knew exactly what was wrong with the car as soon as I explained the symptoms to him. He said was the "electronic throttle body module. " I asked if we could find a used module. He laughed and stated that the module had to be program for that specific car. He stated it was general knowledge that this was a common problem occurring on numerous 2000 models and newer V70's and s70's. I took the car to the Volvo dealership and had the module replaced for a total cost of $1036. Although no accident occurred in my case, it could have!.
I was driving at approx 50 mph on a major thoroughfare up a hill when my vehicle suddenly lost power. The computer displayed a "reduced power" message. I pulled to the right, and continued to drive about 1/8 mile at significantly reduced power until I could pull completely off the road (my children were with me and I wanted to be off the road). I pulled into a parking lot, turned off my vehicle. After a two phone calls, I attempted to turn the vehicle on. It seemed to run fine. I continued on, dropped my children at school, and drove to the Volvo dealer. Their notes indicate: ". . . Found that etm is defective and had internal faults in it. Also found that the codes were set for maf sensor reading out of range. Removed etm and found that it was cover with oil. Checked banjo fitting and found it to be plugged, clean out banjo fitting, replaced etm and maf sensor down loaded new software into car. Cleared all old dtcs and test drove car. Car now driving to Volvo's specs. " cost of repairs: $1332. 47 ouch! the lost of power occurred first -- the additional problems were, I believe, a result of the etm failure or due to the fact that I needed to continue driving a short distance to find a safe stopping place. Replaced: throttle body, gasket, mass air flow, etm reload.
I read in our local paper that the NHTSA was investigating the loss of speed and stalling of the engine in Volvo wagons in the 2001 model year. I too have had the same issue. The vehicle would loose power and slow to very low speeds and operate improperly. The reason for the problem was the computer module that regulates the fuel flowing to the engine. I had to have it replaced at a cost of over $1000. That has appeared to solve the issue. Very expensive part to have go bad and very dangerous situation. My wife was driving the car when it first occurred. The car slowed unexpectedly in heavy traffic and a large truck almost ran up on the car fortunately she was able to turn off the road and the truck was able to slow down in time so no injury occurred.
1) electronic throttle module (etm) shuts down the gas pedal where you have no control on acceleration 2) etm shutdown could cause a major accident 3) replace the etm at $1100 the owners should have been notified under warranty to clean the etm.
1. Vehicle "sputtered", engine would rev with no change in pressure on gas pedal, followed by nearly complete loss of power and near engine cut off. 2. No complete failure, as soon as symptoms began, it was taken to a dealer 3. Volvo dealer and repair shop determined the failure was ecm code 903c, 91a7: "throttle internal fault". Replaced electronic throttle module. Old part is not available. 15 Mar 2005 - 1. Same symptoms; car was unable to maintain highway speed of 60 mph. 2. Engine stalled once before going to dealer repair but started back up without problem. 3. Exact failure codes not provided, but was determined to be "engine control module fault". Electronic throttle module was replaced. Covered by Volvo parts warranty. Old part is not available.
Malfunctioning of the electronic throttle system (ets) on my 1999 Volvo V70 station wagon caused me to lose power or stall completely while driving. It happened several times prior to having the ets replaced. It occurred for me at low speeds and in light traffic allowing me to get off the road. I was able to restart the engine after a short time interval. It could have been a major safety hazard if I had this failure at highway speeds and in traffic. This occurred several months ago and has been repaired at my expense, but on reading an associated press article today on an investigation of this problem by the NHTSA, I am submitting this as another instance of the problem being investigated. The air conditioning compressor and power windows had to be replaced. Currently, the check engine light is on.
This is the second vehicle that consumer has gotten from Volvo. First vehicle was leaving a puddle of gas. So dealer gave consumer another vehicle of the same idenity. Both were brand new. Also, a leak developed under the second vehicle. Consumer feels its unsafe to drive because it may start a fire if someone drops a match beside vehicle.
