The contact owns a 2005 Volvo V70. While approaching a stop sign at 55 mph, the vehicle began smoking under the hood. The contact exited the vehicle right before it burst into flames. The fire department arrived at the scene and a report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a repair shop. 2000 V70xcaw cross country wagon etm system failed. The ac hose compressor condenser was replaced. The vehicle was leaking gas and the o-ring seal on the pump sender was replaced. The front passenger window was inoperable when trying to use the master controls. The dealer replaced the module switch. The engine would whine at highway speeds while accelerating. The battery, oil pan, upper torque mount, angle gear, rotors, fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel seal and struts were all replaced. The cv boot was leaking. The turbo charger was replaced because of an oil leak.

1999 Volvo V70 etm (electronic throttle module) failure - my wife and 3 year old daughter were driving the car on a major four lane avenue, in heavy traffic, when the etm failed. The car started idling rough. When she came to a stop light, she had to press the brake extremely hard to prevent the car from lunging into the vehicle in front of her. When she accelerated to proceed, the car would only go a maximum of 30 mph, even with the accelerator pressed to the floor. Luckily, the crown Volvo dealership (greensboro, nc) was on the same stretch of avenue. She managed to get to the dealership and get it repaired. We were devastated when they told us the repair would cost $934. 00. We were able to get that reduced to $836. 24, because we just happen to have a $100 discount coupon in the glove compartment. We had just had a 60,000 mile service performed on the car a couple months ago. The actual mileage when the etm failed was 64,284. The repair included replacing the faulty etm, a gasket, and a etm program reload.
Etm failed on 2000 Volvo V70xc. First intermittently, then completely left my wife and grandkids stranded. Limped home eventually. Unsafe condition, no real warning other that dash light. Needed replaced/reprogrammed at our cost. 77,000 mile on car.

Sirs - I file this compliant to add to those already filed by others that document malfunctioning electronic throttle modules in 1999 to 2001 Volvo 60/70/80-series vehicles. My 1999 V70 t5 currently exhibits the conditions indicative of etm malfunction (e. G. , rough starting, uneven acceleration, and intermittent surging when driving at steady state highway speeds). The ets dash panel light is illuminated. Only once has the car completely stalled (and it occurred in the Volvo of irvine, CA parking lot as I was departing). The car just turned 90k miles. It has not left me stranded on a highway but I'm very concerned that it will stall and go into "20-mph limp home" mode and make me a target.
My 2001 Volvo V70xc w/approx 91,000 miles stalled while I was accelerating from a stop light in heavy traffic -- nearly resulting in a serious accident as the truck behind me nearly rear-ended me. Also, because the engine shut down the power steering no-longer worked, making it very difficult to maneuver the car to the side of the road safely. My Volvo dealer told me I had a "broken" electronic throttle module" (etm) which cost me over $750 to replace. Since then, I learned on local CT news that there have been over 160 complaints involving 1999-2001 Volvos of various models (including the V70xc) for the same throttle failure problems - which poses a very serious safety concern. I intend to raise hell with Volvo about this safety issue and see if they stand up to their reputation for making some of the safest cars in the world by recalling these vehicles and replacing these defective etms!.

My 2000 Volvo V70xc ets light came on and my car engine rpms. Were limited to 2 thousand . I had to pull over and shut off my car and restart to temporarily reset it. The dealer wants $1200 to replace the throttle body . The car has been maintained properly, has 77k miles and the throttle body has already been replaced once before 2 years ago. This failure creates dangerous conditions especially on the highway. This is an unsafe design and a known defect by Volvo. Please encourage Volvo to correct this problem. Thank you, conrad gauthier.
1. No event leading to failure. Car has operated perfectly since purchased, June 2004. 2. Failure occured while driving from lunch. Car was driven approximately fifty-five (55) miles to get to work. Upon returing from lunch car stalled, would only idle, so only 20-30 mph speed was acheived. Limped into work parking lot and had high idle. Shut down vehicle. Came back next morning, car started but took to independant repair shop. Car had codes of maf sensor failure and ets sensor failure. They cleared codes and car was drivable. I drove home that evening but car exibited same failure on CA hwy 58. I disconnected battery-clearing codes and made it to residence. 3. Took vehicle to Volvo dealer in bakersfield, CA. Took one week to reproduce trouble codes. Dealer replaced ets-electronic throttle sensor and charged $855. 20 for repair. Tried to get the old ets but was told the part had a "core" charge and was not returnable.
Mileage approx 115,000 when purchased now 120,000 within 8 months. Hardly hard use. Failure of ecm and O2 sensors, on two occasions the second within 1000 miles and 1 month of first repair. Caused the car to surge, if restarted might stall and generally become dangerous to drive. No warning of failure. Volvo dealerships well aware of problem and offered immediate and correct diagnosis prior to checking the computer codes, without needing much investigation. 2 dealers worked on the car one don bayer in washington and independence Volvo in charlotte. Instructed independence Volvo dealer to make car safe and roadworthy. Uploaded faults and downloaded onto vehicle, new software. Within 1 month new symptoms appear. At various times these lights show and reset abs warning, engine warning, traction control warning, speedo failure, check engine, service warning (even though service is just carried out). Symptoms include lack of throttle response when pulling away, when speedo fails. No warning of change in status means this happens during turning maneuvers with potentially dangerous or lethal consequences. Checking various sources note that abs module failure is common making the car potentially unsafe in emergency, not only for braking but during acceleration as the cars ability to pull at its normal rate is vastly reduced, adding throttle does nothing, but if the system turns back on again no warning, the speedometer just comes back to life ) this can cause unneeded fierce acceleration. I noted one death on the highway of a young woman who appeared to accelerate off the road during a benign maneuver and am concerned that this on/off speedometer/abs transmission problem might have been the cause rather than the ecm currently the focus of the investigation.
My 1999 Volvo V70's engine unexpectedly stopped running while I was driving on I -95 in heavy traffic. I was fortunate to be able to pull off the highway, as this was a very dangerous situation. The ets warning light was on and the engine would not restart. No "limp home" mode was available. The car was towed to an independent shop. They got the car running but cruise c. Still inop. Incident occurred 4-12-05.

My 1999 Volvo V70 xc with 76,000 miles had flutuating idle and stalled occaisionally when coming to a stop, losing control ( power steering and acceleration). On 8 April 2004 we had to replace the throttle body (cost ~$1000). This month (August 2005) with 99,000 miles on the car, the same symptoms occured again. We have just replaced the throttle body again at a cost of $1000.
Throttle body (according to dealer) failure causes vehicle's computer management system to reduce performance unexpectedly. This unexpected failure and performance degradation poses high risk if traveling on busy highway at time of failure.
The consumer was having a problem with 2000 Volvo V70 xc losing power and then surging while driving 20-25 mph. The consumer did not make it up a hill . The loss of power even occurred when the car was slowing to stop and turning. This happened twice. Then, it was surging and smoking, and surging with no smoking, the car was wobbly and sluggish. Dealer replaced the following parts; spark plugs, coils, thermostat, and the filters. Other parts have been flushed, this included fuel injectors and ignition. The car has been at the dealer once, a certified Volvo specialist once, and at pep boys once. The consumer had to pay $1300. 00 to figure out what was wrong with the car. The car has had 2 diagnostic tests done. No one knew what was wrong with the car. The engine light came on, and was turned off. The consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they pretended that they did not know anything. The consumer had all the necessary documentation. However, at this point, no one knew what was wrong with the car.
While traveling on the highway ets light in our 2000 Volvo V70 xc came on and the engine lost power, causing the car to slow precipitously. Had I been on the expressway, this would have been extremely dangerous. As it was, we needed to finish our trip at under 50 mph. The vehicle has only 55000 miles on it. Volvo refuses to talk to me about it, since I haven't been having the car serviced by a dealer. This seems very early for this kind of failure. I note at least two other references to similar failures with the V70.
I was recently told my 2001 v79xc needed ball joints, then sway bars and someone else said struts! also: I have had the car diagnosed, the system reported throttle module errors and electircal or circuit problems; throttle module cleaned, then replaced; headlights replaced 3 times (wiring causes shorts); gas filter replaced two junes in a row gas propelled out of the tank back at me upon pumping (something about air intake line was clogged), the brackets underneath the car are totally rusted not stainless steel! I had the cooling fan replaced, car overheated into the red! I too have had little time to enjoy my car. The e brake sticks in the winter, because the coating on the lines/cables is cracked, broken/burned due to improper suspension. My sun roof, interior lights and rear hatch door works intermittently in cold weather. The glove compartment was rattling loudly and the dealer I bought it from tried to fix it and told me I had to live with it! of course another dealership fixed it outright. The seatbelt frequently sticks and doesnt take up the slack intermittently only to get shut in the drivers door frequently, when I just about think it has corrected itself. And, there is a strange draft on the front passenger side window that gets quite cold in the winter. The seal seems fine and its another problem no shop seems to know anything about.
The 2000 Volvo V70 which I purchased brand new began stalling every time I started to slow down after 3 years of owning it. Starting February 2003 the vehicle would completely stall or struggle to stay running. I reported the problem to one of the "authourized" Volvo dealers and scheduled service on 02/05/03. After diagnosing the car, the service center told me there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. As I was leaving the dealership the car stalled out again. I returned to the service center and they diagnosed the problem as just needing the throttle body cleaned. On 06/19/03 the problem still continued the vehicle was again diagnosed as just needing to clean the throttle body out. Again, within one month on 07/07/03, back to the service center with the same results. September 10, 2003, the problem still existed. The throttle body was cleaned again for the 4th time. Each one of these appointments costing me time, money and still a volovo V70 that still stalls. Finally I scheduled another service appointment on 02/27/04 at another "authorized" Volvo center( south shore Volvo) they diagnosed the problem as the throttle body getting oil in it from the backed up breather box. Their solution to the problem was to also clean out the trottle body. This attempt again was a failure because currently, the vehicle still struggles to stay running or stalls every time you slow down. I did write to Volvo in April 2004 and explained my problem with the car as well as provided them with all the documentation of all the repairs that I have incurred to date, but they supplied no explanation nor resolution to the problem. I am frustrated and would like my Volvo fixed as well as restitution for a total $1240. 98 that I have already incurred in useless repair bills. The failure caused the car to rapidly lose speed. Had it happened during heavy traffic and higher speeds then an accident could have occurred. This failure seems extremely premature for this type of part. 80000 miles translates to about 2000 hrs of operation. If this is a normal repair for this type of car then Volvo has a serious problem that should be addressed. I would like to know if NHTSA has any information about this part and its failure rate.
Engine has a random mis-fire related to the cpu. Volvo is aware but has not produced any bulletins for an up-grade. Mis-fire can cause stalls at idle in cold weather and has potential to cause accidents due to stalls in intersections. I believe that this problem exists in all 1998 models with the 190hp turbo engine. It is annoying and dangerous.

Intermittent "stuttering" or "sputtering" problem both at idle and at highway speeds. Feels like fuel injection system is misfiring the engine. Car has never stalled, but numerous times when pressing accelerator from stop, sputtering causes delay in acceleration.
