BMW 325 owners have reported 6 problems related to instrument panel (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Various times I have experienced intermittent issues with my tail lights. I get warnings on my instrument panel but when I check the bulbs they are not burned out. On October 17, 2011, los angeles police pulled me over notifying me that my tail lights were not working. We checked the bulbs and fuses but they were ok. We found that when you slightly touch the harness of the taillight socket that is inside the body panel, the lights go on and off. I did some online research and found that this is a common issue with this model car, BMW e46. On Saturday January 21 I went to santa monica BMW. They said it was not a common issue. Today I just learned about recent NHTSA campaign id number 11v438000. This recall addresses the issues I have been having. However, it is only for models manufactured after September 2001. My vehicle was built in July 2001 but uses the same harness and body panel assembly that has prompted the recall for models built in September 2001. Thus, I believe my vehicle should be recalled as well. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

The contact owns a 2002 BMW 325i. While driving 65 mph, the abs light illuminated and the speedometer stopped functioning. The contact turned the vehicle off and restarted it. After restarting the vehicle, the light was still illuminated and the service engine light illuminated while she was driving home. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealership where the fuel pump was replaced. The dealer advised the contact to replace the abs module but the contact refused that repair. The current mileage was approximately 113,000. The failure mileage was approximately 112,970.
The contact owns a 2004 BMW 325i. The contact stated that the faulty lamp warning indicator would intermittently illuminate on the instrument panel. The electrical harness that plugs into the rear of the lamp harness for the exterior lighting had a faulty ground in the connector. The dealer stated that the wires could not take the heat distribution, which caused the wires to fry inside the connector. The failure also caused the turn signals and rear lamps to not operate correctly. There were no recalls for the failures; however, the contact was able to locate technical service bulletins pertaining to the issues (NHTSA item numbers 10025585 and 10020856). The current and failure mileages were 85,000.

Speedometer reading off by ~5 miles per hour - give or take. Twice requested dealership to correct the issue and was told that BMW allows for a +/ - 10 mph discrepancy. This speed variance or inexact speed information could mislead drivers as to the appropriate speed in icy or rainy weather conditions as well as other instances where speed needs to be understood. Defect needs to be corrected as might violate various state inspection requirements as well.
Since I purchased my BMW 325i (2006) in Aug. 2007 new, I have had problems with a 10% inaccuracy of the speedometer, that the dealership reluctantly replaced (with no improvement) and BMW of north America finally admitting that there is no solution to the problem and I was stuck with the problem. The speedometer is 10% off an actual reading. So if you want to 65 mph and set the speedometer at 65mph you only go 58 mph. In order to go 65mph you have to drive at 73 mph on the speedometer.
