BMW X5 owners have reported 3 problems related to engine head gasket leaking (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Our vehicle is in for the 4th visit for a persistent oil leak. The first 2 visits resulted in a vehicle inspection and cleaning of engine area with no leak found, stating is was most likely left over oil from messy oil change. The 3rd visit resulted in replacing the rear main seal and problem was resolved per dealer. Vehicle continued to leak after we brought it home. 4th visit resulted in replacing oil pan gasket but leaks are now popping up in other areas. BMW engineer has been requested by dealer. In th process the vehicle was damaged for the second time by the dealer requiring body work/paint.

Transmission randomly goes into park when back up or moving forward in idle. Car has also come out of park randomly, with car rolling slightly. Separately, had gasket has leak at 69000 miles.

The contact owns a 2005 BMW X5. After the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed that the vehicle was leaking oil without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the valve cover gasket was leaking oil onto the engine and needed to be replaced, along with the timing chain cover, alternator bracket, and oil pressure switch. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 81,000.
