42 Water Pump problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/09/2015

My vehicles purchased last year from BMW local dealer {jackie cooper imports] is equipped with 8- or 12-cylinder, turbocharged engines . The circuit board for the electric auxiliary water pump overheated. This lead to a smoldering of the pump and an engine compartment . BMW was supposed to notify owners, replace the auxiliary water pump, thermostat, and coolant reservoir free of charge. The two safety recalls related to this problem apparently did not include my vehicle. Ref NHTSA compaign recall #11v521000 and NHTSA compaign recall # 12v161000. I have logged a complaint about this with the dealership, and their recall resolution department in vain. I am being charged for parts and labor which I belief should be free a snoted by the two recalls .

43 Water Pump problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/04/2015

My wife and a toddler were driving home getting off the bridge and about to get on the on ramp to highway in nyc (bqe). All the sudden the car overheated and went into limp mode. Luckily there were no car behind her otherwise would be rear ended. She was able to pull to the right from the left lane and got onto local street to wait for it to cool down. This car had many close calls for serious or fatal accident. This car only has a little ok 40k miles. This is too early for a water pump to fail. This car is out of warranty and the cost of fix will be over $1000. The worst is my wife uses this car for work and drive the kid to school. Can Bmwna be contacted and put this failure into recall. Thanks.

45 Water Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

The circuit board for the electric auxiliary water pump overheated and caused smoldering.

46 Water Pump problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/30/2014

While driving on highway 121 suddenly the lights came on and I was warned that if I don't pull over and reduce my speed my engine will suffer damage. This caused me to swerve and try to take the first exit, which luckily was coming up. There was a liquid discharge under the car. Water pump failed and thermostat burned out . . . Damages over 1000 usd. This seems to be a theme with 3. 0i vehicles of that year. BMW would not repair even though higher cylinder engines are covered under recall.

47 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/29/2014

My 2008 X5 3. 0si started just out of the blue to have this super loud fan noise while driving in town to pick up my kids. It was not even hot outside so I was wondering what's wrong with it. Also got the water overheating warning. Brought the car to the dealer and it was determined that the water pump was faulty. Cost me almost $1400. 00 and the car had only 37000 miles on the clock. Why is there no recall for the 2008 6cylinder engine?.

48 Water Pump problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/22/2014

I was driving the car and I received an overheating signal on the dash. I turn car off and let it cool off but ut did not wokrd. I kept having the same overheating issued. I noticed there is a recall but BMW X5 2010 to 2011 for the same issued of the water pump. I took it to the dealership and the do not want to fix it stating my car is not part of the recall. I argued that is the same make, model and year of the recall. I was told there was nothing hey can do. I called BMW of America and stated the same problem but no help. My concern is if those 2010 to 2011 BMW X5 are having the same problem, why is mine not included in the recall when is has been clearly diagnotic by BMW that the water pump is the problem.

49 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/04/2014

The 2008 X5 3. 0l started to sound like a jet engine with the super loud fan noise. I thought the car was going to blow up. Took the car in for repair, and luckily the engine hadn't overheated yet. They found that the water pump was faulty, which caused the wiring to burn out, and observed oil leakage near engine. If I had driven the car any more, it would have caused significant damage to the engine of the vehicle. BMW service center told me that I have to replace the water pump, thermostat, and other parts including gasket something. Thank you.

50 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

When I was driving around 30 mph and about to merge onto the highway, an orange warning sign came up that the engine was overheating and then immediately afterward a red sign came up stating that the engine was overheated and I could hear the loud noise from the fan. Immediately after that the vehicle stalled and I had to pull over to the shoulder. I waited for about 15 min. And when I restarted the vehicle, the fan was still loud and the red engine overheated sign came up again. I then had the vehicle towed to a repair facility. They diagnosed the issue as a defective electric water pump and said that the water pump and thermostat need to be replaced. The estimate for repair including parts and labor is around $1700. 00. The vehicle is beyond the 4 year, 50000 miles warranty and apparently there are no recalls for this issue. Searching the internet, I am seeing numerous complaints from 2008 BMW X5 owners who experienced this exact same issue and had the same diagnosis. This is a very serious safety issue - when driving on a busy highway and suddenly losing all power in the vehicle, very few drivers would be lucky enough to pull over safely and avoid a serious accident. I request that the NHTSA consider this serious safety issue from a recall perspective due to the potential harm it can do to the lives of motorists who may not be lucky enough to avoid a serious crash. I believe the manufacturer should be held accountable for the basic safety of the vehicle. They should the needful to help owners fix the issue proactively, before it causes harm to more motorists.

51 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/15/2014

While driving at 35 mph a loud noise started coming from engine compartment, sounded as if the fan was running at warp speed. A few miles later a warning came on stating engine was running hot, I pulled off to the side of the road and allowed it to cool down. After it cooled down I drove 2 more miles to my office and called a tow truck to send to BMW dealership. BMW informed me the electric water pump went out and need replacement at a cost of $1400. 00. Internet shows 38,000 recalls of x-5 for water pump problem but just my luck my car is excluded. I am waiting on a response from BMW USA regarding my request to have issue covered. My vehicle has only 40,000 miles and we have already replaced the fuel pump, the fuel pump relay and now the water pump. This car was over $70,000 when purchased and you would think they would stand behind their product.

52 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/15/2014

On February 15, 2014 at approximately 10:00 am, my 2008 X5 3. 0si had an overheating engine problem in the middle of a blizzard-like conditions in the mountains of north carolina where my family and I were vacationing. This was a very unsafe situation for me, my wife and three young children who were accompanying me. The car entered into a "safe mode", slowed down to almost a complete halt, just with enough time for me to pull off to the side of a steep mountain road in the middle of freezing temperatures. Then I had to try to find a safe way out of this situation. We had to stay in the car for several hours trying to keep warm until I could get a towing service to take the car back to the closest BMW service center (85 miles away) and find a car rental so I could get my family to a safe place (I. E. Home, 115 miles away). The service center fixed my car at a cost of $1,400, and they traced the problem back to an electric water pump failure. This is extremely frustrating because the vehicle had manufacturer`s warranty until barely three months ago, and this expensive and vital engine part fails conveniently soon afterwards. This electric water pump ought to have a life expectancy of more than 6 years/69,000 miles. In short, my family and I were put in a dangerous situation, and I had to spend more than $1,800 (including towing and car rental charges) out of my pocket because of a notoriously bad BMW part (the subject of numerous recalls and technical service bulletins in other BMW X5s).

53 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/28/2014

The contact owns a 2008 bwi X5. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The failure was recurring. In addition, the contact stated that the when accelerating, the vehicle would resist and feel as if it was attempting to stall. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the mechanic diagnosed that the exhaust senor and fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000. Updated 3/28/cn the consumer stated the first incident happened in August 2013, with no warning on the highway. It was determined the water pump failed. Updated 04/22/14.

54 Water Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/28/2013

On 10/28/13, I was on a two lane county road, speed limit 45, travelling at 45mph, when the engine overheating light came up on the panel, advising me that the engine was overheating. Shortly thereafter, the warning light advised that the engine had overheated and to pull over ASAP. While trying to find a safe shoulder, the engine shut down, so there was no more power. I was able to get to the side of the road, gliding. While trying to call for assistance, the electrical system shut down, so that I was unable to operate the windows or any other functions. I had the car towed to the dealer. Per the dealer invoice, the electric water pump/coolant pump were defective and needed to be replaced. In addition, due to the incident, the thermostat had to be removed and replaced. The bill was $1136. 77, not including a "dealer goodwill" credit of $268. 59, reflecting 50% of the cost of the new water pump. While the car was at the dealer, I went on line and discovered that there have been dozens upon dozens of reported problems with the BMW water pumps, and that this part has been the subject of recall 11v521000, for 2008 models, and that recalls exist for more recent models. I attempted to discuss the matter with BMW north America customer relations, the supervisor there advised me that the problem was not with BMW, but that the problem was that my VIN number had not been listed by the nstb on the recall, and that it was therefore the government's fault! I urge you to review the blogs noted on arfc. Org regarding 2008 X5 water pump problems. The fact that the car's response to the water pump failure was to shut down with only seconds of warning placed me, and any other driver of this vehicle in a life threatening situation--several of the posts talk about this happening on a busy highway. I could have died. The car should be recalled, and I should be reimbursed.

55 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/20/2013

I was about less than 2 miles away from home and I was driving 35 mph. I heard a loud fan sound and in few sec I got a message in the display board saying engine over heating drive slowly. After few seconds another message showed in red that engine is over heated and the vehicle did not move even pressing the pedal hard. Then I stopped the vehicle by pulling it to the side and let the engine cool for 15 min. Then I drove back home. When I was 50 yards away from home I got those two messages back one after the other. But, I drove it slowly to the drive way my house. Then I called the BMW dealer, let the vehicled towed their and the dealer diagnosed it as vehicle water pump is gone bad and it caused the over heat of the engine. Becuse of this thermo stat is alos gone bad. There is some other part gone bad because of this but I did not remeber it. The dealer told me that it cost me 1700 to fix the issue. I checked on the internet and several tens of people had this issue and needs to be recalled by BMW.

56 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/13/2013

I was driving on the highway at 65mph suddenly the vehicle display the message that the engine temperature was too hot and advise me to pull over. Within 2 seconds, the car slow itself down in in the middle of traffic despite my foot was pressing on the gas pedal. I had to immediately pull over to the shoulder to get out of traffic. I had the car towed to the BMW and it turn out the water pump had stop pumping water to the engine, causing it to overheat. BMW charged me $1200 to fix it bit I feel like there should be a recall for this issue since a quick internet search reveal numerous people who have the exact same problem as mine. I also found out that BMW did issue a recall for the same year and model as mine but only on the less popular, bigger engine version.

57 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/21/2013

This morning when I started the vehicle I noticed a loud sound coming from the bottom of the engine near the pulleys. It sounded if though something was coming a loose. When I got out to check it the sound cleared or toned down. It sounded like it was coming from the water pump. While traveling on the freeway a low coolant light came on. I pulled off and checked the coolant level and it was in between low and max. I filled the coolant level up to max. The low coolant light remained on after parking it for two hours. I'm taking it to the dealer in the morning to see if its what I think it is, ( the water pump ). There should be a recall on this issue , I've read too many complaints. Can anybody help me with any updated info on this?.

58 Water Pump problem of the 2004 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

The BMW X5 is very poorly made and BMW does not stand behind any issues or care. My 2004 BMW X5 has the known jerking at low speeds, turns which feels like you have been hit in the a** end. I also was going to work and lost all my coolant, the water pump and coolant pipe need replaced/repaired which is not a cheap job. . It is more than the value/cost of this vehicle(if done at a BMW dealer). These issues are known and very common. BMW should issue recalls for these problems or give assistance for repairs instead of constantly making excuses and giving reasons on why they will not help! I have been and will continue to do anything I can to get assistance for my repairs and hopefully many others. BMW does not care about their buyers, unless it is a new vehicle and you do all your dealings with a BMW service department which I feel is unfair, customers should be able to choose any good mechanic instead of having to travel to and/or pay BMW outrageous fees for repairs. It is not safe to have these issues and run out of coolant(anywhere anyway from home) or to constantly have the massive jerk with the transmission. BMW needs to issue recalls and stand behind the tranny, coolant pipe, and water pump issues and failures. The BMW is not worth the money, they are made poorly, very expensive to repair, and have horrible customer service. BMW says the "internet and people say alot of things but that does not mean its a problem" and as I said to them. . . When many many people have the same issues then yes, it is a real problem!!!! it is not like people are asking for assistance or recalls on minor or normal repairs and maintenence!!!.

62 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/25/2013

Will in the middle lane of 3 lanes of traffic, the yellow engine overheat light appeared. Within a few minutes that yellow light turned to red engine overheat, turn off the vehicle to cool down. I did my best to exit the highway and pull over without causing an accident. I waited nearly 2 hours before I could get towed off to the side of the highway. I had the vehicle diagnosed and the BMW of austin dealership advised I will need a water pump replaced to the tune of $766!! since my car has over 50k miles, I am outside the warranty. I know there was a recall for the 2010-2011 v8 version of the same car I have for the same faulty part--electric water pump. I believe this same failure affects my 2008 4. 8i X5 sav. Please do something to help those of us who have put our lives at risk on highways with this sudden water pump failures.

63 Water Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/25/2013

Check engine light came on - vehicle stalled abruptly. After some minutes waiting for the car to cool down, the vehicle was able to drive to a nearby parking area. The vehicle would not go further. Contacted nearest dealer who was 345 miles away. They agreed to tow the vehicle to get it fixed. The problem was a faulty water pump. The water pump, coolant and thermostat were replaced under warranty. We paid a deductible and the car was repaired. Judging by the number of complaints about this issue and the existing recall for the same vehicle model years 2010-2011, BMW should extend the recall to all affected e70 (x5) models including this 2008 one. We should not have to pay a deductible on what is clearly a dangerous defect. Had the vehicle been traveling on the highway at speed, an accident could have occurred given the way it stalled.
