I began to make loud squeaking noises when making left and right turns. In addition, as time progressed I would feel pressure when turning the steering wheel. Due to fear of steering wheel not being able to turn, I took the vehicle to the dealership. The dealership said that the vehicle needed a new steering pump and rack. Gm said they would not cover the entire cost. The total cost was $2600 and gm said it would only cover $1600. Owner feels gm should cover the entire cost since this is a safety issue and the car is only 2,000 miles over 50,000 mile warranty. This is not a usual wear and tear car issue.

I was heading out my neighborhood up a hill to make a left turn and all of the sudden the steering wheel would not move and almost caused me to get into a wreck. I already had the steering pump and pinions changed 1 week ago and now this happens. Apparently this is an issue gm knows about and nothing has been done. I have 2 kids and I am concerned about their safety. Not to mention how costly this is and as a single mother I cannot afford to buy another vehicle or repairs, by the way I did just purchase this vehicle 2 weeks ago. Yes I did just purchase it from a dealer.

Car became almost impossible to steer when doing slow turns or in a parking lot. The dealer said it was the power steering pump. It was replaced along with all the other parts and supplies needed. After that it seemed to work okay.
I noticed this problem back in January and it has been more noticeable and bothersome lately. It is hard to make turns in my Buick Enclave when turning at slow speeds (25 mph or less). It is also very hard to turn and park or back out and turn. That really scares me because you have to really fight with it. It is as if there is no power steering yet it has power steering fluid. I have taken my car in for two other recalls and was told it was the power steering pump, or it could be other parts related to the power steering. This could be a very dangerous situation hopefully it won't happen while I am driving at a high speed with my 5 grand children. I called gm and they have no intentions of correcting this problem so the consumers who pay for a high priced car expecting it to last will now have to come out pocket $1500 to repair the problem. This is ridiculous. If they don't repair this problem I will never buy another gm product. I now own 4 and all 4 have had recalls.
When driving at low speed, the power steeting goes out. It requires me to completely stop and manually turn the wheel which is very difficult. There is continue knocking at any speed when making turns. This has been a continual problem for almost 6 months and is getting worse. The car is out of warranty, but after reviewing further online, there is a pending class action suit for this issue. I called gm direct and they said they have received this complaint several times but there are no recalls. As a mother of small children, I am afraid to continue to drive my car for fear of wrecking or being hit with this issue. It is sad that gm will not act on this issue and stand behind their vehicles. If there has been numerous complaints and a class action suit, why will gm not act upon this. Does there have to be more deaths occur to get their attention. The cost of replacing the steering rack and pump is very expensive and should not be at the cost of the consumer for a manufacturer defect. Extremely dissappointed.
Loss of power steering. Power steering pump was replaced at approx. 9000 miles for a failure then under gm warranty. Car now has 62500 and dealer advises pump is bad again. Will not cover replacement even though it has already been replaced once. This appears to be a known safety defect but gm is not issuing a recall and the replacement pumps are no better than the originals. Thank you for your research on the issue and holding gm accountable for the safety issue that many are experiencing.

The steering rack & pump were replaced at 23,000 miles under warranty. Now, at 70,000 miles, it needs to be replaced again ($1900 repair) for the same reason. The steering whines whenever the wheel is turned, and loses power at any time during low speed. Serious safety concern for me and my family! others have had this same issue. Needs to be recalled before someone gets killed.
I own a 2009 Buick Enclave that started experiencing intermittent steering lock-up issues at approximately 55,000 miles. The steering would intermittently 'lock-up' especially at speeds below 35 mph without warning, the problem became much worse over time. We frequently travel to the nc mountains where there are many 2 lane curvy roads going up/down the mountains, the problem was especially noticeable when traveling in the nc mountains. A vehicle having the steering 'lock-up' is a definite safety issue. I had the vehicle repaired by the dealership when it reached 68,295 miles for $2186. 50 due to safety concerns of harming one of my children or wife should a wreck occur due to not being able to steer the vehicle. The repairs consisted of replacing the defective 'steering gear' as well as the power steering pump due to metal shavings from the disintegrating steering gear getting into the power steering pump. In searching encvlaveforum. Net many users complained of the same issue with vehicles in the lambda family (enclave, traverse, acadia). A recall should be issued for this defect.
I was driving my Buick Enclave and I was going about 10 miles turning into traffic and it locked in me I was scared to death!!! I had my kids in the car I only had this car for 30 days I took it back to the dealer am they said it is the steering rack and the steering pump if everyone is having the same problem that mean this parts are defective and should be recalled please help.
Steering locked up while turning at low speed, almost hit another car in the process. Buick knows this is an issue on the Enclave platform, still, no recall. If I did get into an accident and a fatality occurred, litigation would have been in order. Is this what Buick is waiting for? someone to get injured, this is a safety issue. The original sticker price for my 2008 Buick Enclave was north of $40,000, wow and they can't get something as simple as a steering rack and pump right? this needs to be a recall, I just had to pay $2800 to get this fixed, and not really sure if it will or will not happen again in the future. I just can't believe there is no recall for this, apparently Buick does not care one bit about their customers and definitely does not want repeat business. I will tell everyone I know to avoid Buick at every expense and never, never, never buy an Enclave. I am also considering selling the Enclave and buying something that is worth it and safe.
The steering wheel often but not always locks up when driving at low speeds and making sharp turns, for example at a stop sign or making a u turn at a traffic light. It does not matter whether a right or left turn is being made. It takes significant force to turn the wheel to "unstuck" the steering wheel and make the car go in the intended direction, and immediate brake force is often required to avoid hitting a curb or another car that expected me to complete the turn. I took the vehicle to a Buick dealer this week and they supposedly isolated the problem to the steering pump (part 20954812) and steering gear (part 22902260), for a total of $2000 to repair. I believe this to be a safety concern because I have no confidence in my car's ability to go in the direction I intend.
Issue: car makes loud screeching noise, loss of power steering, engine fan constantly running and car a/c heats on one side and cools on the other. Resolution: dealership located leaking gear and pump damaged which caused noise. Replaced power steering gear and power steering pump. Flushed power steering system and evac and recharge a/c system. Issue #6.
Steering has always made a noise like corduroy pants rubbing together and has progressively become more lacks. Also the steering becomes hard to turn at low speeds like turning into a parking spot or making a left hand turn from a stop and requires a lot of effort to turn the vehicle. This could be a very dangerous situation and could cause an accident. I have taken my vehicle to the dealer and they of course replaced the steering rack for 1300 dollars and it did not fix the turning issue. I have to bring it back and I am sure it will need a new steering pump. Help. I have read about this issue online and it seems to be a very common problem with this vehicle. We know three other families with this car and they have all had the steering rack and power steering pump replaced. I think gm should stand behind their vehicles. I have 57,000 miles on my vehicle and of course it is out of warranty. Help!.
Transmission failed 3 weeks out of powertrain warranty and required a rebuild then failed again about a year later. Steering pump and cooling motor failed during warranty period and were replaced and then both failed 18 months later (out of warranty) stabilitrac and check engine lights keep turning on after the dealer has repaired it 3 times (turns on about 30 minutes away from dealer each time). Nhtsa really needs to take action against Buick and gm regarding the 2008 Enclave, it is a lemon and people are being ripped off over it and put at serious risk because of its' short comings.
My 2009 Buick Enclave started out with a feeling in the steering when turning to the limits either left or right which was checked out by the dealership as being nothing. Then the power steering pump started making noises which was determined by the dealership as something the occurs in this type of pump but is not a safety issue. Then the noise became louder and loss of power steering when the engine is initially started and at lower speeds ie in a parking lot. Now there feels like a detent in the steering at the straight foreward position and it is noticeable when turning (on the highway) and takes some strength and awareness to overcome the problem. The dealer advises that there is no recall and the car is no longer covered on warranty.
The steering on my car is almost impossible when I am driving under 15 mph. Places such as parking lots, backing out of my driveway, etc has become dangerous for me to maneuver. I am very concerned for my safety. I took it to the shop today and they're telling me it's a known issue but there is no recall. . . It's going to cost me over $2,000 to fix. The power steering pump and rack need replaced. It's completely ridiculous for Buick to not stand behind this!.
In the last 2 months, I have had multiple problems with the power steering tightening and locking up, narrowly avoiding running off the road or into another vehicle several times. When I took the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic, they declared that the power steering rack had malfunctioned and that there were metal shavings in the power steering pump. Both the power steering rack and pump would need to be replaced. It was also determined that this was not caused by wear and tear. When I researched similar complaints online it appears that this is a recurring problem with the 2008 and 2009 Buick Enclaves due to faulty equipment by gm. I am very concerned that this make result serious accidents and request the NHTSA to look into this matter.
Went to turn left from a slow coast off of a two lane road into a parking lot with traffic coming from opposite direction. The steering got really tight and I needed maximum force from my arms to turn the wheel to get the car out of the way of an oncoming vehicle that had to quickly apply brakes to avoid hitting me. I had just got two new tires when the event occurred and spent the next 10 months with two more tires thinking the tire store had messed up the steering . They looked it over twice and couldn't find any issues. The steering became so the tightness was felt mostly getting into parking spaces at slow speeds. Then, I almost hit a parked car the first week of June when turning left again from not being able to turn the wheel, so I took it to the dealer where they diagnosed a failed steering pump and a leak in the steering rack. GMC paid for the parts and I paid $700. 00 for the labor.
A terrible screeching noise led me to bring my car to the Buick dealer for repair. . . . They replaced the steering gear, the steering pump, fluid, etc. With a cost to me of 1409. 99. Had I not heard the noise, I would have lost steering. . . . . . The car was just out of warranty. . . . Far too early for this to have happened.
Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Buick Enclave. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the steering wheel seized. The contact stated that the failure recurred approximatley 25-40 times. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection where they advised that the steering pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified and stated that there was no recall on the vehicle. The failure mileage was 30,000. Kmj.
I lost my steering with only 400 miles the first time. The power steering pump was replaced. The second time the mileage was 6404 the rack was replaced. The first incident was in florida the second was in new york.
