Cadillac CTS owners have reported 148 problems related to differential unit (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Cadillac CTS based on all problems reported for the CTS.
The rear end differential broke while the car was in motion on the highway. Which made driving the car very unsafe. I pulled over and I got the part repaired by the Cadillac dealership. I have had an on going problem with the front seat heater. When weather is cooler and I activate the seat heater I experienced the seat getting excessively hot and I nearly burn myself. I had to turn off the heater seat and cover the seat so I dont get hurt. This happened while I was driving the vehicle causing me to pull over immediately during to how hot the seat had got. Last but not least, the shifter selector cable detached as I was operating the vehicle on the street (vehicle was in motion) I was driving and pulled up park and notice the shifter knob was moving but the indicator was stuck in the wrong selection. I had to put on emergency break and order a tow to the nearest dealership because the car was unsafe to drive and I didnt know what gear the carbwas in or could I change gears. The manufacturer had recalls for these items on similar vehicles but denied to help me because the recalls are VIN specific which I did not know and my VIN didn't qualify. I am left with a huge car repair bill for defected parts sold when I brought the car.

My Cts-v currently has 56,000 miles and very well cared for. My problem started at 25,xxx miles with a rear seal leak, it was replaced by dealer and 9 months later started leaking again. After the 4th trip to the dealer, they are now telling me it's the rear differential that is a known issue (with recalls on the earlier Cts-v's for the same problems) that needs to be replaced. The problem is there are no rear differentials! gm has discontinued the part ( my car is 6 1/2 years old and they made this car through 2015 and gm says the part is discontinued! the dealership has informed me that the care is unsafe to drive and suggest I pick the car up on a flat bed truck and take back home and garage it.

My 2011 Cts-v rear differential has now failed for the second time. First off, my car has been babied and extremely well taken care of. The differential first failed at approximately 17,500 miles and now this second time at approximately 38,900 miles. Both times the differential has started to make whining and/or growling noises that progressively get worse. My dealership replaced the first one and has had the second one back ordered now for 2 months (none in inventory & no estimated shipment). This is a well reported issue (109 occurrences found on line) for these cars. Why has Cadillac not issued a recall and affected a fix? what are the NHTSA investigation results?.
Complete rear differential assy failure, at my expense of 4590. 00 gm did kick in 2500. 00 but even with the repair there is no fix for the replacement that is currently being fixed. A full recall with repair, reimbursement or buy out should be demanded, this is a life and death safety issue.
Axle half shaft bolts backed out breaking mating gears in differential. Vehicle was in motion when a vibration that felt like a wheel was extremely out of balance started. The vehicle was pulled over to inspect. After seeing nothing I attempted to drive away so it was put in drive and as the brake was released the gears broke disabling the vehicle necessitating a flat bed tow to the dealer.
Please know the car is in mint condition and has never been in an accident. This is my dream car and stays well kept in my garage. It only has 19,500 miles on it. Rear differential whines or howls between 40-70mpg when under light load (like cruising or using cruise control) in 4th, 5th, and 6th gear.
The contact owns a 2005 Cadillac Cts. The contact stated that the differential leaked and the vehicle became inoperable without warning. There was an abnormal sound that came from the differential. Cole Buick GMC confirmed that the VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 07v589000 (power train). The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

The gm rear differential is defective on this 2011 Cadillac Cts I own. Nhtsa did an investigation on these rear differentials to include the 2004 to 2007 rear ends. The same rear end is on Cadillac sts, Cts-v and these rear ends were continued to be placed by gm, without fix, in Cadillac Cts until 2013. Same design, same mechanical parts. My car is a 2011 that just had a new rear differential from gm put in to solve its issues. After installation, the same problems exist with a roaring and thumping noise that has been verified by repair shops coming from the old and new rear differential. These issues are either with the side differential carrier bearings and/or the ring and pinion system. Gm has never provided a fix except to recommend a different viscosity of fluid that only quietens down the noise. Eventually, the rear ends have catastrophic failure and have caused, as investigated by the NHTSA, the car to spin and injury or worse result. This issue has never been fixed by gm and they continue to sell and install rear differentials for which there is no fix. I discussed this also at length with service manager of sewell Cadillac in dallas texas and they state that they replace these rears all of the time and that there is not fix for them by gm. I have enclosed my complaint to the repair shop that put the new gm rear end on my car without exercising their due diligence and research as to installing a major component on a car for which there is no fix by gm and the distinct possibility of a failure that would cause injury or death.
Every time the automatic transmission is put in reverse and the vehicle wheels turned sharply to right or left, such as in backing- out of a tight parking space, the car labors to move backwards and binding noises emanate from differential or rear axle area of the car. This condition lessens and completely disappears as the steering wheel is returned to the straight forward or straight back position. I believe this condition has existed in earlier models of my vehicle and has been the subject of a recall. This malfunction has existed ever since I purchased the used car in June of 2016. Other than the described issue, the car has served me well.
2007 Cadillac Cts began making a loud humming noise. Had the rear driver side wheel bearing changed but the noise continued. On way home from work the following day on i75 driving 70mph which is the speed limit, the car started making a loud clunking sound and was nearly impossible to steer. Nearly had accident while trying to get to shoulder of road. Was informed by mechanic that "the rear end went out of your car because you didn't have any differential fluid left in it" when I asked how that could happen the mechanic said there must have been a leak of some kind. Started researching and found there was a recall on the car 4 years before I purchased it. When I called gm at 800-458-8006 I was told by automated phone system there is an open recall on my vehicle #07204e and 10355c so asked to speak with a representative and the lady from manilla in the philippines (because that's where their customer care center is???) informed me that there is "no open recall on your car" even after I tried to explain the automated service had just given me 2 open recall numbers for my VIN # . . . She said she couldn't help me find service for my car.

My Cadillac Cts 2011 has had a failure in the rear differential, twice since I have owned it. The first time was sept 2013 and the entire rear differential had to be replaced, and now Jan 2016, the exact same issue has occurred. There is a service bulletin on the vehicle of sb11084 and an NHTSA item number 10038765. It is a same that this is a know problem and a recall has not been generated. The vehicle will be out of the powertrain warranty at the end of February so unless a recall is done, this will not be covered on its next failure in a year.
On 4/02/2015 I was driving my vehicle when suddenly I heard a explosion type sound and it would not move. I was doing approximately 30 to 35 mph. I pulled to the side of the road to inspect the vehicle when I saw oil coming out from the back of the car I called aaa and they towed me to my home were I did research and found that Cadillac Cts from 2005-2007 were having problems with the rear differential. So I contacted Cadillac div. Directly and was given a case # 71-1463000661 they contacted coral Cadillac dealer and they came picked up my car and had it inspected they confirmed that the car has powertrain problems but the mechanic says that there is a possibility they will not cover the fees to repair it due to the VIN # of my vehicle does not have a recall for that issue> at this point I do not understand my car has experienced everything in the original recall for that make, model and year. Please help. . . . .

The contact owns a 2006 Cadillac Cts. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle vibrated violently and a loud grinding noise was heard from the rear differential. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the rear differential needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 71,536.
I am concerned about a know differential issue with the Cadillac Cts. In forums every where I am reading that the differential first leaks and then grenades. I know you are only requesting information when it grenades, but I think issues should be stated immediately! I don't want to be driving down the road with children in the car and have problems then. I contacted Cadillac first and received the heisman stiff arm. I think this is a significant flaw in the Cts dating back to 2004 and should have a recall!.
Shifting gears was accompanied by clunking in rear differential. This occurred when shifting or when leatting off the accelerator. In March of 2014 a whining also accompanied driving at speeds of 50 - 70 mph. My Cadillac dealer replaced the differential with a new one under a private warranty program. Within 2 weeks the differential was again making the same noises. Dealer said that Cadillac would not do anything about the problem. Note: servicing mechanic noted after changing the differential fluid, that the fluid taken from the newly installed differential was burnt black.
Had my cruise control set at 70 mph for highway driving when I heard a psshhh sound and cruise control broke violently and smelled burnt rubber with smoke coming from back end of car. Pulled over immediately and car smoke from back end and smell only increased. Thought for sure I had a tire blowout. Walked around car and nothing wrong with tires. Had car towed to an auto repair place and am told that the rear differential went out. I have since investigated and found many, many forums about this issue. There are no recalls for this particular model but a certain recall for 2005 models. This situation could have been deadly and I feel both fortunate and upset with gm that such a problem has been so commonly noted but with no "real" resolve. The auto repair place has called around and this is a special part that is not available in my state and a new one costs an estimated $1,200. With so many issues with models 2004-2006 how come there is no recall for 2004 and only a lesser degree of a recall for 2005?.

The rear differential routinely makes loud grinding and clunking noises when making slow turns at parking lot speeds when cool and just starting to be operated. This problems was been in for service 3 times and the dealer states it is normal and an expected thing that may occur. I disagree, grinding gears and/or clutches are not normal or safe. My car was purchased new on 10/30/09 1st service came on 10/25/13 at 36,605 miles the problem was described at the service appt to "diagnose rubbing noise when making slow sharp turns, goes away after warmed up. Noise comes from rear of vehicle. " the resolution at the time was to do "as per document #3402587 flushed gear oil from rear diff and replaced with an updated fluid. 2nd service came on 3/21/17 at 64,269 miles the problem was described at the service appt to "diagnose gravely grinding sound from rear of vehicle when making tight turns at parking speeds. Also noticeable 25-30 mph. " the diagnosis and resolution this time was again "test drove for grinding noise while making tight turns. Was able to duplicate concern found coming from rear diff. Per doc id 4013532 recommend servicing rear diff with new fluid. New fluid has additive that will last longer and does not break down over time. Serviced rear diff and test drove found noise went away, no other repair needed. " 3rd service came at 6/18/18, at 71,678 miles. The car is presently in the shop for diagnosis and service. This is only 7,396 miles since the prior service. The problem was described as "inspect for gravely sound when making turns **rear diff service done for this ro#394816 3/22/17 #881. " the problem I have with this is that this is not a normal and expected problem and could be very dangerous if the rear transaxle fails while driving at speed due to a gear or clutch failure. Gm knows of this problem based on the fact they have 2+ bull.

I was traveling on the interstate when it felt like someone had hit us from behind except there was no one there. I saw smoke coming from the back end of car and it smelled like something was burning. I pulled off to the side and stopped my vehicle. After stopping the car it I could no longer get it to move forward. It acted like it was not able to go into gear. Had a tow truck haul it home from el centro, calif to yuma, az. The car had to literally be dragged onto the tow truck cause the rear wheels were frozen in place. Luckily the wheels didnt cease while we were still moving. After removal of differential we discovered it was bone dry. I had replace a bushing not to long ago but saw no sign of leaks. I purchased the 2005 Cts new from a dealer in yuma and never received any notice of a recall for the seals. Or for anything.
Failure of rear differential rear axle seals.
2005 Cadillac Cts-v rear differential whine. The rear differential on my Cadillac Cts-v went out. Metal shavings were found in the diff fluid. I took the Cts-v into the dealership to get a warranty repair done.
The contact owns a 2005 Cadillac Cts. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds and making a turn, he would notice a loud grinding noise coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who informed the contact that the noise was due to a leak in the seal located in the differential. The vehicle had not been repaired for the seal. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
The contact owns a 2010 Cadillac Cts. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, she heard a loud bang and the wheels locked. The vehicle then spun out of control through three lanes of traffic to the shoulder. There was no accident. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the rear differential had cracked and the front differential had a leak and was pouring out oil which caused the failure. The dealer stated that the rear and front differentials needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current and failure mileages were approximately 20,000.

Rear differential of my Cadillac Cts-v has begun to whine at 70,000 miles, dealer says the only option to fix it is to replace.
2006 Cadillac Cts-v differential problem.
I was driving my 09 Cts-4 w/ 20,000 miles on 12-12-09 @ 40 mph when I heard a loud boom from the rear and the rear wheels locked. This caused a huge jerk and several skips on the road before coming to rest after a 150 ft skid (paced off skid marks) . When I tried to drive the car from it's stuck position from the middle of the road, the exact same thing occurred @ 5 mph. The car was towed to a dealer. Gm authorized the dealer to replace the rear differential assembly under warranty sight unseen. The dealer did not even remove the differential first to determine the damage or diagnose the cause. The service manager said there was no sign of fluid leakage and that the differential was full of fluid when it was removed. The differential has been replaced and there has been no problem since. Fortunately the car did not skid off the road. Had other cars been on the road, a crash would have occurred.
I own a 2005 Cadillac Cts with a 3. 7 liter engine, and automatic transmission. I am the second owner, and purchased this vehicle when it had 55,978 miles on it. After driving the car for less then 2 years, it developed a noise coming from the back (rear end). I brought the car to my local Cadillac dealer. After a road test and inspection, the dealer determined that the problem was the rear differential, and it would need to be replaced at a cost of about $1700. 00. I've owned many used cars over the past 30 years, some with over 100,000 miles on them, and I've never, never needed a new rear differential on any vehicle that I've ever owned! I understand that this is a common problem with this model. The dealer stated that the seals were good, and that all of the fluids were at the correct levels in the differential, and that the earlier Cts models had experienced problems with differentials, but that the problem was rectified with the 2005 model. Apparently it would seem that there are also problems with the 2005 model differential as well!.

I have a 2004 Cadillac Cts 3. 6l. I purchased the car with 28,000 mile on it and have noticed a whining and humming noise coming from the rear end. I brushed it off thinking it would not be anything. This letter is pleading to be released from lease agreement and refunded the money invested in my car. I?m no longer happy with the quality of the Cadillac Cts and the number of recalls associated with these vehicles. In essence, I have been leased two new vehicles that were lemons according to lemon laws in the state of virginia. I have had the same safety problem repaired more than three times with both cars. At this point, I am truly nervous to drive my car, more so after reading the many reports of people experiencing car fires, suddenly losing control of their car on the highway, and gears locking up. Most importantly, the car is not safe and I?m scared to continue to subject myself and young children to possible injuries because of the power drain safety problems I?ve experienced before and after the recall. To date, my 2007 Cts has been repaired 4 times for the axle/differential. I?m not an expert but in my findings, the power train deals with differential unit, axle assembly, shaft seal leak, and the automatic transmission. Luckily, these repairs were covered under the warranty. However, the service department is just applying a band aid to the situation. I?m concerned about what might happen next time and who will be responsible for future expenses when the warranty expires. As a result of all this, I would like to be released from the remainder of my lease agreement and refunded the payments made to gmac due to the lemon law. I have never been late on making payments on my cars. As of June 2008, I have paid $14,187. 80 towards my 2007 Cts and look forward to being compensated for a car not mechanically suitable to drive. Your response will be greatly appreciated. Should you need additional information, I can be reached at 301-332-4329. Thanks in advance for time and attention on this matter. Respectfully, lajuan howard.
This complaint is to ensure that all of the following Cadillac modes have been removed, recalled, repaired from the new/used automotive dealerships, auto auctions, etc. 2007 Cadillac Cts, sts, srx.
The contact owns a 2004 Cadillac Cts. The contact purchased her vehicle with numerous failures. She stated that the recall repair should have been performed prior to the sale of the vehicle. The contact experienced several issues with the front end suspension, steering wheel shaft, and rear differential. She was informed to take the vehicle to another location because it was under warranty; however, due to the number of failures, the vehicle was not repaired at all. The dealer does not want the contact to trade the vehicle in or take it back. The contact believes that the vehicle is a lemon. The failure mileage was 34,000.
Four (4) attempts to correct drive train issues (limited slip differential).
2006 Cadillac Cts rear differential failure during morning commute failed in heavy traffic and slippery conditions with no prior warning. There was an immediate loss of forward motion and vehicle control. I was able to regain control and continue directly to the dealer and left the car. The car is current at the dealer awaiting parts.
Cadillac Cts 2007 rear differential broke was driving on the high way and suddenly lost control of the car. The back wheels locked completely. No apparent trigger. Put on brakes (I was scared I was close to the edge of the overpass), shut off the car and the smoke dissipated. No warning at all; no other damage but quite terrifying. Cadillac was extremely responsive and has replaced the rear differential.
