Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System Problems of Cadillac Deville

The contact owns a 2005 Cadillac Deville. The contact stated that the power steering fails when driving through any amount of water, including small puddles. The vehicle becomes hard to control and the failure only occurs while driving at any speed through water. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that several other customers have reported the same failure, however, the dealer did not determine the cause of failure or repair the contacts vehicle. The current mileage was 45,000 and failure mileage was 17,000. Updated 10/03/07.

: the contact stated while parking the vehicle , the power steering fails. The vehicle was driven 10-15 miles before the incident. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where they replaced the power steering pump, rack and pinion, and pressure hose, but the problem persists.

While driving, the power steering went out while trying to make a turn. The dealer could not find any defects . The consumer took the vehicle home and it occurred again. It is now with the dealer again and they will try to contact the manufacturer for further details.

Power steering stops working with low speed turns. Both left and right turns. For a bout 3-5 seconds you must steer manually. Last occurence happened in a rain storm. Cadillac dealer(smith-gray in meadville, PA) could not find the problem. This is my second report. ('98 Deville).

When making a left turn at slow speed power steering malfunctions for a few seconds making it very difficult to maintain control of the car. This occurred about 3-4 times in the last two years. Other times it operates normally.

While driving at low speeds and when making a left hand turn, vehicle would lose power/steering, and would not return when steering wheel was turned back to forward driving position.

When making left hand turns, would lose power steering. The vehicle would be inoperative. This problem can occur while driving at various speeds. Have been in contact with the dealership.

While driving 45 mph power steering went out. Vehicle has not been examined by dealer yet.

Intermittent losses of power steering when making left turns.

While driving in wet weather, lost power steering assist by belt slipping when wet. Dealer claimed this was maintenance issue and replaced what he said was a "worn out belt".

This automobile loses power steering assist when turning and water is splashed under the front of the car. Steering failure has happened on several occasions and is very dangerous in turns when you need power assist most. I have not contacted the dealer since I feel it is a design problem and not a routine maintenance issue.

While driving in rain or soon after it rains, the power steering pump drive becomes wet and slips when the steering wheel is turned causing difficulty steering and near crashes on three occasions.

Experiences complete loss of power steering under wet conditions.

When driving vehicle in wet wether the vehicle loses all power steering and the wheel locks up, causing the driver to lose steering when vehicle goes around the corner. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said that the power steering goes out when driving through water. The dealer fixed the problem, but driver says that this is a safety hazard.

Loses power steering after driving over a puddle before or after the rain.

Under wet road conditions consumer turned a corner and the power steering went out, vehicle was very hard to steer.

Power steering failed 3 times.

When hitting a 2-3 " deep water puddle at 10 mph, power steering locks up for several seconds.

Power steering fluid leak.

Power steering unit fails during inclement weather, making it very difficult to steer.

While making a turn power steering was gone. Consumer had to fight steering wheel to gain control.

When driving under wet conditions and water gets to the underbody of the vehicle, there is a loss of power steering. Dealer has seen vehicle. And said the vehicle needed a shield.
