I have a 2004 Escalade ext and approx. 1 year ago the speedometer stopped working. I contacted Cadillac and was told it was my problem as the warranty was up. I just read in a car magazine that my year of Escalade is listed as a bad vehicle to purchase due to speedometer breakdowns. Cadillac wants over $500 to repair this and it has been an issue they have known about for several years.

The contact owns a 2004 Cadillac Escalade. The contact stated that the entire instrument panel on the vehicle became inoperable, including the speedometer. The dealer stated that there were no recalls; however, the manufacturer was aware of the failures and stated that Cadillac would replace the instrument panel for free on vehicles with less than 75,000 miles. Speedometer sticks and is not accurate. There is a policy set up to fix only those vehicles under 70000 miles. Why is my vehicle being excluded? I have 88,000 miles on my 2004 Cadillac Escalade esv. The dealer, key Cadillac in edina minnesota will not cover the repair. A broken speedometer that has been proven to be a manufacturer defect is a safety issue. A recall of this problem is justified.

2004 Escalade esv; speedometer at about 70,000 miles began to go haywire, sometimes sticking on 0mph other times on 140mph. After a few days of this it stopped working all together. I took the car into a dealership for an electrical issue and told them to please look at the speedometer because its not working. They refused to fix it saying it had more than 70,000 mi. . . That was 2008 and it hasn't worked since. I estimate my speed by the tachometer (not safe). . . Original broken part is still installed. . . I am the original owner of this vehicle.

I am the owner of a 2004 Cadillac Escalade and my speedometer has quit working it started malfunctioning/sticking, not showing correct speed on approximately February 27, 09 as of today it has quit working all together. When I called the local dealership (red noland Cadillac) I was advised the cost to repair the speedometer cluster would be approximately $370. And because I have aprox 72,000 miles on my vehicle the special bulletin that was issued by gm has expired. I asked the dealership if there were any exceptions to the special bulletin since I am only 2,000 miles over the threshold, I was told that if I was the original owner of the vehicle they could help me, but since I am not there was nothing they could do for me.

The failure caused the speedometer, fuel gauge, and tachometer to display the incorrect readings and fail completely. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer (hendrick and carrey Cadillac, 101 team hendrick way #101, cary, nc 27511) and was informed that the failure was a known issue; however, the contact missed the special roll out program to get the vehicle repaired. The manufacturer stated that nothing could be done and referred the contact back to the dealer. The failure mileage was 62,000.

The Cadillac dealer and the manufacturer stated that since his vehicle is out of warranty, it would cost $100 to inspect the vehicle and $500 to replace the speedometer. The contact stated that there are numerous complaints for this component, however, general motors refuses to do anything.
