37 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1997 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 12/05/2014

Main brake line that feeds the rear brakes failed on my truck while I was at a gm dealer parking lot. The brake line rotted away. Had the brake line broke a few minutes earlier I could have been killed while getting off of the interstate and not being able to stop! when this brake line burst I lost all stopping ability.

39 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 11/19/2014

I took the vehicle to the shop for a safety inspection. They found that the metal brake lines had rusted through and were leaking. Fortunately this problem was discovered in the shop, avoiding a possibly catastrophic brake failure while driving. I had the front lines replaced by the shop at a cost of $581. 50, and I am replacing the rear lines myself. I am filing this complaint to document the problem as it relates to previous requests to gm by the NHTSA to issue a recall on these vehicles for this problem.

40 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 11/16/2014

My fiancee was on way home from work and was caught in stop and go traffic (thank god she wasnt going speed limit) and the brakes went completely out. Went completely to the floor and bumped a vehicle in front of her 3 times before she got it to stop. No damage was done and she was ok. Had the truck towed home and pulled into my garage to find the brake lines under the cab was severly rusted and 1 line had a stream of brake fluid spraying out from it. Now I will be spending the next few days replacing new lines threw the whole brake system front to back.

41 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 11/14/2014

Steel brake line failure/rupture under little to no braking. In a parking lot, brake pedal went to floor. I immediately noticed the brake line cluster on the driver's side coming from engine compartment, heavily rusted along the frame rail. This is where the rupture occurred. Thankfully I just dropped off my three kids and this happened before loading the bed with a cord of oak firewood. I've worked on vehicles for 20+ years and have never seen brake lines rust like this. Normal road salt has never impacted any other vehicle I have owned and maintained over the years. I guess it was cheaper for gm to use aluminized steel rather than stainless at the factory. If my truck was loaded with firewood, and my three kids, the end result would have undoubtedly been catastrophic.

42 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 11/09/2014

Driver swerved in front of two cars in front of me causing them to brake hard. When I braked the brake pedal went to the floor at 70 mph. I swerved in to the emergency lane to avoid hitting the vehicles in front of me. I kept the pedal pressed and engaged the parking brake while down shifting the truck from drive to 3, 2 then 1st. I then placed the truck in neutral and got the vehicle stopped. Upon inspection on the side of the road I found one of the rear steel brake lines had burst.

43 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 11/05/2014

Brake lines just went, luckey they did when I first started truck up, they were rusted out. As I have come to learn, there has been many cases of this problem, I know of many cars and trucks that are 20 years old that haven't had rusted brake lines. I feel there should be something done about this, before it creates a major problem. It also cost 1000 dollars to repair lines, which I think is way to much.

44 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

Braking downhill at intersection red light. The rear brake line burst due to rusting. Luckily I slowed enough not to rear end the vehicles stop at the red light. Had the truck towed to repair shop. Replaced all brake lines. Checked online and saw many complaints about this problem with gm pickup trucks. Gm never issued a recall for the problem.

45 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 11/01/2014

Had been duck hunting with my grandsons pulled into my driveway and started backing my truck into garage with boat attached and brake pedal went to floor. At that point I had no brakes at all. Had to push parking brake to stop truck. When I got out I saw puddle of liquid on driveway ( brake fluid) . I looked under truck and saw that the brake line under the drivers floor area is rusted and blew out. I just thank god that it happened when it did and not as my grandsons and I was going down highway. I got on internet and I see that there is many other people haveing same issue with brake lines on chevy trucks. I just must ask how many people have to get hurt or die before gm fixs this problem???? I think it is time for them to step up and take care of this . . .

46 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 10/15/2014

I brought my 2001 Chevrolet to get new brakes on the rear. After the tech installed them he took the truck for a test run. He said that the brake pedal went to the floor and he didn't have brakes. He stated that the brake line had rusted through. He said that all 4 needed to be replaced. He said that these gm pick-ups are known to have this problem. We walked out with a huge bill. Luckily they didn't fail while I was driving 70 mph or while towing our camper!.

47 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 10/09/2014

Applied the brakes and the brake pedal went all the way down and vehicle wouldn't stop, it leaked all the break fluid, brake lines rusted.

48 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 10/06/2014

While driving at 45 mph I applied pressure to brake pedal in order to stop for slowing traffic. The pedal went all the way to the floor and the vehicle failed to stop as it normally would. I was able to steer toward the shoulder of the roadway to avoid a rear end collision with the vehicle in front of me. Inspection of the truck revealed severely corroded brake lines where a failure of the brake line resulted in complete brake failure and loss of brake system pressure. Corrosion of the brake lines and associated hardware far surpasses the level of corrosion of other parts on the underside of the truck.

49 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1998 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 10/04/2014

We were going to a friends house in our 1998 chevy truck. The pedal went down to the ground. We brought the truck in and there was a leak in the brake line for the rear brakes. We replaced the brake lines. Subsequently, I put the car up to see how the front brake lines look. They are almost rotted through. We now need to replace the front brake lines. Chevy should find out why the truck looks so bad; the doors are all rotting away also.

50 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 10/03/2014

Complete break failure, coming to stop sign at intersection. Brake pedal went to floor without warning or notice of a problem from dash. Coasted to stop and put transmission into park to complete the stop. Inspection after the incident, found major brake line corrosion (steel and rubber ) through out the vehicle. This vehicle was on it's way to the turnpike, for the trip home just prior to this incident.

51 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 09/24/2014

While driving lost brakes , pedal went right to the floor . Had to apply emergency brakes to stop. Brake line blew .

52 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1999 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 09/11/2014

Driving about 30 mph and approaching stopped traffic at a red light hit brakes to stop and pedal went to the floor with greatly reduced stopping ability. Had to steer off the road to avoid a rear-end collision. This is second time with brake line failure in a couple of years. I spent 30 + years full time, in-house as self-employed engineering consultant at the dayton, ohio gm / delco / delphi facilities and I know gm can do better. 10 siblings and we all have been gm customers - net research indicated $40 cost increase to go stainless steel on brake lines. ( only the most important safety feature on the vehicle ) gentlemen & ladies ? r e a l l y ! !.

53 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 09/02/2014

Brakes failed due to rusting brake lines.

54 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2000 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 09/02/2014

As I was about to put my vehicle in reverse, and back out of my driveway, I pressed down on the brake pedal, and it went right to the floor. I tried pressing it again, and it went to the floor again. Upon inspection under the vehicle, I discovered that one of the brake lines had rusted through and burst. Thank god that I was not actually in motion when this happened, as I need to back into a very busy street (actually, it's a highway) and there is no telling what could have happened. This is not an isolated incident, as I have come across numerous complaints on the internet, and actually I've had to replace a different brake line that was rusted through several months ago. Apparently, Chevrolet does not think this is something that needs to be taken care of. They are wrong!.

55 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 08/29/2014

Going out of drive brake pedal went to floor. Later turned out to be a brake line ruptured from being corroded. Truck rolled backwards and struck a tree causing minor damage to the bumper. Not reported to insurance because deductible higher than damage. This failure of the break line happened once before in 10/2009. Luckily no injuries but the number of these incidents point to a hazardous flaw that gm should address.

56 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 08/21/2014

Brake line rusted through and all stopping power was lost causing vehicle to run a red light. After having repairs done, it has now happened again.

57 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 08/16/2014

My son and I were going home from a day of hunting when we started going down a large curvy hill (back road) when no warning, brakes starting going out. The pedal became very spongy and I pushed it all the way to floor to slow down and down shifted to first gear to get to bottom of hill. It was scary for both of us, it reminded me from a scene from a movie unfortunately this was no movie. The truck has less than 100,000 miles on it and has been babied in a garage and serviced regularly. Apparently I am one of many that have experienced this problem of rusty brake lines. I am very disappointed in the quality of materials that gm has used on brake lines. In hindsight I am not surprised from gm.

58 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 08/16/2014

I applied the brakes to stop at a stop sign in a parking lot. The brake pedal went to the floor. I went through the stop sign. Another vehicle had to slam on its brakes to avoid hitting me. The emergency brake is useless for stopping the vehicle in this type of situation because its foot pedal is positioned so high you cannot step on it in time. The problem was caused by failure of a rusted through steel brake line that ran from the abs module to the rear of the vehicle. It provided the hydraulic pressure for both rear brakes. The point where it rusted through is above the gas tank cover and not visible for inspection. I realize that the truck is 11 years old and has been used in the northeast but it does not have any serious body rust and has received reasonable care. It also has relatively low mileage. The "dual diagonal brake system" did not function to provide adequate braking action. It provided no noticeable braking action. This is about as serious a safety defect as I can imagine. I am lucky it happened at low speed and I was not involved in a collision.

59 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 08/09/2014

Brakes failed. Brake lines broke due to rust.

60 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 08/09/2014

I was approaching MD highway 97 on nicodemus road when I depressed the brake pedal, which went to the floor with no braking effect. Fortunately no vehicle was coming as I could not stop. The parking brake was insufficent for stopping the truck. I finally had to put the transmission in reverse to stop. One of the brake lines near the abs unit had burst due to rust. All of the lines at that location were rusty. I replaced all lines with stainless steel lines from an after-market supplier. I see that the fuel lines near that location are also rusty and will need to be replaced.

61 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 08/07/2014

I was getting ready to stop at a red light when the brakes on the truck failed. The pedal went straight to the floor when pressed. After parking the truck and looking at the brake line (metal line) above the rear-end had rusted causing the tube to weaken and crack.

62 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

Brake pedal went soft and went to floor. Vehicle had slow stopping ability, brake line to rear rotted and leaked. 2 weeks later same thing happened and a front line broke. Now changing all lines. R.

63 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

While driving on a city street, I came to a stop sign and applied my brakes. The brakes failed and the brake pedal went completely to the floor. The truck came to a gradual stop, taking about 4 to 5 times the normal distance it should have required. I ended up partly in the intersection before the truck stopped. Fortunately, no other vehicles were at the intersection when I arrived. Prior to this failure, there was absolutely no warning signs that the brakes had failed. The brake warning indicator did not come on until after the brakes failed and there was no change in the functioning of the brakes before the failure to give any indication that there was a problem. I live in a mountainous region and I am very thankful that the brakes failed while driving at a low speed, on a relatively flat road, at an intersection with no cars present. If I had been driving at a higher rate of speed on the main roads which are curvy and steep in this area or had to stop suddenly, the outcome could have, and probably would have, been very different and tragic. The truck was repaired at the nearest Chevrolet dealership. The cost of replacing the brake lines came to $1,760. 27. The service department stated the failure was caused by rusted brake lines. It is noteworthy that this same dealership replaced by brake disks less than 15 months prior to this incident and they did not notice that the lines were rusted at that time. I have owned 6 vehicles and there have been defects in many of these vehicles, but none of the defects were as serious or had the potential danger than this one which caused the brake failure.

64 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 07/19/2014

Pedel went to the floor, rusted brake line, got to replace 3 of the lines. . .

65 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 07/18/2014

Rusted brake lines caused a near accident when the line broke, resulting in loss of braking abilities.

66 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1999 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 07/18/2014

Rear driver side brake line burst during braking at 40 mph. Swerved to avoid a collision. Extremely corroded brake lines upon investigation.

67 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 07/16/2014

Driving truck out of parking area at house entering street and both brake lines supply to abs broke. This left me with no brakes to front or back. Just enough brake fluid to slow down to make the turn back into parking area behind my house. Had to use parking brake to fully stop truck. Called for a flat bed truck to haul my truck to local auto shop to have brakes repaired. The whole brake system lines had to be replaced ,corrosion problem !. $1000 brake line repair. Could have been a very dangerous time if I was on the busy street one more block farther in my travel. Second time brake line broke on this truck. ^ months ago replaced one line on back brake, same problem. Now lines under drivers cab both broke under pedal stress. This should never happen on both lines. Had many other trucks and cars and never saw such poor quality brake lines. If this happened on highway I may not be able to tell about it. Wife was in truck also and pulling a 14ft boat. Any damages or bodily injury would be put on gm and their faulty product selection of brake lines. Should be a recall years ago. Thousands of gm truck owners have problems. Members of my family have had same brake line problems. Only 70,000 miles on truck.

68 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2000 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 07/15/2014

Pulling boat, come down hill to stop sign, brake pedal bottomed out, hit the park brake truck stopped as two vehicles were at intersection. Brake line busted, heard of a recall on this problem, is it real or not. Good way to get killed.

69 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 07/11/2014

Coming to an intersection 10 mph, brake paddle went to floor. Emergency brake saved me. Rotten brake lines were the cause of the failure. One year later four more brake llines replaced because of leaks. All four were rusted out.

70 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 07/07/2014

During deceleration the brake pedal exhibited little pressure and traveled to the floor. Braking ability was severely compromised but the vehicle came to a stop. Inspection of the undercarriage revealed a severely corroded brake line located just aft of the cab which had ruptured and released a significant amount of brake fluid.
