I only drive this 2002 Chevrolet Astro van in our small town because I am terrified to drive it on expressways or in heavy traffic because the distributor cap collected moisture and the engine stopped in heavy traffic almost causing terrible accidents three times in the past 8 months. Last week I drove the van into town. I keep a close watch on all the gauges because of the previous problems. When I left the house all the gauges on the dash were working and the battery was between 12-14 volts. I noticed within 5 miles the battery volts were decreasing so I headed for home. By the time I reached home (10 miles all total), the volt meter was in the red zone, all the gauges (except for oil pressure) and speedometer were not working and, I believe, the headlights were out. I pulled the van into the drive and shut it off. I had difficulty opening the door (power locks) to get out. The van would not start again. The van is under warranty so I called courtesy Chevrolet who had the van towed in for service. They called me the following Monday to tell me they replaced the alternator, computer and battery and the van was ready but they had broken the radio and would replace it on Tuesday. I said fine and I would pick it up on Wednesday (February 9, 2005). Courtesy Chevrolet called me on Tuesday and told me not to come on Wednesday because the voltage problem was not corrected and they would call me when the van was ready. They called on February 10, 2005 to say the alternator was bad and had been replaced a second time.

Have brought van in 4 times in 4 years about electrical problems. Smelling wires burning. Have gone through 6 batteries in 4 years. Replaced alternator. Radio/cd has been replaced. New cd stoped working after 1 week of being replaced. Dealer refuses to replace again. Radio, overhead digital temp & misc gages goes out, speedometor, battery, fuel, and odomoter quits, only the oil still works. Abs breaking probems, pedel to floor, have ran intersections due to this. Have had minor dings to bumper because it rolled to stops at low speeds. Loud clunk in rear when stopped too. Dealer refused to call it a lemon. Refused to help fix because its a lease. Also handle over passenger airbag disintegrated in 3rd year, and now the driver arm rest is split in 4th year.

The captioned vehicle on 7/27/99 was towed to the dealer as a result of a dangerous safety hazzard. The acid from the battery leaked over a period of time and corroded the the battery tray, the cable and all associated parts. The system was replaced by the dealer under warranty. At a cost of $230. 00. On 9/27/00, the battery leaked again creating extensive poisonous fumes and danger when the hood was opened to check why the vehicle refused to operate. Once again the vehicle was towed but the dealer and manufacturer refused to honor the warrnanty even though this second incident was directly related to the hazzard of 7/99. The battery and its components posed a dangerous hazzard to the occupants emiting poisonous gasses and should be reviewed or recall . I injested fumes from the vehicle when the hood was released to check the engine. On 8/30/99 vehicle was taken to the dealer for the second time because of water leaks. Dealer attempted to fixed vehicle but the leaks continues to satuate the vehicle whenever it rains. On 9/30/00 the alternator had to be replace because thebattery and its components short circuit the alternator and burned it out . I believe that this vehicle failed to meet the safety standards, requires and should be recall.
Consumer states while driving, electrical system failed and vehicle ceased as battery ran down, replaced alternator and ignition coil and wire.

We bought this van as a conversion van. We have been very unhappy with the perofrmance of the van. We have had the airconditing repaired twice. The battery failed many times. One time the alternator was replaced. There has always been a clonking noise when braking that the dealer can identify. The tires wore out just after they were a year old. The van has also been taken to the dealer for numerous other repairs. ( dot number: ).
