5 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Astro

Failure Date: 08/14/2013

Vehicle lost all electrical power to every system that is controlled by the ignition being turned on. Driver was in the process of making a u-turn around a curbing island in the divided traffic road when all electrical was interrupted while the steering wheel was turned all the way to the left. Condition caused steering to become difficult, brake pedal went clear to the floor, air conditioning and radio and headlights all went off. Condition was repeatable with exception of brake pedal, each time steering was turned to the left. Inspection under vehicle found that main power cable is routed across front side of main frame motor mount member. There was a slight curve in the way the wire was routed and each time the steering was turned to the left, the inner tie rod end for the right wheel came in contact with the wire harness. After many miles, the protective cover and then the actual wire insulation was rubbed through. This caused a direct short to ground through the steering parts of all (switched while running) electrical components of the vehicle. Problem was corrected by taping the wire insulation, then taping the protective covering. I then had to fabricate a bracket to screw to the steel crumple member to hold the harness back from the steering linkage.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Astro

Failure Date: 06/30/2006

I own a 2001 chevy Astro van. Today I had to pay another $300 to have the window motor fixed. This is the third time on this vehicle! we have friends with the same problem, but can't afford to fix it. There seems to be a trend with Astro vans and window motors. Although mostly a convenience issue, I suppose one could make the argument that not being able to roll a window up and down might be a safety issue. (by the way, the window goes down, but not up!).

21 Electrical System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Astro

Failure Date: 04/17/2003

Factory installed pass lock security system. It malfunctioned, and it shuts down the fuel system. The car just quits where ever it is . I have spent lots of money and 2 weeks without my car as a result of the inability of repair people to diagnose the problem. To make matters worse after one week and finally finding out the problem, it is taking another week to get the parts in illinois. While this is not something that caused an injury in this case. It is my understanding that this could happen on the highway and cause a horrendous mess. I also asked the dealer if he could just disconnect it and was told no!!!.

I have a 1997 Astro, in the past 8 months the driver side window motor, windshield wiper motor and transmission have all been replaced. The transmission was replaced with 54,202 miles on it, which started giving us problems at about 53,000 miles. The dealership replaced both idler arms at 25,680 miles. Had seat belt chime fixed (recall), driver seat feels loose when stopping dealership claims to have tightened it, still feels loose. The van has always idled rough took it in 3 times for that and can't seem to fix that. Sliding door rattle they tried to fix that also still rattles. The gas pedal sticks when I take off or when I go in reverse which makes it impossible to take off smoothly. I had an Astro and a safari in the past and never had as many problems as I had with this one.
