1996 Chevrolet Astro. The vehicle began to smoke on August 11, 2005. The smoke was coming from the dashboard. The vehicle was being driven when this occurred. The consumer stated the switch or the plug for the rear air conditioner blower melted. Also, melted the first six inches of the wiring harness. The vehicle is still drivable. The consumer was able to pull the vehicle over and turn it off. He checked to make sure there were no flames. This problem has not yet been repaired.

While traveling, and applying brakes consumer's vehicle came very close to have the vehicle behind hit it from the rear. There were no brake lights. Consumer called the dealer, and they were not very concerned. Took vehicle to another dealer who replaced the wiring harness in the steering column that controlled the brake lights and panel lights. Also, called the manufacturer and found that there was no recall.

High stopped working on the fan, then the fan speeds knob didn't work at all, that was replaced, but the wiring must have gotten hot at one time because the wire connection was dark, a couple months later, the only fan direction that is working is defrost.

Earlier today I had my wife take in our 2003 Chevrolet Astro. The service light would not reset. This was the second time it came on and this time it would not reset by itself. While there I asked her to inquire about the sept. 2, 2003 recall of the Astro van for a front suspension defect. Recall number 03044. The dealership representative searched by using our VIN. The search came back with no recall. I researched the recall on the NHTSA and called the Chevrolet manufacturers 800 number for further assistance to find out if we would be included. I spoke with an operator by the name of angela. She did a quick search and told me that there was no recall also. I disclosed to her that I was looking at the recall at that moment on the NHTSA web sight. She then restated that there was no recall for my van but she could not guarantee that I would not be included in this recall. All I wanted to know was if my van was included in the recall. Chevrolet tracks their vehicles. They know what parts are on which vans. They even know who bought them and where they are. Now they will not disclose if my van is included in this recall. This is a great concern to my entire family because this is a van that my wife and children are in. Is there some sort of code, rule, or law that they are breaking about not disclosing this to there consumers? please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you, brett spindler 702-644-4671.
The fuel injector was leaking gasoline, and the gas ran through the electrical harness into the main computer. The dealer has been notified. Ts the speedometer had become inoperative. Scc.

With no one in the car, leftside door, the switch that controls the outside mirrors started on fire. Luckly I was near the car with a friend and saw the running lights on the car flashing and the door switch on fire. By pulling the battery cable off we stopped the fire. The drivers door and switch where burned. The car drove home. On the way to work the next day the car headlights came on and wouldn't go off, then the heat motor started going on and off. I left the car with norwood motors to check out under warranty. My days may be off a day or two, but after a few weeks the service department could not find the problem and just replaced the main wire harness. Because it was a fire the dealership told me it was not covered under warranty, and I had to use my car fire insurance. I am still blowing fuses 20 amp fuses to this day, I am very experience in the field we are talking, I personally I beleive the door locks which are the 20 amp fuse, is back feeding to the low amperage switch and feeding back and burning wires in the harness. I've saved the orginal harness. This problem can be solved with diodes that only allow the current to flow one way. Children in a car with no keys can cause this a condition. This is not a fire accident, it's a wiring design that needs updating. I couldn't get anywhere with Chevrolet, or the chevy dealership, because it's a car insurance problem know. So I am working my way insurance departments, and not the Chevrolet, which puts me in the middle with no support. I hope you can help. Thanks for your time james reyolds.

Vehicle was parked infront of garage, and consumer left vehicle with driver's side window left down. Next day, found instrument panel/plastic were melted, and there was a fire residue.
The problems wiht the electrical system and the front power train appear to be corrected. However, I still smell the scent of burning circuits. I am still struggling to get the rear power train taken care of.

Ant-lock brake system had to replaced. Also, since purchase in may 2000, following components had to be replaced or repaired: lights on dashboard coming off and on/passenger side seatbelt tightened and won't release/driver's seat had loose bolts and moved/driver and passenger doors rattled/ mouldings inside fell off/passenger's window stuck/tv came on and off on its own while driving, replaced twice/interior lights stopped working when in park/ engine idled/ lights inside flickered/ fuel sender inoperative/ wires in ceiling rattling, air conditioner in rear not working/ replaced heater that did not work in rear, and passenger's airbag cover not flushing, and consumer worried it may deploy at any time.
The routing of the wiring harness installed at the factory was placed against the heatsink on the rear of the radio assembly causing the insulation to burn to cause a total loss of this vehicle. Contact john a. Reutter at superior investigations 727-848-3923 for further information and pictures.
The module and harness melted. Probably would have started a fire had not we been there and disconnected the battery. The vehicle was off and had been for at least 20 minutes. Just thought someone should check to be sure this is an isolated incident.
Without any warning the instrument gauges on the dashboard stopped working for a couple of seconds. Currently, they don't work for 5 days straight. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified.
Vehicle was sitting in front of consumer's house when another consumer noticed smoke coming from vehicle. The fire started within electrical interior system.
