Ppotentially dangerous defect in the 2003 Chevrolet Astro van. The steering knuckle/arm is designed in a way that causes it to come into contact with a wiring harness when the vehicle is turned sharply to the left. Over a period of time, this constant contact damages the wiring harness and allows the steering knuckle/arm to touch the wires inside the wiring harness. The wiring harness is connected directly to the battery so the end result is damage to other wires also sheathed in that wiring harness. Two weeks ago, while pulling out of a grocery store parking space, everything died. The engine would not re-start and nothing electrical worked, from the door locks to the radio. Everything was dead. We could smell burning wires and tried to get out of the vehicle. Because the doors were locked we could not get them open. We had to manually push up our door locks; each of us pushing up the lock of our own door, so that we could get out of the vehicle. Since then when the problem occurred, additional issue was that the abs light and brake light would come on and the brake pedal would sink to the floor. We came close to rear-ending someone several times. On April 23, 2011, we showed the damaged wiring harness to the mechanic at the Chevrolet dealership. Within two hours, we received a call to let us know the electronic control module (ecm) and the anti-lock brake (abs) module had been damaged. Both had to be replaced at a cost of over $2,100. We contacted general motors customer service this morning. Their response was that they considered this issue to be caused by “normal wear, based upon the age of the vehicle. € we disagree with their findings. Concern is that this defect can cause damage to important safety items, such as the brakes and door locks. The area of the wiring harness that is coming into contact with the steering knuckle/arm should either be moved or better protected. We don't want other drivers injured.

I attempted to make a left hand turn across two lanes of on coming traffic (speed limit 55 mph). I push down on the accelerator, the van moved into the on coming traffic lanes and the engine died. Cars had to quickly apply breaks to avoid hitting my van. It took about 20 seconds to get the van started and out of the intersection. The van was towed into courtesy Chevrolet and the distributor cap and rotator were replace. I was told everything was corrected. This was not the case as the same problem happened two additional times (October 24, 2004 and December 16, 2004) with the same terrifying consequences with on coming traffic. I was fortunate not to be killed or kill someone else with this vehicle stalling in on coming traffic.

Vehicle bought at the end of 2000, used. Every summer since I have had to have wiring replaced in the engine, front door locks stopped working after 5 months, front brakes have been replaced three times, I have had to have it towed 6 times do to the wiring and I have had to replace the alternator and battery due to all of the electrical and alternator problems. I also had to replace the starter. Hydraulics on rear door also broken. Display lights come on and off when they want to and I have continually replaced fuses. I thought at first that these were just flukes, but they are continually getting worse. I did talk to the previous owners son about six months after purchasing the van and he informed me that his mother returned it because things kept falling apart on it. I wish I had been informed before hand how much trouble it was going to be. I love chevorlet vehicles and I still like my van it's just costing me too much in repairs. I have also had to replace the driver window motor and the mechanic told me that it had already been replaced before. The passenger side window is now stalling and the gas gauge hasn't worked in year. I have to keep up with my mileage to make sure I don't run out gas. I am giving the date of the last incident when it was towed.

The battery leaked all over the main computer system and the engine wiring harness, the consumer wants reimbursement of repair cost because it was the fault of the engineers to have placed the computer directly under the battery.

Electrical wiring problems. Consumer was driving the vehicle when it completely died, and he had no steering or brake power. It almost caused a car accident. Dealer was contacted, and stated that this was an electrical problem ,that they had to change a fuse, but the problem still persists. Was not contacted.
