38 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 02/08/2013

I had an accident on the hwy in georgia, the steering was hard to control/lock, the tire sled, was rust and corrode on structure, brake area, wheel area, frame, tire broke off, almost flipped and was hit from the back, and twice in the front after slamming into a cement divider and the air bags didn't deploy at all, I injured my left side, neck, back, and hip. Blessed that my pregnant daughter in her 8th month wasn't in the truck with me. I had done multiple repairs on the fuel tank, tire rod, knock sensor, abs brakes, running board, brakes, rotors, etc, and was told that the rust on the frame won't effect the trucks performance and it was safe to drive because everything is attached to the frame good. I almost lost my life and two of us got injured. If these trucks are having and been having these issues- why do they just pull all of them and give people other options.

39 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

The first time this happened I was going home from work on the freeway. I was going 65 mph and my engine died I had no power steering and the brake pedal was very hard to push. I was able to put my truck in neutral and restart it. The second time the engine died I was sitting at a red light and it shut off. The third time it happened I was going home from work, just got off the freeway and stopped at the red light. When the light turned green I made a left and was going to the next light to make a right and the engine died. I tried to put the brakes on, but they were very tight and I had no power steering. I had to fight to turn the wheel and just made the turn without hitting the other traffic.

44 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/01/2012

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 2500. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds, the abs engaged without warning. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 150,000.

45 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/27/2012

Attempted to stop at a stop sign. The brakes were working until I had slowed to about 5 mph. Then the brake pedal went to the floor. The car in front of me had already started moving forward so no accident occurred.

46 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/14/2012

Truck in reverse my foot on the brake pedal, on a driveway with an incline , I was waiting to back out of the drive way onto the street when the brake pedal went to the floor , and the truck started to roll backwards into the street. With some luck , I remembered to apply the emergency brake and stop the truck. After being towed to a repair shop I was shown that the break lines were all rusted very bad , and that 1 of them had blown out with no warning and all fluid was lost. I felt lucky to be alive. My truck looks new from the out side and in , I keep it clean and have it inspected for the state of PA yearly. When I looked under the truck at the repair shop I was shocked that everything was covered in rust , it looked like a 50 year old truck. I owned a 1978 gm truck for 16 years - 250,000 miles and it was not rusted under the body like this.

47 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

Pulling out of parking lot and when merging into traffic I pressed on the brake pedal and it went completely to the floor without any braking action. The pedal came back up to normal position and I pressed it again harder the second time while simultaneously shifting into first gear. The pedal went to the floor again but locked up the wheels and the vehicle gradually came to a stop.

48 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/03/2011

Recently my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche has begun to shut off while driving which causes the vehicle to lose power. Another important safety issue, the brakes began to press all the way to the floor while braking. On August 3, 2011 while my son was driving the vehicle approaching a stop light, he pressed the brakes which went to the floor and rear ended vehicle in front that was making a turn. The front bumper is now damaged ( t-boned) and the air bags did not deploy. I'm not very pleased that I never received any notices about the braking system. I can't afford to make monthly payments and still have to pay costly maintenance fees. I can not afford to jeopardize my life and my family, especially my granddaughter. Something has to be done about these safety issues: braking, cutting off while driving and no deployed air bags.

49 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/03/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed the brakes engaged, unexpectedly, and she began to hear a loud humming noise. An authorized dealer was notified and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 155,000.

50 Service Brakes problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/06/2011

2002 chevy Avalanche - problems with abs breaks, truck won't stop as described in NHTSA action # pe05020, called the local dealer where I purchased new in 2002. I was told the recall is VIN # specific, however the NHTSA action desribes the recall as state specific( I reside in aurora, ohio-southeastern snow belt of lake erie). The vechicle had brake work done 2 yrs after purchase and the service and repair form stated " rear brakes corroded causing premature failure ". My complaint is why won't chevy or the dealer honor this recall when it states state specific in the recall. Last night during a short trip, under 20 miles, the brakes started smoking with severe pedal pulsation. The vechicle has 70,680 miles as of today-5/07/11.

The current mileage was 105,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

54 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 10/17/2010

According to my local gm dealer's service manager my problem with my Chevrolet Avalanche break lines rusting through and causing break failure is due to the fact that gm built these vehicles with a material that is not resistant to corrosion. Hundreds of complaints can be found on the internet regarding this problem, but thus far no recall has been made. For a few extra dollars vehicle manufacturers should be required to make this (break lines) from a rust resistant material. Gm will probably do everything it can to avoid recalls but believe me it's not an isolated problem. . . It's accidents waiting to happen!.

55 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Brakes lines broke while in traffic at stop light. Manage to drive in low gear 1/2 block to repair shop. They replaced the lines.

56 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/14/2010

Own a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche 5. 3l flex fuel v8 4x4. Recently when starting it, it turned over longer than normal, and then started with rpm gauge still at 0 rpm's. Then put in reverse, and it said stabilitrack is off and needs servicing soon. Truck started moving backwards, and then seemed as if the brakes were applied, wheels simply would not move backwards. Tried to movie it back and forth several times. Thought brakes were applied or transfer case or axle or differential had issues. Then started it again 3 minutes later and everything worked fine and back to normal, except check engine light was on. An hour later, started it again and this time everything was back to normal. Called dealer and they stated they had seen this before, but it most likely won't be under warranty. Odd seeing as how a large number of other people with tahoes/suburbans/avalanches, and other vehicles expressed the same issue online and on forums. . .

The abs kick in while turning at low speed.

58 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/21/2010

I am currently having a problem with my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche as to unwarranted abs activation. The vehicle is unable to stop a low speeds or hesitates at 5 mph coming to a stop. I began to have this problem about a week ago, on or about April 14th, 2010. I conducted a search of your web site and saw that there has been previous complaints from 2005. I contacted Chevrolet at the number provided in your recall bulletin # 05v-379. When I spoke to a customer service representative they told me my VIN # did not qualify for the recall. Chevrolet will not honor any repair to this vehicle which I believe clearly falls within the make/model/year. I plan to have the repairs made, and file suit against Chevrolet for the cost of those repairs.

When he tried to engage the brakes the vehicle did not stop in time, as a result he rear ended another vehicle. A police report was filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the abs module was defective and needed to be replaced. He took the vehicle to a dealer who confirmed the failure. When coming to a stop on clean dry pavement, the anti-lock brakes begin pulsating, tripling your stopping distance.

63 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 10/09/2009

Abs brake system malfunctioning --- when slowing down to stop, at about 5mph, brake pedal becomes soft and vehicle pulls to the right. Recall TSB#02-05-25-006b does not include this vehicle but this is the same problem. Local gm service dept refuses to repair this unsafe design defect.

64 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 10/06/2009

Unwanted abs activation on my 2004 Avalanche which started at 40,000 miles. The problem is constant and could be dangerous. There is currently a recall on the 1998- 2002 for the same problem but not on 03-04 etc. . I know of an 03 with the same problems and he hit a pole. I contacted gm and a pat o'brien dealership in medina ohio and they will not repair this problem unless I pay for. It effects trucks only in the snow belt areas, I live in ohio. I hope you can help me with this.

65 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

Antilock brakes are engaging during stops on dry roads. Causing vehicle to pull to the right.

66 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/29/2009

Same problem as found in NHTSA id # 05v37900 in 2002 chevy Avalanche is occurring in my 2003 chevy Avalanche. The abs is activated when reaching a speed of 5 mph or less. This is causing my Avalanche to not stop immediately at stop signs or red lights. My Avalanche will travel approximately 2 to 3 feet closer to the car or intersection I am stopping at. If I roll through the stop sign or not go below 5 mph while turning, the abs do not come on.

67 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/20/2009

Abs brake went out about 8 years ago being told by some mechanics no point in repairing it same thing will happen again seems that is a problem with this vechile when it went out I had 50 000 miles and the 36000 mile and 3 year warranity has already passed I heard a few weeks ago that you all had a recall but I was never notified the vechile had been parked at a mall when I started to leave their the light and warning alarm came on.

68 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

2002 Chevrolet k1500 Avalanche 4wd activates antilock brakes while completing a stop at low speeds (less than 5mph). This malfunction occurs every time the vehicle is driven, often every time the vehicle comes to a complete stop. The activation of the abs system has the undesired effect of greatly lengthening the stopping distance in an uncontrolled manner. In effect, the vehicle is not under control when approaching a stopped vehicle in traffic, intersection, pedestrian, parking, etc. This is a very hazardous malfunction of the abs system. This particular truck was recalled and repair was attempted by a Chevrolet dealership a few years ago. This previous dealership repair of the uncontrolled abs braking was not sufficient as the abs malfunction has returned on this vehicle. On 4/1/09 the Chevrolet dealership has refused to repair my current abs malfunction condition, stating that "gm will only do the repair once". The dealership repair did not work on my 2002 Avalanche, and now I am "stuck" with a vehicle that is a safety hazard on the roads due to uncontrolled releasing of brake pressure at low speeds. Please give me direction of what action I can take. Thank you.

69 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 02/12/2009

Anti-lock brake system stays on and took to a repair shop. They advised us that there was a recall on it. Then we took it to the Chevrolet dealership and they told us there was no recall. Did some research on the internet and found that there was indeed a recall. Chevrolet dealership not cooperating.

70 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/20/2008

I am unable to drive my 2004 chevy Avalanche due to the hydraulic brake system going out which makes the power steering go out as well. Prior to the system going completely out it occasionally it would be hard to turn the steeri ng wheel upon starting up the vehicle I contacted the recall department in referenced to this but they stated that even though my vehicle is the year and model fitting the recall my VIN does not fall in the batch. Why is this when I am having the problem which almost caused me to have an accident due to the brakes going out. Can this be rectified. I had the problem repaired but it started again.
