: the contact stated shortly after the vehicle was parked, flames were noticed dropping to the ground under the front end of the vehicle. Grey smoke was also observed coming from under the hood. The vehicle burned completely, and was considered a total loss. There was a police report and a fire department report processed at the scene. The heat from the fire melted the rear end of another vehicle parked in front of it, and did moderate damage to a third vehicle parked alongside the second vehicle. Updated 12/01/06.

My wife, myself, and my 6 week old baby girl were driving back to colorado from iowa where we had spent christmas with our family. The new 99 chevy Blazer trailblazer edition that was just one week old to us started acting funny. We we're pulling off on an exit to change the baby and feed her when I noticed my tachometer was jumping up to 4 and 5 k rpm. So I look in my mirrors and notice this white cloud of smoke behind us. No warning lights were on, my temp gauge was reading normal, we had no warning of what was to come. I immediately stopped the vehicle on the side of the road to see if I had blown the tranny or something like that. When I did that, then my check engine light came on and my battery light. I got out of the vehicle only to smell electrical smoke. I got my wife and 6 week old baby out of the vehicle and by the time I looked back the one week old Blazer that we had just purchased was in flames!!! when all was said and done the entire engine was a smoldering pile of steel, the dash and steering wheel had melted away, the front seats were 3/4 gone and all of our christmas gifts, baby cloths, toys, luggage, ect, were all severely smoke, fire and water damaged. The vehicle is totaled along with all of our belongings and I had no warning what so ever.

I have a 97 Blazer 4x4 with a little over 113k miles. I've been having
problems with the voltage (I think) for a while now. The voltage meter swings from just above 9v to over 14v when I stop at a traffic light. I'm convinced the gauge is not to blame because when I put a load on it, it indicates 9v to 10. 5v, the dash lights dim, the headlights wil also dim. I've already replaced (3) altenators and the battery twice which in 4 months and everything is still the same. The gauge will read just above 14v when I'm am driving the truck with no problem but the minute I stop at a traffic light the voltage gauge drops down to 9v or 10. 5v depending on what accessories am runnning on my truck. Temperature and frequency between trips seems to not
make a difference either. The only thing I have done to the truck
even remotely connected to the electrical system is to swap the radio, but I used a wire harness to connect the wiring. I've checked and will recheck tonight for loose wires or bad grounds, but other than that I'm lost. Any help?.

1997 Chevrolet Blazer, when passing a semi on interstate, vehicle acted like it was missing, after passing, looked in mirror, saw smoke, pulled over, popped hood engine on fire unable to put out with extinguisher. . . Fire engulfed vehicle, completely totaling it.
Consumer stated after turning the vehicle off it caught on fire. Dealer notified. The fire had taken place near the front of the vehicle.
At start up, consumer saw smoke on right side of hood, then flames. Dealer determined it was an electrical problem.
I am seriously concerned about enguine fires on these vehicles. We also lost a 1995 Blazer to a fire approximately 6 months ago. I have learned of many similar losses to others through informal contact with car owners, mostly by mentioning this in conversation and finding out that there was a friend or relative with a similar problem. This should be investigated. I am extremely thankful that during both fires my 3 and 5 year olds were not in the car and strapped into their car seats. The smoke was horrible and filled the car quickly. This could have been disasterous.
Electrical system malfunctioned. Vehicle has become undriveable. Three wire harnesses have melted. Consumer states the melting may have continued over a period of time working through fusible links, this caused problems with the ses sensor, gas gauge, and power steering. Fuel pump and module were also replaced.
While parked a fire started on right side of vehicle. Local fire department arrived to extinguish fire. They believed that fire was caused by an electrical short. Feel free to provide any further information.
4/8 I was driving the car and it just died out as if it was out of gas. There was still power to the radio/lights ect. The engine would crank but not kick over. The engine would not rev upon pressing the accelerator. It was taken to dlr chevy73 by gm roadside assistance. On 4/9, around 2:30pm I spoke w/ carolyn tirelli-service advisor, who at first said there was not word of the repair. Then stated she saw the tec pulling the vehicle out of the service bay. She advised it appeared he was wrapping up the repair job. At 4pm service advisor steve lambrose called and advised the tec took the car out for a test drive. Said tec saw a spark, smoke then car was engulfed in flames. Tried to state tec had done no repair. Contrary to what carolyn tirelli advised earlier. Advised fire dept was called c. Jay houck fire marshall camden county 856-374-6176. Steve lambrose/svc advisor advised me to also call my insurance CO. Geico/barbara malanga-claims adjstr/fire 800-645-7550 x5647. Dealer claims to not know what problem was at all. No findings. Car smells like electrical fire. But original symptoms/failure seem more like fuel line problem. No prior failures or warnings. No warning lights, stall outs or any indication anything was wrong with the vehicle. I or any passengers could have been killed or seriously injured the way this occurred. Car front end broken off, hood buckled from fire or firemen. /car a little over 1yr old. Still warranteed. Please help/advise.

While parked vehicle caught on fire under hood due to an electrical short. Vehicle was totalled. Dealer has been notified.
Engine check light problem is an ongoing issue with both current and former owner. 3 different mechanics put ther scanners on the vehicle and keep bringing up the oxygen sensor as the problem. Had one bad sensor at the wiring harness plug which was poorly assembled at the factor causing water to get to the contacts and contaminated the connector. Replaced all 4 O2 sensors and still cannot get the check engine light to go away. Vehicle performs perfect along with 24 mpg gas one highway driving. This is an issues other Blazer owners are experiencing. Gm should be held accountable to fix this issue.
While driving at 50 mph heard a muffled pop looked out driver side view mirror to see flames shooting out left rear of car. Turned around to see entire rear of car engulfed in flames. Pulled over, flames at rear tire, got family out and in 5 minutes entire car was totally engulfed in flames. Have contacted gm who refused to give me any idea of what a problem cause was. Help.
While driving in 2-wheel drive vehicle will jumps into 4-wheel intermittently. Dealership has examined vehicle, and replaced wiring harness for the first incident, and then replaced transfer case shift modular. Vehicle has not been examined for third incident. Please provide any additional information / attachments.
