1998 chevy Blazer. Windshield wiper failure. The wipers only work when they feel like it. They often don't work when it's raining, or just stop by themselves. This is a very dangerous situation and should be recalled like the previous years have been.

As I was driving my 1998 Blazer my windshield wipers stopped working in the middle of a thunderstorm in upstate new york. I had no previous problems with them. Before they stopped working I had them on a continuous setting and they were not working properly. They acted as if they were set on intermittent. Luckily there were no other cars around me and I could safely pullover and wait out the storm. I took the car into the dealer and was told that older models were recalled for this exact same problem but mine was not.
Daily, flasher unit continues to click with turn signals off. Under normal driving conditions, wipers fail to turn off on their own. Under wet driving conditions, windshield wipers fail completely. Have to use the mist or washer fluid function to get wipers to woprk when raining. After searching found that 1995 models were recalled for this same issue with the wipers.
The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer. The contact stated that the windshield wipers worked intermittently. The dealer stated that the module needed to be replaced. There was a recall for the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer, NHTSA campaign id number 03v159000 (visibility:windshield wiper/washer). The purchase date was unknown. The failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 117,000. Updated 01/02/08. *4200 the consumer stated has 2 Chevrolet Blazers with the same intermittent defect. Updated 12/12/07.

While driving in inclement weather, the windshield wipers came on and went off on their own. This was an intermittent problem. There were also many occasions were an accident could have occurred.
Windshield wipers stop working while driving. Dealer had not remedy other than instruicting us to "jiggle" a specific wire under the hood.
1998 Chevrolet Blazer. Windshield wipers stopped working without warning. This is a major problem for us since we live in one of the snowy states. Very dangerous when driving in a snow storm and they quit working.
1998 Chevrolet Blazer. Windshield wipers stop working without warning. The problem has been going on for about 10 months. Earlier and later Blazers have been recalled for this problem, but not the 1998 model year. I believe the recall should be extended to include 1998 models.
I've seen several recalls for windshield wiper failure/stoppage during rains, but not the the '98 Blazer. Mine works, but only when it's not raining. It fails regularly while in use. Any ideas ?.
The windshield wipers failed to work when needed.
Good morning, I am writing in regards to the issue outlined below. I have cut and pasted the email I received from general motors in regards to my inquiry about intermittent wipers on our 1996 s-10 Blazer. As I emailed back to general motors, our vehicle has over 70,000 miles (exclusion of special policy 02054); however, I a few concerns:
1) general motors replaced a defective part with another defective part. 2) general motors is using the age/mileage of a vehicle to avoid replacing a defective item that is a major safety issue - causing reduced visibility. I would appreciate your clarification on this issue. Thank you for your assistance!
best regards,
charles beck
email from general motors:
thank you for contacting the Chevrolet customer assistance center. We
appreciate your owning a 1996 Blazer and we apologize for your
dissatisfaction and frustration over the repairs that have been needed on the
windshield wipers. Your Blazer was included in the recall for the windshield wipers that
was issued in 1998. This repair was completed on your vehicle in
December of 1998. Now it appears that your Blazer may be included in special
policy #02054, which covers wiper failure due to a cracked circuit
board:
some customers of 1996-1997 Chevrolet Blazer, s10 pickup
vehicles not involved in recall 98043 may experience a windshield wiper
failure due to cracked solder joints on the controller circuit board. This special policy covers the condition described above for a period
of 7 years or 70,000 miles (112,000 km), whichever occurs first, from
the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of
ownership, or for those vehicles currently outside of this coverage, until
February 29, 2004. The repairs will be made at no charge to the
customer. We have created a computer file, 1-172249532, to notate your concerns.

Windshield wiper motor fails. Wipers work intermittently or not at all in the rain. My son's 1996 Blazer had the same problem and he received a recall. I called the Chevrolet customer assistance center and was told that they have not had any notification from ntmvs on 1998 Blazers yet. I think this recall should be extended to 1998 Blazers. This is very serious.
I recently bought a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer VIN # 1gndt13w9w2175446 and am currently experiencing problems with the front windshield wipers coming on on their own and when being used they will stay on for several minutes after they are shutoff. Sometimes they just stop working and "park" in the middle of the windshield obstructing the view of the road.
While driving at any speed windshield wipers work intermittently. Recall on 1994-1997 vehicles of the same make and model was issued. However, this vehicle was not included in recall due to VIN.
Windshield wipers work sometimes, then other times will not work. I've read on message boards that there was a recall for the wiper control board in the wiper motor for 1997 Blazers, but not for 1998.
1998 chevy Blazer - windshield wipers randomly stop working. Making driving in the rain practically impossible. After doing some research on the internet I understand that there is a recall for Blazers built between 1994 and 1996 that had the same exact wiper problem. However, the 1998 Blazer was never included in this recall. This problem has happened several times - sometimes it corrects itself within a few minutes other times it stops working for days at a time.
Consumer states that while driving the vehicle in the rain the windshield wipers would work intermittently. Dealer notified.
My windshield wipers on my 1996 chevy Blazer failed intermittently. Some days, they will not start up, other days they stop while I am driving and other days they work fine. I contacted gm but they told me that there was a recall, but my vehicle already had the replacement part installed. I felt that this is a major safety problem that could lead to accidents or fatalities.
The windshield wipers do not work properly. Sometimes they will just stop working for long periods of time, and other times will work properly. I researched this and found that 1995 through 1997 Blazers were recalled for the same problem, but the 1998 was not included (see nhsta campaign id# 98v150001, recall date July 1, 1998) this is a real hazard in heavy rain.
Wipers quit when raining or snowing /part that remedies problem is same part for recall 1995-1997 this is not covered. VIN shows 1998, but manufactured in 1997. Deaths will occur if this is not fixed. The problem is growing and I hope that no one dies to force a recall.
Windshield wipers sometimes dont work.
Consumer states that while driving and with no warning windshield wipers will work intermittently, and it will be hard for the consumer to see during rainy weather. Dealer notified.
Windshield wipers do not work or do not work properly when needed. Often when I turn on the windshield wipers they cycle part way through and then stop in the middle of the windshield, repeated attempts to turn the wipers on and off does not fix the problem. I understand previous model years with the same problem have already been recalled. The chevy parts guy told me all the windshield wiper modulers through the year 2000 were going bad and he routinly keeps 20 or more in stock because they all use the same part. Why have the other years not been recalled if it is the same part as the ones being recalled on older models and they are going bad as well?.
The windshield wipers have been intermittent for about six months. Yesterday, 7/1/2003, the wipers did not operate at all.
While driving the windshield wipers stopped mid sweep during a rain storm. This has occurred on several occasions. The dealer was notified twice. A recall was issued related to this failure but only for the 1997 Blazer's not the 1999 balzer's. * ph.
The general motors windshield wipers in my 1998 Blazer has the same problem as earlier models of gm trucks. They have had this problem from 1991 why can't they be made to fix it! I was lucky to get home alive in the rain storm yesterday. They just quit and I could see vary little.
Refer to nhsta campaign #98v150001 dated 7/1/1998. I am having problems with my windshield wipers not working properly. Intermittent switch does not work like it should, wipers continuously run when using mist function to clean windshield, sometimes wipers do not come on at all. Recall issued 5/1/2003 to include 1996-1997 Blazers. Mine is 1998 and is not included in recall per dealer even though I am having the same problem.
The windshield wipers fail or work at random. Extremely dangerous in rainy driving conditions.
Intermittentedly windshield wiper became inoperable obstructing the drivers view.
The consumers vehicle had the same as the NHTSA recall related to the windshield wiper. The dealer refused repair because the vehicle VIN was not included in the recall.
The vehicles windshield wipers would just stop while in operation. As a result the driver was unable to see while it was raining.
Intermittently while driving at any speed the windshield wipers would stop working.
Whenever windshield wipers are used they work whenever they want too. Sometimes they run continually. Sometimes they stop all together. I used to have a GMC sonoma that did the exact same thing and received a recall. This problem was fixed on the sonoma. This happens any time the wipers are used in the Blazer. I would like this fixed immediately at no cost to myself.
When driving the vehicle in the rain windshield wipers worked intermittently.
