I was driving on the highway, and my Cobalt suddenly lost power steering. I received flashing warning messages for power steering and another one saying "service air bag. " I am worried that if I am in an accident, the air bags will not deploy. These two things happened simultaneously.

While backing out of a parking space and shifting into drive, my 2007 Cobalt lost power steering. A chime sounded and the dash lit up with an error message about power steering failure. I've previously taken advantage of the recall for the assisted power steering rebuild in 2010, yet the component has failed again! gm wants me to pay for a tow to the dealership and pay for a diagnostic. I will pay for a tow, but I will not pay for them to tell me that the assisted power steering has again failed. If I take it to the dealership, and they find an error code indicating that the assisted power steering has failed, I believe they should not charge me at all. Furthermore, they should replace - not rebuild - this faulty, ill conceived device that has such poor design.
Car lost power steering while driving. I stopped, turned the car off, turned it back on, steering was back to normal. Later that day while driving, car lost power steering again.

While driving down a side street the power steering warning light came on and I lost all power steering control. At this time it became very difficult to steer and turn the wheel, I was able to get it back to my house, but moved extremely slow due to lack of control. I had the vehicle in the shop for other issues, not related to this and thought they might have said something about a recall, if there was one but they did not and their system is down to check that now.
I was driving my chevy Cobalt 2010 when I lost my power steering in August 2013. Although this was fixed during the 2010 recall, another faulty part was installed in my car and I lost my power steering while driving three years later. *** safety concern is that gm is not including all chevy Cobalts 2010 for the steering assist motor and steering column. **** they are including "some" models assuming that the cars they fixed in 2010 have safe parts. That is not true. There are numerous people that had had these parts fail after the 2010 recall. Please see other people who have also had this issue after the recall. . Read more...
At random times, my 2005 chevy Cobalt will pop up a "check engine" light and a "traction control" light, where I lose my power steering, the motor shifts hard into each gear, and the motor runs very rough. Also, there are clicking sounds at the shifter, like it is trying to shift into a gear or something. This is a serious hazard and as I've read online, I am not the only one this has happened to. There are thousands of others. This entire car needs to be recalled because no one knows what is doing this!.
I was driving home to visit my parents. Was getting ready to turn left at a busy intersection and lost power steering. When I got to my parents house researched power steering online and saw where it may be just a one time occurrence. When I started my car later on I noticed that my power steering was fine. I had no more problems while visiting family. That following Sunday I was on my way home and lost power steering again while driving at 10 pm on the interstate speed of 65 mph. My first car had no power steering so I've been able to cope but it's getting worse, in to turn around in my parking lot I have to turn my car of then back on in order to have enough power steering to make the tight turn. It's been a couple of months now I've tried to contact the only chevy dealership in my area with no response from them. I was finally able to drop it off the other day at the dealership I purchased the car from originally, I was informed this morning that my car was not covered under the recall for power steering and will cost me $500 to replace. Within the last couple weeks my car has also started making a thumping type noise as well. It sounds like my front passenger tire is about to fly off the axle. Not sure what is causing that - waiting to hear from the dealership on that. I feel like I'm riding in a deathtrap.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that while traveling approximately 20 mph, the power steering warning light illuminated as the vehicle lost power steering assistance. The vehicle was shut down then restarted and functioned normally. The contact stated that the failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v073000 (steering). The failure mileage was approximately 53,000.

I was driving into a roundabout and as I came out of the roundabout I lost the power steering and the steering wheel seemed to pull away from my hand. If I had been going any faster I would have been in a collision into oncoming traffic. This is the first time it happened. I drove home and got out my book to see if it needed power steering fluid and that is when I found out it was electric. In bought this car as a certified new car with about 30,000 mi. The car now has a bit over 75,000 miles. Today I drove to work and back and again I lost the power steering. This time I was expecting it to happen and it did. I checked on line and found that the power steering unit is and has been a problem in these cars and for many models and years. I would like it fixed before some one gets hurt or killed.

Driving down the road and all items on gauge cluster die and come back on over and over again. Security light pops on abs light comes on air bag light comes on. I lose power steering when this happens and sometime vehicle wont start and my security light pops on. Sometimes nothing in my gauge cluster wont work and all warning lights will appear when driving down the road or as soon as I start my vehicle.
When starting up the vehicle, the check engine and traction lights are lit up. The gauges fluctuate, as well as the temperture reading blinks. Loud clicking sounds can be heard coming from the shift selector. The steering wheel will not turn due to loss of power steering. After shutting off vehicle, the ignition will not release keys for about 15-20 seconds. Have also lost power steering on freeway at speeds of 70 mph. Have attempted to have gm and the dealership resolve the issue, first by having the recalled parts replaced. Problem is recurring for third time, after being "handled" by the dealership the last two times. A very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem.
While driving my 2006 chevy Cobalt when I lost power steering which made it difficult to control my car around sharp turns due to the fact that I was not expecting the power steering to just go out on me like that. This type of problem is very dangerous especially when it happens while driving. I have already had my power steering fixed once due to a past recall and here I am again having problems with the same thing again!.
My car was in the recall for power steering and I had the dealership replace the parts. I believe the recall was in 2010. Within the last year I had the power steering motor replaced because it was doing the same thing it was doing before the recall. I lose power steering and the car jerks intermittently. There is no warning and it happens at all speeds. I was told to pull off to the side of the road, turn the car off and it should fix itself. Unfortunately, the car started doing the same thing tonight. I am horrified that this is still happening and feel like the car is a death trap. I don't feel safe driving it and especially not with my children in the car. I plan on taking this issue up with Chevrolet again, in the hopes that they should pay for it. Please contact me for further information, I feel very strongly that this car should be recalled again for this issue.
This incident occurred at about 9:30pm on the night of 9/21/11. The failure of the air bags and steering occurred on NJ state route 78 west, about 50 feet before the ramp to route 31. There was no traffic congestion on the road, and visibility was good. I was fully awake, and was familiar with driving this route on a daily basis. While I was driving my 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt home from college, my vehicle lost power steering right before I got onto the ramp. Keep in mind that my vehicle was traveling completely straight at the time when the power steering light came on, and about half a second later my vehicle began spinning to the right. Before I could slow down or straighten the car, my vehicle had rotated almost a full 90 degrees to the right. At this point the ramp had started, and thus to avoid hitting the guard rail on the right side of the road I made a strong effort to turn the wheel to the left and straighten my car. I succeeded in turning the wheel to the left, and thus straightened my car out until my car then started to spin to the left, and bounced off of the guard rail on the left side of the ramp at approximately 40mph. A couple seconds elapsed from when the power steering light came on, to when my car hit the guard rail. After the car bounced off of the guard rail, it continued to spin for another 270 degrees, and came to rest on the narrow shoulder, parallel to the road. The air bag did not deploy, and after I shut the car off and turned it back on, the power steering warning light had disappeared entirely. Although I drove the car off of the ramp, as I was instructed to by police, the car was totaled due to significant damage to the front of the body and frame of the vehicle. After the incident I discovered the previous recall on the power steering motor, however when I checked with the dealer, their records indicated that the recall was fulfilled.
2006 chevy Cobalt- had original recall on electric steering done. Now 2 dealers can't figure out what is wring with the car, but suspect the steering module is out. Driving you lose power steering, just as before. Scan shows 19 codes all associated with the steering. My car and a friend with the same vehicle have expierenced this.
Not sure exactly when it happened, but it has been occurring for years now. I have spent thousands of dollars in diagnostics, parts, and labor trying to fix the mystery problem! I'm fed up! it seems to happen randomly and fix itself randomly. Sometimes it lasts a couple days and sometimes longer than a couple weeks. The problem: my car will lose power steering, it starts shifting really hard and the gauges inside get all screwed. Occasionally when it happens it just won't shift at all. It will stay in first gear. The inside gauges: the speedometer will bounce all over the place, never staying still. The radio will also get loud and quiet by itself. The power locks would frantically go up and down themselves, until I took out the spark plug for those. It is very difficult to drive when the power steering goes out, not like cars that were built without it in the first place. The very hard shifting cannot be good for the car and is dangerous when I am driving during winter months or rainy weather. I live in michigan and it snows a lot. Even the chevy dealership can't tell me what is wrong and I have paid to have numerous parts replaced that have not fixed the problem. I've read other boards online with people having the same issue. I just cannot afford to keep paying to not get the problem fixed. I hate driving such an unreliable car with two young children, four years and 10 months. It happened multiple times when my little one was a newborn. Felt like I was giving the poor baby whiplash when the car switched gears. It's an automatic so there is nothing I can do about it.
Car loses power steering randomly, dealer wont recognize recall. Will be turning and car will all of a sudden lose the power steering causeing my car to jerk and I need to correct.
I have had problems with traction control light coming on and when it does the car won't shift properly (automatic), jumps and stutters and dies. Also lose power steering. This has been happening off and on ever since I got the car 5+ years ago. I have had it back to the dealership I bought it at (Dodge dealer) at least twice who took it to a chevy dealer and have had it to local chevy dealers multiple times and no one can capture any codes or fix it. Now it thinks the key is in the ignition all the time and locks don't work properly even tho I had switch replaced on recall. Searched internet and see many others have had this same problem and some said it was abs issue. Why has there been no recall?.
I was turning onto webster st when I suddenly lost my power steering causing me to hit a curb. There was quite a bit of damage done to the right side of my vehicle causing it to be inoperable.
I was driving and suddenly lost power steering when attempting to make a right turn. Continued driving though very difficult to even change lanes. Once I reached my destination, had extreme difficulties in parking my vehicle. I turned off the vehicle, turned it on again and at that point power steering was restored. No where in the vehicle manual did it indicate I can turn off the car and restart should I suddenly lose power steering. I have already contacted Chevrolet and they informed me of the power steering recall of which I never received a recall notice as well as a recall for the fuel pump modular, again, never received a recall notice. I have scheduled an appointment for tomorrow to have my vehicle serviced at a Chevrolet dealer to have both items fixed.
Was driving and lost power steering.
I was driving down a dirt road traveling between 15 and 20 mph. I had made it safely up the road and down the road till I started to turn a corner. It was a blind corner and as I started to turn I noticed the steering was really tough to control. I had lost power steering, the change was so sudden and it caused the steering wheel to jerk that I lost control of the car and slide across the road and into a very deep ditch. The angle I impacted caused damage to my front driver side bumper, fender, driver side front and rear door panels and rear bumper. It also cracked my bumper in two places and broke part of the driver side splash guard loose. There looked to be damage to the driver side headlight as well. I have contacted the dealership where I bought the car and they have order a replacement motor for the car and referred me to the gm customer service to find out whether the other repairs that need to be done will be taken care of by gm. On a side note I received a letter from gm issuing the recall and stating that I will be sent a letter when parts become available.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated while driving at speeds of 65 mph there was an unusual noise and the power steering light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle would intermittently lose power steering. The dealer would not perform a diagnostic or further investigate the failure. He advised he was unable to make repairs and advised that he contact the NHTSA. The manufacturer had not been contacted. The failure and current mileages were 103,000. The VIN was not available.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving at approximately 35 mph, the vehicle lost power steering which made it extremely difficult to turn the steering wheel. The same failure occurred about 300 times. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealership at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 67,000.
2006 chevy Cobalt suddenly lost power steering and became extremely difficult to control, almost causing an accident on more than one occasion.
I was driving and I was turning on a curb. I lost my power steering. I was going 50 mph. I went to take the car to the dealer and turned the car and once I restarted my car the power steering was back as if nothing happened. I was told by 2 dealer that my car is not on a recall list. And, that I needed to get the power steer motor replaced most likely.
1) driving at a low speed 2) power steering message appeared on dashboard. Lost power steering completely. 3) restarted car.
Power steering failure on my 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. No prior problems, just happened suddenly. Occurs weekly. Receive "power steering" warning on dash display and lose all power steering.
I recently bought a 2006 chevy Cobalt LS. It had 83000 miles on it or close there to. Yesterday I was driving when all of a sudden to power steering word came across the screen. At that time my car lost all power steering. This is a serious problem with the vehicle. It is an electric power steering system and should be considered as a recall. I checked and there are hundreds of other complaints.
As my 18 year old daughter was driving home from school, her power steering light went on as the warning bells in her dash rang. At that point, she lost all power steering in her car. She said that it took all of her strength to make the remaining turns to get home.
2008 Chevrolet Cobalt - power steering problem. Power steering light goes on, car loses power steering. Comes and goes. Never know when it is going to happen.
My 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt has a power steering problem. The power steering randomly goes out while driving and the problem has become more frequent. It now occurs within minutes every time I drive the car. This car has an electronic power steering system. It is extremely dangerous to lose power steering while driving, making turns, parking, etc. I have read numerous complaints from other consumers regarding this issue and I really hope that gm issues a recall to fix this problem. It is very difficult to steer the car and at this point I am nervous to drive it at all. Thank you for taking this into consideration.
